Had a fire-sale on eBay of all my old slot car/model/kit collection (30+ yrs in the making) - only about 200 items in all but seem to have raised about twice what I was hoping for so my just about have sufficient funds to go ahead in the New Year with phase 1 of the build = get the slab down and run electric from house to slab.

Nice work, Baz. Nothing like turning some old stuff that's just taking up space into more space -- a nice double whammy. :)

Good to hear you're getting closer to getting something built.

And that mate, is what they call life ehh?

Sorry about the car troubles, but on the other hand, exciting times ahead if you managed to generate some funds.

Baz,

Have you updated your plans around your new budget, or are you sticking with your modified original plans?

I bet if you brought Grizz in he could help source some of the materials. He has a way with frugality.

Hi Jeff, no the original plans are nearly £1,000 worth of blotting paper. Even the revised ones worked out way beyond my budget so now I'm going with a wooden structure, built to my specs, supplied and fitted by the manufacturer for a price I think I can afford.

More details will follow once I know where I stand financially etc.

OK, spent a hour this morning sorting the car out and after fitting a new starter motor and repairing some shocking wiring (done by a previous owner!) I'm back on the road!

So apart from the £95 for the starter the garage fund is pretty intact.

My daily driver has taken a dump on me, may have to dip into the garage fund for repairs or replacement! ******!!!

Same here!Alternator packed in on my Jeep.Had to use cash I had set aside for sarking boards for the garage roof.I was hoping to get the roof done by Christmas,no chance now!
Good to hear you'll be starting phase 1 soon though.Hope all goes well with no more hitches.

Cheers Mark,
Main thing at the moment is trying to get hold of the builder, he's brilliant so I really want to use him but because he's so good he's always busy (even now!) so it's hard to get hold of him!

Hi Baz, good to see another person on this forum from the UK and constrained by all the planning and space issues we have. What's you approx budget for this? It's quite a big garage (by our standards) you're aiming for. Good luck too. :) Rich...

Hey! Not sure how I missed this thread before, but I just got caught up. I lived in Newmarket for a couple of years.

I like the vehicles you have and the plans you've made for the garage.

good luck with it,im hoping to build my garage soon 18ftx19ft or there abouts to keep in the 30m2 limit so i dont need planning.Wanted to put a A pex roof on it but that would need planning so sticking to a flat roof at 2.5m high which is a pain, dont want the building control or harrow council on my back..

The garage is about £5k erected. Waiting for a price on the slab. Got a mate who'll do the electrics at cost and I'll insulate and fit it out myself. Hoping to get it all done for under £10k.($16k)

Now that winter is well and truly here all plans are on hold until the Spring. In the New Year I'll be hassling the builder regarding a price for all the groundwork...........honestly, I will!

You need to move out here to the Fens mate, the council only know what you tell them, parish council stuck their nose in only to complain that a delivery truck had left a rut in the verge, sorted in no time and got a contract to cut the verges all round the village !

Although I don't currently have a garage I do have a few things to put in it when it's built. Most are packed away but this is currently on the wall behind my computer desk in the house:
eBay002_zpsa2867f2d.jpg

The sign is a tatty old advertising sign for Dunlop Denovo run-flat tyres. It's aluminium and shaped like a spare tyre cover meaning there's a nice space behind it. A cheap clock movement and a pair of hands off eBay, a little orange paint on the hands and there we have it. Overall diameter is about 20" so it's a decent size for a garage. Keeping good time too!

Ha! _ I had Denovo tyres on my first car, a 'T reg' 1275GT Mini in green. It was nice to see it stills survives, and even made a feature in 'Mini World' some years ago.

The Michelin Man or 'Bibendum' as he is called are very rare. Good Score!

Cheers - and keep us posted of the plans. Are you still going brick or block?

Brick and/or block was way out of my price range so I'll be going for a wooden structure on 6" base wall to keep the wood off the ground. The wood bit, delivered and erected comes in at £5k. So I'll need to get the base done complete with 6" 'wall' in the right places for the garage to be built onto.

Determined to get it done by next winter. Even if I have to wait for electrics and insulation etc. Really want the building itself done and weather-tight by then.

Don't let the setbacks make you give up, I know what your going through. It took over 5 years of delays when we built the house and then we had to changes the type of design due to finances in the end.

As long as you are in an ok area a wooden garage should not be an issue. It's just from a security point of view really. Americans on here all build wooden garages of a type at the end of the day.

There's a similar size wooden one just along the alley from me and the alley itself gets no through traffic, just residents so should be OK from a security point of view, I will be fitting decent locks and an alarm system though.

Happy to go with the wood now as it's easier to insulate and control condensation. And it's much, much cheaper.

I have just started to get my garage sorted out to get the two cars in there sold and to replace them with one American flavour car.

Hi Rian,

With Christmas and New Year working I should be able to boost the garage fund with a few hundred quid, hopefully during the year I'll pick up some overtime towards it as well. Basic salary just covers my outgoings with no scope to save unfortunately.

how's the job search going mate?

Saw your post about getting a Yank, a big Yank Tank with the Grizz touch eh? Can't wait!

I built a wooden double garage with workshop and it was fine. Fitted two metal 'up and over' doors rather than wooden ones to help with security and reduce future maintenance.

Initially I used roofing felt over stirling board for the roof, but such a large area proved a problem with felt staying in place in high winds, so after some advice from a Canadian, I eventually tiled the roof using Cedar shingles which were much better and looked right as well.

Regards...John (Bedfordshire)

Hi mate, very quiet time of year now, even the agencies have shut down.

I had two interviews with no feedback at the tail end of the year which I hold hope for to get a second interview to, the one is a 4 interview series, the other is a two step and the second could be tough if they want to see me again.

I would be happy with either as they are high end and seriously challenging jobs..... unfortunately I have specialized over the years, so tend to prefer niche markets where super specialization is ideal.

Re the yank tank..... yep, as soon as I get Myrtle and the bus sold, I will be looking at something stupid where one needs to plan your fuel stops based on pure cubic inches sucking fuel..... and it should be truck shaped. :bounce::bounce::bounce:

Finally managed to speak to the builder this afternoon. Turns out he's been in and out of hospital for most of the past year with back issues and a cancer scare. He also managed to break his hand then, while taking it easy, got the other hand caught in a fork-lift and broke that too!

He has another hospital appt at the end of the month then he's going to come round and see where we are.

Sounds like he's doing the work of two men....
