*** I'm sorting out MY "collection" and I am finding all kinds of oddballs in the mix. Just wanting to figure out what some stuff is, and whether or not it needs to be re-homed here among the membership or gotten rid of by other means. **

Firestone?
Indestro?
Craftsman?

what did I get this for? :headscrat

cherry shape... no idea what brand belongs in this color wrinkle finish box.... ! Don ... ?

thanks. it's got a nice finish on it all around. not "matte" at all. definitely 1/4" drive. no wear pattern inside. :headscrat

I know there's two Firestone sets here.. one of them has a wonky ratchet... not sure if I'm missing a box on those or not.

I dragged a couple boxes out and was sorting things out and came across that.

I'm going to need some more boxes.

Is this something special? Somebody out there looking for one of these?

Snap-on M-8 marked "Made in U.S.A." 9/32" drive 1/4" 6-point socket - date code G (1945?)

^ I thought it looked familiar. Don just snagged a Philadelphia set.

Moving right along here, these came out of the bottom of a box. By coincidence, my S-K "Carb-O-Mang" set was in the same box, and these two certainly look like mates to the "Carb-O-Mang" other than the darkening of the finish and the chrome peeling on the 5/16" 8-point.
What say you? (examples of my "Carb-O-Mang" also posted for comparison.)

More later. I've gotten through four boxes so far. WooHOO! ;)

^ after I posted those two sockets above it occurred to me that those might have come from Don - I am still in need of a "Carb-O-Mang" socket to replace one that is cracked in a set....
.... bear with me here guys - I'm finding some strange odds and ends in the bottoms of boxes and in some of the sets I'm opening up.

How do you crack a socket that small? I can’t imagine what would be that hard on the socket, so my next inclination is to discount the socket quality.

In my very young years, I worked with a guy who use to put Snap-on sockets in a vise and break them to get them warrantied. He didn’t like them looking used. He was a polisher. My tools were safe from him!

^ it was cracked by a previous owner - I have no clue. :headscrat

I just dug that "Carb-O-Mang" set out, and it's the 3/8" socket I'm still short. After looking at them side by side, I think these came from Oakland. Memory fails here.

Yep, that’s a Philadelphia extension, as Lugz says. I have one in my partial set.

i have a few slightly less cracked Carb-O-Mang sockets set aside for you. Unfortunately no 3/8” 8 point. They will go out in the next Indestro care package.

^ it's not the 8-point I need... it's either a 6-point or 12-point I need to fix that set.

so.... I have an S-K "Carb-O-Mang", "Fulton", or "Brazil" 5/16" 8-point and a 7/16" 12-point that are extra.

I'll put that extension in your box. I thought it looked familiar - especially after that set coming up a couple weeks back.

thanks. BK

My Brazil sets are newer than that one and the sockets are all marked “Chrome Alloy”. Your set is from the earlier ‘30s and it seems likely that the steel alloy used back then was inferior leading to your experience with cracked sockets.

Don - I pulled out this little Indestro "Super Quality" "Chrome Vanadium" set and it's got a Duro-Chrome extension in it. My question is: when did Duro-Chrome use that knurled band pattern, and is this unit age-appropriate for the WWII vintage Duro-Chrome "D - I" set that I have which is missing the extension?

The mysterious sliding "T" handle is a puzzler. No marks, no bands, no knurling. Grooves machined at various intervals along the length of the shaft. There's a detent ball IN the "T" part which "latches" at each groove. Both ends of shaft are stamped to prevent the "T" part from coming off.

unknown 1.4 dr 3-in extension.jpgDoes this 1/4" drive 3-inch extension look at all familiar? It's NOT Oxwall, G.M., or Meteor. Cheezie cad-like finish (maybe Zinc?) No markings.

No markings on either of these 1/2" hex drive units:

unknown 1.2 hex drive adapter u-joint.jpg

No markings at all on any of these four pieces. The connector piece definitely looks like Stevens-Walden, and the finish on it is a dead-on match to another SW set I have here, but the extensions not being marked are puzzling. My Indestro 3204 male-to-male extension is clearly marked with manufacturer's name and part number, and both my Walden 1/2" drive male-to-male extensions are marked with part numbers, so I'm at a loss on these:

Convert an older hex ratchet driver to those new fangled square drive sockets? I swear one of my vintage sets is 3/8” hex drive[/quote\

yeah but.... there's no detent ball on the 3/8" hex side, which makes it all the more puzzling.

^ Help me out here but I seem to recall Duro-Chrome branded 6 -inch extensions in O.D. green boxes as having had no bands on the ends... or does my memory fail me?

So... on the extension I'm looking for a Walden 1/4" set with that funny cad (or zinc) coating then, eh? I found seven Walden 1/4" sets so far.
I know there's others out there because I haven't hit that NOS set yet or the one with the wrenches in it. I DID find the RTEC spinner, though. Amazing.

only got through three boxes today.

1/2" drive x 9 inch extension. cross-hatch knurled band on drive end. stamped "Chrome Vanadium" (?) and "43" or "48" (?) - any idea on maker on this one?

also ran across a Walden 1/4" NOS set in a BLUE box - and since I posted this photo in the Walden thread it occurred to me that I may well have added the u-joint to the set at some point. (I'm pulling out all kinds of 1/4" drive u-joints in various brands.... no idea what that was about... )

Thanks for posting the blue box Walden set. Looks like I need to add a flex handle to mine. I added a u-joint to mine as well. I think I like the looks of your red spinner. I’ll look around for one. At least yours doesn’t have a crossbar. 😉IMG_0879.jpegIMG_0880.jpegIMG_6044.jpeg

"TM" is 1/4" drive. "M" is 9/32" drive, which your micrometer shows (18/64). And yes...I have a place for that amongst my wartime Snap on sets.

does a GMTK kit use a Vlchek cotter pin tool? anybody looking for a 240 Mossberg?

.... came across a bag with a mess of oddball sockets in it... is there still a "$1.00 socket thread" somewhere?

There aren’t any cotter pin pullers in a GMTK. Maybe try the GJ classifieds for the sockets. I’ve sold off quite a few Craftsman tools there.

And..., that is a prewar marking and tool. EDIT: Just checked my early Vlchek stash. No gots. Put it in the trade pile, please.

If you mean here on GJ, you're giving me bumper car flashbacks! I think that was from way before The Great Divide, when there was little to no organization, just a mess of threads, most of them selling or buying, and everyone bumping theirs every hour so that page 1 was all marketplace all the time. Thank goodness, and Ryan, those Dark Ages are behind us.

okay.. very good.. I'll set that one aside for you.

I'm thinking that some of these sockets are going to find new homes come December 25th. :ROFLMAO:
