Nice score on the wood work vice 1/2 Cup.

Here it is becoming cool to do woodwork again and competing with all the finely bearded millennials to get nice stuff these days. That vice would easily fetch over $100.

Makes me glad to see you getting back to a little bit of your good old self! Hope and a healthy disposition is part cure in itself. Keep it up and you'll be showing us youngsters a thing or two in no time. :)

Surely Mrs. 1/2 Cup knows the therapeutic value of a trip to the Big Box store.:bounce:

In the same vein, spending a bit of money is also very healthy.

You did so well on the vise. Another trip just to drop in on the gentleman is in order, even if there is nothing else for sale you might like. Another visit would surely be good for the both of you.

So glad this chemo was relatively benign.

Andy, Absolutely there is nothing like a little retail thereapy ( better still whole sale or picking up a bargain ) is great for the soul. Mrs 1/2 Cup was more concerned about me over doing things physically..

Speaking of retail therapy, my Warren and Brown tension wrench arrived the other day. Its calibrated to 2% and ranges from 0 - 25 nm which is just ideal for those smaller bolts up to 8 mm that are used in alloy engines, namely Rover K Series:thumbup:

I have already stripped the vise in readiness for the Solar E Bath today, the weather has been just ideal for all things solar at the moment and not too warm..

Don't worry I will be keeping in touch with the seller, mores the pity I did not take the opportunity to take some pictures to share..

This round of Chemo has been pretty good compared to the first. I am eating well and getting more active as each day goes by..

Awesome deal on that vise 1/2 Cup. Since it mounts underneath can it share duties on one of your existing benches?

rmalkow, thank you:thumbup:

I am still not sure that it can share the duties with my other basic wood work bench at the moment with out some serious mods.:dunno:
I will look at that when it has had its makeover..:headscrat

I was pretty happy with the deal and you are right in regards to the price you only have to check out EBAY for any Dawn or Waldown stuff it all commands big dollars..

I am feeling much better in myself and gaining more energy every day, Mrs 1/2 Cup is keeping me under control not to over do things but I am just Going With The Flow for the most part, if I need a rest or nap I do it..:rocker:

1/2: i've still got my fingers crossed and saying prayers for you to get to 100% or close to it and also rid yourself of that Cancer and visits to the Dr. for Cheemo or meds.

sounds like it's almost like you are Andy's schedule of 6 SATURDAY'S & 1 SUNDAY per week and as you keep getting healthier i bet work will be the last thing on your mind even though you seem to enjoy your job and it's challenges and unique fun you have there too.

take care and looking forward to seeing what your solar E Bath cooks up with that new Dawn.

maybe another bench project out of 100% wood on casters to move into a corner or keep over at the WEST WING to put the DAWN vice on?? here's a cute one i wish i would have kept if i had some space to roll out and hold some of the smaller wood projects to work on lately. these little wood vises can hold a pretty good size piece of wood if you ask them too.

cheers

Wood is a good balance especially when you need low key rehab. Keep up the good work Steve. Bobby

Bobby, thank you.

I totally agree, there is nothing like doing a project in wood at times, very satisfying to say the least:thumbup:

Drives, thank you.

We still have a bit to go with getting rid of my Cancer, however IMHO we are making some good gains every day.

I am still a little fatigued and lack a fair bit of energy so its still baby steps for me at the moment for a bit.

Funnily enough I had a few of visitors from work yesterday and I was actually great to catch up with not a lot of work talk at all.

I will try and get the Solar E bath set up today, with the visitors yesterday I did not get a whole heap done however it was a welcome break in the traffic in any case.

Speaking of a wooden I do have quite a bit of reclaimed Oregon that would make a great bench for the new/old vise that is shouting out to be transformed into a bench. Food for thought there..:headscrat

Thank you for your visit, have a great day..

1/2: great news that you had visitors and about your health gains.

just thinking if i did build a good wood workbench i'd put 2 of those Dawn (or in my case USA made) wood vises on each end cause i could hold a good size piece of lumber in them and use them for holding the wood while i handplane or use a router or drill holes or whatever.

also in case you have any of these floating around on your auction sites or garage type sales sites these old pattern maker vises are very cool. also some wood vises have a QUICK RELEASE button or lever that you can open them up to size and one turn to tighten. the blue one is an ENGLISH RECORD made in England vice that needs it's own E bath.

here's a pattern makers AMT made in Taiwan vise that might show up in your area cause it's a copy of the expensive and old Emmerts.

cheers and continued good luck and prayers sent.

drives, thank you so much.

I have had a lot of visitors over the time which has been great for the moral support that you get, similarly with txt and email messages. It has not been that difficult to manage and every one respects where I am at right now.
Still on the improve with no real side effects raising there ugly heads this morning so I am planning just pottering around ( see list below ) with stuff that I can manage.

You are right, another one of those vises would be great, nothing like a matching pair.
I did see another Dawn ( the same as mine) on a local buy and sell forum yesterday but after paying only $10 for mine I passed up on the $200 asking price.
I do have both Dawn and Record vises however there is one a neighbour has unused for many years and that is Woden Wood Vise with a quick release and bench to suit. This was from an funeral homes carpentry shop that his familly ran many years ago. I brought a set of Woden sash clamps off him some years ago that were used in casket making.

The Cancer Recovery To Do List.

• Replace front and rear security doors flywire. ( completed )
• Fit new castors to mid century Bendix office chair. ( procurement completed )
Dawn wood work vise restoration.
○ Dismantle. ( completed )
Solar EBATH ( completed)
○ Reassemble.
• Plant new season tomato seedlings. ( completed )
• Reseal kitchen and family room slate. ( next week )
• I have an old wine barrel that is just screaming for a make over. ( when ever i have nothing better to do with my time )
• List items for sale on our local buy, swap and sell.( just to clear some space )
○ Portable 12 cfm single phase compressor.
○ 2 - 2 HP single phase electric motors.
○ 3 - 5ft Burnbrite safety lights.
○ Misc. light fittings

• Exercise - walk daily.
• Eat well. I am actually putting on weight.
• Rest and smell the roses

Glad you are feeling better, sounds like that list will keep you occupied as well. I would put rest and smell the roses as the top one though.

Building a new wood bench sounds like a cunning plan - in between resting and smelling the roses.

Drives, there are Dawn quick release wood vices out in the wild, but I've never seen one that didn't sell for many times more than the $10 bargain 1/2 scored.

I forget what I paid for this 10" quick release jobby, but I don't remember getting too much change from a $100 note at the local dirt market.

f73c8e5e7ae4940ab57646fc362ed0e1.jpg

I haven't quite finished installing this on my old woodwork bench yet - a seemingly simple project which snowballed into shortening the bench by 8" overall, rearranging the shed to put it in a new location etc. etc.

These vices always benefit from a good set of hardwood jaw faces (yet to be cut and installed in my photo), and i prefer to set them so the top of the jaw faces are an inch or more above the highest metal part of the vice, but flush or a little proud of the benchtop.
This gives a deeper throat to the clamping area, and less likely to strike the vice body with a chisel or plane.

1/2 Cup, I just missed out on a pair of the Dawn screw jack stands on Ebay the other day - they ended up selling for near $130. I was the high bidder $70 clear of the next bidder until literally the last second. Oh well, the hunt continues...

Ralf99, the plan is working well at the moment, lots of rest and a little QST today..:rocker:
I will be fitting some hard wood faces to the unit as part of the makeover.

I just cant get over the prices for anything with a Dawn logo on it and it doesn't have to be in real good condition either.:shocking:

Its a shame you missed the jack stands but you can see what I mean..

I did set up the Solar E BATH this morning and its happily brewing away right now.

It is good news to hear that you are doing better. Looking forward to the projects.

You might find the attached link interesting while you are resting. They are preparing a Rover K for a run at Bonneville in a MG Midget in the 1 Liter class.

Dwight

Dwight, thank you..

Improving all the time at the moment, the only thing I have to be mindful of is kerbing my enthusiasm to get stuck into some projects again. Mrs 1/2 Cup is keeping an eagle eye on me that I don't over do it that's for sure.

Thank you so much for the link.:thumbup:
Its about 400 plus pages long and makes an very interesting read, for a K Series that is one radical engine. Andrew had a look at it this morning and its given him some ideas.

Thank you again... have a great day..

Happy Birthday Steve!

Birthdays aren't as big a deal as they were when I was a kid but I relish every one now. I know your health scare has made this one extra special so go make some noise with the supercharged MG. Even if you aren't back to full power, a supercharger certainly helps. I blame Lyndon for the supercharged Cadillac in my garage.

What Bob said ^^^^^ Happy Birthday - good to see you out and about, and in something super charged as well!!!!!

Oh, and Bob - I thought that Caddie was all about telling one of your grandkids that he wasn't getting the inheritance too early! But you really know you living when you've got a supercharged V8 under you.

Thank you very much Andrew:3gears:

It was certainly a privilege to be able to drive Henry being supercharged it was certainly different from what I expected from an engine of that vintage and quite the experience..
Looking forward to taking him for another run on the weekend..:3gears::)

Happy Birthday Steve!

Jon, thank you..

All, apart from running around in the MG I had a few hours of Quality Shed Time to myself and concentrated on the Dawn 9 " wood Vise, cleaning it down after the Solar E Bath

View media item 75660
The bath took off nearly three layers of paint as well as all the rust..

I still have to go over it with a wire wheel and paint it the period correct Dawn colour.

Enjoy your day..

1/2: so you painted the Dawn vise already? i'm guessing a rich red colour or got any pics?

so except for maybe adding some supports under the 4x4's to the 8x8's that it might be more for BLING than needed i'm done with the mailbox stand so here's a couple shots for you to enjoy while you are recovering from today's Cheemo.

you do look like a happy camper in those MG's that Andrew is coming over with and sounds like they are fun to drive too. still gaining a few pounds a week?

cheers
