I need some more lighting towards the front of the garage above the workbench and toolboxes, I have been considering going with some led flood lights over the standard shop lights. Has anyone else used them in this application?

I replaced my incandescent bulbs with the LED equivalent. I used the 60 watt equivalent bulbs in natural daylight (for brighter light), and I love the difference it made! I leave them on 24/7, as they don't get hot like regular bulbs. They work fine out in the cold garage.

I've got some like Pete posted for my flag pole. Mine is a 10 watt and it's amazingly bright. $20 from amazon light is by ledwholesalers.

I'm interested in these also, but for the outside. I read on here they don't attract insects, but no specific models where mentioned. I like the sound of $20.

Look at Pete's avatar.... no look at the light, look at Pete's avatar.....

I'm using adjustable Halogen Spots for task lighting on the work bench and a couple of machines. 4" Adjustable Gimbal Recessed fixtures were $140 for a 10 pack

Not the most efficient but the color spectrum accents well against the back ground of fluorescent lighting

I realize you guys are using these indoors, but I'm looking for a similar solution for outdoors. Previous owner installed a 500 watt halogen lamp and it works for part of the patio, and 1/3 of the back yard, and half of two neighbors back yards... He was also kind enough to install at the roof's peak, a street light type sodium vapor light. And for some reason, its wired into the upstairs bedroom... Anyway, since the halogen doesn't cover all the patio (22'x42') I was looking to install a couple different fixtures as well as replace that halogen. How many of those LED floods would it take to cover the back patio area effectively for entertaining?

My LED flood light that I have outside lights up a lot. Although it's pointed straight up, it lights up the entire side of my house and the tops of trees that are 40-50 feet away. It's a 10W but I would guess a couple 30W or larger would light it up pretty good. The 30 watt is a 150 watt replacement, not sure on the 70 or 100W

Thanks for the link, 3 or 4 10 watt units aimed appropriately ought to do the trick for me then. Thanks!

I have one of the 30 watt ones that look identical to the one at the top of the thread. Got it on Amazon for about $25.00. Really bought it to test with - at my graphics shop we have 3 sodium lights around the property owned by the power company who charges us $20 each per month for. I ultimately plan on installing a few of the LED floods and having the power company come and remove theirs and quit charging me for them. The 30w I have - not as bright as the big sodium lights but it's pretty close. Mounted up high under the eaves about 18 feet up it does light up a pretty big area but not super bright.

Also mine had odd wire colors - the label on the back I made after I opened it to verify what the connections were. Brown - hot, blue - neutral, yellow - ground. The DC transformer inside also indicated that it can take anywhere from 85 to 265 vac input.

My incandescent BR30 blew out over the kitchen sink and I bought this as a replacement. $12.97 at Home Depot.

Sorry for the delay, but I just installed this today. My initial impression is good.

At 2700K and 650 lumens, the light output and color are about the same as the 65w incandescent flood that it replaced. I have this installed over my kitchen sink and the light quality is great. It doesn't dim as nice as an incandescent but its not bad either. At the halfway mark on the dimmer switch it's completely off, where as the incandescent bulb would dim to barely an ember. I have a few high end flashlights using Cree's LEDs and have been impressed with them.

I had this fixture put up on the garage end of my house, there are three overhead doors and a man door, pavement ends about 60 feet out. This fixture does a great job of lighting it up, the electrician who installed it for me bought two and installed them on his house after seeing it.

I stumbled upon these for $9.97 today. They are the same price on the website as well http://www.homedepot.com/p/Cree-65W...ht-Bulb-BBR30-06527FLF-12DE26-1U100/204366182

I grabbed 10 of them and replaced all the lights in my kitchen. I'm eager to see what they look like in the dark but when I put them in and had them side by side with the incandescent they looked to have the same color and light output when on full. As I dim them they turn more white than the incandescent. When I replaced 9 lights on a single dimmer the room didn't dim as much as the incandescent but certainly enough for my needs.

Do they work outside OK? Below zero weather?

The packaging says they work to -13F.

I had 24 100w incandescents in my garage and have been replacing them with 17w LED floods from Costco. They have a limit of 12 at this price, so I swapped half already and have another dozen from a separate purchase waiting to go in. Not sure if this price is available everywhere, our local power company subsidized LED and CF lights at our Costco and Sams Clubs. So far I am loving them, all the light points down so it's not waisted lighting up the ceiling.

I figure I can light the entire garage better with the electric usage of 4 of my old bulbs.

I click on that link and get a price of $20 each with a purchase limit of 10. I need 8 for my kitchen but at that price I think I'll just stand around and wait for the CFLs to warm up. :wtf:

I just checked it again and I still get the $9.97 price. I guess it must be a local thing. You could change your store to Shakopee, MN 55379 but I don't see any "ship to home" so unless you are nearby I guess it won't help you.

I guess they figure if Californians will pay the highest price in the country for gas they can easily gouge us on light bulbs. Hard to imagine they could double the price though. Sheesh.

Pete, What height do you have the LED's in your shop? How far apart did you place them? Just completed my 45 x 45 x 16 and now I need to install lights.

my lights are 12 feet from the floor, on the long walls, first one at 8 feet, second at 24 (middle ) and the 3rd is 8feet from back wall. I had the halogens in the exact same locations. I have the lights angled down approx. 45 degrees. I have no overhead lights, the light from each side is enough for me, but the shop is only 24 wide. I'll try to get my daughter to take a pic or 2 or 3 and post in a day or so.

Pete, Do you think these would work as overhead (placed between 16 - 20 feet high)? Thanks.

I think they would, BUT, how many ? I feel the "beam" doesn't "spread" quite as wide as say, the halogen I had previously. your talking 40 x 45 ? I'd go with 12 of the 50 watt 3 on the 40 at say 8,12,12 and 8 and then maybe 10,12,12,10 ? if you follow my "grid" ? 9 would probably work, but I like lots of light !! got a buddy that put some "craiglist" used some kind of halide or mercury I don't know what lights up, even when they are on it's like a cave !!

Building is 45x45x16. Has two overhead doors on one wall and three 36x36 windows on opposite wall. I was thinking 9 lights (three rows of three), with one from each side around 10' from side and one in middle @ 22. I'll also probably have some task lighting by the bench and a portable light on stand.
Looks like it might get pricey but T8's will also be expensive. :headscrat
