Just a quick update.

Not a whole lot has been going on in the garage. Mainly I've been cleaning, sorting papers, and throwing **** away that is in the house. I wish I could just load it all up and throw it away somedays. But, it's a bunch of stuff I should keep and a lot of it is just shifting through it all like photos, documents, thumb drives, SD cards, and so on that never got properly labeled and organized. Heck, Christmas stuff is still in the living room because I refuse to just shove 60% of the totes back in the garage cause these totes was never used during the decorating of the house. So, why are we hoarding it!!!
Needless to say, I'm still knee deep in the purging.

Anyway, we adopted a cat from the animal shelter. Her name was Brown Sugar when I got her(Wife thought it was a stripper's name), but now she's called Hailey. She's been a very nice cat, still getting use to the house. My youngest one has instantly bonded with her and wants her around all the time. She has similar traits that Friskie had, except Hailey don't seem to talk. She's a very quite cat. It's been a little under a month and I noticed she has been exploring the house on her own the past two weeks and she now comes upstairs in the hallway and will actually stand around the two dogs of ours. So, she's coming out of her shell. Her face looks like she's pissed all the time, but she's very loving and affectionate. Can't judge a book by its cover when it comes to Hailey.

Part of the cleaning process, I finally got around to hanging up a shoulder mount that was my Dad's in the office. It resides over my desk in the computer room. It's hard to see, but the right antler has a drop tine of 8" long. He was pretty proud of this deer since it's his first one with a drop tine. He had 6 more shoulder mounts, but I only kept this one.

IMG_8395.jpeg

While installing the hitch on the new Subaru, I noticed these gold marks. Closer look and I saw that every welded joint was marked with this gold paint. I guess that's their quality control, but i never noticed that on other vehicles. Then again I only had one new vehicle in my life before this Subaru.

IMG_8428.jpeg

Yesterday I finally got something done on the Camaro. I got the rear seat covered and got them installed with the new seat belts. I had to add some new padding to the existing foam. I tried fluffing it up some with the upholstery steamer, but I guess it was as fluffed as it was going to get since it didn't fluff a whole lot. But, it did feel softer after I used the steamer on it, as before the foam was very stiff.

Photos of the seat before,

IMG_8493.jpeg
IMG_8494.jpeg

And after the recover and installed in the Camaro.
IMG_8613.jpeg

Overall, I'm pleased with the results.

Now I need to get the shifter setup with the neutral switch and also restore the console before I can even think about installing the front seats when they get recovered.

Hey Marc, OutlawDrifter, I meant to tell ya. I used your idea for burning the holes in the carpet, but I didn’t have any black iron pipe laying around. So, I used this 3/4” copper tubing and heated it up with a propane torch. Did the job very nicely!
IMG_8614.jpeg

Only downside is the smell of the burning carpet! 🔥🤢

One of the parts I’ve been waiting for finally came in after a 3 months waiting period. This is a 1970 Hurst Oldsmobile neutral safety switch. They used the dual gate shifter as some of y’all know, but they didn’t offer this same switch setup for the aftermarket dual hurst shifters. So I had to make the mounting plate. In this prototype setup the safety switch works in park and neutral, but I question the reverse light part of the switch. Seems like it has to come back alittle further then what the gear selector plate says it should. I’ll have to wait til I mount it back in the car and install the new shifter cable. But at least I’m on the right track to get this shifter installation wrapped up!

IMG_8624.jpeg
IMG_8625.jpeg
IMG_8626.jpeg

Once I get the final alignment I’ll finish welding up the bracket parts and I’ll apply blue lock tite on all of the screws.

Seat came out great!

I didn't use heat on mine, just a really sharp edge on the pipe to cut through. But I'm sure the heat made a difference in "sealing" up the area around the hole.

Probably no progress in the garage this weekend. I have been dealing with planter fasciitis the past month. Yesterday I tried to play alittle basketball with the youngest and ended up hitting the inflamed tendon just right to make me stop and wanted to ball up in a fetal position. I got a doctor appointment today and she gave me a cortisone shot, taped my foot up and told me to stay off it for 4-6 days. Luckily I do have a class online tomorrow from 9-4, but I might either sneak out to the garage and just sit in my chair while working on little stuff. Wonder if I can convince the wife to be a gopher for a little while in the garage?

When I had my Planter Fasciitis flare up a couple years ago my podiatrist Dr was very helpful, told me all I needed was a cortisone shot and I’d be good as new. I was very enthusiastic about the possibility of not being all hobbled up, so I asked him if that shot went in my arm or maybe in my rear. When he poked me right in the arch of my foot and said “right here” I told him that the day I came into his office with ****** knees and elbows cuz the pain was so high I couldn’t walk was the day he’d get to shove a needle into my foot! Did I mention I hate Doctors and needles yet?! You are a better man than I……

I wouldn’t say I was a better man, I knew what to expect with the shot since I have dealt with this about 8 years ago. Only problem was it took 1-2years for it to go away. So I got multiple shots, sometime it hit that bone and it hurt so damn bad I wanted to rip the arms off that chair.

Hence why I tried everything for a month before I finally broke down and got the shot. I didn’t want to do the shot, and like before it was very painful regardless of the freeze spray she used on the foot. 😳🫨🫨😢

Now I can’t sleep and I suspect it’s the cortisone shot that’s keeping me up. 😡

So last Saturday it actually accumulated some snow around the house. This is looking outside the office window at home.
IMG_8663.jpeg

Then it disappeared in 3 days.

I got these gas cans from trash day, so I ordered new spouts and got them all cleaned up

IMG_8706.jpeg

Then I hooked an electric pump to the camaro fuel line to the tank so I can drain the tank since the fuel was 2-3 years old.
IMG_8707.jpeg

I’ll burn the fuel in lawnmowers and such since it looks good but just old for the camaro. Almost 12-15gallons worth.
IMG_8708.jpeg

Worked on the wiper switch lense lettering. I think I’m close to getting it done. I did a few test pieces using a vinyl cutter machine called a Cricut. So far this has been the only valuable thing the machine has made for me.

IMG_8722.jpeg

I picked the best one and test fitted it. I think I’m going to remove the line under wipe as it looks out of place. The H on HI is alittle messed up too. These little letters are a pain in the **** to apply so I can understand why others didn’t want to do this project.
IMG_8726.jpeg
IMG_8729.jpeg

I had to cut the mount that I repaired for the wiper switch and move it so I’m waiting for the epoxy to set on the relocated tab. Once it set I’ll take it back apart and fix the lenses before glueing it to the switch.

Other then that, I’m just just staying warm and off my foot as much as possible.

Did a little work in the garage.

First thing I did was took the tool bag from the van and weeded out tools that I didn’t need for the new Subaru Outback and put some new tools for Subaru related items in the collection. Then I took these two tool rolls and put all of the tools in them so they will fit better under the rear floor mats. Only thing I’m missing is jumper cables, a jump pack, and some toilet paper(you just never know).
IMG_8780.jpeg

Then I put the new crankshaft pulley on the camaro and started measuring for new belts. Went to the store and got two belts and came back home to find they were too big. So I went back and got two more belts and came home to find they were too small. 😡 So I just ordered online two more belts that was between the two sizes I tried as I’m not gonna be able to mess with the camaro for a couple of days anyway.
IMG_8789.jpeg

So I moved onto the shifter and installed the new shifter cable and put the shifter back in the camaro. Apparently the old shifter cable was stuck, couldn’t even move it with a pair of pliers! Don’t know what happened but the new one moves a lot easier. So while hooking up the shifter cable on the transmission I had to move the cable bracket and also swap out linkage on the transmission. Seems my geometry was all off with the old position. My concern is there is only one bolt holding the cable brace on the transmission, I recall this was how the previous owner had the brace on the th400 also. It’s solid but I would feel better if I had two bolts on it. But, I’m missing the little stub that the cable rides on the linkage I just installed on the transmission. So I ordered that online. Maybe the new brace in the kit will allow two bolts to be used, we will see.
IMG_8790.jpeg

IMG_8788.jpeg
IMG_8787.jpeg

At least I made some progress even if I wasted time drive back and forth to the store for v-belts. Now I understand why old timers just kept assortments of v belt lengths in the garage.

A common cause for sticky shift cables is a poor or missing ground strap causing the starter current to flow through the cable assembly and weld itself. Make sure you have several heavy ground straps.
The transmission bracket for the shift cable differs between the thm350 and the thm400. You could try to find the 400 bracket, or weld on enough steel to reach another bolt.

I've heard about how the current would use the shifter cable as a ground strap before. I have plans to re-install 2 thick ground cable to the engine and frame and then include one for the body to the frame. The ground cable was taken off after I got the body painted because I needed to reroute the ground cables. The old shifter cable was atleast 25 years old, and I'm sure it's older as it came with the car back in 1997. I took it out of the car and placed it on a shelf right after I got the car and never really messed with it since. I suspect it was just gummed up and rusted on the inside of the cable sleeve and with the recent bending of the cable was the last straw for it.

I'll look into finding a th400 specific bracket, the kit I just ordered said it was for a th350 and th400 along with other models, but it does look like the same bracket I currently have now. I might just weld a short strip of metal to it and drill a hole to install the 2nd bolt if the new bracket is the same as the old one.

Little progress tonight.

So the new belts came in the mail today and the belt for the power steering was too big. I started looking closer at the bracket and figured I’d take the bolt off the water pump to move the steering pump bracket pass the water pump. This allowed the power steering pump to come in a little more. Then the belt that was almost right but was too tight, was now able to slip over the pulleys and was just right once I bolted the brackets back in their place. But of course the ac belt is still wrong. Apparently I need a 58.5” belt, but I only got a 58” and a 59” belt in my new collection. 🤦🏻‍♂️
So I ordered a new belt since I can’t find one locally.

Then worked on the shifter and I was able to get the shifter connected to the transmission. I ended up using the old shifter barrel to attach the cable to the lever on the transmission. But first I had to tap the hole that the cable need to be attached to.
IMG_8817.jpeg

Then I was able to screw the barrel piece to the lever. I put the nut on the back side to lock it in place.

IMG_8819.jpeg
Seems it’s shifting as it’s supposed to and going in all the gears nicely. Now I just need to clean it up and maybe add a new bolt hole to the cable bracket. Still haven’t made up my mind.

Then I terminated the neutral wiring and reverse light wiring with the correct plugs and plugged it in. Now I need to remove the bracket and finish it up by installing the missing screw and then paint it.
IMG_8816.jpeg
Then I brought the console in the house to give it a bath. Since I turned the water off going to the garage, I had to come in the house to wash it.

IMG_8820.jpeg
IMG_8822.jpeg

Left the console in the tub to air dry.

I’ll take it to the garage tomorrow and I’ll start repairing it and prepping it for dye.

Not too bad of a day, just wish I had the right belt for the AC compressor. 🤦🏻‍♂️🙄

I would bet you've got a little time before you "need" that AC belt

Shifter seems to be all falling into place, glad you were able to make it work. If I could redo the work on my car, I would have left it an automatic and found the 3rd gen specific dual gate shifter.

🤣😂🤣

Yea I don’t need the ac right now. But just trying to finalize the ac brackets before I take them off and powder coat them and by that I mean spirtzsssss. Sssss, spritzssssss 😁

You and me both, I’m glad I’m starting to see the lights at the end of the shifter tunnel.

Another foot doctor visit today and another cortisone shot. This time she did an ultrasound therapy treatment on it. It felt better after the ultrasound but then she proceeded to stick my heel with that needle, pulled back and forward afew times to spread the liquid in the heel area.
So, the reduction of pain was mute after the shot.

I need some of those tapes, pad, and tape spray so I can tape my foot up at home, it helps putting my foot in tension with a pad in the arch.

IMG_8831.jpeg

Maybe tomorrow I’ll get a little garage time.

So I spent some time playing with my coin collection and also incorporating my dad's coins into my collection. I got a few coin holders coming in the mail to put most of these in a book instead of being loose in the butter bowl.
IMG_8838.jpeg

I found this in Dad's coins collection. Apparently it's a Draft Exemption pin from the WW1 based on some google searches that also had documents for the draft exemption. Basically, if you are more valuable to stay in the US ( large family depends on you, in a manufacture that supports the war effort, ETC) or failed the physical, instead of being drafted, they would give these pins to you. It's to keep other people from beating you up basically if they think you're just being a draft dodger.
IMG_8840.jpeg

I don't know of anyone in the family that didn't go to the war when drafted so I suspect he just found it.

Got to love the silver coins, I always check my coins from my pockets for any silver ones.
IMG_8853.jpeg

Got a little bit of garage time this weekend.

I ordered a different manufacture driver side door glass cause I was tired of fighting the one I currently had. Once I laid the new glass on top of the other new glass I could tell I was in the right direction. The first glass I tried was curved too much toward the inward and so the glass wouldn't go in the channel at the top. Once I had the new AMD glass installed and about 10 mins of adjusting, the new glass fits perfectly! So much wasted till on that damn junk of an OER glass. I doubt I will get my money back as I've had this glass for 3 years at least. IMG_8860.jpeg

IMG_8861.jpeg

I worked on the console and got it ready for dye/paint.

Before SEM plastic/vinyl dye,
IMG_8870.jpeg

After the dye/paint.
IMG_8871.jpeg

It was still wet during the photos, but this morning it had a nice low luster sheen like the other plastic parts I've dyed/painted.

The foot has been doing good, but I'm trying to keep off it while to hopefully help it heal better. Hence why i was playing with my coin collection.

Tonight is trash night so I'll be doing some cleaning and throwing junk away. I'm still undecided on how I want to handle the OER door glass, do I try to get my money back(which i doubt will happen) or just get it out of my sight/way.

My vote is to recyle/dispose of. Not worth your time or effort. Love the coins...BTW, anything minted by the US after 1964 (not including 1964) is going to be non-silver coinage....and only dimes, quarters, 1/2 dollars, and dollars are silver.
I ended up throwing the glass away. After talking to an OER rep I could tell it was going to cost me more than it was worth.

You're right about the coins, the nickels are in the collection due to being old and buffalo style. I usually scan the edges of my coins to weed out silver ones, cause like you most likely know the non-silver coins has a copper color layer in the middle of the ridges which makes them cladded style. I found a silver dime in a parking lot last year. I'm always scanning the ground for coins so I felt lucky when I came across the silver dime.

You were in Vegas!
Sterling, I was born in Douglas Arizona 1.8 miles from the border and was almost a ******* (my parents were in Agua Prieta when mom went into labor). Didn't stay long (dad was teaching meteorology to pilots at the Army Air Corps base). The little house they lived in at 1241 [E 6th] Green Street was torn down and replaced in 2000 with another small home. There are homes in Douglas selling for less than $50K.

Mark, we visited Las Vegas on our 1955 trip. I got change from a souvenir purchase and the change included two silver dollars. Having no idea they were rare, I spent them on something stupid that same summer.
As kids we just don't think about money. I'm sure to most of us it was cool toys to throw in wishing wells, lay pennies on train tracks, and great ways to spend time at the arcade!

The silver dollars I have are probably worth more in their melted state then in collection value due to how worn they are from being circulated. But, for me they are sentimental valued too due to my Grandma ran the convenience stores in Kermit. So, when she came across some unique coins she would give them to me or Dad. The 2 in the plastic holders I suspect Dad bought them at a coin/gun show one time. He showed them to me, and I thought they were cool at the time. It's possible they are valuable, but I honestly have no way to find out and I don't care to sell them. Only concern i have is when i pass, nobody else will know what they are and the value of them. Seems nobody takes an interest in the coins like I do in the family, so I can see how digital money will happen very easily in this country. I might find a coin dealer locally that could value them for me just so I can add it to the Porfilio or more as I call it, "What to Do when Cody Pass" folder.

Weird as a place the desert land is, it's a great way to study weather and sky patterns. Also a great place to find meteorites as they were littered all over west Texas area. Apparently, they are valuable but yet me and my friend were picking up Iron Meteorites by the buckets when we were camping in Mentone, Tx area.

With regard to coins, since I have taken up metal detecting, I am more concerned about coin values than I used to be. If you pick up a copy of "The Official Red Book - a Guide Book of United States Coins", you will find they have a fairly easy to understand guide to grading and values of coins. Personally, I have sold a lot of 90% silver coins over the years for the silver melt value, but only after considering the grading. I retain a few coins in very good condition that I just like the looks of, or were passed down from my Dad's collection. Having a copy of that book in your collection will provide some guidance to your heirs.

Cody, I'm in the same boat. My brother and I collected stamps when we were kids. I focused on US stamps but ****'s collection was worldwide. A decade or so ago I tried looking up the value of his collection and the first few pages had more than $100 worth of stamps on each one (if I rated them in poor condition). The book is about three inches thick and only covers stamps up to 1963.
Stamp Collection 1.jpg Stamp Collection 2.jpg
My mother spent a few years adding stamps after she retired in 1976. She still had one small suitcase full of loose stamps.

I suspect you, like me, are reluctant to have the collection appraised, expecting the most valuable items to mysteriously disappear when the collection is returned.

Bob, we had my Grandfather's stamp collection appraised by 3 different companies, 2 only appraised the ones they would cherry pick out of the collection...the third appraised them all ($850K, when it was all said and done), the offer to buy all was around 50% of the value. He had been buying and collecting stamps since the 1930's, he had one of the first hand cancelled US Stamps in the collection. Who would have thought it was a savings account(he knew).

Marc, the gentleman living across the street from us on Long Island was a stamp dealer so my brother had a constant supply of stamps. The man gave my brother the wholesale family member price on the sets. Like a lot of the trivia he stored in his mind, he was able to go through a pile of stamps and quickly sort out the ones he didn't have in his collection.

I guess I better get my A$$ in gear and have the collection appraised and perhaps convert it into larger pieces of paper.

No hijack i see here!
But, i got some stamps but I doubt many of them are worth anything. Probably the confederate stamps I have is the only real value in the bunch. The rest was post marked bundles I bought though the magazines/comic, and the stamps from the post offices with the celebration pages with the stamp in the middle of the pages.

Did it cost anything for the appraisal of the stamps?

With regard to coins, since I have taken up metal detecting, I am more concerned about coin values than I used to be. If you pick up a copy of "The Official Red Book - a Guide Book of United States Coins", you will find they have a fairly easy to understand guide to grading and values of coins. Personally, I have sold a lot of 90% silver coins over the years for the silver melt value, but only after considering the grading. I retain a few coins in very good condition that I just like the looks of, or were passed down from my Dad's collection. Having a copy of that book in your collection will provide some guidance to your heirs.

I'll see about getting a copy of that book! At least it will give me a small idea of the coins worth myself.

looking up coin appraisers in the area, I found several in my own city. Only thing is they will charge $100 an hour to appraise the collection. I'm pretty confidence they can appraise my little collection in 20 mins unless they get really detailed and spend a full hour on the small coin collection of mine. If I was to take the coins, I would just pick the silvers, plastic cased, and anything older than 1964. I'd say I would have about 40 coins at the most to take.

You would think installing a console would be quick and easy, but this one gave some challenges. Either way I got it in and all secured. Thinking I should polish the shifter knob. Dad bought it back in 1982 to put in his Ford truck when mom pulled the shifter out of the column. He got a floor shift for a three speed and this knob. I got the shifter but I wanted the knob to go in the camaro.

Fired up ol’Red and brought the truck out of the garage for a stretch. Need to put a battery tender on the truck cause the battery was a little weak after sitting for a month.

I had to play with my little action figures that my youngest got me for Christmas!

I finished adjusting the door glass and was tighten all of the bolts to get ready to put the weather vapor on. Had to stop there for the day since we had dinner at the in-laws. Maybe tomorrow I’ll get the vapor on and the door panel installed.

Cody,

Didn't want to hijack @Bob Heine thread about food, but I have to ask you if you have ever been to Moio's Bakery? During our last foray through Pittsburgh it was a required stop....
SI i have, it was a highlight of mom's trip up here where they are the best creme filled creme horns or as the local call it, Lady Lock. But, I also enjoy the germany chocolate cake there. Now, there's a couple of competition around here that does other things better than Moio's, but those lady locks are the best in my opinion. Moio's is also located about 2 miles from my house so, yea I stop to get one every 2 months. If i let myself go I'd never fit in the camaro.

My mom and cousin use to enjoy the cookies so much that they would stock up on them before going back to Texas back in the days, lol.

Now, there is a bakery called Oakmont Bakery that I heard puts Moio's to shame, and I have to admit the cakes I've tried from Oakmont are really good. But, I've never been there personally, just sampled what others bring to get togethers and what they tell me about the place. Then there's a local donut shop on the way to a lake I fish often that has fresh taste donuts that's a requirement to pick up some to bring home for the family.

Bread is a big hit up here and so cake, donuts, and pastry falls in line with their specialty.

Oakmont Bakery is way overrated, not as good as of years past. Just got to big, has industrial like production

So recently I was driving around checking out what folks were putting out for trash day and I spotted a huge pile of stuff. I was able to get 2 mowers, folding table, plastic storage shelves, 18V ryobi weed wacker, and an electric McCulloch chainsaw. I got the shelves and the table for my wife for her cricut stuff. The Toro mower starts up with a shot of starting fluid, and the craftsman pushmower fired up with no help, looks brand new so that's nice to resale. The ryobi trimmer will go on the wall with the Dewalt since i have Ryobi batteries, and the electric chainsaw will go on the wall also for cutting wood inside the garage if I have to, as it works like a champ just need the chain sharpened.

Started cleaning off the camaro parts shelves, and I found several things that I was looking for awhile back. All I can think of is that the one plug I was looking for that cost me $80 and I just found it in the pile of wires I forgot about, DOH!
IMG_8916.jpeg

Because of all of this talk about Moio's bakery I stopped by yesterday and got a Lady Lock. I guess the economy has taken a hit there as the lady lock was a little smaller and it was $3.75 for one and not the normal $2.25 for one. It was still good, just wish the size hadn't changed with the price. I'll pay more, but the reduction is size kinda turned me off.

Last Night I got the driver side door ready, put the vapor barrier on the door and started the process of making the aftermarket door panel fit the door. Overall it wasn't too bad, just time consuming since I had to cut the openings for everything. The next time I pull the door off, I'm going to adjust the mirror knob bezel some more as it was a little crocked but I didn't know it til I had the door panel fasten in place. But overall it does look good!

Then I finished up the modification to the wheelchair carrier, I went ahead and installed retractable ratchet strap to make it easier for my wife and me when we loaded up the MIL scooter. When it's not being used for the scooter I can now use it for trash day rummage for lawnmowers when I take the forester instead of the truck.

So, that's been most of this week's highlight projects.
