Jim, I have the twin to that scooter. Just needs batteries (yikes). I’m going to set up a mini lift table on it. Should make it easier to get stuff out of Craig shop. Lol.

Car show/swap meet season is coming, I got an idea.

A friend with bad knees mounted a fishing seat and some handle bars on his for our big swap meet. It sure was nice to rest the pups while he had long talks with people about something they were selling.

Never buy anything from scooter companies unless you have to. Through a battery company is about 1/2 of scooter company. Some of the fuses are the same as golf carts, about 1/3 of the price. Switches through electric supply house is 1/5 cost.

Stopped by my favorite scrap yard just to look.

Just about ready to leave and decided to look in one last corner.
5a72a2b8dd0c1ce1bfdd42a25b553559.jpg

There was two of these floats, swivels with 8” wheels and two fixed 10” wheels.

I was prepared today! I had my tool bag.

Here’s the haul. A 167lbs. Of casters.
45f2b38d4e5ee614962ac2ab39c87ff0.jpg

I somehow managed not to have a 12” adjustable wrench in the bag, I only have about 25 of them in the shop.
The 10” and a pair of vise grips worked on the fixed casters, as they just had a single axle bolt.
The swivels had 3/8” bolts, and I was ready with a correct size socket/ratchet, no blood blisters from needle nose vise grips like last time. Until I got to the second cart, it had very rusted square head bolts and nuts.
I was able to get a 12 point socket on the square. A couple were just not going to cooperate and they knew I didn’t have a fire wrench.
For some reason, I stuck a couple of chisels in my bag, and that did the trick.

I really liked the wheels with the holes in them, I’m planning on using on a mobile vise base.

Right before pulling out, I found one more cart. Of course I flipped it over and left it like a car in Miami, with no wheels.

Those look like some nice casters/wheels, I have a hard time passing up casters myself. It all started back when I was 20 years old, I was at the scrap yard and there was a refrigerator box full (yes full) of decent sized (I think 6") swivel casters. I asked the owner how much, he said they weren't worth anything to him (scrap at the time was $20 a ton for prepared #1), so I offered him $20 and he took it. I still have some of them today..........

Well you’re rolling on good finds. Hopefully the wheels with the holes end up on something vintage looking.

Strouty, that’s a cool story, sounds like something I’d done.

Shorty, yes on using for something vintage looking.

Jim, I always grab casters when I come across, it will definitely be the topic of my family after they go through my stuff after I’m gone.

“ Jesus, look at all the damn casters. “

“ look, I just found some more in the drawers”

“ what the hell was he thinking”:lol_hitti:lol_hitti

I know Shorty is thinking of the field day he’ll have in my shop when I’m gone, but I’m not worried, because statistically I’ll outlive him due to the amount of blood in his posts!

It’d probably be dangerous for me to say I’d give you a run for money Strouty.

We have plenty of auto salvage places up by me, but I need to find I place like this with more industrial stuff to rummage through when I need parts for a new project. Looks like a fun place to browse at.

Both the ones I’ve been to are in smaller towns. It’s getting hard to find ones that let you come in and look around.

The one just lets me wander the field, if something happened to me, they wouldn’t know until the buzzards are flying around.:lol_hitti

I’m currently searching for a rack and pinion type mechanism for a in design project. Like what’s on a drill press table to raise and lower, if anyone knows of one.

I was thinking the same thing, I wander the auto yards for nothing except a target of opportunity, would be nice to get to look at more random items in a wander, probably better I don't while I can still walk around a little in my shop :)

Who knew there were a bunch of caster hoarders on GJ?
Who is going to start the thread "show us your casters!"

Caster hoarders? Most of (thats 51% right?) the casters I buy, I have a plan in mind for them. Now sometimes plans change, and the casters become potential stock for the possible project that I’m sure will happen, some day.:lol_hitti

I did dedicate substantial shelf space for their temporary storage.

Ok, maybe there is some hoarding going on, but it’s temporary.:lol_hitti

It isn’t the size that matters, but, I do have some big casters too. ;)

Strouty being funny.

and we got one touting how big his casters are....

WTF size is the bigger one anyways?

The big caster is 10”x4” wide. I picked it up from a industrial client to so we could build a pipe dolly to move 40’ joints of pipe through a narrow area. We were told to keep them after job was done. They sat attached to this dolly for about 6 years and my company was going to scrap the dolly. Scrappy Cbacres here at your service.
It’s depressing to see what gets thrown in the scrap bin these days, but space and labor are at a premium so it’s a business decision. I’m just glad I can do my part to help the environment.

It amazes me that this caster’s width is the same as a average diameter caster.

I’d like to start a rescue of sorts to save stuff like this.:lol_hitti

Rescuing is the easy part, storing it is the hard part. I have a “no kill” shelter for wayward and unwanted things myself. ;)
