also HotFr8 posted up his version of what you mean by BLACK DUCK so is that what you mean or do you have another image? specially since you have a pilots license and a fear of heights i'm just trying to get my facts straight here.

just curious since you are a past race car driver do you ever get on a long stretch of road and burn a little extra gas and put the pedal to the metal so to speak? or are we both too old for that at our age? i drive 10+ year old Hondas now, but not a lot of guys passing me on the freeways yet unless they are going 10 mph over the speed limit and looking for an expensive ticket. does Andrew and others let you drive their cars at the track and that pretty much fills your cup with the need for speed?

Now that we are nearly there Andrew is getting pretty anxious and fussing around the engine like you would not believe. I have to admit that I will breath a sigh of relief when we get it back in the car and its doing what it is meant to do ( not that I would let Andrew know )

To give you the Aussie translation:

Black Duck = person of questionable character.
Freckled Duck = protected species.

To be honest I have been guilty putting the foot down on the open road in my Mini but those days are long gone. I stick to the speed limit now as it is 1 careless and 2 expensive if you get caught, not to mention the loss of demerit points. The reis a time and a place to go fast and that's on the race track.

I haven't driven his car on the track. Andrew lives in a rural estate that is nice and quiet and I have had the opportunity break the peace on the sealed road out front once in a while.

also just an FYI. since my wife wants me to make her a picnic table out of the ship hatch so i couldn't use it for a work bench i actually found 2 more so maybe my work bench will have a little character and vintage look to it. here's the latest find. i already removed the legs.

With the engine you just have to do things right, then check and double check again. I spent quite a bit of time on the weekend just doing that.

Yep, back to work. The sad thing about it is a cracker of a day here and I am in the office..

I love that hatch, it just oozes character and to top that off you go and find more. I am really envious..

Speaking of driving an unregistered car on the road. This was Andrew and Cameron going for a spin around the block at his place last week. There are still grip marks in the passengers seat

I was able to fit the dial indicators fairly easily using the existing mounting holes that Rover kindly provided on the block and head rather than make up brackets suggested on some forums to do the same job . Thank you Rover.

The TDC indicator is mounted to an M6 rocker cover threaded hole, I made an M6 male to M8 female adaptor by welding an M6 stainless bolt to an M8 stainless nut that fitted the indicator bracket, its nice and solid.

The cam shaft indicator bracket is screwed into an M8 mounting point on either side of the head and similarly it works well too.

Engine build is coming along nicely 1/2, and looking very nice!

Looking forward to seeing more pics of engine bling!

Andy, thank you...

Using the dial indicator to determine TDC when you take the dwell into consideration is far more accurate then the factory markings which I found were about three degrees out, that said the engine would run ok at that.

Similarly using the dial indicators in finding the full lift of the cam shafts has been a great help.
The cam shaft pulleys also have fine vernier adjustment to allow for the fine tuning on the dyno.

Andy, Its Saturday morning here now and the four day weekend is officially here.

Now the To Do List**


The Rover K Series.:

1. Finish the cam timing.
2. I borrowed a Snap On Bore Scope from work just to check the piston the valve clearances as a sanity check.
3. Finish fitting all the ancillary bits.
4. Finish all the QA documentation.

The West Wing:

. Interviews with prospective Property Managers on Monday.
. Waiting on a quote to install Ducted Evaporative Airconditioning. The home has only one split AC at the moment which will stay as well.
. Mrs 1/2 Cup has organised to have the front and rear verandas finished in a textured spray coating as the original painted finish looks a bit crusty. This should improve things a lot.


Other happenings:

. We have been playing ( training really ) with the Plasma Table at work and one of our Graduate Engineers has done some fantastic work in regards to a few templates for some shed art that I had in mind, anyway watch this space as I have quite a bit of Aluminium and Stainless plate that will be used for the greater good of the Shed Downunder as a training exercise.

. A friend of a work colleague is a bit of a collector and it was mentioned in conversation that he had some Traffic Lights for sale and not one to let a chance go by I have put my name on one that will be delivered next week.
What's a Shed with out some Shed Art.

The not negotiables:

. Mow lawns.
. Water lawns.
. Fertilize and mulch around our Orange tree.
. Clean and vacuum the Shed.
. Fabricate a bracket to fit the new LED TV in the family room. That's the one Mrs 1/2 Cup brought a couple of weeks ago for the kids staying in the West Wing.
. Repair my new garden hose that one of the Rodents chewed the end fitting off. All the while Mrs 1/2 Cup filmed it and posted it on FB, not happy but I could see the funny side of it.
. Do nothing.
. Assemble the garden cart that Mrs 1/2 Cup thought was a good idea to buy. Whats more where are we going to store it.
. Smell the roses.
. Walk Shelby.
. Amy is due with Grandson #3 this weekend so we are just waiting, waiting and waiting for the phone to ring.

drives, we have sifted through quite a few Property Managers and come up with a short list for interview next week, just with the phone contact that Mrs 1/2 Cup had with one and based recommendations around the traps I think the decision will be relatively painless. Step One of the journey..

The To Do List hasn't progressed that far this week end we have had quite a few visitors and you just go with the flow, the list will be there tomorrow any way..

I have managed to tick a few things off in any case plus some honey dos

Lawns - 1/2 done.
Replace an out door tap in the West Wing.
Fit two more curtain rods.
Line some drawers for Mrs 1/2 Cup.
Repaired the garden hose that the Rodents chewed.

Andrew, things are ticking along just fine, Mrs 1/2 Cup is down in Melbourne today so its Quality Shed Time

I will spend a little time cleaning in the shed as you do then get stuck into the Rover K Series. The DOHC cam timing is a job that once I start on I don't like being interrupted, that's when you make mistakes an miss things.

I finished off Andrews picture frames over a coldy last night, I just hate having things hanging around like that, it must be my OCD again. He can't complain about the service around here.
I have a sneaking suspicion that Mrs 1/2 Cup was behind that in the first place.

Two places I intended to go to today both shut making a 4 day long weekend on it. So those jobs will have to wait for Wednesday. Always happens so I am well aware. On Cup day we have no mail delivery so no news paper delivery meaning I can not sleep in and have to collect the news paper before 9 am. Now a sleep in would have been good.

Cup Day is always a great day for some QST, Mowing (if no rain) or what the heck watching the Horse race.
