Okay so as far as overhead outlets for lighting, are you planning to switch the ones in the middle separately from the ones along the wall? Nothing wrong with that just clarifying.

You're going to want two 240V outlets on separate breakers, one for the compressor and one near the back corner for welders (better location imho). You don't want the compressor kicking on during a weld and popping the breaker. Both outlets can be mounted down low to make more available wall space, they'll just stay plugged in all the time.

I don't know how a missed this, but are there any windows? Natural lighting is 10x better than artificial, definitely worth considering adding some at least on the side facing the house and maybe the back wall. And I know you said you didn't want windows in the garage doors, but I'd reconsider that also, it's really nice getting that extra light in and easy enough to make some shades for them.

If you're planning on using Wall Control just pay attention to the outlet spacing so they hit in between groups of panels.

I don't know what door height you need to clear your truck, the door bottom might hang a few inches below the opening, so watch for that. If you need a taller 8' or 9'H door you may also want high lift tracks so the door and opener will clear with plenty of room inside, however don't get closer than about 6" to the ceiling, any less and clearance for light fixtures starts becoming a concern.

Go ahead and plan your box locations for exterior lighting and flood/motion lights as well. I wouldn't suggest an exterior outlet, but you may want that too.

Yes, ceiling outlets along the walls will be on their own switches.

I'll put in another 240 in the back corner.

No regular windows. Marie wanted windows in the doors, so all three doors will have windows of some sort.

My plan is to do the work bench outlets at a height where the wall control is above them.

Clearance height on the truck is 6'6" I believe. Got in and out of parking garages with 6'8" clearances. I think ours will be 7'.

Good call on planning box location for ext lighting...I'll have to get the contractor to install those so the siding is done right around them. Wasn't planning on an ext outlet.

Pretty nice layout IMO. Here are a few questions/ideas for you as I'm working through some of this in my shop layout:

  1. Are all of the 'outlets' on the ceiling dedicated for lighting fixtures? If so, you may want a couple extra to plug in ceiling mounted cord reels
  2. If a jackshaft style garage door opener is a possibility for you, make sure you add an outlet for those on the wall near the garage door shafts. If this is the case, I would still add the outlet for traditional ceiling mount openers in the event you decide to switch.
  3. I would consider a few 'up high' outlets for cool neon/LED signs or a TV.

Keep us posted!

I have those laid out as duplex outlets and I'll have one light plugged in at each location so there will be one spare outlet at each location for stuff to be plugged in.

I'm planning on jackshaft style so there are outlets in place there. Good idea on putting one in place for a normal opener as well in case a future owner wants a normal one.

Might have to add some up high outlets too. Good idea! I do have one neon sign I'll need to hang...

Thanks for the ideas!

If you don't want skunks under your deck pee around it . . . if you are in an area where you can't do that put some pee in a spray bottle and 'spritz' around. I had one under a shed - don't have that problem anymore.

.22 works well too of course . . .

Funny thing about that is we have two Chocolate Labs and their favorite place to pee is not far from the deck. So that should keep them away. Apparently that doesn't bother rabid skunks tho.

Sweet!

Question from this construction newbie (Me.) Since your pad is all one slab with no foundation 'stem wall", can I assume that the entire thing is level with no slope towards the front?

pretty much, yes. you can see how there are some slight puddles there where the water from the wet cure is still sitting. if it had a real slope, that would have all just run off the front. They did put a bit of a bevel on the front where the garage doors will be to help with rain, but nothing inside.

Updated the plan with "high up" outlets, outlets for standard garage doors, and another 240.

I also did one for ext lighting. One on each 2' section on the front, one by the man door, one at the peak in the center between the garage and house, and one in the center on the back for a flood light over the yard.5cc3db902f75b7334bab231766524623.jpgfb9fa13a45942b48836830c0bebf867e.jpg

Looking good! Can't wait to see it in person.

Hey this probably isn't something that's even on your radar, but I've been looking into a garage divider curtain and these guys seem to have what I need, if you're going to be doing any dirty work making sawdust or metal filings it might be worth looking into closing off the single bay. I believe the cost worked out to around $400 for a 26' curtain for my place.

Why install receptacles for lights? Why not wire the lights in directly? I never understood the premise of this.

Flexibility and extra outlets if you need them for fans, drop cords, whatever. You would need a junction box at each fixture anyway, might as well throw a receptacle in it and be able to reconfigure your lighting however you want. Plus you can run two fixtures off each box, so half the boxes required.

We had something like that on a couple of bays when I worked at the Harley store. They seemed to work pretty well!

More flexibility and ease of change. It also allows for a regular outlet for a retractable extension cord or whatever other ceiling mounted powered gadget might need to go in at some point in the future.

They got all the tyvek up, did some assembly on the gable ends and that's as far as they'll be able to get until the crane comes...which won't be until Thursday. So they won't be doing anything tomorrow but will resume at 6:30am Thursday.

Also, siding was delivered today.d59f177d9717f4c6b1c78fdafcc12af6.jpg4b5b6c962a8599431d18d8c3bb509eae.jpg774a3f34c9b5dc380b41b3f11a28f10f.jpge5a86765ad6908eefcaeb6f4e66c150b.jpg10135f7250cb8d466fa2f85aac3fa3a0.jpgb3a2ceb76d229e15239bcfb8cbc66142.jpgd1de86ddabd921a771b11d8d01ad6660.jpg826e193d2b99dffdd514f5ee80dc3027.jpg0a87216e27293483bb53b6a2ded0a95c.jpg

Looks great!
The siding doesn’t appear to be very long panels, make sure you tell them to have the seams lapped away from when you approach the garage. You would think people would do that all the time..... but sometimes they forget or get lazy and don’t do it.

You didn’t want the garage siding to match the house? Or is it just weird lighting?

It's weird lighting. The color is very close. This is the photo he sent of the sample he got being held up against the house.

All trusses are up. Looks like they started on the sheathing then called it for the day. I'm assuming they worked until the storms picked up. Don't wanna be working on a roof in electrical storms...24545469ce1f26a6b91f0cc9fe367791.jpg95f9a7675f2f853ff4cacdfbed8ebb62.jpg71c10988c0c709d93831792d5a5fe264.jpg

I hear what you are saying, thunderstorms and rain tends to put a damper on everything, even golf.

Looking good so far, keep the pictures coming.

It's more of a car port at the moment. Needs doors.

I need to see if I can piggyback electrical off this same building permit or if I have to get a separate one. The builder is only doing framing and exterior. I'm gonna do electrical. Hopefully I can use the existing permit. I'll have to try to find out. I had planned to wait a bit to save up some cash but decided to cash in these EE savings bonds I got as a kid that are growing at a snail's pace could be put to better use in the form of wiring haha.

Wow, good weather = good progress!

Is the builder going to regrade your driveway to match the garage, or will you have to do that?

They'll fill in around the building. I think they'll end up getting another load of gravel to polish things up around front there and kind of build up to the slab. They won't do any bulk grading or anything. I may just have them deliver a few extra tons of gravel because I'm gonna need it for when we finish up moving that retaining wall to expand the driveway. We're gonna rent a mini excavator for that so between the bucket and lil blade, should be able to make it work fine.

Going to start working on a petition to get the road paved...we may end up paving the driveway after that.

Talked to the electrician this evening. Planning to meet up with him one evening next week to review circuit design and discuss any code stuff I'm not already aware of.
