Thanks for your input. I purchased the sharpener and was able to improve my pocket knives but I think I will follow you further by buying the gauge. I appreciate the tip.
I was thinking of buying another kit as a christmas gift and came across this image. I forgot phones have very decent built in gyros so it's possible to get an app to do the same job:

For keeping a knife sharp the easiest things I found was The Spyderco sharp maker

Not the best choice if you want to make it sharp and it's not sharp, or, I do need to establish the angle.

I have used it to reestablish angles but when I do that I buy other rods that are diamond or similar cuz the stones in comes with are pretty fine.
If I really needing to go to town, I'll use this

Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition Knife & Tool Sharpener Elite Mk2 - Adjustable Knife Sharpening System with Blade Grinding Attachment

That can handle most things . If you don't mind limiting your stuff you could get one of these

Work Sharp MK2 Professional Electric Knife and Tool Sharpener - Adjustable Tool and Knife Sharpening System

But I would would prefer the canned onion sharpener if I was going to get that MK2.

A few more 'knife sharpening kits' since I already did the leg work:

I really liked the design below (tool-less clamp) and better heim joint than the vevor. I decided against it because I don't think the single large clamp would work well with small knives. I also found the up/down mechanism a bit loose on these designs though this one appears to have some extra intentional slop to prevent that. It's also missing stops like the vevor:

The first one says 10 whetstones but the ad says/shows 6:

the one below is same design but appears to include more stones/leather strop. If you got prime the difference w/coupon is 6$ from above:

the one below is like the vevor but appears to have a better ball joint and adjustable jaw for smaller knives. The downside is the stones are not plastic/aluminum backed. This technically gives you two flat surfaces to use but I'm afraid makes them more delicate to handle. There's tons of upgrades to these and pricier options w/plastic or aluminum backed stones:

Lastly, I went w/this one despite the low rating because it's for small knives, can do 360 on the clamp, comes w/diamond stones, and the angle is fixed by a screw and rail system which means no loosening to deal with. It's very similar to a "lansky" system which is well rated, it also can clamp on a table, is compact, comes w/carry case, and is dead simple to put together. It'll be gifted after I give it a test drive:

Received one of these from Amazon yesterday. Not a pro level vise by any means but a cut above similarly priced sloppy garbage available under many names. Moveable jaw has no slop due to center guide rod and removable jaws decently finished. Bottom side is ground and parallel to jaw slides. Looks identical to the equivalent Wilton selling for ~$53. With 20% coupon Amazon has been running on and off it came to $31 delivered. Nice little vise for being a cheapie.

Must be a targeted 20% coupon, darn it!

Don't know if it's a targeted coupon, only that it would appear sometimes when I was checking back and forth on it when comparing it to other vises. Maybe being a Prime member helps, don't know.
I will tell you that it's a solid little vise (~8 lbs.) and it came finished in a nice blue color instead of the gray shown in the ad. Also came with an instruction leaflet and 2 Allen wrenches (one for the jaw screws and one for the grub screw that retains the threaded rod into the moveable jaw). After seeing what is out there being offered and what you get (or don't get) for your money, I'd pay the $ 36.44 and still be satisfied. The lowest price I've seen elsewhere was ~$63 and even up to~ $90 (obviously overpriced) at industrial suppliers. So, if you're interested, you might grab one and return it if not satisfied. A few minutes ago Amazon showed 5 in stock and you don't know if the price will increase when they get a new batch to sell.
P.S. I added a short M6 bolt and nut to lock down the grub screw which has a habit of backing out after running the jaw back and forth a bunch. Don't have any Loctite on hand.

Yet another small cheap drill press vice. Ratings look ok, I like the quick release.

B0CGX6C18D.png
In the past at different times I had 3 of that style (without the quick release) and they all had sloppy jaws and were not machined flat on the bottom side but powder coated/ painted like the rest of the vise. Many of these cheap vises are not machined flat on the bottom. Also no V-grooves in the jaws for holding circular objects. None of this may matter to you as we all have our own criteria. Just putting it out there.

those are missing the stabilizing rod like the Palmgren so a bit sloppier. IHHP & shars carries a Palmgren clone ranging from 35-45

I'm partial to this quick release design personally though it's a bit taller:
****The places that I saw the Shars vises, although at a good price, also wanted ~$18-$20 delivery.
****The quick release designs, although nice to have, were not as important to me as having 2 flat surfaces to support workpiece.

Gotcha, I had picked this one up in the past and is also a decent option if you can catch in a deal. Downside is being a milling vise it's slow to screw:

Although the set came w/2 diamond hones, I became a fan quick since they don't need water. I also suspect the corundum stones won't last. I found these three deals:

10 hones

9 hones plus manual holder thingy & discount:
1731681467936.png
edit: cancelled since grit is repeat
lastly I'm going w/this, 8 hones plus leather strop. The honeycomb/dimple design aids vs clogging:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CP3BH817?tag=atomicindus08-20

Settled on this instead, aluminum backed honeycomb plates w/a separate cheapo strop:

Bought this earlier today. The 1/2HP version was $115.00. Amazon's list price of $270.90 for the 3/4HP version is fantasy. The MSRP is $150. I am replacing a 20 year old 1/2HP In-Sink-Erator Badger 5.

I bought an open box 1/2 HP from them for $87 a couple weeks ago.
It arrived in brand new condition, just missing the rubber seal for the drain pipe, which I ended up re-using from my original 1/4 HP or whatever it was In-Sinkerator that lasted ~10 years.

I might have looked real hard at your 3/4 HP for that price.

Those air switch things are great! Installed one at our previous house, much better than the switch inside the sink cabinet. I also prefer it to the current solution, a switch on the wall by the sink. I hit that one sometimes instead of the light switch.

i know these tend to have a low longevity rate, but at this price if it gives me 2 hours of relief from cleaning small parts ill call it a win.
I have a larger version of this cleaner in my shop, it's been running well for ~3 years now. I wouldn't say it receives heavy usage but at least a few hours a week.
