Mike,
What did you end up doing for heat? I think I saw in another thread you were using radiant. What is your size and layout? It looks like you are doing all the things I am planning for my build. You have done a lot of planning. I just don't want to miss something before I pull the trigger on my build. Any new pics?

Yes I am going to do radiant floor heat. 40X64X16 is the building size. I ordered the 2700ft Pole barn pex manifold pole barn kit from blueridge. I bought a radiant heat water boiler off craigslist in Chicago. My building has 2X8 skirt board with 1.5" attached to it with a 45 at the top of the foam. I am doing 10mil poly on compacted recycled cement. On that poly I am putting 1.5" extruded poly styrene I found on craigslist used. Then I am putting tghe wire mesh on 2" chairs and tying the pex on that. Then we are pouring 5" of concrete.

Ill post this too but dont hold anyone to my numbers as each bid is their own. My building for materials and labor installed - 40X64X16 with 12X24 porch, full double bubble on roof and walls, wainscotting, 2 14X14 rollup doors, 3 pedestrian doors, and 4 windows, 2X8 skirt boards, 2X6 wall girts - it was just under $30K installed. My concrete with site prep is $10.5K - that is 5" and help installing all the parts I sourced (poly, foam, pex).

There are a few differences vs morton/cleary/fbi/ragland. I have trusses that are 4' on center. They are 2X4 trusses not 2X6 but I have 17 of vs 9. S&L builders uses the cheaper spliced laminated 6X6 poles with treated going about 6' above ground and then regular wood after that. I also have double 2X12s that the trusses sit on. I upgraded to 2X6 (from 2X4) wall girts and 2X8 skirt board (from 2X6) - these are standard on most. The only thing in this price range was getting a Menards it bldg put together. No major dealer could touch this. S&L does not do gutters and does not like to do concrete. My concrete guy is localish.

6" Tuxedo Grey Gutters and 4X3 downspouts installed this afternoon. Perfect as it is raining now and as of 10pm no water in shed. AWESOME! Cost a grand for those with calculators on my project. D&D Seamless gutters out of Benson, IL did them. Andy was super nice.

damn! that there is garage/workshop nirvana.

are you installing any ceiling fans to circulate the hot air during cold months?

seamless gutter machines are cool, aren't they? i had a crew install a 40' section on our house and it was entertaining watching it get extruded on site.

those guys do it all day and probably thought i was nuts for being so interested in it.

Huge amount of work accomplished today on this floor!! Finished grading, compacted base, 10mil poly sheeting down and taped, 1.5" extruded poly styrene foam sheets down and taped, concrete mesh down and tied, 2560 sq feet of 1/2" pex ran in nine loops, and about 2000 wire ties twisted!! Plastic step2 garden carts saved me tonight!!

Next up, pex manifold install and a 24 hour pressure test and waiting for the ground to dry out so we can get some cement trucks in!! Floor poured SOON!

We are looking into 1.5" Lotel Mesh Ups. www.meshups.com . Saw cut is 1.5" for expansion joints so this will put the pex at about 2.25" with a ~1/4" mesh wire thickness and 1/2" PEX.

That or we are just pulling it up and hoping for the best. We plan to pour 10/18 so not sure what is possible in the next week.

Last night we installed MeshUps (mesh chairs you can walk on) under the mesh and PEX. This gives a consistent elevation to the mesh/PEX and does not require the crew to pull the mesh up. I have a 5" floor so we used 1.5" mesh ups. The mesh is ~1/4". The PEX is 1/2 so about 5/8"OD. So the PEX is just under 2 3/8" in the floor. We will have a 1.5" saw cut for expansion joints.

Then this AM at 7am we started the pour. No calcium and a cool day made for a super long day. Here are a couple pictures before it sat up for hand and power troweling much.

Wow, that is turning out super nice !! Really like the two-tone colors which help break up the tall 16 ft walls. Hope you planned a couple reinforced spots in concrete so you can install a lift . . . . shop like that NEEDS a lift !!

Curious about conduit with fitting next to your Cat5e conduit . . . is that CSST in a conduit for NG heat or radiant floor?? Where does that come from??

Yes it is csst buried from the existing shop, I had a 2.5 conduit 90 so I brought it through the floor in that.

^ ^ Pretty sure that is against code to bring in Natural Gas service within the building. It needs to come up OUTSIDE building (above grade) so if there is underground leak it will dissipate into air, rather than inside building.

Also, there will certainly be moisture IN that underground conduit so rusting out of CSST will be potential problem. Couple this rusting problem and risk for lightning damage, I'm worried that your setup is unsafe. Many instances where homes blew up due to lightning strikes hitting improperly buried csst NG or propane lines.

Did local permit authority or gas company sign off on that setup??

I am doing direct bury from the house to the garage, no local permits or inspections required. My buddy is a supervisor for the gas company and states that it's perfectly legal and safe.

^ ^ You saying DIRECT BURY of CSST . . . thus NOT in conduit ?? Wowsa, that's surefire lightning explosion waiting to happen !! :scared:

OP, your setup with end-to-end conduit with the csst inside is likely fine (function wise and normal person safety), just not sure codewise. Your existing setup would be better IF it came up OUTSIDE the shop then entered above grade. Best setup (ie required setup here in KS & OK) would have been yellow plastic polyethelene buried pipe for the NG supply that came up outside of both buildings with risers.

OP, what method does ELECTRIC get to the shop?? That buried between house and garage?? Where does it come up in shop as I don't see electric panel in any of your pics??

what type of r-value do you expect out of the double bubble on the walls? is the wood you have stack going up on the walls?

From the 320 amp meterbase on the house it goes to a dedicated 200amp disconnect on house and then trenched underground and in conduit, then inside to the shop to the 200amp subpanel. Also have a 20hp rotary phase Temco box (20hp Baldor will sit below that) and then that feeds the 3ph panel on right.

Marine grade ply was a crazy CL deal in IL that the seller got offcuts from a job and resold them. The will go over my walls/insulation (have not picked the insulation yet) in two layers actually. I want to do a slatwall design like below URL.

Well I decided to bookcase the building and I ordered fiberglass kraft faced batts on Friday for the walls. Picked up the 2X6s today - here are the first 189 - full bunk. Menards 11% off week got me off my ****. Bookcasing 24" on center will make attaching the off cut ply sheets I got easier.

Another investment made last night - Ordered 3 Maxline 7500 kits 3/4" RapidAir Master Kits and a few elbows and T's. High hopes for having the air drops in the shop day 1. I know copper and black pipe are options but this seemed easier to install and I have already bit off quite a bit for myself.

I have 139 of 177 2X6s now book cased into the walls on the wall girts 2' on center between the posts. This will hold insulation and give framing to attach my walls too. Each is cut, drilled with a 2" forstner bit and kreg pocket hole screwed to the wall girt.

How are you finishing the interior walls? Trying to figure out the reason for the 2x6 being horizontal. My insulation was done vertical. It appears yours will be horizontal??

I am going to install marine grade plywood on the walls and do a slatwall setup for organization. I want the strongest attachment I can have for that slatwall. The sheets are new offcuts that are 32X48X3/4 sanded one side 7-ply.

Here is the DIY slatwall.

Love the build! As a fellow maker I am peanut butter and jealous of your space, in a good way!

I reckon you've seen Diresta videos?? He is one of my inspirations. Unconventional in some ways, but a true artisan. Looking forward to what you churn out of your new shop.

Warmer today and I had the day off so I worked on some wiring for the ceiling in the new shop.

Each quadrant of shop is getting 4 metal halide lights. Also putting in separate 20amp circuit for ceiling mounted outlets - those will get some retractable power cords later. I left 24" of romex at each outlet so I could remove the outlet and drop the wire through a ceiling later on. Also installing a garage door opener circuit - just one circuit for both doors.

I pre-wire 8' 2X4s with the circuit and outlets in my existing shop, then carry them out to the new shop and up the scaffolding. I install them on top of the lower board in the truss and then wire four 2X4s together.

Man 16' bottom truss is TALL!
