Pretty sure that violates the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.
Seems to me they have to provide the parts for free if you are required to buy OEM parts and oil. They can require regular maintenance, just not require you to buy OEM if a suitable aftermarket part is available.
This requirement is only for the extended warranty. For the basic warranty there is no such requirement. I don't think it is in violation.

They do.

The DeWalt and IR ones at Farm & Fleet and TSC (respectfully) have looked pretty good for a long time. The cheaper models would be similar to what you have now, and the quality goes up from there.

My dad has ran an "OK" Black Max (striking resemblance to yours) since the mid 90s...5HP 80 Gallon 2 Stage. Really the only thing that can make her hot is sandblasting.

I do not agree. An extended warraty is nothing more than a service contract with a third party. Usually does not involve the OEM.

you can not agree all you like, but that's not the situation here. The owner of Eaton compressor has personally come out to my work to resolve an issue at no additional charge to me.

it makes more sense this way. they don't want to be doing service calls, so it's in their best interest to have as few as possible, and to fix things right the first time. there's a lot riding on their name. they want to know WHY their stuff has problems so they can avoid repeats in the future.

This isn't like buying a pickup truck to commute in and tow once a year. it's like buying a semi truck to haul for a living with. I put more hours on this compressor in a month than most people will put on their farm store discount compressor in 10 years. it's also a compressor that wouldn't make sense for most home shops.

Don't know the answer to that. This is what I was told to ensure you have the full 5 year warranty.

Thanks for the link. Looking like for the price, the Eaton still seems like the best deal. 7.5 hp and their quiet system for $2500. Pretty hard to beat.

Thanks for this, great info. You are right definitely more than I need, but can't beat it for the price, seems like I have made my decision. I also like I can drive over to Ohio and pick it up and avoid possible shipping issues and possible damage.

with my air consumption where it is now, a screw compressor makes more sense on paper. but where my air consumption SHOULD be, a piston unit makes more sense. So I got the piston unit and am working on the leaks. 60 years of improper maintenance to work through should keep me busy for a minute.

Sure it might make the manufacturer better willing to deal with you on an issue, but that is not my point.

My point is it is simply illegal to require you to buy OEM parts to maintain your equipment if there is aftermarket available. It doesn't matter if it is a lawn mower or a semi truck.

Maybe take some time to read the laws so you are a smarter consumer.

Here is a cut right out of the act. It mention a lawn mower, but it is just an example.

"Tie-In Sales" Provisions

In general, tie-in sales provisions are prohibited. A tie-in sales provision requires a purchaser of a warranted product to buy a particular item or service from a specified company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive the benefits of the warranty. For example, the following illustrates a prohibited tie-in sales provision:
"In order to keep your new X Brand Lawnmower warranty in effect, you must use genuine X Brand Lawnmower Blades. Failure to have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Y Maintenance Company, Inc., voids this warranty."

I was wondering about that too before I bought it. in effect, it's a service plan, not the regular defect/failure warranty.

the law is more 'your warranty cannot be voided by the use of 3rd party parts.' that's not what this is.

UPDATE 2/14/22

I ordered an Eaton 7.5HP 80 Gal. air compressor. This is the one here:

I love their silencer. sad they discontinued selling it as a stand-alone, I'd love to add one to our other compressor. it rattles your organs when it runes.

You can't sit on the pot forever. Sooner or later you've got to ****. In this case you made what in my opinion is absolutely the best choice for the money. Time to move on.
Thank you! I think I made a great decision after all the comments and information I have received.

If you have the time etc I'm sure you could fab a similar setup. It's not an overly complex setup. Maxcustody, linked a video showing an alternative but likely equally effective setup. In my own experience I'm surprised just how much good it does to hang some rubber hose off the inlets. My guess is the rubber helps absorb the pressure pulses as the air is pulled in. California Air Tools does this with their compressors. When I received my 5.5 gallon CAT I fired it up before bothering to install the filter (it was used so I wanted to check function). It worked but was noisier than I remembered. Then I put the filter housing on... well that helped. Then I followed the instructions and installed a dinky 4" bit of perhaps 1/4" ID fish aquarium looking tube. Yes, it made a really noticeable difference. If nothing else just try hanging say 3-4' of hose off each intake. I did 14" on my 120V compressor because I happened to have the 1/2" ID tubing around at the time. Not sure if longer would have helped or not.

Thanks, looking forward to getting it. I think it will be great for my needs and hopefully outlast me..................
Many quality USA used compressors will outlast many here.. I just upgraded my compressor from a Curtis 5 hp two stage I bought 22/23 years ago.. (home shop but used hard sometimes) The Curtis is going to my friends to finish out it's life, and my friends too..It's works like the day I picked it up using syn oil, and is a disk valve model. Picked up a real nice 7,5 champion with the Disk valve R-30D pump. Turns 575 RPM, and is quiet. It was setup in a auto shop with a twin on a alternator setup. Good maintenance, and low use. I have a RPC and it runs perfect on it (3 phase) $1200 is what I paid, and nothing sold now is close to the quality without spending at least $4000 plus..

I went to Pacific air, and picked up some syn. oil, and talked to the parts guy there. He was the one that put the bug in Champion's ear to put the 15 hp pumps with a 7.5 motor and make it a long lasting quiet unit. They sold hundreds of them the first month.. The ones on Ebay are not the high-end pump models with the disk valves/low oil setup, and centrifugal unloader..

I looked high, and low for the Eaton pump RPM.. (trade secret?)

Thanks,
I looked but could not spot the RPM it ran at.. It's nice to know the 175 psi /Pump RPM/Motor hp size used to get there. You can set up a good cross reference between units.

I would of not bought this Champion unless it had some real benefit over the USA built Curtis I had.. I can still run my 3 phase 60i cnc cutter with the 15 hp RPC using the champion. Thought it was going to be a no go, but zero issues. It should run a bit cooler when pushed.
The factory after cooler would be a nice upgrade on this one.. Here are some specs of the R-30d pump..
