Coop/Steve

That, and the whole last page of discussion on "clocked screws" just cracked me up....

Thanks for your patience on that..

I'm going to have to take a leave from the GJ. I believe it's ruining my life. What used to be a peaceful existence is quickly becoming a mind spinning obsession. I will be making an appointment with the local "shrink" to discuss this life consuming new obsession of screw clocking.:willy_nil

Thank you very little 1/2 cup and the rest of you.:lol_hitti

Now back to the show...................................

Oh, nice bench Steve, but, well, you know:sad:

Now, once we get started on the big stuff, like, well, I'll tell you later....... Well, then look out! Our OCD can get you in the smallest ways, until they become BIG WAYS. MUAH HUAH!!!!!!!!!

Apart from that the shrink wouldn't know what a clocked screw was anyway unless he or she was a GJ participant. :dunno:

At least now I know how to set you blokes off - just post a pic of unclocked screws. :willy_nil

PS> I just watched the first Shed Show episode, so I know who whiskers is now.

GB: i was curious how I CLOCKED MY SCREWS so grabbed my camera and here's what i've come up with so far. as you can see in my kitchen remodel i did horizontal and WTF i forgot to CLOCK ONE and on my bath remodel 5 years ago i CLOCKED them vertical. I thought i was HORIZONTAL on all of them. now i need to go through the rest of the house with my screwdriver instead of my camera, but you are not getting me to LABEL my switches (YET).

1/2: just an FYI for your rusting AWESOME table you might want to just rub on some BLO and with the rust in the mix it really does make a nice shiny cool color patina. or as is if you don't want any oil on your welding/work table.

thanks for CLOCKING YOUR SCREWS

DAN and ALL: just to let you know going to GJ for ideas on how to avoid doing a better job on ANYTHING is AKIN to going to your favorite tavern/pub or restaurant for drinking advice when the drinks are free.

Bob, the issue I have is reading glasses, I have to take them off to get the true perspective and annoys the heck out of me.:eyecrazy:
Its great to read that you at peace now..:lol_hitti

No high jack Lyndon at all, Bobs labels caught my eye as well.

I am sure Bob will deal with his clocking in his own time as we all do:lol_hitti

Bob, thank you for the info on the label makers, they look the goods.

What I have found is the replacement cassettes are expensive out here. I use a Dymo unit.

What sort of costs are your cassettes??
Steve, I no longer need reading glasses. I had a cataract fixed with a new lens when I was in my 50s. Restored the sight in my left eye but I still had double-vision. When my eye doctor found the cataract in my right eye a few years later, he suggested letting it progress to full blindness to "fix" the double vision. I countered with fixing the cataract in that eye but install an artificial "reading" lens. Whenever the double vision interfered with something I was doing I simply closed my right eye. Now I can close my left eye and read the very bottom line of the close-up eye test with ease. Not a good idea for most people but it's my lemonade solution to my lemon eye.

That Dymo label machine looks great. The Dymo label maker I used to have made me crazy. It had the wheel with letters in alphabetic order and every label I made had a mistake. On top of that the tape was so stiff and curled that it dismounted itself within a short time.
Dymo_zpsduaf8sev.jpg

The Brother P-Touch cassettes vary in price (metallic is more) but the one I use most is the Black on Clear and it runs about $9 here in the US.

I agree entirely with Grumblebum. GJ is the best place for "therapy" for all kinds of issues!

As for clocking screws, I've had to deal with it (and associated other issues) for 41 years of marital bliss with BB767. I understand, but at least you have a venue to vent/share.

We had an equally extensive discussion of clocking screws on the Restored 1930's Auto Shop thread several years ago (the thread will celebrate 7 years in December). But I've learned some things in the process. Slot screws on a vertical surface require vertical clocking (so dust doesn't collect in the slot - I'm the one cleaning them, so I notice these things). Orientation on horizontal surfaces for slot screws only requires they be clocked to the same position on a rectangular thingy (like a vent cover) or, on a circular thingy (like a round vent cover for ceiling fan), they should each be clocked to 90 degrees of the edge of the thingy (I could say "item, but what fun is that?!). Philips screws should be clocked to match each other - there's probably a whole area of science devoted to figuring out what that configuration would be, depending on the shape of the surface being secured.

Sorry to add to the OCD nature of the subject.

Lyndon, Sometimes you just have to push the envelope to discover just where that fine line is.;)

I sign out at around 7.30 – 8.00 pm and potter in the Shed Downunder for a bit then hit the sack early, I am usually up at 4.00 am and at work at around 6.00 am.

You don't need to leave dan, you'll get plenty of council here

GB

Hey GB, my advice to Dan is to log out for a bit, take some deep breaths, relax and take it easy in his Shed for a bit as it does have a calmative effect and the urge to clock screws does pass in time. ( refer to the image of Unclocked Screw Randomness above)

Drives, thank you for sharing and being so forthcoming about your foibles ( you may need to google that ) in regard to your Screws now that shows true strength of character..

Labelling switches, interesting topic. Every piece of fixed electrical equipment in the Shed Downunder has a discrete label adjacent to it with a number that reflects the circuit of origin from the main switchboard. It sure makes it easy to identify what is what when you are working on the electrics..

With the Retro Industrial Table as I am actually trying to encourage the rustic appearance, the BLO added to the mix should help as you say, I will give it a go…

The GJ is Ideas and Inspiration Central drives……….

Bob, Eye sight, until you have an issue with is something we tend to take it for granted, glad to hear that you found a solution and work around..
I have had reading glasses for 10 years or so now and i have never come to grips with them when it comes to getting things straight and level.:eyecrazy:

The old Dymo label tape was a pain, thank fully technology has caught up with things.

This will give you an idea of what we pay for tapes, they are expensive by comparison to yours.

Chris, thank you for chiming in here your input is value adding to the discussion..

Seriously, I do whole heartedly agree with the things that you have learned when it comes to Clocking Screws.

As an apprentice I would get a foot up the back side or a clip across the ears if we didn’t clock our screws on a job, no doubt there would be a white paper or a YouTube video(s) out there somewhere that is devoted to the subject but I am not going to go there….

Thank you one and all..

I am CLOCKING OUT OF HERE and getting back to work, have a great day and this has been a good start to mine…………..

Yep, I got the same treatment. And the slots MUST be clocked vertically... NOT horizontally... That way the dust wouldn't collect in the slot...

Clocking screws :dunno::eek: :wtf:.

Seriously :wtf:.

What is next! Wheel caps at car shows !

You're kidding, right? That's what jacks are for when you drive on good tires, clocking the hub caps when you park.:eyecrazy:

OCD keeps getting mentioned around here. Of course it is all in fun, and true OCD is a serious disorder.

Clocking screws apparently is real business in some industries. I was a natural closet clocker, not willing to admit my fetish.

What about food consumption. Do you religiously fold up your trash to the smallest possible size at every fast food restaurant?

What does you peanut butter look like?

1/2 - You guys are all messed up. You're eating lunch at 10:00PM???:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil

Drivesit - Not me buster, you didn't read my post, that is a real butter tub I posted! We started eating only butter a few years ago and won't go back. I've not seen a weight loss thread, but I'm having trouble maintaining weight the last several years. Love telling the ladies at Zumba I have to go get a milkshake on the way home. Since one of them rides with me, she knows I don't lie. They hate me for it :)

Did you ever noticed your handle is one "H" away from describing my transportation?:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

HOTFR8 - It's just not right until it is lifted and turned so us old fogeys can read it through our bifocals without tilting our head.:eyecrazy:

As I rolled over and over I kept visualizing you guys down there, upside down, and 1/2 eating his lunch upside down at 10:00 PM.

I had never actually seen the elusive and mysterious object of our affection.

HOTFR8: is that can full of VEGAMITES??

OIF: OMG it's good i wasn't in the middle of drinking some ice tea or ice water. I never thought of that small change in my name.

also i'm glad you like to live and still eat foods you like. here's a link for you and anybody else that wants to join me and others on the GET HEALTHY thread that used to be called Weight loss.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=298568

i had to change the name because it's true it's become more of a weight maintenance thread now that we've dropped a few pounds. i think holding a weight is a lot harder than losing a few pounds.

1/2: thanks for watching and hopefully smiling in silence while we carry on.

Ok I can relate to aligning centre caps. When I do my 5 wheel rotations and clean every 5000k on the Hilux, I do try to line up the top of the Toyota logo on the centre cap horizontally with the logo on the tyre/tire.

This is not a good pic and the truck is due for it's service/wash this weekend too I just remembered...maybe I'll try for a better pic if I get to give it a bath and tyre/tire shine the wheels.

HOTFR8, I do have to take my glasses off at time to get the true perspective..;)

I don't usually laugh out loud, but I was ROFLMFAO:lol_hitti

As I rolled over and over I kept visualizing you guys down there, upside down, and 1/2 eating his lunch upside down at 10:00 PM.

I had never actually seen the elusive and mysterious object of our affection.

Andy, :lol_hitti nope its perfectly normal

1/2: thanks for watching and hopefully smiling in silence while we carry on.

drives this has been a hard act to follow..;)

The day is only 1/2 done here and you guys are calling it quits.

I dreaded the day I would have to wear those things. But can you live with out them?

can_of_worms.jpg

This is Vegemite.
vegemite8-260x222.jpg

See how it all starts.

1/2Cup, Any news on that drone? We are all waiting to see your flying skills and video footage.

HOTFR8, done well.

GB.

Thanks GB, at least there is a growing number of sympathisers out there in GJ land..

All, what a great journey.

Changing topic for a bit and an update.

The Drone update, it has gone back to Europe to be repaired by the OEM as the damage from the prop failure and crash could not be facilitated in Aus.
We are expecting a temporary replacement early next week as there is a Feature Survey to be completed soon and the company is providing it as a good will gesture..

As for the images from the Drone I am still battling with our IT dept at the moment on that score..........Grrrr.

I really do need to prioritise stuff at work as we are under the pump from all quarters.

Meetings, lots of travel, tight dead lines and add hoc stuff fill my day like you wouldn't believe. So the day goes in the blink of an eye..

Other news at work, we have been setting up a Three axis plasma table at work, so I am looking forward to commissioning it with a few projects of my own...as you do so watch this space..;)

The weekend is nearly here and I really haven't given much thought to it at the moment.:headscrat

Again thank you one and all for your contributions to the discussion and great feed back. I am pretty humbled by it all..

I want to thank all of you guys. I haven't laughed so much in quite a while. I'm saying all because I don't think I can respond to each of these post. You guys are the best, thank you. And Drives, 2 out of 5 ain't bad.:lol_hitti

Still laughing as I'm moving on to other threads.

I guess I need to break out the Q-tips and thinner to get the minute overspray from my quickie tool box paint job. Not!

Back to our regular scheduled programming "Model A Restoration: to clock or not to clock?"

Its addictive.;)

On the Model A we do as Henry did...

On another note and stating the obvious the weekend is rapidly approaching..

Under the pump . Now that is not bad for a guy that works mostly with water.

Bad luck on the drone but then I guess we can wait as in future we will see some thing impressive.

I guess 1/2 is saying T.G.I.F.

HOTFR8, you are on the money there.

It has been a busy yet productive week at work and I am just so pleased to step off the Merry Go Round so to speak and it is past the yard arm now.

A snap shot of my week at work just to paint the picture:

. Electrical Minor Works contract tender technical scope preparation, bear in mind this contract is worth AU$1.8m over three years.
. Meeting with our Procurement team to sort out tender requirements.
. Mandatory Hazard and Risk Assessment training refresher.
. Mandatory OH&S/Environmental refresher training.
. eTendering Portal training.
. A site visit to sort some control issues on a new pump station.
. Operator training on the above.
. Supply Authority Application for power supply for a new water regulation site.
. Detailed electrical design review for a new pump station.
. Contract payments.
. Review Factory Acceptance testing documentation for two pump station switchboards in preparation for a trip to Melbourne on Monday to complete the inspection and sign off on as built.
. Software acceptance testing for the above.
. Summarise contractual defects and non compliance issues for both the mechanical and electrical aspects of a new pump station at Swan Hill we did last week.
. Attempt to complete a memorandum for the roll out of a Lithium Ion Battery trail in place of our AGM s we are currently using for 100 of our solar powered sites, not much progress on this front I am afraid.
. I just rocked home a there was a service call from another pump station so I promptly hand balled that to our on call guys.

Looking forward to some QTS

:beer::beer::beer:

Have a good one and thank you for dropping by,.........

1/2: if you combine what you do at work and at the SHEDS in a week you put most of us to shame. hard to believe you have time to sleep much less see and participate in family stuff.

WELL DONE and hope you have a great weekend.

I just picked up something i didn't know i needed, but my wife kinda likes it too so maybe i did ok. since you like old stuff too i thought maybe a WWII Liberty ship hatch might look ok on your thread. ok? it's 60x24x2 inches

any tips on restoring it are appreciated and i might start a thread on restoring old ship hatches and old growth wood.

cheers

Is it not Lithium Ion Battery? All sounds interesting. Again T.G.I.F.

HOTFR8, you are right there Lithium Ion.:lol_hitti

My blue...;)

To paint the picture, we have in excess of 10,000 solar powered automated regulating structures, remote monitoring, flow monitoring and remotely read sites within our water delivery network.
Each of these sites has an AGM battery pack with two 28 amp hour batteries in them at a cost of AU$425 each.
Based on our current data our mean time to fail is 3.75 years per pack.
Keeping in mind that the conditions they are run in are well outside the safe working envelope in regards to the operating temperatures.
The other limiting factor is the power management setup for each site where the solar capacity is not ideally suited to maintain the batteries suitably all year round.
Long story, the short version we have been trialling a small number of Lithium Ion battery packs from various vendors that have made some fairly big claims about their technology and whole of life costs.
Our system allows us to monitor every thing from the battery temperature, solar in, charge rates, battery voltage, site load, you name it and we capture that data.
The results are looking very promising thus far, so my mission is to articulate the results and rope in some capital funding to undertake a larger and more controlled trial using the Lithium Ion units.

Watch this space..;)

Hey hey its Saturday.:rocker:

drives, I get a good 8 hours sleep every night believe it or not except for this morning as Mrs 1/2 Cup was off early to get down to Melbourne to the annual agricultural show to help out with the last day of the Dog judging. That leaves me on Rodent duty here...;)

https://royalshow.com.au/

I have to say first up your hatch is just awesome and one fantastic score.

Thank you so much for sharing it here..

To be honest and if were mine I wouldn't touch it and leave it just the way it is.
That said you will get many varied views on what you should and shouldn't do to it..

What are your plans for the hatch??

Likewise have a good one...

All, another little side project at work has been setting up our new 3 axis Plasma Table .

It will cut up to 1 1/2 plate.

We get some training on its operation next month and I cant wait to test it out..:rocker:

I can foresee it doing more stuff that's not work related than anything..

Now you know why I love my work, the toys we get to play with is unreal..

Have a great day...

1/2: if that plasma cutter was in my garage i'd surely learn how to use it even though today i wouldn't have a clue. nice clean looking unit and what do you have to lift the 1.5 inch plate with? maybe a bridge crane or just a fork lift? yes flying drones, cutting thick steel and technology almost makes me wish i would have studied harder in school so i could have a job like yours.

i hadn't really planned on where i was going to put my new SHIP HATCH, but was thinking it might do well as a top for an old metal cabinet in my shed that i'm turning into a wood shop that is about 6 x 13 with a 2x5 foot spot added to that for a nice bench. i showed a picture of it to my bride and my plans are on hold and maybe a full on stop cause SHE LOVES IT and wants me to make a table with some cast iron legs under it for behind the sofa or against a wall. we'll see, but i have a good idea it won't be for something just for me now.

have fun with the rodents, but i know Shelby will be helping out a lot if you want to get in some QST.

cheers

drives, you just have to grab hold of the opportunity as they come along and believe me I wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed when I came to my education.:shocking:

I really like the prospect of you using the hatch as a table top with cast iron legs and looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Perhaps some thing like these.

or these

Or maybe something a little more industrial..:dunno:

Have a good one.

Time to walk Shelby.

Pick up some mower fuel.

Pick up the new back door for Andrews place that Mrs 1/2 Cup ( bless her ) ordered...

an into the garden this morning while the weather holds out...

drives, apologies that I didn't fully answer you question re the plasma table and how we intend to place the plate steel on it.

View media item 63922
The sliding doors on the left gives us access to the table, we have either a Manitou or a folk lift with the correct attachments to lift and place the sheets. Manual handling is a huge issue to us.

It is only occasionally that we would be doing any thing really heavy..

I trust this helps..
