Andy, I still have 1/2 a smile on my face from slims post..

The sub frame has been powder coated white, I would have much rather it done in Satin Black as it shows up every mark but that is the way Andrew brought it..

Andrew has only loosely assembled the suspension gear thus far so its now a matter of tensioning every thing up..

My next job..

Thank you and have a good one..

All,

I am not sure wether you recall but I scored the holly grail of bench grinders out in this neck of the woods some time back from my brother who picked it up at a Defence force surplus auction.

A Waldown 8" three phase bench grinder..

http://brobo.com.au/products/

View media item 58317
The deal was conditional how ever and that is I repair his newly acquired GMF 8" single phase bench grinder of a similar vintage which was his preference.

So the long and the short of it the GMF had a real lazy start even though he had put a new start cap in it.:headscrat

So back to the Shed Downunder, up spec the start cap, fit new plug top and replace non period correct end cover shield screws ( Phillip's head screws are not a nice look on something of this vintage ) hit the go button and it snaps into life..

View media item 68173
He would like to keep it as it is rather than restore it only just replacing the bearings..

We are both happy campers..

I must say I have a bench grinder fetish although I have never allowed myself to indulge, just cheapies. I'm a chump, you know. somebody had a signature line "Cheap tools are for chumps" so I climbed on board as a chump.

Both marvelous grinders. I suppose you are going to make a non-rotating three phase converter for your grinder?

I must say, the GMF has a killer rest adjustment. Big and hefty and fully adjustable, and a killer if it vibrates loose during work.:bounce:

Is that a green wheel on his?

1/2: it's my goal to have 4 or 5 grinders set up with different wheels so i can move from one wheel to the next. i already own all the grinders and then some and just need the space to set them up. then i'll have my 3/4 Baldor buffer to spiff up them up to finish.

Andy raised a good question that if i remember correctly you answered a while back. i think you said you already have 3 phase power in your Shed. yes? do all Aussie's garages have 3 phase or did you have to pay a little extra to get it in yours?

congrats on figuring out the fix for brother's grinder to make the deal work out.

I'm starting to turn a little blue from crossing my fingers that your engine swap works like you are hoping it will. best of luck with that.

cheers

Andy, thank you.

There is nothing like a real good bench grinder ( or two, now may be three) .;)

In total I have five, one 6” as a spare, one three phase 8” that needs restoration that has cast brass tool rests then a 6 “ and 8” that are permanently mounted on stands and fully operational, all have different wheel for various jobs and the 8 “ has a belt linisher on it which is the most used one out of the lot of them. I need to find some space for the new ( old ) 8 “ Waldown now

The GMF is one nice bench grinder and really personifies its era and yep that’s a green wheel..

I do have three phase in the Shed Downunder, it makes life so much easier let me tell you.

Well done 1/2 Cup and now two happy brothers.

rmalkow, The deal has been a win, win for both of us.

drives, thank you.

Space is my issue as well.:headscrat

I put the three phase power on be for all our network was privatised at a time when it was relatively easy to do so, now you would have to sell your soul to get it. A thee phase supply in a residential area is the exception rather than the rule. The three phase mains are feed from the overhead point of supply into the metering position then to the house main switchboard which has a sub main feeding the Shed Downunder.

The GMF was an easy fix fortunately, testimony to its build quality.

I have been pottering away with the MG F after work this week, the lightened fly wheel, clutch plate and pressure plate are all completed now and I may even get the gearbox mated up to the engine tonight so little by little we are getting there. Still waiting on more small parts to arrive from the UK this week.

Thank you one and all, have a great day..

I think the grinder repair counts as one of those trivial jobs that you have been ticking off lately, good work

GB

GB, you are spot on there.;)

Its has been hanging over my head for months now.

Another project done and dusted.

PS the weather was perfect this morning here so we took the opportunity to get in some flight time with the Drone at work, this time it was " getting up close and personal " to buildings and structures. we had a ball testing the boundries..:thumbup:

Have a good one and thank you..

1/2 should be able to grind dozer blades on that monster. Might be a little hard to sharpen a pair of nail clippers though? Nice piece.

1/2: if i had your welding skills i'd already have my grinders set up on a plate on a hitch type attachment that i could plug into a bench. that way instead of taking up a wall or bench full of grinders at the ready which i won't use often i'll have them up on a shelf to grab and use the day i need them. you seem to get around most of GJ so i bet you've seen this thread, but if you haven't or maybe one of your follower's hasn't here's a link to a thread i started a few years ago showing some of the member's ideas on how to mount their vises and grinders.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799&highlight=vise+grinder+stands

here' a picture of one of my favorite welding tables with a trailer hitch type vise for it's vise that can be removed if you need more flat surface or exchanged for a different vise if you need one with swivel jaw, pipe jaws or just bigger or smaller.

another member has all his machinist vise on a hitch mounted tower that he can bolt into a bench or remove the vise and put on his mill or lathes. i think there is a member that has posted a grinder set up like i mentioned or maybe they are waiting for me to make mine.

drives, thank you for your input on this one:thumbup:

I really do have to step back and look at the big picture in the Shed Downunder at the moment my layout works for me but only just as it is only relatively small compared to some so I do struggle a bit at times with elbow and storage room.

In speaking with Mrs 1/2 Cup the other night we agree that once the MG F rebuild is out of the way that the Storage Solution beside the Carport will be back on the agenda and our next major undertaking.

I quite often visit that thread as there is some fantastic ideas and inspiration there.

Pretty fine rack you got there Bub!:rocker::rocker:

Does the trailer hitch wiggle a bit?

Andy, ditto and I must ask that question as well..

Thank you one and all - yet again.

Have a great day..

1/2 & Andy: that unfortunately isn't my table. i know a lot of guys drill a hole in the side of the tube, weld a nut on the outside over that hole and then when the tube with the vise or grinder slides in they put a bolt in that nut and tighten the tube in place to eliminate any slop if that makes sense.

here's sort of the table I have the parts to build 2 of them and just waiting for my neighbor to have time and me to have some space to really press him to do them since i gave him the materials to build one for himself and we made it two years ago and he loves his.

i guess i need to start a thread about DRIVESITFAR'S HARDWARE STORE or something like that so i can maybe get some good ideas about how to improve without getting PUNKED by a few of the let's say less smart or maybe less happy members.

cheers and again always a pleasure seeing what you have been up to. DRONE FLYING, finishing up a race car and back to finishing your AMAZING CARPORT!!

Thanks Drives! I guess if you put a set screw pressing into a corner of the interior tube you could put a lot of force on it to stabilize the vise. I just don't think I would be happy with a vise that wasn't solid. Saw a video last night of a guy pounding on a vise which was not even bolted down. Had a block under the moveable jaw and he was following it around the table as he pounded on his work.:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil

Andy: or you can build a stand like ROYCE does and i bet your vise won't go anywhere. lots of choices especially if you have as many benches and vises as most of us do.

1/2: i hope i'm not cluttering up your thread to much with vise and welding bench ****, but this is sort of like the bench i'm going to build two of that are 63x26 cause i own 2 pieces of 3/4 inch steel plate that big for their tops. i can use them as regular benches and then if i get a bigger project i can use them sort of like saw horses.

drives, I have been looking at all the hitch arrangements, heck there is some well thought through and well built ones out there..

You should start putting the pressure on your neighbour to get cracking on your table..;) I would wait till after your daughters wedding, but it would get you going to make some space for it..:willy_nil

A hardware and storage thread is a great idea:thumbup:

In the Shed I do like to have a little of every thing, sort of get me out of trouble stuff, the inevitable project left overs do mount up but its about organising and controlling that to some extent.

With now with every project I always check what I have in stock before making a trip to a hard ware store..

Thank you for your kind comments..

Andy,

I guess whether you use a hitch or bolt a vise solidly it is a ultimately a matter of application.

Your video is a classic example of what not to do..:headshake

drives, clutter my thread... never..

Your contributions are always welcome..

I do recall that bench build, IMHO that has it all.

I must admit to drooling over that bare metal vise stand as well.

Thank you one and all, the week end is upon us out here now..:3gears:

Enjoy..

1/2: yep the ORGANIZING and building the welding tables is up there on my TO DO LIST!! thanks for the support.

I for one am looking forward to seeing what you build for storage next to your carport and wishing you the best. i can't imagine what Mrs. 1/2 has been up to with no dog doings lately and hoping her knee is getting better. is it and is she resting and getting ready to go at it 24/7 again?

TDU: yep i wish all those were mine. our resident GJ member ROYCE that made that one double rotating stand out of scraps he had laying around and the other one out of an old fire hydrant is amazing and he has several threads about those and other cool stuff he makes in Fabrication if you want to get more EYE CANDY.

i think CHUCK REESE(I think is the guy's name) is the one that built the space age stand and that huge handle for that big vise or maybe he had it made for him.

the welding table was just one Ryan saw and put on the cover of GJ about 4 years ago that i've always liked and i'm just tweaking it a bit for my uses.

hope you all DOWN UNDER are going to have a great SUNDAY!!

Drives, great stuff, although my organising is not too bad in the Shed Downunder there is always room for Continual Improvement.

Corporate Policy in the Shed Downunder on my weekly To Do List from now on and that is " include at least one trivial job on that list every week" .

There is some fantastic examples of that on the GJ:thumbup::thumbup:

You may recall I went through many iterations before I came up with the "Containeresque Storage Solution"

The design is set in stone now..

Mrs 1/2 Cup went down to Melbourne for the first show she has been to this year ( not showing ) but just helping out.
Her knee is gradually improving, the new exercise bike has been a great help. She has another appointment with the Osteo this week to map a way forward..

With Mrs 1/2 Cup being away yesterday I had a full day of QST :3gears:

I pretty much spent the whole day setting up the MG F sub frame and suspension so now its ready to drop the engine and gear box in ( when I finish it.)

Pics to follow..

Thank you for dropping by and have a good one..

All, its amazing what you can get done in a day with just a little UNINTERUPTED QST..

With Mrs 1/2 Cup away for the day and the lawns that can wait until next weekend, I made some great progress on the MG F

The sub frame is now complete and ready for the engine and gearbox install.

. The Hydro gas suspension - completed.
. Top suspension arms - completed.
. Suspension bushes - completed.
. Every nut and bolt tensioned - completed.
. Longitudinal engine supports - completed.

. The drive shafts, hubs and brake assemblies will be installed after the engine is in..

View media item 68301
The engine and gearbox are also getting close to be as one now.

. Engine mountings - completed.
. Clutch slave cylinder - rear engine mount on the gearbox - completed.
. Clutch alignment completed.

View media item 68302
Today has been a bit of a run around day and not a lot done in the Shed Downunder.

. Returned the bench grinder to my brother, one happy camper..
. A quick trip to my Dads to help with putting the roof on his garden shed with my younger brother.
. The honey do's as per usual.

I should get some more QST this arvo.

Thank you one and all, have a good one..

Fantastic work Steve.:rocker:
I bet you and your son can't wait to give the motor a good workout.

Thank you Aaron its getting close now let me tell you.
I can't wait to turn the key for the first time then get this puppy on the dyno.:3gears:

Very impressive. Looks like you did not get the rain today that we had.

HOTFR8, thank you.

No, no rain just a sprinkle but it was a cracker of a day, almost jumper weather..

A couple of hours later and its all one, now for the detail..

One productive week end...:rocker:

Note to file and warning: No fasteners were clocked in its assembly..

You do make me smile.

With a result like that, you really can be excused for not clocking the fasteners.

Insomnia you old friend has been about a few days, but also means I can go start looking at what needs fixing on my "Prozac for the Soul" later on. It's 06.20am now. And chilly outside.

Have a good evening.

The weather here is a little chilly in the morning but really pleasant as we head into Autumn.

I am to bed early and up early ( 4.00am ). when I hit the sack the lights are out let me tell you..

Have a good one..

I'm pretty sure Andrew won't be interested in a table. On the other hand, a plexi cover on the engine compartment would work well. Imagine that piece of art visible here:

The engine looks great and like a real hottie. Imagine that little gem turned in the north/south direction and hiding under the hood of a lowered Model A roadster hot rod!! :3gears:

Hmmmm….. maybe you need to build another and start a new project.

Engine looks great!

Coop, thank you.

Getting there and we are pretty pleased how it has come together.

My vote is to put a piece of glass on motor/subframe and call it a beautiful dinner table.

On the CSS, will the panel inserts be metal?

Shorty, that would make it one expensive piece of designer furniture let me tell you..

The panel insert Containeresque Storage Solution ( CSS ) on the will be all metal corrugated Colour Bond sheets.

X2 on the display table for the house:thumbup::thumbup:

Looking really good!

Andy, I don’t think Andrew would take kindly to using it as a display table, mind you the idea does have merit.;)

Thank you..

Bob, Now there is an top idea.;)

As you can see the MG F does not have a lot of elbow room to move. I thought a Mini engine bay was a little cramped but Rover has taken engine bay cramped to a new level. :willy_nil

rmalkow, I only hope it goes as good as it looks.

These engines are used in a north /south configuration in some sports cars and lend them selves very well to that.

As for using one in the Model A…… I will give that a miss as I have a Model B engine with a counter weight crank to do just that ( when time permits )

Almost a shame this will be hidden in a chassis :) Throw a big sheet of plexi over that and you have the coolest coffee table ever. You are a machine 1/2 !

Dennis, thank you..

I would be like extracting Andrews teeth for him to let go of it.

MOE mmm now there is a plan maybe it doesn't leave here until he pays my wages bill:evil:

Well, if you can't afford a nice table for Mrs. 1/2, we will understand. :dunno: But you're almost there!:willy_nil

Andy, Mrs 1/2 Cup has some real nice coffee tables that I built for her, just because. As for affording a coffee table like that, no and I trust you understand...:lol_hitti

PS, can you imaging just how many tool and lathes I could buy for that..:willy_nil...........................................lots and I would need a bigger shed..;)

Thank you...

Have a good one guys..
