Andy good to have you back. Not surprised to see how many pages I have had to turn after only a few days of not visiting. It has taken great restraint for me not to pick up the phone. Hospice is incredible. We sat with my dad for his last three weeks without leaving his home but the help and support they gave us, and sharing in your loss, has brought tears to my eyes. We are all truly connected in a special way. Too bad most of us have to get old to realize it. You have just completed your finest build. It took half a lifetime, but what tools you have acquired in this testament to love. Bobby

our door is open, but not sure I have a spot other than the couch cause our daughter and her 4 cats are here for another month until she moves into her new home. that said i'd be happy to meet you for a meal if you are close to us.

SAFE TRAVELS and guessing you are going someplace cold with 2 suitcases cause all you'd need to go to Florida with is your bikini.

BTW remember we know you as OLDIRONFARMER, but we all love ANDY so log on as you are able and we always enjoy your good words.

Reading through the last few pages brought tears to my eyes a couple times. Thank you for sharing Andy. It feels good to read your words again and I'd imagine it feels good to share your world with us again. I know we are all ready when you are for whatever adventures your life brings us through your camera and keyboard !!

2010 FJ Cruiser in my favorite color. 99,880 miles. Looks like new. And they aren't making any more of them. My 2006 already has 129,000 miles.

ANDY: glad you made your winter drive from the west coast back to home safely especially since you were driving a used (new to you) car AND in the middle of winter.

i'm not sure if you saw any of my posts while you were on the road, but it was fun following you down the Oregon Coast that i know pretty well.

summers are the best up here in July and August and sometimes September and if you want to fly in i'm only 8 minutes from our big airport and I'm sure I can find someplace to find a meal. I don't have a fancy VETTE, but depending on when you come my bride has been talking about getting a new car for a few years now to replace her 2005 Honda Crv SE that won't die.

nice to see you posting your own words, but it was kind of fun watching you get information to GRIZZ and he'd post in his words and add a few links of his own.

hoping all was well when you returned and it sure looks like Hershey was happy to see you.

Andy: i'm 2 hours north if you care to take a drive in your new rig. I don't have an extra bed cause my daughter and her 4 cats are in the guest room, but i'm more than happy to buy you some PNW salmon or a steak. OR if you only had time for a quick trip cause you have to get back to the critters i hope you have a safe and pleasant drive cause i'm guessing you will run into a lot of snow and maybe wind going thru Wyoming and the Rockies.

OR if you have time head west about an hour to see the Oregon Coast and Cannon Beach is a great spot to stay.

Rian, this must be Where in the World Is Andy Sandiego. Gargle image search recognized Cape Meares light so Andy is traveling north on the Oregon coast. Not real fast because it's a 50-mile drive from Roads End OR to the Cape Meares light. Looks like Andy is not headed to Crater Lake National Park, which was a possibility with the 4-wheel drive but they've closed the rim drive for the winter (sometimes the park's winter ends in July). Alaska makes sense but 2,400 miles of snowy roads just to get to Fairbanks might be a little stressful.

Really had not thought about going north in the winter. I need you as a travel agent.

Andy's going to be an ice road trucker … woohoo let the drama begin!!!

ANDY & ALL: looks like you maybe were thinking about driving down the oregon coast (yep I'm pretty sure he's traveling south) and to me it's maybe some of the nicest views in the world. also fairly quiet little towns.

that light house is i'm pretty sure in Tillamook (think cheese) or about 20 minutes west of that town if you want to be particular. that cheese factory used to be one of my favorite stops cause it was the only place Tillamook would sell it's root beer float ice cream so 3 scoops of mixed or separated vanilla and root beer on a waffle cone usually was my meal for that day.

not sure Andy is looking at this thread, but Lincoln City has a little restaurant just at the north end of town that has the best marion berry cobbler and some pretty good breakfasts and lunches. Wild Flower is the name of the restaurant. a great place to hang your hat is the Spanish Inn and email me or PM me for some details. lower floors are on the beach and you can lay in bed or sit in a chair and have a great view of some nice big waves.

I'm guessing Andy maybe isn't going to chance driving back over the rockies in January so maybe he's headed to Los Angeles and going along the south of the USA so he can keep his tan in shape and maybe see Don Long?

anyway safe travels old buddy and hope you have a fun trip.

Great advice, Drives! We did stay in Lincoln City and enjoyed a fine meal at McDonald's there. Then we headed north a short way and stopped at Oceanside and viewed the three arches while eating. Then on north to Cape Mears and turned south for good.

ANDY & ALL: I named the town Tillicum after it's cheese factory long ago (Tillamook) so my bad, but i've been to that lighthouse on a cold foggy day and those tall cliffs to the side of it are like they are above the clouds some days.

Andy if you have time the river (jet) boats going up the Rogue River out of Gold Beach are a fun day, but guessing they only go up river during the summer. it's a 100 mile round trip for about a benjamin that takes about 8 hours and you'd see bears, eagles, lots of deer and other critters and LOTS OF TREES.

EDIT: speaking of trees even if you've seen the REDWOODS of Northern California it's always a treat to see those monsters. the Trees of Mystery has a few of the biggest ones in the world so worth a stop if you have time if weather is ok. they also added a tram that takes you to the top of the mountain and over the top of the Redwoods which actually let me know i'm getting afraid of heights. never was cause maybe I thought I was IMORTAL, but surely as I get older some things do change.

The picture sequence of Roads End, Oretown and Cape Meares Light fooled me into thinking Andy was headed north. The Yaquina Bay Bridge is south of all that so he's heading down the coast. It's a beautiful drive and I look forward to seeing more.

Not me for sure. I'm still amazed by the radio and blown away by TV now we have radio, TV, and a camera in a cell phone.

My wife just retired, Nov. 30, 2019 and bought a 2019 Honda CR-V as a retirement gift for herself. She has been driving a 2004 CR-V we bought in 2006.

We go to the library and check out books and books on CD. She got a book on CD to listen to in her new CR-V. Then we realized her new car does'nt have CD player. Everything is blue tooth or WIFI.

She likes the back up camera and the other new to us technology on this car.

I'll give you fair warning. But privately, as my travel agent likes to reveal as we go. Certainly the harbor bridge is much larger if not more picturesque.

RealVC: your story is so close to mine and my bride's it's scary. we bought our 2005 Honda CR-V SE in 2005 and it's got 183,000 on it now. I'd like to buy a new 2020 Honda CR-V, but since it's my bride's car she's been looking at the Accord RDX and now we are looking at electric cars more and Volvo has our eyes and ears cause it might be our last new car cause we may have flying cars in 2040 the next time we buy one.

Andy & ALL: was that the bridge going south from Newport? the Oregon Coast is a very scenic ride and there are only a few spots that are high up like near the Sea Lion Caves and maybe another one that I can't recall. hopefully the other drivers are paying attention cause if we had 30mph winds and driving rain today i'm guessing that maybe it was a bit worse out next to the ocean.

HI, Andy! Sitting here at work eating lunch and going back through your thread since Christmas was so enjoyable. I cried a few tears after your chronicle of Sharon. My Dad seemed much more relaxed when we brought hospice in. Unfortunately, I could not be there in person, at home caring for our sons, but I was on the phone for a few hours doing a face talk which he seemed to enjoy.

So good to see you made it home safely after what looked to be an enjoyable trip! Brought back many memories of a similar trip I made solo by motorcycle in June, 1972, leaving from western Nebraska to Denver to buy a new Triumph , then off to Calgary, Vancouver, San Diego, Phoenix,
New Mexico, Denver ( where I sold the bike back to the dealer I bought it from for almost as much as I paid for it; then he looked at the odometer), picking up my 1966 Chevelle from my cousin's home and driving it back to Gering, NE. Grateful you got a lot of pics, as I took none. Thanks for sharing your ride, every step of the way!

You're right Rian. Progress was a bit spotty. But we finally got that ironed out and started making time.

Andy & ALL: I was pretty sure the Oregon Coast would be looking like that cause we had almost 3 inches of rain up here yesterday. this is usually the time of year we head down to sit in a room and chill and watch the waves and de compress from city life.

Andy since you are maybe taking in more than a few lighthouses i bet you are taking more than few minutes to watch the waves. how big are they?

for those of you that didn't know the Oregon Coast had huge waves the surfing might be better than in California except water is colder. in fact I think those guys that follow those 40+ foot waves around the world used to have a contest this time of year in January off of Lincoln City. i'm not a surfer so i'm not sure why they don't surf there any longer, but I think I heard one of the promoters who was a surfer or maybe a few of the surfers that were able to surf those big ones found death too early in their lives (if anybody knows why either post or PM me).

normally in summer the waves are less than 10 foot and more in the 3-5 foot range. here's a view from one of the rooms we like to stay in and watch maybe January of 2018.

Andy stay safe and hope the roads don't have any landslides or bad drivers to avoid or spoil your adventure. you should be seeing the big Redwoods soon if you aren't there already.

Andy: looks like you are in the Redwoods or at least getting close and maybe still driving down the coastline. I'm not very familiar with California's coastline just like I don't know much about Washington's (not many towns or resorts in our state on the beach).

so I've heard the road south of San Francisco on Highway 1 is maybe not for anyone that has any height issues so your call on taking it or going over to I-5 and then cutting over at Monterey which is on our TO DO LIST for a trip soon. I drove the 17 mile drive there 45 years ago with a friend and still remember it as a great view even if I wasn't a golfer and Pebble Beach or Cypress Point weren't there.

drive safe and hope your weather gets better as you work your way south.

I don't really have any height issues as I'm about 5' 11". I had driven south from San Francisco a few years ago to past Half Moon Bay. After going to Muir Woods (one of my favorite spots on the earth) crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and driving through downtown SF in the evening we stayed in Sunnyvale. The next morning we headed west to San Gregorio. The road over the mountains through La Honda was great. Weather was fine once we hit California.

Well, I guess it's official, then. Andy's the big cheese!

The overlook for the bridge is placed just right. We got there too late and had to take pictures in the approaching gloom. Stayed too long at Muir woods, but what a place. At least my fifth trip there. When I would fly to SF for business I would try to get away a few hours to bask in the solitude of the big trees older than our nation. Puts things in perspective.

looks like you are making nice progress down the coast. if it was me i'd head down Highway #1 even though i'm a bit scared of heights now, but if I had my bride along we'd head down I-5 for a bit and then cut over at Monterey. I heard it takes a few days to see all the Hearst Castle's offerings in case you are headed that way and i've never been and only seen pics of it on TV which looked pretty amazing.

I haven't been south of Oregon or north of Malibu on the coast for about 50 years so looking forward to more pictures and maybe a few good words from our silent host or maybe just a lot more pictures.

ALL: I had a hunch. when I sent Don a text to see if he knew Andy was on our side of the world since I hadn't seen him post in a week or so he informed me the wheels were in motion (litterly).

although it was a little hard to stay quiet while you all had your guesses i'm very happy they are now together. that isn't an easy drive down the coast and in January the road around here are usually wet and it's pouring rain or worse icy and snowing.

Andy, I was hiding in the pine cones. I've been hiding under this pile of sugar pine cones in Sequoia National park since 1955. That's why you didn't smell me. At first I was disappointed that the giant Sequoias had such small cones -- then I found these.

I left it behind. Was distracted by the lovely lady accompanying me. Also, I'm pretty sure it's a plastic handle riveted to the blade and those can loosen up with time. For small saws, I have a couple of those old 4-way keyhole saw frames that I just put fresh blades on.

They are popular here but hideously expensive. A local down the road has 3 of them. One of which is in long term storage and driven every few months to keep it going. He must like them too. Though he prefers the orange ones. I even offered to take the light blue one he has as a daily driver to solve that problem but he already has 2 buyers waiting when he is ready to sell it.

Thanks, JB. Muir Woods is one of my favorite places. It's an humbling place. When I used to meet with Bechtel in SF and could get away for a couple of hours I'd head to the woods.

Andy: is that the TREES OF MYSTERY where you are walking down trails in that Redwood forest?

looks like you are making nice progress down the coast. if it was me i'd head down Highway #1 even though i'm a bit scared of heights now, but if I had my bride along we'd head down I-5 for a bit and then cut over at Monterey. I heard it takes a few days to see all the Hearst Castle's offerings in case you are headed that way and i've never been and only seen pics of it on TV which looked pretty amazing.

I haven't been south of Oregon or north of Malibu on the coast for about 50 years so looking forward to more pictures and maybe a few good words from our silent host or maybe just a lot more pictures.

In spite of Don's recommendation we skipped Hearst's Castle so we'd have time for the King's Big Party Garage.

Thanks, mate. Today is February 5th and I had a good cry. I'm doing well, have great days and bad minutes. I sold all my cattle a few days ago so I could travel. I'm missing them too.

ALL: I had a hunch. when I sent Don a text to see if he knew Andy was on our side of the world since I hadn't seen him post in a week or so he informed me the wheels were in motion (litterly).

although it was a little hard to stay quiet while you all had your guesses i'm very happy they are now together. that isn't an easy drive down the coast and in January the road around here are usually wet and it's pouring rain or worse icy and snowing.

What great fun to have my car on Don's lift. We were going to replace the serpentine belt because it had looked bad when I bought the car and picked up a belt and tools for the drive. In the light in his shop it looked good so we skipped that task and just checked out the car.

Don knows his cars, I can tell you.

It was marvelous weather. I've lived in the Mojave Desert and in Orange County. We had a chilly morning which was perfect.

It's true Old Iron Farmer was spotted in So. Ca. at the party garage

He called me a few days ago and said he was planing a trip driving down the west coast and asked if I were up for a visit.
He showed up just before noon on Thursday and we spent the entire day wandering around the yard, the garage and my shop. We went to dinner Thursday evening then spent the rest of the evening sharing old life stories. He spent the night and this morning we pulled the Toyota into the shop and gave it a full inspection.

He said that the ride in my corvette was great!!!

What a great host! What a great hostess!! What a great time!!!

The Corvette is fantastic but the ride was a little short. I almost had the passenger window crank off for a souvenir when we got back. That would have been so cool!

What a great update of our traveling Andy.

Andy: I just looked at the map and you are making great time on the road in that new (to you) yellow machine. i've never driven east of Phoenix on the highways down in that part of the USA, but I did fly to Albuquerque and spend a few days there with my family and found Sante Fe was a nice place to spend a day.

My caboose is a Santa Fe, you know.

so maybe sleeping back in your own bed tomorrow evening?

did you avoid snow and bad weather or have more than your share of wind and some snow taking that road home? from the pics it looks like summer down there.

hope you enjoyed your Saturday and even though today is a rest day I bet you'll make the best of it getting back home.

No wind after we got away from the PNW and no snow. We got lucky. Flagstaff is high in the mountains and there was snow on the ground but only a few slick spots to try out the four wheel drive. Yes, they will all spin at once.

Oh Andy! I'm so jealous. A trip down the Pacific Coast Highway, The giant sequoia trees, a stop at "The Big Party Garage" and then the Hoover Dam, you are living my bucket list

The Big Party Garage was the highlight of the trip. Those big trees are pretty cool too.

I need to make a "kick my bucket list".

Progressively starting to look familiar

A hundred miles from home. FJ has another 2,500+ miles on it. Sounds like a perfect test drive.

We actually hit just over 3,000 miles by the time we got to the airport to get FJ Yellow #1 and then home.

Sitting here grinning at the trip Bob.

We do behave like kids, but I would not change it.

My traveling companion complains I'm 17 years old, but still enjoys the wild rides.

When we finally got the pair together it was great fun. It is such fun going down the road seeing the other one either in front or behind you.

Yesterday we took the new one to buy more keys. Since the keys and car have to be programmed we drove both. When we walked into the dealer a service manager came up laughing:

'We were excited to see two yellow FJ's pull in and then we realized they are together. Very cool!'

ANDY: glad you made your winter drive from the west coast back to home safely especially since you were driving a used (new to you) car AND in the middle of winter.

I've driven junkers all my life. I suppose if I could afford new ones I'd buy them but I get lucky.

i'm not sure if you saw any of my posts while you were on the road, but it was fun following you down the Oregon Coast that i know pretty well.

summers are the best up here in July and August and sometimes September and if you want to fly in i'm only 8 minutes from our big airport and I'm sure I can find someplace to find a meal. I don't have a fancy VETTE, but depending on when you come my bride has been talking about getting a new car for a few years now to replace her 2005 Honda Crv SE that won't die.

Old Hondas never die, they just find new owners.

When I can afford another car I might just come see you. Have you seen the prices of those round trip tickets? Two times as much as a regular ticket.

nice to see you posting your own words, but it was kind of fun watching you get information to GRIZZ and he'd post in his words and add a few links of his own.

hoping all was well when you returned and it sure looks like Hershey was happy to see you.

I've always toyed with the idea of a fleet. Farmall tractors are cheaper than FJ Cruisers, though.

HI, Andy! Sitting here at work eating lunch and going back through your thread since Christmas was so enjoyable. I cried a few tears after your chronicle of Sharon. My Dad seemed much more relaxed when we brought hospice in. Unfortunately, I could not be there in person, at home caring for our sons, but I was on the phone for a few hours doing a face talk which he seemed to enjoy.

Thank you very much. I am so glad we could all be there.

So good to see you made it home safely after what looked to be an enjoyable trip! Brought back many memories of a similar trip I made solo by motorcycle in June, 1972, leaving from western Nebraska to Denver to buy a new Triumph , then off to Calgary, Vancouver, San Diego, Phoenix,
New Mexico, Denver ( where I sold the bike back to the dealer I bought it from for almost as much as I paid for it; then he looked at the odometer), picking up my 1966 Chevelle from my cousin's home and driving it back to Gering, NE. Grateful you got a lot of pics, as I took none. Thanks for sharing your ride, every step of the way!

I'm practicing standing on my head and when I think I can tolerate the blood rush to my head I'm booking a flight to take a small driveabout.

Andy, I was hiding in the pine cones. I've been hiding under this pile of sugar pine cones in Sequoia National park since 1955. That's why you didn't smell me. At first I was disappointed that the giant Sequoias had such small cones -- then I found these.

I guess that explains it, Bob. You need to get the Deep Woods Off of you.

I was browsing in a vintage shop today and this made me think of our handy host.

I actually had someone send me a Handy Andy tool set a while back.

My apologies to whomever it was. I have a very good memory it's just not very long.
