I bought the same player a few years ago from a pawn shop. Paid $5 for it as a none working machine. It worked fine when I got it home and has continued to do so for about 8 or 9 years now.
Sorry that yours was not so fortunate.

Andrew, they are really reliable machines and this one has been super reliable for me, considering how many hours it has been used. The weak links are the belts. I suspect the traction surface on the disk drive is the problem with mine but I can't work on it when it's full of disks. At least this lesson in dishonesty hasn't been a financial hit -- yet.

Bob,
I would notify EBay about what the seller now attempting so they will know the seller is a scammer.
Mark, I have no proof they are scammers and this seller has a 99.9% positive rating. I became suspicious when they refunded my money so quickly.
EBay really doesn’t care about scammers. That’s been demonstrated here on the GJ over and over and over…
Scott, they were happy to let someone in China post $15.99 portable arc welders. By refunding my money eBay fixed a problem that should never have existed. It's a corporation with $10.8B in revenues so I doubt caring is part of their culture.

Hi Bob, as a long-time reader of your thread, I've been interested in your postings about your CD changers. I have one of the same models, and mine stopped working years ago. Thanks to your posts, I now know to look at the belts when I get around to opening up the case. I hope that's all that needs replacing, as I'm not sure if I could troubleshoot any of the electronics. I couldn't believe all the mayhem you found when you opened your UPS package.

Obviously the buyer (me) would file a return claim based on the thing delivered not matching what was advertised. Sure enough, after they refunded my entire purchase price, they filed a claim with UPS. I know this because UPS called me, wanting photos of the box and contents. I had already provided the photos to eBay and the seller so I went to the UPS site to see what was going on. The exact words I had used to file my claim with eBay showed up in the seller's claim with UPS -- except for the part about the box being in perfect condition.

I had an eBay seller pull a very similar insurance scam with the USPS many years ago for a package I received. Like you, all my $$ was refunded, so I didn't report the fraud or take action against the seller. But it really left a bad taste for me about the scams some people are capable of pulling.

Rick, I got back on eBay and found another changer. This one was about $150 and the seller listed it as "one owner" and excellent condition. The destroyed one was manufactured in May 2004 and this one in April 2002 (happy 20th birthday). This time the machine arrived undamaged and as I suspected, it needed carousel and changer belts. The original belts have turned to black tar, which refused to come off with paint thinner so I attacked them with lacquer thinner.

I was able to get the disk changer belt pulleys (on the right) cleaned in place and the new belt installed. The carousel Belt drive pulleys were much worse so I removed the driven pulley and cleaned it on the bench. Really glad I bought the Costco pack of 3,000 Q-Tips.

Before I put the covers back on I tested the machine and it is running through all its cycles just like the one I bought 20 years ago.
Never underestimate the creativity of criminals.
Scott, I am shocked and disappointed every time someone pulls a stunt like that. I can't live in fear of the bad guys so I get taken advantage of every once in a while. My only revenge is to waste as much of their time as possible. I love the calls from the "I'm from Microsoft and we see your computer is infected with a virus. We can remove it but you have to give us permission to access the machine...." scam. The tenth time I say "I don't understand your instructions, could you repeat that?" they seem to disappear.

I tell them that if they can see the virus they're already in my computer and wouldn't need my permission to to access it- just go ahead and do whatever makes them happy.

For most of this week I tried to chill out and smell the flowers. Unfortunately the wind has not cooperated and I have failed to smell anything. It's understandable that I can't smell the orchids but the overpowering smell of the Gardenias is also being blown away. I don't really know when Spring comes to South Florida but despite all the leaves falling off the Florida Mahogany it appears to be here.

With no sign of the wind dying down, I decided yesterday to get rid of the branches that are touching the wedding chapel. It's an oak tree and my hand pole saw has a razor sharp blade and made quick work of the small branches. When I tried using the es electric pole chainsaw, it tried to burn through the large branches at the trunk. Thought about swapping a new chain but went for the round file that has an angle guide. Amazing how much better a sharp chain works. Another pile for the Monday pickup.

Bob I have my original JVC 5 disc cd changer from 1995. I bet all that is wrong with it is the drive belts. I will have to get it out of the closet and see if that is indeed what is wrong. (Good thing I saved it along with my dual cassette tape deck) I love Spotify and streaming but then sometimes it is nice to just have something mechanical to use in case the internet is out.

Scott, that's exactly what I did the first few times. I felt like an idiot arguing with an idiot. Getting them to stay on the line and waste their time was much more satisfying and retirement gives me a fair amount of time to make their life miserable.
Bob, you are a ROCK STAR!!!!! "....instructions, could you repeat that?" I bow at the feet of a Master.
Kirk, I may have done something similar with the Jehovah's witness folks. If you dedicate enough time on the first couple of visits explaining your views on the bible, they stop showing up. I felt the urge to learn some Aramaic and whip out a copy of a Dead Sea Scroll.

Your yard has always looked like a park. Well at least it’s not hurricane wind.

nice work!!
Thanks for stopping by Drives. Hurricane season starts in five and a half weeks so now is a good time to start pruning back the stuff that can do real damage. The mahogany out front and the oaks out back are pretty strong but the general rule is to keep them trimmed enough to throw a cat through.

Bret, before they came out with these big Sony changers I had a JVC 5-disk and bought a bunch of cartridges. I am having problems with the Pioneer 12-CD changer in the '87 Corvette and plan to attack that next (or right after the 82 honey-dos). I keep the few hundred CDs around in case the hard drives on every computer in the house crashes or hackers lock me out of them. All the cars have orphan iPods with all the CDs loaded on each one -- it's great to be able to play all 1400+ songs in random order (not just the songs on one CD). I have to resort to CDs because "Classic Rock" is now 80s and 90s music. Sometimes I like a little Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis or Elvis. My current music source is a few dozen thrift stores.

After I transferred 350 CDs from the 'old' changer to the 'new' changer I expected some issue to appear. The only issues were with the previous owner's settings and once I re-read the manual, the settings were changed to the ones I use. Seems to be working flawlessly. Pretty cool for a 20-year-old piece of equipment.

Did some potted plant moving and cleanup in the back yard. The small Snow Joe chainsaw was having trouble cutting the oak even after sharpening the chain teeth. Time for the old reliable Remington 16-inch electric chain saw and as always it cut through the tough logs like butter. Not sure exactly how long I've had that saw but I've been using it the whole time we've lived in this house and that's 25 years. Loaded the pieces in a cart to take out front Sunday afternoon.
Oak Tree Trimming 2.jpg
That longer piece bothered me so I picked up the chain saw and pulled the trigger -- nothing. Checked the extension cord and it was fine, as was the outlet. The saw was not smoking but it was giving off a burning smell and I suspected the brushes were wearing down. I'm on the third or fourth clutch in the Remington so it might be time for new ones. Turned the A/C on in the shed and disassembled the saw, hoping for an easy fix and if not easy, not requiring machine shop equipment. Pulled the motor apart and discovered a tiny problem. The commutator has a missing section or two.

I'm actually glad this happened today. I usually discover a tool is dead when I need it most and this one gave up the ghost when the job was done. Amazon will be delivering a new 26" chain saw later this week (I opted not to have it delivered Monday).

Nice bit of gardening.

I agree on finding damage or loss of functio early, rather than mid-job. Or like you found it .

Amazed to even see the inside of a tool these days.

Does look somewhat beyond salvation.

Rian, it's running out of gas with 99% of the job complete and then discovering the second gas can is empty. In my youth, sucking a gallon of leaded out of the car was no big deal but now it's a full stop and try again tomorrow.

I feel like I'm letting @Vieux down, giving up on a repair so easily.
25 is like 175 in dog years.
It had a long productive life, Bob.
Your autopsy proved that.
Scott, I really liked that saw and was going to buy another Remington. Then I thought 25 years? I'll be 102 and too lazy to order another one. The Wen I ordered should last ten years and I can tell my then 69-year old son to get me another one.
Bob,
I shouldn’t still be amazed with the amount of work you get through, but I am, great job with the CD player and the garden. 👏🏻👏🏻
I spent yesterday cutting hedges more to do today, I need to retire, I’m cream crackered.
Have a great day

Steve 🍻
Steve, considering I have 7 Saturdays every week, not a lot is getting done but I'm enjoying myself and that's what matters. You have a great day as well!
Seems like you get your moneys worth from that chain saw.
Might check the warranty card :ROFLMAO:
Only 25 years, piece of junk.
Patrik, Marc and Uncle Willie, now I regret not buying a better (AKA more expensive) saw back then. It might have lasted 26 years.
Holly cow, a 26" chain saw! That is one heck of a step up in your tree trimming game.

JB
JB, thanks so much for pointing that out. I may still have time to cancel the order. I can barely handle the 16" one. :lol_hitti

Surprised they don’t have a cordless model. Should have ordered a Hart 16” cordless 😁
Shorty, I already have too many battery systems in my collection. The Hart plus battery is $199 and that is getting close to the Milwaukee M18 price. I am willing to invest $56 in a new chainsaw that doesn't need the carburetor cleaned every time I take it out. Four or five times as much to avoid a cord. I also notice the cordless chainsaws are about 4 pounds heavier -- I'm already pushing my luck with a 10-pound corded.

Pete, took a red-eye to Gatwick and didn't get any sleep. Drove from Gatwick to Preston and was completely cream crackered. Almost as bad as flying from Florida to Sydney and then trying to find the hotel. I was Kerry-Packered that time.

********! You were probably so knackered during the drive you made the dog’s breakfast out of it.

I've actually had really good luck with Wen tools. My old floor standing drill press was Wen, and I really liked it. I haven't got much use from them, but I've been decently impressed with my Wen drywall sander and planer.

Tom, I'm with you on the Wen tools. I have two Dremel knockoffs and a track saw that works great for me. I'm sure the five times more expensive tools are better than Wen but 99% of my screwups have nothing to do with the tools.

Time flies when you are doing next to nothing. The low voltage lights leading up to the front door have been acting up for a year or so. They have glass globes and use T10 wedge bulbs. I switched to LEDs last year and they have been failing at the rate of one a month for more than a year. Decided to go with a different, more modern style (our house is nondiscript era but leans modern. Solar lights, which keep getting better, still require sunlight and the tree in our front yard makes sure we get very little. On the other hand, cheap low voltage systems seem to have all but disappeared. I settled on the black stanchion ones.
Entrance Lighting 1.jpg
Outdoor low voltage lights usually come with connectors but these, costing a lot more, expect you to buy your own connectors. I dug the pebbles up and used these truly frustrating connectors that probably would have worked well with new wire but the 20+ year old cable insulation has hardened to rock.
Entrance Lighting 3.jpg
Took an hour to install each light so I quit after installing two fixtures. I am amazed at the amount of light these throw out and happy I chose a warmer color. The old lights were bright but didn't really illuminate the walkway. However, they did shine in your face!
Entrance Lighting 2.jpg
Got the first five installed and discovered one had a bad connection. Dug it back up and found one wire had pulled out. Fixed it and tested to make sure it wasn't going pull out again. I like that the lights are further back and less of a tripping hazard.
Entrance Lighting 4.jpg
Had a long discussion with SWMBO regarding the lights in the garden. If I break one of the plants, sleep in the garage or risk an accidental stabbing in the night. I managed to remove all the old lights, pull the cable out of the ground and install the new lights with only one plant damaged. I hid the evidence in the bottom of a pile of iguana corpses. The install was delayed by a few days waiting for 12-inch long black pipe ******* to get the lights above the lower foliage.
Entrance Lighting 5.jpg
Liane was skeptical about these lights but liked them better when they came on after dark.

Looks great Bob, very inviting! Now you just need to replace that bulb over the window off to the right of frame 😁

Warm color temperature at night is always the right choice (in my humble opinion). Personally I wouldn't go cooler than 2700k at night, which is around what incandescent is. Daylight balanced bulbs have a purpose, but I don't understand why so many LEDs take it a step further to a "cool white". And are so bright. What you ended up with looks great.
