1/2 shafts look good. Interesting that they are different lengths as the ones I have dealt with are the same.

It sounds like Andrew is making great progress and looking forward to the startup.

Dwight

Dwight, thank you:thumbup:

The MGF has a mid mounted East / West engine and gearbox arrangement and as such the gearbox/ differential are offset to the cars centre line, hence the different lengths.

I must say every thing is coming together nicely and we should be ready to fire the first shot later in the week. Andrew is getting a little impatient now and I have said to him the project gets 100% finished before we turn the key..

Thank again for your visit and have a great day..

100% finished before turning the key?:willy_nil

Does that mean waitning until the driveshafts are in to test run the engine?:willy_nil:willy_nil

I'm having trouble processing that :)

Andy, yep 100% finished:thumbup:

The drive shafts do have to go in as I would like the car sitting on all four feet before we test run the engine. Andrew has the back end up on jack stands at the moment and it is tough enough to be able to access the engine bay on one of these beasts at the best of times.

As part of the QA process I would like to do a final tick off on his To Do List first up.

We also have another issue that necessitates the car being on all fours and that as simple as it may sound I do not know how much engine oil this thing needs:willy_nil

The car has been fitted with an after market remote oil cooler which has been drained naturally as you do. To complicate the problem his old engine had a home made extended dip stick arrangement which we have reverted back to standard. I have not been able to find any documentation to quantify what the actual capacity of the cooler and lines may be, so it will be a trail and error thing first up to get it right.

Note to file the oil he uses costs around $125 per five litres.

Have a great day and thank you for dropping by..

All, just a quick update..

Lots of QST today, not in the Shed Downunder but at my Dads shed.

Images too shocking to post..:shocking:

But it has been amazing to see what a 2 ft x 7 ft bench can hold so once again it is amazing what a few hours of up close and personal can do.

Cheers, I hope your day is going well.

Me things painting the shafts a hot pink would make the car run faster and look better.

Steve, Thank you for not posting pics of what might be a twin to my bench.

Hmmm 5 liters is equal to 1.3 gallons so that would be a little more than 5 quarts, or $25 per quart. I think that is what they call black gold, but I would suspect that today it is synthetic. Looking forward to the startup.

This is one of the things that make knowing about things in other parts of the world, the comparison to our local area and prices and how things are done.

Shorty, I was thinking about painting the drives shafts but hot pink would not match the theme:lol_hitti

Note to file: Andrew has already painted them in black:thumbup:

Dads bench would rate as the worst I have ever seen:shocking: It will be interesting to see just how long it stays that way..:dunno:

PS my best guess is a week, may be two.:willy_nil any way I will keep the pressure on let me tell you..

Dwight, you are spot on there, a fully synthetic is liquid gold out here.

I have to admit I do find it fascinating comparing the cost of things between what you guys pay vs what we pay for things out here. To some extent it is all relative when you look at the big picture, however you guys pay far lees for tools and equipment than we do with out doubt.:headscrat

Some food for thought on that score..

Thanks guys, I trust you are having a good one..

Good progress 1/2 Cup, but sorry to hear of your dads accident and the dramas with council... Hope all is progressing well.

Oh, and I need to put my vote in for the next project in your shed. You gotta get that Model A done!

How much of price differential is due to government import fees and tariffs? Those sure vary all over the world, and most sound like a good thing to the creators but rarely do anything except stifle the economy.

Its all about the money. Even at the council level locally. Containers eliminate tax money for buildings in most areas. Jobs for friends and relatives, permit fees, jobs for building inspectors etc. and all this creates a need for higher taxes to pay for them thereby keeping property owners from having any desire to put up more buildings to keep their stuff in. How would anyone like to clock that SCREWED UP mess? :lol_hitti

Andrew, thank you..

Now the pressure is really on to finish the 1930 Model A roadster...:willy_nil

Seconding that!

Yet again this is going to a whole new level..:willy_nil:willy_nil

Andy, in one word LOTS.:shocking:

You are spot on they do vary all over the world and you do have to look at the issue holistically and I agree, free trade agreements and the like. It is certainly not a level playing field.

Bobby, our councils have a mandate to uphold what is set out by the state government in respect to the building codes. Again it is not a level playing field.
In my case I will go with the flow for now, do what I have to do and loose the battle but ultimately will win the war.

As my old boss told me on numerous occasions "1/2 Cup you will never beat the system but YOU can make it work for you":thumbup:

Thank you one and all, have a good one..

PS Mrs 1/2 Cup is still up in Gosford and will be making the 10 hour trip home tomorrow.

Now what's for dinner:dunno:

Yep, home delivery pizza sounds good tonight..

1/2 Cup, I had dinner with my brother (with the F) last night, and he's watching your thread closely for the results of that engine!

Andrew, thank you..

Its nice to know that what has been done here on the MGF can be of assistance in any way shape or form..

The first start is on Friday so I have every thing crossed that it goes well but reasonably confident we have done all we can to make it happen.

My intention is to post a you tube clip of the moment.

I am not sure whether you have posted before the specs of your brothers F, keen to learn more.

BTW how did you go with the cracks??

Cheers

1/2: WOW the engine starting is happening in a few days. i'll start crossing my fingers and toes now not that you need luck cause you did a great job, but a little luck is always a good thing.

hope the event happens and the video shows an engine purring like a kitten (or a big lion).

cheers

It's interesting, before a new engine starts you're full of uncertainty, is everything right? As soon as it fires, you immediately think "compression, fuel, ans spark, what else could it do?"

Andy, you are spot on there.

..The compression feels ok.
..Well we may have an issue with the spark ( recalling the loom rework I did ):dunno:
..Fuel, well that could be a wiring issue as well ( see above ):dunno:

I might add to your list:

..Odd noises or loud knocks. Heck I hope that cam timing is right.:shocking:
.. Can any one tell me what an engine ceasing to a holt sounds like?
..Leaks, when I say leaks I mean a pool of either oil or coolant or both under the car.:shocking:
..Smoke or flames emanating from the engine bay.:shocking:

Thanks again for dropping by and have a great day...

1/2 Cup, haven't got to the cracks yet... Maybe have a look this weekend. His is basically stock as a rock, bar converting from hydragas. That's why he had trouble keeping up with the target times in Targa High Country last year...

We'll be waiting and watching for your startup vid!

Andrew, what engine your brothers F running?

PS, I happen to know where I can get my grubby little hands on some go fast Rover K Series bits...;)

All, sadly we have had to pull the pin on hitting the key today on the new engine till later in the week end

You may recall Mrs 1/2 Cup was up in Gosford celebrating our No.1 grandsons Jayden's 5th birthday last week end returning home on Wednesday. Unfortunately our DIL, Briana and young Isaac were hit the a severe Gastro bug on that day and Mrs 1/2 Cup succumbing to it Thursday as well. I won't go into the gory details but I was summoned home from work mid morning yesterday and took her to the docs for an injection to stop the nausea which has at least one half of the symptoms under control. She is resting well and can now keep down fluids.

That makes me chief cook and bottle washer around here for a bit.

Note to file I have actually mastered the controls on the new washing machine and after reading the instructions found out where to put the washing powder in.

Have a great day and thank you for your visit..

Stockers 1.8, non VVC. It's not exactly fast in my opinion, but then I am known for having, erm, slightly more power than stock in most of my cars, so my opinion may tend to be discounted by some in my family!

I do think however that my brother would be interested in your proposition. As I say, having been unable to meet the target times in the TSD Targa competition on a few of the competition legs even driving flat out, he is quite interested in obtaining a few more horses...

1/2: it's nice of Andrew to wait until you are in full mind and body for the first turning of the key. plus i'm guessing he wants you 100% thinking about that engine when he does turn it.

you'll learn to do a few things in the house's kitchen as you've done in the Shed Downunder or just relearn them while Mrs. 1/2 is recovering. Mrs. Drives rarely gets sick either and i used to get a cold at least every year a week after Christmas when one or more of the family would show up with a bug. i wish Mrs. 1/2 the best and i really hope you don't catch what she's got.

did you keep the RODENTS alive and well while she was gone? Sounds like Dad's accident is a thing of the past or is he still going to drive after his car is repaired?

Sorry to hear of the bug going around. Common but quite uncomfortable and serious if not well cared for. My suggestion for your cooking experience is to make a list...

Is the Mgf a 160bhp or 143bhp? What size brakes does it have? Mgf's go well with the larger front brakes and a bias set up. Not much you can do to make the go quicker apart from the basics eg: good air filter, uprated fuel pump, good leads and plugs - along with keeping the engine well serviced.
The only other way to gain decent BHP on the mgf's is playing with internals cams etc.
if you want advice I'm more than happy to share from my learnings.

Andrew, I have to agree with you on that score that there is no substitute for shear grunt..:3gears:

I do need to pin down Andrew to see what he has got, but no doubt there is plenty hidden away in his shed...:willy_nil

She is doing well and touch wood I am not showing any symptoms yet.

Microwave and dishwasher makes me a kitchen master. Hope Mrs. 1/2 recovers soon.

Shorty, you are man after my own heart, now those two kitchen tools I can use.;)

Recovery is going well..

Steve you can handle it! We will pray for her quick recovery.

Bobby, thank you.

I have just done battle with the Easter Saturday crowds and picked up a few groceries to keep the pantry full.

Mrs 1/2 Cup is up and about this morning and doing well.

drives, Our familly is having a catch up today ( the first in many years I might add ) at my cousins place in Yarrawonga, about an hours drive from here.

http://www.yarrawongamulwala.com.au/

Andrew, Amy and young Aiden ( the newest member of our larger clan )will be representing us there sadly. I really do not want to spread the bug any further.

We still have two days left to get the MGF firing..

As for the house duties, keeping things up to scratch is not much of an issue, cooking on the other hand:willy_nil lets put it this way I do a great toasted ham and cheese sandwich and I am not to shabby on the BBQ either..

The rodents and Shelby are doing fine but were pretty excited about Mrs 1/2 Cups return..

Dads little accident still has not been assessed as yet, we have all pulled together to help with daily tasks and he is happy with that for now. To be honest we have not made a call at this point in time.

Andy, Mrs 1/2 Cup is doing well and you are right in saying that it can be very serious indeed. The doctor advised us that if she could not keep down fluids it means straight to hospital.

 I did a shopping list last night..

And completed that list this morning..

Thank you one and all, have a great day..

Andrew, its about time you joined in the conversation, welcome to the GJ..

Base everything, 143bhp, and 90% sure the small brakes. Can get him in touch if you're happy to?

Andrew (metalhead140 ) , meet Andrew..

1/2: is Andrew-357 your son? either that or you have a lot of guys showing up with your engine that i thought was fairly rare.

Andrew-357: welcome to GJ and if you are 1/2's son I (we) feel like we know you since you and your family and car are talked about in good spirits quite often. i think you might need to start your own garage gallery thread and include some cool racing pictures and information if you have any time to.

cheers
