Happy Birthday Andy. I am sure you will enjoy every day on this trip around the sun because 6/7 of them are Saturdays!

Your tires look like some of the ones I was hand mounting and trying to keep air in when I was in college. I had 14 and 15 inch rims that would fit my 69 Nova and I would watch people's trash for tires. I kept an old 50# freon tank that had been converted with a manifold to allow air fill ups in the trunk of the car. I still use the tank every now and then.

Happy birthday, Andy! Those are some real bologna skins; I'd run them another couple of laps then try to unload 'em on craigslist. Enjoy this fine Saturday :D

Well a belated Happy 4th 17th Birthday Andy. I'm glad you had a good one.

I hate to correct you (like hell I do) but that tire is not a "may pop", it has got to the "will pop" stage. A "may pop" still has enough life in it to drive from Oklahoma to Maine.

Anyway, my wife thinks I should take a ride out to see you. (I'm kind of wondering why she wants me to go way out there:headscrat). If I thought I could trust my shop help to get the work out, I might consider it. They struggle enough when I'm here directing them. Don't get me wrong they're good mechanics, just don't seem to have a "take charge' attitude. We'll see.

I'd like to say nice weld but it's not clear that it is. I'll just assume you did an adequate job as you do with everything else. I hope you can carry on without my okay.:bounce:

Happy 17th birthday, again! OK, I am a bit late, but only one day. That's almost like being on time.
There's parts of me that still think they are 17 too. Especially if I get behind the wheel of a fast car like you have. Hope you had a good one.
As far as your outlook on unsolicited advice, I like it. I've never met anybody I couldnt learn from, some just take longer than others.:)

 I am enjoying the trip. Even though there are briars, there are roses too.

In high school I worked in a Mobil station. The boss would give me any slick tires which he couldn't resell. He did let me fix my flats for free using his supplies. I carried two spares and needed both of them some days. Occasionally a sticker would be the culprit. I got good at changing tires, but I never had an air tank until after college. Of course I worked in filling stations in college.

Happy birthday, Andy! Those are some real bologna skins; I'd run them another couple of laps then try to unload 'em on craigslist. Enjoy this fine Saturday :D

 Craigslist, yes! Thanks for the tip!!

 It was a great birthday. I get a kick out of having a parade with my little collection. Wish I'd had Miss Vicky running, we had enough drivers. Soon.

No, it's a may pop, and I may just prove it by using it again this year. I've got another I need to take a picture of which is a tire that amazes me every time I use it. Technically all tires are "will pop" it just takes patience and perseverance. Like everything else.

Listen to your wife. Give her a break and come to see me. You will be surprised how well the crew does without the slave driver.:shocking: It would be great to have you here for a few days, then I might be encouraging you to take a little drive and see your wife.:bounce:

I'm devastated that you seem to think my work is marginal. Are my pictures too clear? I'll practice swinging the camera as I take pictures. That should help.

I'll get the spare room ready. You prefer saltines or club crackers in the sheets?

Happy Birthday today for yesterday. You Birthday is on Saturday most every year I'm guessing.

Looks like a great way to celebrate with family and a nice personal car show and parade.

 Actually my birthday is on Sunday some years. If fact I was born on Easter Sunday. It was a great day!

Well I guess it's too late to wish you a happy birthday so I won't. Or maybe I just did. Aghh. Whatever.

Your tires are fine. If (when) it does just put a tube in it and a patch over the hole. Nothing overkill just a piece of tread (?) From another tire.
Wondering if you can still buy tubes that size.??

Happy Birthday Andy. I completely understand the 4th time to 17 because you were born on the 17th. My wife, one granddaughter and I were born on the 18th of various months and that's why I celebrated my 4th time turning 18 last year.

According to one of those date calculators I was 1,672 days old the day you were born. I hope that makes you feel young because four and a half years old when you were born sounds like I'm the older twin. Younger and cuter, no wonder Mom liked you best.

Well I guess I won't acknowledge your well wishes. Or did I? Now you've got me doing it:willy_nil:willy_nil

That's what I was thinking on the tires, maybe a boot or something. I do keep boots around, by the way, and use them. If you don't know what boots are, then you're not truly cheap.

You can still buy tubes most any size. And it has been that way for a long time. During WWII tires were rationed. My dad was transferred from Waco, TX to Homestead, FL in preparation for shipping out (B-17 pilot). My folks had just married and their tires were not good. Dad bought two tubes but could not buy a spare tire. So they were heading out on a 1,400 mi trip on bald tires in a Model B Ford with no spare. My mom, bless her heart, asked whether they could air up the tubes before they left. She was very conservative, worried, and trying to help. My dad, nice as he was, managed to remind her of that request for the next 70 years.

Sounds like you're trying to be one year older than me, but if you were born on the 18th doesn't that make you the younger? If mom didn't like you best why did have to live in the basement? And was I ever allowed to join you for meals? Huh? Who is the favorite?

I admit to being cuter and smarter and better armed. But hardly the favorite. And I still think you're younger.

No wonder mom wouldn't let us together as children. Has anything changed much? Did you mature?

Thanks for looking in on me, that's a good brother!

Every 17 year old boy needs a cool truck to cruise around in does he not ? Or perhaps a cool COE or bus converted car carrier.

Best regards for yesterday.

GB

Cool truck:rocker:

What do you recommend? I'm sort of looking.

Thank you for the regards!

Here we go again!:willy_nil You tried to slip that in about not being older than me, but I'm pretty good at ciphers and I'm sure you're older than me.

But it's OK, as old friends we can just pretend you're younger.

Another 17 does not seem like much, time is flying by, nes pas?:sad:

Thanks for driving over!

(We've seen my neighbors mobile-minimum here before. He does have a classy spread)

Yesterday my hired man trimmed around the foundry roof. Great guy!

IMG_1365_zpszhuyggoj.jpg

Today I picked out a piece of poplar to make a cone pattern to cast a port for my burner in the last furnace tile. Here it is squared and in the lathe.

IMG_1366_zpskkemuejp.jpg

Roughed one end

IMG_1367_zpshxm9hxsz.jpg

Making chips!

IMG_1368_zps9gg4vjqn.jpg

And turned.

IMG_1370_zpsh65h4z61.jpg

Radius marked and bandsawn

IMG_1371_zpscmozaj8m.jpg

And it fits better than I expected. In fact it was all easier than expected. First trial is OK and all that's needed.

IMG_1372_zpsah2jzkfb.jpg

It's supposed to shoot the flame in tangentially, I think it is a go!

Dug out the old table saw sled to cut notches in the shelving support boards.

IMG_1374_zps7xibivix.jpg

I had crosscut the first cut using the miter gauge set to 90 degrees. The sled made holding the piece for the second cut safer.

IMG_1375_zpssg0hpjhv.jpg

I clamped a stop on the cutoff side to avoid getting different cuts due to variations in 2x4 width. This is the undesirable side to have the stop as the cutoff piece is pinched between the stop and the blade and can be thrown.

IMG_1376_zpsppemcqkq.jpg

Out of 44 cuts it threw four and they just hit the other side of the sled. Ideally I would have used the back of the sled but did not want to take the finger jig off which is screwed there.

Notches made

IMG_1377_zpsi4jvowe0.jpg

There are another 44 straight pieces which do not need a notch.

One sheetrock finisher came today and taped all the work.

IMG_1378_zpse4hxnacs.jpg

And the insulation lady stopped by tonight to measure for ceiling insulation. She mentioned bartering insulation labor for tractor repair labor!:rocker:

Don't ya just love progress!

I saw a sign for me: Start Ya *******!

So I did:lol:

Thanks for dropping in everyone!!

Happy B-Day Andy! Glad you got to spend your 17th with good family, well earned cars and Mexican.

PS. Remember the story you told about running a load of 3" pipe when you were younger? I think you just proved that you do, in fact, still have the wrench!:lol::lol:

 Thank you!

I wish that the day we were screwing 3" pipe I had a 36" pipe wrench. The pipe tongs we used were about 5 ft long and I could not carry two. I've looked on the net and can't find a comparable picture. They were non-adjustable, for 3" pipe (3-1/2" OD) only, with knife edges for gripping. They did work well, and work you well too.

Thanks for stopping in!

Andy, your foundry is looking fantastic..

Your dry wall is nearly ready for sanding I see..

Tractor repair now that might open a can of worms..

Have a good one..

1/2 thanks for stopping in!

Can you be here this afternoon for sanding the first coat?

While I'm wishing I had not volunteered to fix their tractor, I did so I will.:willy_nil

Note to self: Start making brooms, dummy.

Birthday! Who the heck has birthdays when they're old enough to be classified as an artifact? Blow out the candles and go get registered as a historic landmark; maybe you can get a discount on your tax burden? Hope you have many more Andy and stay healthy too. I've been having an issue with lights flickering in the house. Some voltage dips, some spikes. Bad ground, loose connection? When we added on to the house I relocated and replaced the small fuse box with a breaker box and added more circuits.

My initial fear was that one of the splices in the attic (of course I didn't run new wiring, just extended the existing). But on investigation, new circuits were flickering too. It was very intermittent. After getting incoming power voltage fluctuations with my main off I broke down and called the utility. One of the guys that showed up is a friend. So we took a ten minute shop tour, and revved up the Chevelle. They had a BIG truck.

IMG_1379_zpsb0qyfhi4.jpg

Which was good because they needed to reach to the transformer which is 25 ft away from access. My fault.

IMG_1380_zpso3qu0dsp.jpg

They fixed two corroded connections on their side of the meter and tightened the ground lug in the meter box (technically my side). Problem is resolved. Took all morning.

I did get the core for the burner nozzle ready to go and the perimeter form on and caulked. Maybe I can pour the last tile tomorrow.

IMG_1381_zpsariqnn0x.jpg

The overhead door is ready to install, and I got delivery of 16 ft 2x12's today. My help had to work over and couldn't come out tonight. I was going to get him to help set the 2x12 up 13 ft but with him being a no show I just did it myself. We have several days of rain forecast.

IMG_1383_zpsrsfans0d.jpg

There will be two 2x12's with a 2x4's between them, and the end is nailed to a 2x4 and toenailed to the post.

IMG_1382_zps87jtyu38.jpg

The sheetrock finishers are also finishing the paint booth dab I've been too lazy to finish. I moved the blue car out today to give them room to work and this evening switched places with Miss Vicky. She is a bit shorter and I think they can work with her parked there.

IMG_1386_zpsekq03jlk.jpg

Walking back in the dusk to get the blue car I was admiring it.

IMG_1385_zpsmaotijvi.jpg

Man! I love that car!!:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks for the visits! I need to check the Coke machine, the sheetrockers like it:lol_hitti

That is a very nice car.

Thank you:bowdown:

The newly sheetrock'ed room looks great and I like the plan you have come up with to mold the nozzle inlet in the casting. Not long to go now... just another Saturday or two and you'll be casting like a master.

Thank you, again! I can't seem to get much foundry work done, but the shop build is quickly drawing to a close.

Andy, I for one can not get over your power co supply arrangements in the states, it just leaves me for one.:dunno:

Ours, dare I say it are just so much simpler out here ..

http://www.victoriansir.org.au/

Great progress all round and take care of Miss Vicky for me..

Miss Vicky is happy. She had not started in several weeks. Her battery was down (leave a lady alone and she grows cold and flat) but with a bit of a charge she popped right off and was ready to go out on the town.

I reviewed the self described "Reasonable Technical Requirements" and was expecting a clear and concise technical guide. Electrical supply is much more complicated than I dreamed. Section 2.14 makes it pretty clear that one must meet registration requirements in order to contract for electrical services. So the homeowner cannot contract with a licensed electrician unless the homeowner is registered?

I was quite impressed until I found errors and did not immediately find the error and omission reporting. So disappointed. Maybe you can help me. Section 4.2, third paragraph "have a significant affect on the installation".

Ummm, "have a significant effect on the installation". I'm assuming some readers find this document to be slightly confusing because of the incorrect use of grammar:willy_nil:willy_nil:willy_nil

I have initiated power supply for several new properties, including the distribution system in my 160 acre development and had never seen the comparable document for Indian electric, my combination distributor/retailer. So I looked it up. Please allow adequate time for download.

The utility crew had a weather head, meter box, and 70 amp breakers strapped to their truck. I asked whether it was trash, and they said it was, so they left it:rocker::rocker:

IMG_1387_zpsh0ml6w3z.jpg

And the meter box is cast aluminum!! Nice 1-1/4" pipe!! Antique breaker box!! Copper wire!!!

This morning I framed out the side of the opening to 15 ft from 15 ft 7-1/2" to match the door opening required. 2x6's notched at the top to fit a 2x12 on each side. The original is a 5" post and 2x facing so it's 6-1/2" thick. Two 2x12's are 3" so the distance between them is 3-1/2", a 2x4. 1-1/2" in inset for the inside to lined up for sheetrock or OSB and that leaves only a 1/2" notch on the other side.

IMG_1389_zpsum1vdig5.jpg

2x6's and shims and the opening is ready.

IMG_1392_zps7wxsrz7k.jpg

Then I took a little time to make the external form for creating the burner nozzle area. I needed a 2x6 with an 8-3/8" radius. I marked the radius on the end and made a cut. Stepped the rip fence over one blade width and lowered the blade a hair and made a cut on each side.

IMG_1395_zpsgpugqiza.jpg

Kept stepping and wound up with this

IMG_1396_zpsppwv98wr.jpg

IMG_1397_zpspqhzgciq.jpg

Cleaned it up with a chisel

IMG_1398_zps8krgp6ze.jpg

Then worked it over with a belt sander. Good enough for a form!

IMG_1399_zpsmxpao0xp.jpg

Trimmed off the "legs" left to hold it flat. I had never made a cove in this way before but it worked quite well.

I plan to rip it down the center for use as a form but I need to cut out an opening for a boss to go around the burner cone get far enough out to cast the cylindrical portion of the burner nozzle form piece. It would be hard to cut after ripping, so I ripped into the square area I laid out

IMG_1400_zpslxbum3ae.jpg

And started bandsawing it out

IMG_1401_zpssoabfeiv.jpg

Trimmed, ripped, painted on refractory side and fits quite nicely.

IMG_1402_zpsc370q4xa.jpg

I texted my door installer and let him know the dimensions and clearance of the opening as-built. He surprised me and said he would be here at 11:00 tomorrow! Getting my door tomorrow (maybe, heavy rain forecast, but it is all inside):rocker: My hired man showed up tonight so I set him on framing above the overhead door. I really can't sheetrock it until I cut the sliding doors loose. So we're ready for the new door!

Thanks for looking in, maybe we'll see some refractory poured tomorrow.

Birthday! Who the heck has birthdays when they're old enough to be classified as an artifact? Blow out the candles and go get registered as a historic landmark; maybe you can get a discount on your tax burden? Hope you have many more Andy and stay healthy too. Sorry, I had Wheaties for breakfast; and coffee.

:lol_hitti:lol_hitti That's the best one I've read in a long time.

"Don't ya just love progress!

I saw a sign for me: Start Ya *******!

So I did"

I didn't know you were also a "can whisperer"?? Be careful not all cans are your friends. I recommend that you do not look at a "coke" can.

I'm starting to think there isn't anything you can't do. Now we're finding out that you're capable of creating things out of wood as well as metal.

I've heard that farmers are pretty resourceful people, but I think that rumor comes from someone that followed you around for a few days. Awesome Andy. Hey, I like that...Awesome Andy. yep that's it. Now I can use Lazy Lyndon and not feel like I've hurt your feelings.

Great stuff as usual Awesome Andy.:D

Kind of you to say nice things once in a while!:shocking:

When I started doing woodworking fifty years ago I was intrigued by using jigs and fixtures to do what you could not easily do by hand. Since I could not afford new tools I had as much fun making wooden fixtures as I had making whatever was at hand.

Which brings me to my point: My dad had a saying that goes something like this "never trust a craftsman who complains about the quality of his tools. A true craftsman does exceptional work with worn out tools." That has always stuck with me and helps me avoid buying a tool when I can make do or make one (however inferior) to get a job done. There is a lot of satisfaction for me in making tools. People ask what I do in my blacksmith shop, and I say "mostly make tools" and they don't understand.

When young people use the word "awesome" I like to ask them "Do you regularly engage in the unnecessary use of excessive superlatives? The proper response is, aww some." Just call me Lazy Andy and some days I can exceed you expectations.

Farmers get that bad reputation because they pretty much work alone with limited resources. If you have to run to town to get something fixed you need a real job to pay for it. I think I rehearsed (thanks JB) how I was way off in a little field down a steep "road" through the woods baling hay. The bolts vibrated out of my drawbar and it fell to the ground with the square baler hooked to it. No phone coverage and it took a tractor to get in and out anyway. Four mile walk to the house. 104F (40C) ((Dang Hot)). I drug everything over to a ditch and got the drawbar back up and put about 40 turns of baling wire around the connection where the bolts fell out (swinging drawbar if you have seen a Farmall M). (yes we wire tie square bales here, how do you get by without baling wire?) Load was on the baler tongue making the tractor rear wheels light and it was a challenge to get out of the ditch but it worked well enough to finish baling for a couple of hours. When I got home I really hated to take the wire off:lol_hitti

Thanks again for the nice comments:scared:

Nice of you to stop in JB! Hope your audits go surprisingly well!

Getting any rain?

I tried can whispering and it just blew up in my face. :spit:
JB

I remember that!:headscrat Weren't you just trying to launch new concept in warming paint in direct violation of label warnings?:lol::lol:

Thanks for the visits guys! And the comments, even Dan's!!

Raining cats and dogs here this morning. We'll see what the door installer is made of, if he shows up I'll help in the rain. One thing I liked about refinery work is we would plow on through when it was raining, even if it meant working all day to get shelter set up so we could do some actual work about the time the rain stopped. No matter, if the rain had not stopped we could have continued anyway.

I just love progress! Now it's time to start, ya *******.:bounce:

I really need to get some of that.

So the "Magnet List" continues to grow. We all know that there is a strong "tractor magnet" that draws old autos and tractors straight to Andy's farm. Now we hear that there is a "copper magnet" along with an "aluminum magnet" that can attract random power fixtures. This list seems to grow daily. Now it seems there is less of a reason to go to town as town seems to be drawn to Andy's farm--a piece at a time.
