Google "homemade powered bead roller" you'll find more takes on this you can imagine. Some are good; some not so much. You get to choose.

Here's my Woodward that I modified to power roller. I got less than $350 in the whole thing. It was not completely done in pics. Any questions ask away.

YouTube, search for courtjester beadroller.

He has a slick variable control foot petal that is real simple.

To Garagetime,

What are the motor horsepower and operating speed and then do you know gearbox ratio? Was the motor and g-box a dumpster dive special? I like it....

Motor is a Dayton gear motor pic of tag. The bead roller at my work is 4 rpm. I think is a little fast for my taste. So I went with 2.8 rpm and also has more torque than the 4 rpm motor. Both motors are same type just different specs. They can be had in left or right hand angles. I wired
A switch box to motor with a switch to do forward and reverse and wired a cord on. I bought a sewing machine/ jewelry drill speed control peddle. Just plug bead roller into peddle then into
Wall. Everything I got was from eBay except the steel I used. I have just under $350 in the whole thing. It will put a bead in 16 gauge steel. If I ever felt the need to roll that heavy of gauge steel. I will take some pics of finished roller this weekend.

Nice Garagetime! I see some guys using the HF dc hoist motors to power them too.

I have the same Dayton motor on my roller, I used to have the "foot throttle" but it became inconsistent when running large and odd shaped panels if I had to shift standing position. I ended up putting a rotating dimmer switch on it and now just set max speed and hit the pedal.

PS the dimmer switch went on in 97 and the motor is still fine.

My humble version of a power beadroller...
Everything was free, except the VFD.
Motor is 65W, 3 phase 230VAC (maybe as old as me !!)
There are pedals to go forward or reverse, but the speed is set on the potentiometer of the electrical cabinet. The VFD is set to accelerate the motor to set speed in about 2s (helps starting the bead)
Enjoy, and feel free to ask any info...

The coupler is a Lovejoy coupler. Same as used on wood splitter's. They come in all different shaft sizes including metric. You can buy most sizes at Tractor Supply or eBay.

I used a small winch motor. 12v power supply and variable speed off eBay.
The winch free speed is about 20 rpm. With a chain and sprocket it runs from 3 to 12 rpm which I find comfortable.
The foot control is for off and on only. Reverse and variable speed is mounted on the machine. I don't feel I need a variable speed foot control although I originally had plans to make one.

If any complaints the straight cut gears in the winch are noisy.

Powering cost about 120.

I saw one someplace on the web that used a variable speed drill motor with a car starter drive gear turning an auto trans flexplate. Conneted up a foot pedal to the drill trigger with a cable. I want to try this method.
