Shorty, I believe you are referring to the resilient channel studs that the drywall is attached to correct? If so, yes all walls use the same. In addition, we will be using the same for the walls in the shop also. The structure is all engineered to support not only itself but in addition be able to support the hat channel and 5/8” drywall throughout.

As for the metal studs used for the interior walls when framing in the bathrooms, bedrooms and closets we are using the Clark Dietrich 2X6 metal studs that are all a minimum of 14’ in length as to reach the ceilings throughout the home.

I’ve never heard of resilient channel studs. In earlier pictures, I thought the exterior walls were standard metal studs. Reading about these new studs I saw where they install perpendicular to frame so went back and saw they are mounted to the girts. Learned something new, thanks.

Shorty, the main structure is all made up of the beams, girts and purlins. As you know, t3his is the so called bones of the build.
The exterior skin is 20 gauge and thick enough to support itself across 4’ spans so no additional studs are needed as seen in the pic below.
0A271897-A694-4001-BA35-49EBCC6AFB97.jpeg

As for the interior, the drywall has no structural integrity so it needs to have a method to not only attach to the structure but to also add strength to itself with its own support (bones) at 16” on center.

The resilient channel is slightly thinner than a normal hat channel and is made to reduce the transition of sound through oval holes within the channel. Typically this is used on the interior of a wood framed build or over an existing wall such as a basement for ease of attaching drywall and to reduce noise. My Engineers put these into the plans although I likely would have gone with a thicker hat and not worry as much about noise transition as we are well away from any highways or external noise sources. In addition, we are using 5/8” drywall throughout the build so will help in the wall stiffness.

20 gauge metal studs going up for half bath, guest bath, master closet and bathroom. 14’ high ceilings so a huge look when standing within each.

A bit of a challenge with the half bath that goes from 14’ down to 4’ as to fit under the stairway above so trying to figure out the details of meeting code yet accomplishing the overall goal.

Thought I could get all of it done in a week and now I’m more like two and a half weeks into framing it.

The complete project now has an official statement to it- “Think of the very very, very longest time something could ever take to complete then double it and you should be in the ballpark”

In warbird resto the standard practice is come up with a budget & a timeframe.. then double one & triple the other.

Finally getting some drywall hung. Slow going as these guys are busy working multiple jobs and only two guys at a time on my build.

Feels like I doubled the weight of the building just in piping, electrical wire, cat 6 cable and coax! Finally get to hide it so I don’t have to look at it anymore.

Yes Toolfool, both showers have green board. Would not pass code inspection without. Not required elsewhere in the bathroom such as around the toilet and sink areas for some reason.
I meant that green board should not be used. Go with Hardi, Denshield or one of the many WATERPROOF options. I have torn out way too many showers where the green board has wicked up water from a small leak and turned to mush.

For one reason or another Green board here is required no matter what you use on top of it. We will be using Hardie cement backer board on top of green board, then the adhesive/tile will adhere to it for a total of 1-1/4”. This is how we set the depth for shower and bath fixtures.
When I see people adhering tile directly to green board I alway cringe and think of the weight of the tile peeling the paper off the drywall and walking into a pile of tile laying in the shower pan.

Some drywall progress last week from the boys along with me spending the weekend starting the 5 ton HVAC and ducting install.

The platform is welded to the main 2nd story beam but still wants to slightly twist the beam with the weight of the unit. Installed a temporary strap for the heck of it and will install two 1/4” cables with turnbuckles from the platform to the upper roof beams for insurance over time.

As for the ducting, it will get another 20’ leg coming off of It supplying air above the entry area. The very end of the 14” supply will also get one more register feeding air out and above the fan area. Once complete, and I get my lift back from the drywaller’s, I can then install the floor trusses and flooring along with the ducting below.

Bought the rights from the photographer and had an 8’X12’ mural made in black n white of a 1911 Baldwin 2-8-2 locomotive. Pic was taken in Tennessee and is called “Roaring out of the tunnel”.

Fits the style of the Industrial build perfectly and will get some sort of rustic frame with big rivets around it (same spacing and size as on the front of the train). All in my spare time!o_O

As the saying goes it was Steel, Oil & Railroads that built this country- not Apple, Google and Tesla!

With the Xmas tree!

We had about 75 people attend our annual xmas cocktail party and don’t think a single one of them did not comment on how much they loved the mural.

Fun watching people walk through the front door and gravitate toward the mural in awe!

Turned out awesome and matches the build perfectly!5D08DC45-97AE-4D17-AF62-9110AC3D3A21.jpeg

Massive set of stairs going in. Bought the wood locally from a guy for cheap that came from some sort of burnt down mill in Oregon. Railroad washers and square head bolts to add to the rustic look yet will have stainless cabling for the railing for a modern contrast. Biggest issue I am having is to modify the beam above to get the clearance to code at 6’-8”.

Also had to get a 86” TV hung as to be sure not to miss any of the 49er games!

I'm so glad to see this moving again. One of my favorite builds and was sad to see it stall out there for a while.

I love the staircase and it really does fit in with the vibe of the building. I will say that the straight beam that cuts across the end of vaulted ceiling transition over the stairs feel awkward. I wish it was 2-3 ft higher (completely over drywall), or not there at all, though I'm guessing there is a structural reason that it is where it is.

Sam, great minds think alike as the straight beam is being lifted above the drywall peak today to gain the headroom I need. In addition the the other slanted beam will be modified upward and re-welded with the approval of my Engineer. Once the final inspection is complete I will then determine if the stairs get pushed back into their original position against the wall or not.

Fire sprinklers now complete along with gas line and about 90% of the HVAC system. Looking forward to some heat soon to counteract these 29 degree mornings.

Glad to hear! That's going to look great.

Out of curiosity, has there been any progress on the garage side of that big wall? I'm guessing its construction storage/staging for the time being, but wasn't sure if you had organized any functional shop space yet.

Sam, the shop area for sure is my construction staging area. Constantly having to move stuff around and even more satisfying is installing components as to make room for both work and more material it seems. Outside of insulating the complete shop in spray foam along with throwing in a bunch of batt insulation, hat channel studs, gas lines, electrical, Laundry cabinetry, Instant water heater install and HVAC unit I have been concentrating on the home instead.

The better half is insisting on finishing a house to live in and not to worry about where my toys are stored. WOMEN, GO FIGURE!

Love the build, and location. My cousin is a winemaker in Paso and I went to school in SLO, would love to end up on the central coast one day. It's nice you're spot is so close to downtown without feeling like it.

Go niners!

My Brother is in Tempelton and a Wine seller for one of the big wineries.

Love the area and enjoy the changing of the seasons Beautiful Country in that area & Really Nice People !

I really like your decor - The rustic look and feel are very warm and confortable.

You are a Very Lucky man! Not sure my wife would go for that style of Home.

Although in Lake Havasu we have a 1400 sf casa and a detached 2,000 sf garage
so a 100 % maybe !

lol

Cheers !

Merry Christmas 🎄

Merry Xmas to all.
We got the final to move into the home in September of this year after a few years of building, working and traveling.

Been a fun project with many more projects to go such as additional guest room, guest house, pool and outdoor kitchen.

Pic of what we woke up to on Christmas morning overlooking all of Paso Robles and Daou vineyards attached (Daou by the way just sold for one Billion Dollars) along with the micro cement master shower, stairway, railing, Post Xmas party barnwood kitchen and others.

Many other pics to be added when I find some time to crack a bottle of Daou open and go through my photos!🍷

Thanks, Wellness check canceled. :)

When you get time, tell us more about those upper support arms holding the shower glass. Please. How are they attached to the wall? What are they made of?
In the photo they look like either wood or stone designed to look like wood.

Thx for the comments!

If we can get through New Years and a trip to Austin next week I will come back and finish a couple rat killing items on the cabinets in the kitchen / baths.

From there, move on to the guest bedroom in the main house and the separate guest house below on the property. In addition, we already have three 50amp full service RV spots for guest to camp with their own rigs.
.
With a Xmas party this year of close to 100 people we quickly realize that space for friends and family to stay may be priority.

FartyMarty, the wood used for the glass supports in the shower came with the delivery of the building separating the metal beams. A couple of them warped into the shape you see whereas I clamp them together as to keep them for a future project. Once I installed the glass I knew I was going to have support it in some way that would look like it belonged there. I attached it to the wall using hidden lags that go into the metal studs. On the glass side I notched the wood as to slip over the glass and is held in place with construction adhesive.

Tons of comments from everyone who sees the shower as they are stand out pieces that fit the look of the house.4352CD99-CF56-4F81-90E9-7F7705D3D547.jpegD42098AB-27FF-4A1E-BDF0-3BFC274C785E.jpeg2F0772D3-A05B-4C08-97EE-B3C7CC6ABCCB.jpeg

Big Al, the kitchen itself is approx 18’X14’ and the island is a little over 6’X 8’. We quickly found out that the island is where everyone hangs out during the parties as it is where everyone drops off all the appetizers and alcohol!

In addition, the 6’X4” window is a awning style window that flips up seating an additional 4 bar stools. The house has been designed for entertaining and up to now has worked out well for that purpose.

Hopefully finish up the cabinet faces here in the next couple days. We tore off the back end of a barn prior to selling the property with the intent of using for the new kitchen. Best move ever as it fits the look of the home.

Everything is under counter including the refrigerators, freezers and microwave with no above head cabinetry for a very different and clean look. Just outside in the shop area is where a full sized Z-line refrigerator along with a full pantry for things that are not used every day will be stored.
