It's starting to look the part Bull. The box looks massive inside the barn.

Re: Picking Up a Lista Tomorrow

I began in the afternoon by prepping the top for paint, since it was wearing the old battered coat still. I was just going to scuff it with a DA sander, but saw a Wagner Paint Eater sitting on my bench. I've thought about throwing it away before, because for the job I bought it for, it failed (stripping my clapboards.) However, I gave it a whirl and found that it did a good job of removing paint and rust from the steel. I went down to bare metal for the whole top.

Then I rolled on two coats of Hammertone Gray, using a 6" high density foam roller. Man o man, this is the weirdest paint I have ever worked with. You get ZERO time to roll it out and try to blend it in/avoid lines from the edge of the roller. Within seconds, if you go back over an area you create what essentially looks like cobwebs or cotton candy fibers flying off your roller and landing in the now sticky paint. It's bizarre. Maybe thinning it would have helped?

At any rate, the paint job has edges/mild zebra striping, but it looks way better than it did with two coats of Hammertone from a rattle can.

Tonight I spent some time cleaning the bearings and rollers on the drawer carriages. I then oiled the bearings with MMO, put the u-channels into the cabinet frame, and installed the drawers.

Here you can see what the carriage assembly looks like. As Joe has pointed out, this is now an antiquated design that Lista no longer uses.

Here is how it looks all back together. I am super-happy. The gray and blue look really good to my eye. I still need to polish and wax the drawer faces, which I hope to do tomorrow.

I started lining the drawers with that tacky liner from eBay that everyone raves about. It stinks like chemicals, but I doubt the tools are ever going to move accidentally on this stuff.

The next step is to organize, which I will post pics of as I go. I'm not good at it and could use some help.

Where can I get this "tacky liner". I'm looking for some good stuff for my kra rebuild.

Looks great but the way. I'm jealous.

Thanks for the interest, everyone. I do need to look into some dividers for the drawers. I'll ask Joe if he has any used stock laying about.

The drawer liners are these here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOOL-BOX-DR...317?pt=Tool_Boxes_Storage&hash=item4cfd42ce3d

In the ad they are described as "black" and they sure do look black in the pic. Mine are gray, and don't seem to have the same pattern on the surface that the linked ones do. But, those are the ones I bought and they are super-tacky.

yes, if you are using the dense foam rollers, you need to thin the rustoleum way down to thin(creamer-ish)

it shouldnt tack up in just a couple seconds, and should self level as it its for a minute. but to get a bright gloss with the roller, you gotta sand/paint/santpaint/wet sand a couple times.

looks good tho, i like the color combo

Man I'm digging that two-tone look with the dark gray outer shell and the light blue drawer fronts. Real professional looking.

Awesome, Thanks for the link. I'm going to order a set for my KRA. I just hope the ones I receive will be black!

Bull,

Check out the LISTA drawer liners for your cabinet. They are really nice and not that expensive. As far as dividers, I don't stock those but we do offer GJ folks an extra 5% from the 15% we already have on our site.

Bull,

Those coasters are Cadillac!:bounce:

I think you'll love those liners. Nothing in those drawers will move! Mine do not have any odor so yours may just need unrolling and airing out.

Look at all that real estate!

Good to know about the thinning. I guess I am not willing to put all that time into multiple coats of paint, sanding etc. When I look at the "hammered" finish on my old Craftsman cabinets, they aren't super-shiny. I figure the Hammertone is to cover defects, anyway, so a mirror finish isn't what I should strive for. I am completly satisfied with the box now, despite the painting imperfections.

Nice work - that's quite a project. You'll enjoy that chest for a loooooong time.

Dave

Thanks; that's the idea. This is a lifetime box for me!

I was nervous about how the colors would mesh, but like this better than the vintage Craftsman gray and red that I was initially going to go for. This is my new scheme.

The Colsons are really, really nice. Joe hooked me up with great stuff.

As for the real-estate; tell me about it! I thought I was going to be trapped forever in small boxes because of the barrel I'd have to bed over to buy a large (I wanted wide) truck brand box. This Lista solved that problem. I have about $900 into it, and I know $900 doesn't buy any truck brand box with this much space or weight capacity.

I have a question: what do you guys think I should put on the top of the box to protect it? I am going to put a stereo and speakers up there, some book-ends, and some service manuals for my cars. I thought about putting down cork, mesh drawer liner, or solid rubber to protect the surface and keep stuff from moving around. What would you guys do?

Just out of curiosity why do you need to wax and polish the drawer faces? Are you waxing the whole box or just the faces?

Just the faces. They aren't going to shine because the paint is not gloss. But I want to even out the finish on them and give them some protection against grease smudges.

I'm for the hutch idea. I think you soon enough will wish for more space on top of the box. Less you are about to take up the tips from our friend Andres.

Re: Picking Up a Lista Tomorrow

Bull,

Here is some more information on mounting the Lista waffle plates and the casters.

The reference is my two Lista cabinets that I turned into a mobile. Had this been configured at the factory the base would have been a pan arrangement with angle iron steel wrapped around it all. In my situation I took a HS750 and a ST750 cabinet and bolted them together. They are 40-1/4"x x 22-1/2"d for the HS750 and the ST750 is 28-1/4"w x 22-1/2"d.

The pic waffle1.jpg show the waffle plate mounted front-to-back on the ST cabinet. The ST side show the end caps on the waffle plates while I did not bother to install them on the HS plates. The pic waffle2.jpg shows the waffle plates mounted right-to-left on the HS cabinet. The other thing you will notice it's filthy underneath my cabinets. Time for a cleanup. Haha!!

Joe,

Would you advise against using these waffle plates and casters on 59" high Listas? Would they be too top heavy?

Thanks
