I must say I have a bench grinder fetish although I have never allowed myself to indulge, just cheapies. I'm a chump, you know. somebody had a signature line "Cheap tools are for chumps" so I climbed on board as a chump.
Both marvelous grinders. I suppose you are going to make a non-rotating three phase converter for your grinder?
I must say, the GMF has a killer rest adjustment. Big and hefty and fully adjustable, and a killer if it vibrates loose during work.
Is that a green wheel on his?
Well done 1/2 Cup and now two happy brothers.
1/2: it's my goal to have 4 or 5 grinders set up with different wheels so i can move from one wheel to the next. i already own all the grinders and then some and just need the space to set them up. then i'll have my 3/4 Baldor buffer to spiff up them up to finish.
Andy raised a good question that if i remember correctly you answered a while back. i think you said you already have 3 phase power in your Shed. yes? do all Aussie's garages have 3 phase or did you have to pay a little extra to get it in yours?
congrats on figuring out the fix for brother's grinder to make the deal work out.
I'm starting to turn a little blue from crossing my fingers that your engine swap works like you are hoping it will. best of luck with that.
cheers

I think the grinder repair counts as one of those trivial jobs that you have been ticking off lately, good work
GB

1/2 should be able to grind dozer blades on that monster. Might be a little hard to sharpen a pair of nail clippers though? Nice piece.
1/2: if i had your welding skills i'd already have my grinders set up on a plate on a hitch type attachment that i could plug into a bench. that way instead of taking up a wall or bench full of grinders at the ready which i won't use often i'll have them up on a shelf to grab and use the day i need them. you seem to get around most of GJ so i bet you've seen this thread, but if you haven't or maybe one of your follower's hasn't here's a link to a thread i started a few years ago showing some of the member's ideas on how to mount their vises and grinders.
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799&highlight=vise+grinder+stands
here' a picture of one of my favorite welding tables with a trailer hitch type vise for it's vise that can be removed if you need more flat surface or exchanged for a different vise if you need one with swivel jaw, pipe jaws or just bigger or smaller.
another member has all his machinist vise on a hitch mounted tower that he can bolt into a bench or remove the vise and put on his mill or lathes. i think there is a member that has posted a grinder set up like i mentioned or maybe they are waiting for me to make mine.
Pretty fine rack you got there Bub!
Does the trailer hitch wiggle a bit?

1/2 & Andy: that unfortunately isn't my table. i know a lot of guys drill a hole in the side of the tube, weld a nut on the outside over that hole and then when the tube with the vise or grinder slides in they put a bolt in that nut and tighten the tube in place to eliminate any slop if that makes sense.
here's sort of the table I have the parts to build 2 of them and just waiting for my neighbor to have time and me to have some space to really press him to do them since i gave him the materials to build one for himself and we made it two years ago and he loves his.
i guess i need to start a thread about DRIVESITFAR'S HARDWARE STORE or something like that so i can maybe get some good ideas about how to improve without getting PUNKED by a few of the let's say less smart or maybe less happy members.
cheers and again always a pleasure seeing what you have been up to. DRONE FLYING, finishing up a race car and back to finishing your AMAZING CARPORT!!

Thanks Drives! I guess if you put a set screw pressing into a corner of the interior tube you could put a lot of force on it to stabilize the vise. I just don't think I would be happy with a vise that wasn't solid. Saw a video last night of a guy pounding on a vise which was not even bolted down. Had a block under the moveable jaw and he was following it around the table as he pounded on his work.![]()

Andy: or you can build a stand like ROYCE does and i bet your vise won't go anywhere. lots of choices especially if you have as many benches and vises as most of us do.
1/2: i hope i'm not cluttering up your thread to much with vise and welding bench ****, but this is sort of like the bench i'm going to build two of that are 63x26 cause i own 2 pieces of 3/4 inch steel plate that big for their tops. i can use them as regular benches and then if i get a bigger project i can use them sort of like saw horses.

Fantastic work Steve.
I bet you and your son can't wait to give the motor a good workout.

Very impressive. Looks like you did not get the rain today that we had.
A couple of hours later and its all one, now for the detail..
One productive week end...
Note to file and warning: No fasteners were clocked in its assembly..
You do make me smile.
With a result like that, you really can be excused for not clocking the fasteners.
Insomnia you old friend has been about a few days, but also means I can go start looking at what needs fixing on my "Prozac for the Soul" later on. It's 06.20am now. And chilly outside.
Have a good evening.
1/2 Cup, the engine & subframe look brilliant, clocked fasteners or not. Your scotch is well deserved.

Engine looks great!
My vote is to put a piece of glass on motor/subframe and call it a beautiful dinner table.
On the CSS, will the panel inserts be metal?

X2 on the display table for the house
Looking really good!
I'm pretty sure Andrew won't be interested in a table. On the other hand, a plexi cover on the engine compartment would work well. Imagine that piece of art visible here:

The engine looks great and like a real hottie. Imagine that little gem turned in the north/south direction and hiding under the hood of a lowered Model A roadster hot rod!!
Hmmmm….. maybe you need to build another and start a new project.![]()

But you're almost there!
Almost a shame this will be hidden in a chassisThrow a big sheet of plexi over that and you have the coolest coffee table ever. You are a machine 1/2 !

Well, if you can't afford a nice table for Mrs. 1/2, we will understand. But you're almost there!
