Just making a list and checking it twice.

Can't bake a cake without the right tools and ingredients.

Plus I'm retired. And a little OCD.

Bill

Hello, Bill,

That list seems more than a little OCD, but then, it never hurts to do some evaluation of potential needs, and evaluation of potential cost-effectiveness of suitably equipping oneself to meet those needs. (quite a few of your list items may not be very cost-effective for the generality of private maintenence shops)

There is something to be said for some level of OCD in automotive work, that of being meticulous and exacting in the work one does. (how many stories have we heard of vehicles coasting to a stop at an exceedingly inconvenient time or location due to this or that petty mistake done by a careless or hurried mechanic?)

I'll just offer a couple of minor ideas, if I may.......you've listed wire crimpers, but not a medium size electric soldering iron and some 60-40 rosin core solder....remember, crimping a terminal to a wire is meant to hold the terminal in place for soldering. A crimped, but not soldered, terminal has the potential to loosen or corrode, after some time in service, and become a tricky nuisance to diagnose when a vehicle malfunctions due to intermittent low voltage on a component. (you needn't ask how I know this.....its rather obvious, actually)

Another item to consider, should you equip yourself to pull/replace engines, is that many of the common 'cherry picker' type of hydraulic light cranes sold these days are of dangerously sub-standard construction. Should you consider investing in that capability, consider the higher price for a best quality American-made unit to be a necessary investment in work safety. (I have seen, first-hand, what happens when a poorly-done weld fails under load, and its not nice, to put it mildly).

Beware the common versions of 'engine tilt' devices, poorly made in the Orient, and find an authentic 'Owatonna Load-Rotor', or equivalent in a reliable American make. (a good friend of mine very nearly lost a hand, when a 'brand X' load tilt rig failed, and dropped an engine.)

As a generality, the 'Harbour Freight' class of suppliers, with their horrid cheap Oriental widgetry, are not your friends. They make cheap Oriental tooling to 'look pretty', to be sure, but an injury accident when cheap tooling fails in use is a very real potential to be considered.

cheers

The HF picker is very well designed, I saw one recently where the welding was flawless and the OTC one not to far away looked terrible.
Pepboys and others had a 1 ton picker for a while that was bad, poorly designed and too light a boom tube.

I tried Harbor Freight for some speciality tools. I think the axle nut sokets are great for non professional use. The ball joint press, pullers, etc are pretty crappy. You can get OTC or Astro on Amazon for just a little bit more and they are much better. I ordered the Lisle master inner tie rod tools today from Tool Discounter. $75

I too am slowly building my own little shop. I will be 40 next year but it will probably be 2-3 more years before I get my 2 post lift.

I just got my first set of Knipex dykes last week. I am looking forward to seeing what the fuss is all about the next time I attack a cotter pin.

I had to make some valuations and judgement calls.

Many people suggested renting things like the ball joint press from the local auto parts store. Then I heard stories about how they are abused and I didn't want the liability. Plus I will be doing more than 4, plus control arm bushings on at least 2 vehicles, maybe more.

The cost of the SO press is outrageous, even though it is far and away the best. There is a USA version of the press that is similar to all the other Asian ones, but that one and the others are still a bit more than the HF one.

I have heard some bad reviews of the HF press, but I attribute that to mostly operator error.

So for $120, I got the press kit AND the add on kit from HF.

And of course, this is NOT for a shop. Just my own use on my own cars, not even for family.

Bill

EDIT: 2 post lift? I can not deny checking CL for one of those.......

I have a small set of spiral screw extractors.
Bill

I haven't had much luck with the spiral easy outs. The straight ones are more effective in my experience. The spirals did come in handy for a broken spark plug in an old push mower though.

Carla,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have an engine hoist, bought used, unknown make.

I also have a couple of Weller soldering guns and a bunch of ends for same.

My list needs some tweaking, as I find more tools, while organizing my little one car garage.

This is getting into a subject that may be beyond scoper of the thread, but solder vs crimp is a bit of contested topic. GOOD crimpers maybe a subject relevant to OP however.

Crimped Terminations

Crimping is an efficient and highly reliable method to assemble and terminate conductors, and typically provides a stronger, more reliable termination method than that achieved by soldering.

Crimp terminations are available in different styles, depending upon the design application and connectivity requirements.

This section details the generic accept/reject criteria of commonly used crimp termination styles. See 2.02 - 2.10 for specific accept/reject criteria applicable to individual crimp styles.

Not OT at all.

First step is acquiring needed tool.

Second step is learning how to use it properly.

These are both critical for a DIY. I don't have years of experience in the field to use. Just this forum and YouTube.

This exercise has got me thinking about how to arrange my garage/shop.

I wanted it to be entirely a metal shop. But being a small single car garage, it serves the driveway. And the driveway as a work space beats working in the street. So I must have some automotive tools in there. So room for the 44" HF roller and 5 drawer red service cart must be made. The roller can be tucked under a bench top, but the service cart needs to be near the door.

A number of things must leave, to provide the space needed. This includes the blast cabinet, non working compressor, camelback drill press, bar folder and second parts washer. Plus I just today removed 2 of the 3 kitchen cabinets that were stored there.

Will do, as soon as the weather gets a little better! I work outside.

Have used some of it for rear drum brakes on 2 Astro Vans, front brakes and hubs and bearings, brake lines and cylinders, shocks and installing a hitch, but didn't take photos.

Bill

For drum brakes, some of the specialty tools are useful, and not too expensive. A brake spring tool works better than a pair of pliers. For the rears, a star wheel tool works better than a screwdriver. On the star wheel tool, look for good, square edges on the business end. This is one where finding a good used one is better than some of the shiny new junk where the edges are round, making the tool useless.

Yes!

I spent many hours with a screwdriver and pliers, until way after dark. Can't tell you how frustrating it was. Almost gave up.

Today's HF haul of things to check off the list.

Some wobble and swivel impact things to help give me options.

And some free things (Blue tarp not shown).

I'm still using the HF impact sockets daily at work. Never broke one and hurts a lot less if I lose one. The Snap On set sits at home collecting dust.

I recommend buying some premium impact driver bits. I have the Matco ones because they warranty it for me. The HF ones breaks easily and also damage the screws you're trying to take off.

Apex is another good brand to buy but I don't think they warranty. Similar quality to Matco tho.

I work on a lot of stuff, havnt needed an oil sender or sensor socket I can recall, save your money and buy it if you actually need one. Even a real shop uses some of this on occasion, the diy never.

I had one forever and had no idea what it was, until one day I had an oil leak on a Toyota in a blind spot, figured out what it was and was feeling it and was like "wow that feels like it would fit that crazy socket.."

Sure enough, the crazy socket fit the crazy feeling round thing..

As I work to assemble my tools and furthermore, to list them, it becomes very apparent to me, that even when you leave out rebuilding engines and transmissions, that it takes a large variety and quantity of tools to work on even your own vehicles.

I do note that I have some multiples that aren't necessary, but that still doesn't negate the fact that you need a large variety of tools.

You could use my list as a shopping list to set up a personal garage shop.

Already have a couple of breaker bars. A short and a long would do, but strong enough, and with ends that let you get to where you need to.

Also picked up a few silverware trays at the resale today. They should work well for organizing wrenches and such. Got the idea here on GJ. They had a half off day so 40 cents to 90 cents ea.

Photos later.

This is a good thread. Sberry, Signcrafter and Adam.C are all right.

Not everything on the list is something I need. Like the 4WD spindle nut sockets or the cordless impact.

I need to find a balance.

One funny thing, is while my wife sometimes gripes about more tools, she is now pushing me to do more work on the vehicles. She even wants me to do rear end and trans work now, to save and keep her favorite vehicles.

So keep the suggestions coming. Like the plastic pry tools (I already have).

Bill

I have both cordless and air impact wrenches here. They're both useful, just different. The cordless is good when I just need something quick and don't want to wait for the compressor to fill up. The air impact is good when I'm using it in the garage over the course of a day. Cordless is *great* for a run to the local junkyard. I was able to grab a set of front seats one day, over my lunch break from work, including time to drive there and back, with the cordless impact to zip the attaching bolts out.

Use a regular combination wrench to break them free then use a ratcheting wrench for convenience. Takes 2 seconds to grab two wrenches and another 2 seconds to switch wrenches. Ratcheting wrenches make a huge difference when working in tight spaces. Get a good set and treat them right.

I agree with others...make sure you have the basics then expand from there whether it is a tool needed for the next job or a tool to make your work easier.
Happy tool shopping.

Agreed. Don't think of the gearwrench box/open combo wrench as a poor combo wrench, think of it as a really low profile ratchet. I have a small set of gearwrench combos, and they don't get a lot of use, but where they shine is in low clearance areas where a ratchet won't fit and a regular box end is tedious.

Thank you for your suggestions. I'm picking up real MAPP gas on CL.

The kind of worklight I'm looking for is a 120V 1,500 or 2,000 lumen LED that has a small stand. It will light a large area. Like this:
b37e460b-fc36-4eaa-8a67-ee92b42066f9_1.aa8831bc790d2ee6d6504ad6d98ed010.jpeg

Bill

Nice looking light, but it looks too big to be useful in automotive work unless you have a lift. I've never found that I had too many lights of various types and shapes, mostly for the ability to stick or wedge them somewhere that I needed lit, but I don't think I'd use that one much.

I have the cordless version of this one:

https://www.farmandfleet.com/products/970849-designers-edge-26-watt-handheld-task-light.html

that I've found to be reasonably useful in, around, and under the cars. It's bright enough to light up whatever I'm working on, and can be put where I need the light to be. It hasn't replaced my corded drop light, because the convenience of just pulling it down and using it still wins out, but it's close.

I've got a couple of corded fluorescent lights like the one you linked. We use them for camping. Also have a couple Craftsman LED sticks I need to find the chargers for. Also a Coast head lamp.

Can't have too many light choices.

Long pattern combo wrenches and the thread restore kit would top the next on list if it were me. Just sayin. The last thing you want is to bust a caliper bolt off a steering knuckle because the tapped holes were dirty and corroded.

@Bill,
you are buying HF tools like there is no tomorrow. Trust you will have a long healthy and productive retirement period. Those HF should have a great resale value if you ever get tired of fixing your cars. 50% loss on HF tools is better than 50% loss on SO or Mac or Matco. Buying tools is cheaper than gambling since not all will be lost.

I'm quite happy with the lot as it comes together.

When I die, it all goes to oldest step son. So probably limited use for a limited time.

I'm documenting it here, as an exercise in what a necessary home kit would be.

It will evolve over time.

I started out with GearWrench at Advance Auto and Sears, Then Kobalt at Lowes and finally Harbor Freight for the rest. Plus a mix of garage sales and CraigsList.

Already have the long pattern combos in metric.

Will get SAE.

Thread restore is on the want list.

You are well beyond 'home kit' and into Indy shop mechanic range.

But nothing wrong in that. Keep on this and the big roller cab may be required.
