today i picked up some steel plate which is the first step towards a metal fabrication bench i'm going to build.
DSC_1470.jpg
technically it'll be two benches.
approx. 1200x1400 ish... maybe a bit bigger, not 100% sure yet.
i'm going to make a D.I.Y version of a kind of fixture point table like this:
build pro 2000x2000.jpg
the idea of two benches is so that i can move them around a bit easier (they're gonna be heavy!), and also essentially adjust the size of the overall bench for different jobs...

i was actually already planning to get in touch...
i think i'll cut slots rather than holes.
all the steel needs to be cut to length too, i basically raided a company's offcuts pile.
i need to finalise my plan, then i'll know exactly what needs to be done!

Progress has been lacking lately.
I've been very busy at work, lots of overtime, which doesn't leave much spare time...

Today i sanded the first bit of (awful) flushing.
Then did the first coat, and tape joins i had missed last time, plus a second coat over the ones i'd sanded.
Not sure i've ever known a more efficient way of making a mess!
My skills are improving, i've gone from 'absolutely woeful' to 'average'...haha

DSC_1545.jpg
as you can see in the background, the rest of the shed is an absolute pig sty!
DSC_1546.jpg

I have been side-tracked by a little project for a friend.
He's fitting a toyota sc12 supercharger to a VW mk1 golf, just for a bit for fun really... so i offered to make some custom pipework for him.
This is something i really want to get into doing, but i need practice! he's guinea pig #1, and i have another friend lined up ready to be #2...
No welding yet, did some cutting and test fitting, a little bit of fettling required then i can tack it all together before another test fit, then if all is ok i can weld it up.
these pics are of one side, i've got a similar arrangement on the other side of the supercharger too.

Yes, the engine's been built for it, and I'll run water injection too.

a good friend just fitted an aquamist system to his trd supercharged v6 prado.
seems a very good quality kit! and noticeable difference right off the bat. goes for dyno tune in a few weeks... he's running a water/methanol mix.

So, progress is minimal....but small steps in good directions...

I have light in the room!
DSC_1606.jpg
I picked up some shelving, ex-masters, solid stuff and a bargain!
DSC_1605.jpg
DSC_1607.jpg
Also, picked up this weird gauge, apparently it came from a power station. i plan to fit the guts of a beetle speedo and use it in my volksrod eventually.

kai1980 its nice to have a bit of lighting in your shop given our days are so short..

Your shelving looks the goods too..

Your gauge is most certainly from a power station and it was used to synchronise the phase angles between generators..

little bit more progress today.
a friend came over to help, we tried to get the $50 drill working, no luck yet... but we did move it to where it'll probably live forever.
DSC_1609.jpg
I loaded up my new shelves with the **** that i've had spread across the floor for too long. it's amazing how much better a shed looks when you create some clean empty floor space! of course, it didn't stay clean for long...
DSC_1610.jpg
we got the mezzanine basically done, just need to put a few more screws in here or there and it's finished...

So, work has been a bit crazy, we're busy but we're not.... typical winter in the building industry, the weather throws everything out of sync.
i took today off, rather than trying to 'look busy' at work i decided to actually be busy at home!
making progress on the last wall of the shed that hasn't had insulation and gyprok yet.
IMG_2017-07-19_14-38-24.jpg

in the process i had an extra double power point added, you can never have too many power points!
DSC_1615.jpg

also, found a fire extinguisher in a box while tidying up, figured it might be a bit more useful mounted somewhere easy to access...
DSC_1612.jpg

i'm slowly getting there....

i put up the wrong pic of the 'feature wall'....haha
i grabbed these off-cuts of hardwood flooring a few years ago, i knew i'd use them for something eventually...
still have a fair few left, so i'll have to get creative somewhere else too.

A little more progress again.
I stuffed up a piece of gyprok so my timber 'feature wall' got a lot bigger...
I still need to decide what i'm going to do with the inside of the door.
DSC_1647.jpg

Also, made a start on a ladder for the mezzanine, it'll be made out of 50x25 aluminium (because i have plenty of it already).
DSC_1646.jpg
DSC_1645.jpg

I really need to build my fabrication bench! it'll make life so much easier than the way i'm doing things now!!

managed a couple of hours in the shed today.
i was meant to be sanding on my gyprok but couldn't find my dust mask after the big 'tidy up' a few weeks ago...
so... i finished off the inside of the shed door instead!
DSC_1658.jpg
those three pieces of floor board leaning up next to the door are all that's left of what i had, seems i'd scavenged just enough for this! if only i could say i planned it that way...haha

made a 'new' door handle...
DSC_1657.jpg
and, just because it's been a while, here's a pic of how the room is looking right now.

Been a while between updates.
Progress has been slow.

I did finish off the supercharger pipes for my friends car, they're far from perfect but i was very happy for a first attempt!
_20170910_174632.jpg
I've been slowly chipping away at the flushing on my room, bit by bit it's getting there.
DSC_1811.jpg
DSC_1812.jpg

Had some help form the boss which is always good!
DSC_1767.jpg

My ute had been playing up a bit, i'm now totally broke because it took a bit of work to get it sorted, couple of replacement parts and a full clean out of the inlet manifold! the EGR has now been stopped from causing this much mess again...

so, some better updates should be coming in the next week or two. i've got some time off work and i'm planning to spend most of it in the shed!

I picked up some heavy wall steel to make some workbenches:
DSC_1866.jpg
and picked up a timber top for one of them, this bench will have vice, grinder, sander and small drill press (and whatever else ive forgotten about) mounted to it.
DSC_1920.jpg
in the mean time i have had a little bit of fun playing around making custom hotwheels cars... it's proving to be a fun little hobby, i can make good progress without having to invest too much time or any real money...

i bought a dremmel (which has now gone back to dremmel because it sh*t itself after about an hour of use), and i use a two part metal putty to stick bits back together again...
it's all very fiddly because everything is so small... i'd be a rubbish jeweler! but so far it's been pretty good fun.
here's another one, from start to finish took about an hour...

i was really surprised to have an issue with it, they're a fairly reputable brand...
hopefully they'll get it fixed/replaced quickly, but at this time of year i'm not gonna hold my breath!

Yesterday I made a bit if a start on the first bench.
This will have the timber top on it and will have vice, grinder, sander, small pedestal drill (and whatever else I can find) mounted to it.
First real go welding mild steel with the tig, found it quite easy so far, even bridging over a 3-4mm gap was fairly simple.

The family are out of town for a few days, it's just me and my shed!
Step one today was a clean up! Filled the trailer in no time flat...
_20171226_173921.jpg
Once that was done I could get on with the important business of bench building (and listening to the cricket)
_20171226_173901.jpg
Found some wheels so figured I'd give them a go, not sure if they'll stay...
_20171226_173838.jpg
And in place where it belongs, working out the best positioning for everything on it now, then once I'm happy I'll bolt it all down!
_20171226_173816.jpg
Probably gonna head back in this evening when it's cooled down a bit, try and get some more done...

I've drawn up lots of different mud maps for my metal fabrication table(s)...
I think this is the final design I'll be building.
It'll actually be two identical tables, allowing me to move them around separately if needed, rather than one massive table in the way all the time.

Thanks mate, I reckon my welding is slowly improving. Definitely getting plenty of practice at the moment!

Good day so far today.
Got the frame done for the first metal fab table.
Got creative with the wheels, used some m16 nuts and bolts, gives me around 10-15mm of adjustment.

Stopped for some dinner, probably gonna try and finish this table off this evening!
Fair bit of cutting to do, all with a 5 inch grinder...

Thanks 1/2 cup.
Last few pics for today.
Made some risers out of 65x10 flat bar.
Tacked them all in place, and then threw on one of the top plates just to see how it's going to look. Top plates are 300x10. There'll be a 60mm gap between each plate.
Still got to cut them down to size and prep them... Enough angle grinding for one day though, the neighbours must love me!

Was enjoying looking at your progress right up to the point you mention the cricket

Although typical when there's nothing but pride to play for, we have a good day..
