Steve glad your dad is OK. My neighbor took out my mail box a few months ago while talking on a cell. She is in her early sixties. Her mother is in her nineties and she stopped me when she saw me crossing the road to the shop, rolled the window down, and with a mischievous grin on her face told me that her and her daughter had an argument the day before about her being too old to still be driving even though she had no accidents for years. The next day, after clocking my mail box, she said her daughter quietly tabled the discussion. She added that she just stopped to thank me for getting her off the hook, as my mail box was the large package type and not easily missed. Thought a little real life humor might take the edge off the stress. Bobby

Sometimes a minor accident is just the ticket. My dad drove by rumble strip feel and his car's edge of lane alert. Fortunately no accidents, I think. A small accident like this could have offered the opportunity to get him to stop driving and avoid a fatal one.

Now if you tell us your dad was texting his girlfriend at the time I guess he can just keep driving.:willy_nil

Rodent duty does have it's QST advantage:thumbup:

1/2: sorry to hear about your Dad's little fender bender and happy to hear it was only car damage and he wasn't hurt at least physically. since he seems to be still pretty active would he really stop driving? what did he have to say about the accident?

my dad stopped driving maybe 10 years ago i'm guessing and he just hops in the passenger's seat now and doesn't attempt to drive anymore. my mom is 84 and gets around just fine and i'm sure her day is coming when that won't be the case. She actually asked me to drive 20 minutes to meet her to fill up her gas tank about 6 months ago when my dad was in a nursing home recovering from his knee replacement. She had never actually filled up any of her cars with gas. remember in the old days when you used to get gas at the local station where the attendant would fill up the tank, check the oil, wash the windows? well she went from that era to having my dad fill up her gas tanks and take care of any of the car's needs. i couldn't drop what i was doing so i told my mom to just push the wheelchair button so the attendant would come out to help her and since she wanted to learn how to fill up her tank she watched and now she fills up her own tank.

best of luck with Dad's issues and maybe he can buy the house on the other side of you if it's still for sale so he won't have to drive to see his favorite son?

Rodent duty doesn't sound so bad now that they are not puppies or are they still a handful and destroying things?

i'm not going to mention this, but it seems like that job of yours does have a few perks with all the 3 and 4 day weekends or have you been storing up and it just seems like you've had a lot of time off this year?

you needed a rest from the busy year you've had at the SHED DOWNUNDER so no apology necessary. we're sorry we didn't keep the thread going with talk about the weather (did that hurricane or typhoon hit anywhere near you) or clocking screws or something else while you were MIA.

we'll try to do better next time I'm certain.

Cheers

Sorry to hear about the accident involving your dad and all that entails to deal with, car repairs and your dad's driving future. Just glad to hear he is ok and no one was hurt. All other things can be fixed or repaired. Best wishes as you help him through this.

Glad your Dad is ok. I remember being very scared riding with my 90 year old Grandfather... Scary!

Coop, thank you.

I am just so pleased that no one was hurt, we all had an inkling that this may happen.

Glad your dad is ok Steve.

I hope your wife and MIL have a great time in Coffs Harbour.

4 day weekend I'm expecting great QST and updates.

Aaron, thank you.

I am sure that they will have a great time catching up with familly that are spread across Australia.

I am sure looking forward to the four day weekend but I do have to call into work for a BBQ lunch and fill out my time sheet tomorrow..

At least that is one meal I don't have to cook ;)

A lot to ponder sounds like - do they take away his license. Oh that will be a sad thing to deal with. My Dad still has his license but has not driven since 2014 after he had surgery so I do not have that issue to deal with but every so often he says he will drive again although I think he knows it is not a good idea. What ever happens 1/2 you have a lot to work through and I wish you well with what ever you do.

HOTFR8, we have a bit to work through a familly for sure. At this point we have suggested to Dads doctor that he does not drive at night as a first step. We have contacted his older sister ( my auntie with who he respects her wisdom ) she handed her licence in a couple of years ago to give her the heads up.

Bobby I can relate very well to your experience very well as Dad did a similar thing with a friends mail box, not a word was spoken however the bush telegraph soon enlighten us.

Note to file I do check his car out all the time for any additional bruises and it was pretty evident he had given something that was originally in a vertical orientation had creased his bumper..:shocking:

Not a word was spoken..

Andy, you are 100% correct as I believe this scare will be the catalyst to have some serious discussion for sure..

Dad and technology should never be in the same sentence as he does not know how to text let alone retrieving voice mail..:lol_hitti

Yep just me and the rodents...:3gears:

Drives, thank you.

Dad ( as cautious as he is ) pulled over to let another car past and simply did not see a parked dark coloured car at night simple as that.

Dad lives mere minutes from here it is never a problem for us to call by at any time. We do have a medi alert system just in case. He missed his regular system check a week ago and the controller alerted us within minutes..

All the rodents are pretty much under control and easily managed so no issues there..

Let me assure you any days I have off are taken as annual leave:thumbup:

The big issue I have is that I don't get enough of them and are usually in debt where I owe the company ..:lol_hitti We get 20 days leave per year..

Mrs 1/2 Cup and her Mum are flying just south of the cyclone tomorrow so its going to be an extremely wet welcome as they have had a huge amount of rain

PS she did take an umbrella:thumbup:

rmalkow, thank you.

As a familly we are all together on this one nuts, bolts and panels can be fixed for sure..

Dad is on proud type bloke and can be stubborn at times however this a great transition into reality..

1/2, glad to hear your Dad is ok. Difficult decisions ahead. Be well.

Dennis, thank you:thumbup:

We do have some soul searching to do but hopefully given what he has been through that it will make the decisions that much easier..

Again thank you one and all. Your support is truly appeciated

Steve, your Dad sounds very similar to mine but the accident has certainly given him a reality check and made the discussion that much easier to have.

We are still waiting on the insurance assessor to evaluate his car..:dunno:

I am looking forward to the four days off let me tell you

I actually slept in this morning and woke at 7 am + three hours from my normal wake up time of 4 am..

Have a great day..

good to have a sleep in the body sometimes needs the extra rest , yep l hope that my dad doesn't have a incident and that he realises that he is having trouble with driving when the time comes .glad your dads ok cheers

Steve, I felt great today after that plus three hours extra it the first time I have do so in I cant remember how long.

I did check in on Dad this morning and he is doing well, just some soreness from the seat belts:thumbup:

We put his car up on the hoist at my brothers this afternoon before the insurance assessors get there and it appears that it will be an easy fix:

1 x front guard.
1 x strut.
1 x bottom suspension arm
1 x steering rack
1 x wheel alignment.

Still a work in progress.

You might need to start the discussion with your Dad as soon as, we consider ourselves lucky.

Thank you and have a great weekend..

You, Super Mod, actually slept till 7am. . . I'm amazed.

And I was a lucky one when it came to my Father's driving, he failed a peripheral eye test at the Roads Dept, and much to his disgust, they took away his license just before he turned 80. Now Mum has to drive everywhere (& shes 80 in July), & boy does Dad give her some grief sometimes.

Lyndon
Hurray, Friday is over (can't complain too much - the week didn't start for me till Tuesday!)

Hey Lyndon I intend to do the same tomorrow and come to think of it our daylight savings ends Saturday night ( now I know why I am over it )

Dad is a tough nut to crack but this has been the wake up call we all needed to break the ice. My sister and I have an appointment with his doctor next week to discuss this very issue.

My Dad is no different to yours let me tell you even with me driving but I just let it go to the keeper..:willy_nil

Its over the yard arm here and I am looking forward to starting my work week on Tuesday as well. I went to work today as we had a BBQ lunch so I checked my emails as you do to lighten the load next week and I got snarled at for doing ( in the nicest way ) so because I was supposed to be on leave.

Have a good one.

I know what you mean. When I came back from my 2 weeks off I had 331 emails to get through (hence the quietness over on my thread for a while. . . . :eyecrazy:).

Any head start you can get is a welcome relief. . .

Count yourself lucky. My last job I was averaging 150 emails per day. A bit lighter on the weekends, but you had to address three per minute (always a few exceptions) to get through them in an hour. And granted most took a few seconds. (thanks for your response etc.) Did a lot of email response in meetings and in airports on the phone. You can understand joke emails were not appreciated but they got deleted within two seconds. And you had to watch the spam and junk folders (why were there two?) as the computer was easily fooled by repeat customers with the same subject. And then there were folks sending emails with high priority. You could pretty much trash those without reading them, they were just looking for attention. I tried to get to work a couple of hours early every day to get something done before the meetings started. And even though we had a lot of email storage if you didn't keep cleaning out email would get full and a frenzy would set in. :willy_nil:willy_nil It was quite a relief to get off that train.

Sorry, not one upmanship, just memory of a nightmare.

Andy, that amount of emails becomes in unmanageable, thats obscene :willy_nil

I am much like you and get to work two hours ahead of my official work start just to clear the decks so to speak.

I get as many as Lyndon and struggle at that amount. Fortunately we don't get a whole heap of junk mail as our systems filter most of it out. That said I have to respond to 90% of them in some form or another.

Our emails on our corporate network are accessible on our I Phones, handy at times but a trap and can do your head in.:willy_nil

Listening to Cartalk now and I believe our roving reporter HOTFR8 will be on air soon.

Just getting back on my feet from a week long flu/ cold/ :dunno:

Glad your dad is okay. Making decisions about a loved one lifestyle can be very difficult. You want to do the right thing but when it's their life it sometimes leaves hard feelings. I don't envy what you are going through. I'm sure the best route will be taken.

Glad to hear you treated yourself to a little extra nap time. Sometimes it's just what one needs.

Sadly I am not on the committee for the Street Rod Nationals but I did help organize the guest.

HOTRF8, the Street Rod Nationals pretty much dominated Cartalk yesterday and it was a great insight into the event..

Dan, there is nothing worse than a cold or flue, you can not fight it other than rest and plenty of fluids. Glad to here you are on the mend..

With Dads situation it is just a day at a time at this point. All the family are pitching in together to help and are all on the same page as to the way forward.

As for the extra sleep ins we gained another hour as daylight savings ended here over night and I have woken really refreshed this morning.

The last two days have seen little QST but I did get a full day yesterday of Quality Garden Time ( QGT ) just doing all those little jobs that I tend to put off, then put off.

. Fertilize.
. Trim.
. Detail and some.
. Dead head the roses ( Mrs 1/2 Cup usually does this )
. Clean up leaf litter.
. I finished mulching some garden beds with a half a yard of bluestone that had been sitting in the trailer for a couple of weeks now. Still a bit more to go after I do some planter boxes for Mrs 1/2 Cup..
. Blower vac path ways
. Trim and manicure the Chinees Ficus creeper on the front brick fence.
. Prune back one only Bougainvillea that grows like you would believe.

You sit back at the end of the day and can feel so much satisfaction from a full day in the garden. Realy worth the effort..

I also spent a bit of time cleaning out the garden shed, which had become a little cluttered.

QGT

I'm getting ready to do some QFT (Quality Field Time), driving an old Farmall around doing farm things. Like spraying for weeds. Maybe even fertilizing.

Your garden shed is about as full as mine, but yours looks organized. Sometimes I wonder why my Garden Shed won't hold all the stuff I have to put in it? Yours also look crystal clean compared to the dirt strewn mess mine is in. Your roll up door is the way to go!!

Best Regards

Andy, I guess it is that time in your neck of the woods. All of our grain crops have finished now. There is still plenty of Sorghum standing that goes to silage and the last of the apples and pears are being picked as we speak. The weather is getting cooler of an evening and we have had some cracker days.

All the best with your QFT..

its full let me tell you and reasonably organised. That said I have to move a lot of stuff to access things which can be a pain. At least I can say I have absolutely no garden equipment in my workshop..

A roller door was a must have when I built it.

One of my next projects will be The Storage Solution which will basically give me another three of these but will be a whole heap wider and built in a shipping container style.

Thank you one and all for dropping by and have a great day..

1/2, as always, your level of industry is inspiring :) That garden shed looks like serious storage..something very much on my own to do list. I'm guessing with no snow risk a flat roof is workable there?

Dennis, thank you:thumbup:

The garden shed is great, I built it some years back after a frustrating search for something that fitted the space and was of reasonable structural integrity.

We certainly do not have snow here, the only thing I have issue with is leaves in the gutter which is pretty easily managed.

Thank you again for dropping by and have a great day..

Reply to ½Cup's thread....(take 2)...

Hey Steve, I finally caught up on your thread yesterday (I had to go back quite a few pages) and typed comments to several events mentioned - however, the GJ gremlins ate it all and wouldn't spit any of it back out.

So here is the condensed version (from memory, and not neccessarily in chronological order)...

* congrats on your new status as a "Super Moderator".

* watching the MG engine leave must have been like sending a puppie to a new home.

* the drawer fronts look great.

* sorry to hear about your Dad's mishap - but as you suggested, it may provide the catalyst for some deep and meaningful conversation.

I made a comment on Bob Heine's thread recently about the time that my mother waved back at a policeman and kept on driving - from various reports later, we believe that he was actually directing selected vehicles into an RBT (Random Breath Testing) check. :eyecrazy::lol:

Deep and meaning full conversation with Dad has already started, softly softly at the moment.
I did see your post on Bobs thread and just thought to myself I could imagine Dad doing the same.:willy_nil

Sad but true..

You have a large fan base eagerly awaiting TSS.

I will not call it the Final Solution as storage is never finished.

Your a good man for taking care of family members. If I remember correctly it was your sister that had a house fire or something a last year or so and what you did to help.

This is absolutely beautiful. There is a piece of you that does not wear the cape all the time. The GTS is a mess.:lol_hitti How does your OCD (CDO) allow you to sleep at night knowing you can't walk in there?:lol_hitti

You know I had to take that poke at you Steve.

Oh, and Andy, don't you think you spread enough of it here on the GJ?

akdiesel thank you.

As a family you do what you have to do, roll your sleeves up and into it:thumbup:

That was my Sister in Laws rental that went up in smoke a year or so back.
She has now settled into a new place near her mothers and a few of her other sisters, all is going well.

Have a good one and thanks for your visit:thumbup:

Dan, :lol_hitti

I cope with the mess by shutting the door on it, Out of Sight Out of mind.;)

Actually, that is an older pic but it is only marginally better now...way too much stuff..

The West Wing is rented.

It needs improvements?:willy_nil

You have exceptional renters, now we'll see how they fare during remodeling:lol_hitti

Andy, the West Wing could still do with a little Capital Improvement all part of the long term plan...;)

Our renters are absolutely fantastic and from the onset we made it clear that a carport was in order seeing I have taken over the shed for storage they have no issues with that at all.

Thank you one and all, have a great day..

1/2: i'd post a few pictures of a MESS almost in any areas of my garage, shop or storage that would put that neat and orderly garden tools shed to shame. is that sort of the design for the new storage you are building cause i like it?

also just because i usually don't see rust on any of your buildings is the bottom of your little garden tools shed rusting and can you maybe hit is with a wire brush and some primer or did the camera pick up more rust than there actually is.

so you might have read why I picked DRIVESITFAR? well it was the Ebay name i picked when i was 11th in the world long driving contest as a 48 year old senior, but i had to add that i'd drive pretty far if the price was right and i wanted the tool or thing.

well today i left the house at 3am and drove through 4 major Pacific NW cities 4 hours to pick up this little 135 pound REED 106 Vise. did i need it probably not, but need really doesn't control me and it's now mine. so i've still got a mess, but i have something else to sit in the middle of it.

cheers and hoping for the best with your DAD and the remodeling of the WEST WING.

Drives, no the design for the new Storage Solution is modelled around my take on a shipping container x 3 off

Ours is a relatively dry climate and as such rust around the bottom of the sheets is not an issue here, same with the Shed Downunder where the wall sheets were put up first then the concrete was poured at a later date and this also included a 10” concrete mower strip all round which has been there 30 years now and the sheets are showing now real degradation from doing this way, plus the fact we are 200 miles from the sea here.

That’s a pretty good effort with your golfing and something to be proud of.

With Ebay our account is a variant of Mrs ½ Cups name and I do similar however I do put a limit on what I believe an item is worth to me and try never exceed that limit as tempting as it may be.

Great score on the vise, that is the one thing I do not need any more of ( 5 is plenty )

Dads car is to be assessed today and hopefully we can get a move on for him.

I am still battling with council over the new car port in the West Wing, I may have lost the battle in some respects but I WILL win the war at the end of the day.

All, after a four day week at work I vow and declare that I am never taking leave a gain ( big statement there ½ Cup ) the work has just been piling up and I still haven’t caught up as yet.

My week went like this:

At work:

. Pump Station performance review.
. Tender for Electrical Services – evaluation matrix review.
. Technical Standards – review.
. Tender Consensus evaluation.
. First Aid pre training assessment questionnaire.
. Level two First Training.
. Emergency Warden training.
. The monthly update of our Project Management system and financial report.
. Pump Station preliminary design review.

At home:

. Service Mrs ½ Cups Honda City as she is making the 10 hour trip up past Sydney to Gosford for our No.1 Grandson Jayden’s 5th on Sunday. I am on rodent duty yet again this week end.
. Finally finished resetting all our clocks back to normal time.:willy_nil

In the Shed:

. ****** all, apart from cleaning everything up from the above service.

Not long to go now and the weekend is here, looking forward to some Real QST.

I trust your day has been a good one..

1/2: best of luck with the COUNCIL on getting the new West Wing's carport permitted to something close to what and where you want to build it. maybe Mrs. 1/2 needs to get involved and maybe a grandson in hand when she shows up at the COUNCIL'S office? :dunno:

i'm looking forward to seeing the STORAGE SOLUTION when that time comes and would there be any issues with that with the COUNCIL or maybe not cause it's smaller and just storage?

i hope you are not serious about not taking any more leave off the 7am-7pm job cause you deserve those days, but maybe it would make it easier and you'd get to use the new plasma cutter and maybe get in some more drone flying time if you showed up more often.

i won't ask for your GJ membership card or your MAN CARD since you mentioned you want to stop at 5 vises (vices), but just saying i have a few more and maybe cause we have a lot more choices available. some i've paid very little for and others maybe too much, but for a simple tool they really do have my interest.

i've been selling off or trading a lot of mine to members cause i really didn't NEED as many as i have. once i get a big shop and maybe need some funds for some big machines and maybe a car and or truck project i'm sure a lot of my vises will find new homes.

have a great weekend and hoping your SATURDAY is as productive as you want it to be even though you are on Rodent duty with Shelby.

cheers

Council approval.

How I would hate to have to listen to others tell me what is best for my property. While the concept of group approval to keep renegades like me under control, in most cases it appears to me that the desire to dominate and jealousy are far too often a part of council or board approval.

I do, of course, always discuss it with my cows first, then show them who's boss. They seem so apathetic about my projects...

Sounds like you have a full weekend ahead so I do hope you get some QSTT (Quality Shed Therapy Time) in as well as all the normal chores.
The new storage solution looks good. I like the shipping container idea myself and would love to have one on my property that was nicely updated to offer good appearance as well as function. Unfortunately my Township Board (somewhat like your Council) will not allow such containers on property. I understand the need for appearance standards in the area but too bad I can't dress one up and make it work as they are priced pretty low for the value.

Good luck with your Council approvals on the carport and with scratching off a few items from the never ending task list.

drives, at this point in time I think the Building Surveyor ( whom is doing our permit application ) has a workable solution sorted that will satisfy the Councils requirements, I should know more next week.

The Storage Solution should not be an issue with council but I am stretching the rules some what as these will not be a permanent or fixed structure:thumbup:

One thing I will be doing later in the year is perhaps taking a month of long service leave off just to get off the merry go round for a bit. One the subject of the drone our new unit should be here in the next few weeks so it am looking forward to getting trained on this new type..:3gears:

On my vises, I have five in operation and I clean forgot about the two leg vises ( out of service and in need of restoration ) so thats a total of seven now.
So I think I will draw the Vise count at that ( well if an offer come along that I can't refuse maybe I will reconsider.)

Having a top weekend so far and it is only Saturday lunch time now.:3gears:

I think I just got a bit tired looking at your work list 1/2. Been a bit crazy here as well :)

Dennis, I am hearing you. :willy_nil

My work gets a bit full on at times but that said the working week goes fairly quickly.

That is one thing I can never say with work and that is there is never nothing to do with my corporate calendar is usually booked up two week in advance with meetings and dead lines for stuff to be done. I have been putting my out of office on of late, just to get some breathing space.;)

Andy, I am hearing you on that score:mad:

Your cows know best..:lol_hitti

I should take that approach with our council, well maybe not on second thoughts..:scared:

rmalkow, thank you..

I do know that our local councils are looking hard at container storage as every second rural property seems to have one or more of them as yet another source of revenue. We certainly could not have a full size one in town but it appears there are rules for some that don't apply to others..:dunno:

All,

. Lawns done as it looks like rain here tomorrow.

The MGF update.

. Engine is in its final resting place.
. Andrew should have most things hooked up this weekend.
. My QST for today consists of rebuilding the drive shafts, new inner and outer CV joints.
. The brakes have had a total upgrade moving from an MGF Trophy car rotor ( 240 mm ) and calliper to the MGF Cup car 280 mm vented rotor with of course new calipers.
. New brake lines and bias valve still to done as yet.
. We are getting tantalisingly close to turning the key for the first time..:3gears:

Thank you one and all, now back to the shed..:3gears:
