There is lots of hammertone paints available in spray cans. If one only does some searching there is a whole new world out there.

http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=29

http://www.tcpglobal.com/autobodydepot/hamrustcap.aspx?gclid=CPDX1pmr1KECFQ4NDQodI3kc2Q

and even many additional surface finishes.

Local K-Mart use to carry the hammertones as well as many textured (wrinkle [light, medium and heavy], matte plus the multi color heavy texture paint common in automobile trunks 'back in the day'. The trunk paint (as I call it - because I don't remember the proper name) came in 3 or 4 predominate colors (gray, green, tan/brown and the ever popular black & white).

wasn't much, but I like hand wrenching anyway....someone stole it along with about $30k of other personal belongings last year (I took a hard $5k hit to my tools and about $3k to computer stuff due to caps on my policy).

It was a Craftsman 165psi model...not much for continuous duty but was pretty quiet and great for blowing stuff off and an occasional hard bolt.

My next will be a full on sand blast capable model in an add-on behind my shop.

I can relate. I was looking on the internet to see if I could find touchup paint for my green Espadrille. Couldn't find it anywhere

Take a part of the compressor and have your automotive paint supply scan it for you.

Please post the paint code. It probable will help someone.

This is my first post in this thread (I've been hovering over in the flooring forum).

For the past 7 or 8 years I've had nothing but my little Craftsman pancake compressor, not good enough for any real air tools. Having just bought my first house a few months ago, I'm in the process of furnishing my shop.

This showed up today in a crate :)

It's an Ingersoll Rand 60 gal, 3hp. I'm sure the 5hp would have been nice, but for what I do this will be plenty. It will stay inside the shop for a few months until I have time to build a permanent enclosure for it outside the shop. Can't wait to wire it up!

Look what followed me home today!

Pretty happy to finally have a decent air source. Am I ok to wire it on a plug? I would like to put it on a moving dolly so I can roll it out of the way in the winter. Here's the plug I have next to my panel:

Is this a good plan?

Sure, there is no problem wiring it up to a dryer plug or whatever you have there. Be careful with the dolly you build for it though ... it's very top-heavy and you will need to make it so it doesn't tip over easily while on the dolly. When you're not using it in winter, be sure to open the drain **** on the bottom of the tank and leave it open so any condensate will run out.

I actually have a fridge cart, so I will just move it with that. The guy gave me a drier and a regulator, too. I think the drain **** is missing from the bottom so I will have to fab up a drain.

Bought this barely used 5HP Champion about a month ago. Came with some nice options: pressure lubricated , after-cooler, low oil monitor, mag starter.

Update--

Well, I finally got things set up and running for the first time yesterday.

Electrically, I'm using a Siemens motor starter with a Hand/Off/Auto (I dunno why they use the term "hand", but I suppose it means the same as manual override) switch, and using the Square D pressure switch that came with it. (Off= 175, On=140-ish. I haven't bothered adjusting it yet.)

For the air filter, I just went to Farm and Fleet (regional farm/hardware/everything store) and got a Fram automotive air filter about double the depth of the original filter, and a little bigger diameter. But, the inner diameter is smaller than the outer diameter of the original, so it fits snug. I used some threaded rod to make up for the added depth.

From the pump, I'm running through dual Franzinators. Out of the tank, at least for now, I just threw on an inexpensive Craftsman regulator.

I actually ended up draining about 4-5 gallons of water out of the tank. It was pretty clear and clean, but there are indications that there might be some scale in there.

It seems that there might be a need for some new wrist pins, or rings, or pistons, or something, as it's definitely louder than I think it should be. After cycling through the tank fill-ups a couple of times, I'll change the oil again, and when I do, I'll pull of the bearing plate and see what there is to see inside.

I put a stethescope on it, and it seems that most of the noise is coming from the heads, and the High-Pressure side in particular, which is to be expected, but it just seems to be worn-by-use rattles that could probably be fixed.

Here's a quick cell-phone picture of the setup so far. Still a work in progress, for sure.

Newly purchased Makita MAC700. Needed something small & inexpensive, preferably oil-splash. A perfect fit for my corner!

Sgt you should look into temperature rated hose out of the compressor and check vale at the tank in case of hose or tubing failure

This is pretty lame compared others' out there, but it was the best I could do for $100. And to be honest, I'm just glad to have a compressor for the first time in my life!

Finally a thread I can contribute to. I love this site, have been spending more time here than the H.A.M.B. since I bought my first house. Been taking a lot in and learning as much as I can. This is my first post, but I will definitely have more as soon as my Bendpak four post lift gets here.

Here's mine in my old garage.

That's a great value! I had the same set up for years and only let it go to my compressorless brother because I got a 80 gal 2-stage to power a blaster.

Your compressor will do fine for everything short of blasting, and body work tools.

Good find.

Sgt you should look into temperature rated hose out of the compressor and check valve at the tank in case of hose or tubing failure

The hose I'm using is 3/4" Thermoid Hercules 500, rated to 212°F, and 500psi working pressure. I put in a brand new in-tank check valve before I even ran the electrical circuit.

It works great, but sounded really clanky. I did a few tank fills, before doing another oil change, and it was taking right around 15 minutes to go from empty to 175psi. I adjusted the pressure valve for a 150psi cut-out, and a 120psi cut-in, but I just didn't feel comfortable with the noises it was making. So i took off the head, and the cylinder jug.

Wowsers. I'm glad this pump was only running at 800 rpm!! Essentially, the high-pressure connecting rod was super oblonged on the crank end, and the needle bearing around the wristpin was out of needles. The low-pressure side was ok, although only the top of the three compression rings was springy.

So, new main bearings, oil seal, rings, gaskets, and a high-pressure rod assembly are in the works, as well as a cylinder hone and crank polishing.

Here's a better-resolution pic than the previous one, although it really doesn't show much more detail:

Thanks... I knew it was a good buy when I found it, and as I said, I'm just psych'd to have a compressor at all. I'd like to eventually be able to do some blasting and body work, so I'm thinking of adding on a big tank (mounted in an outside shed). I've got a line on an 80 gal. tank for $50, but I'm not sure the compressor could handle filling it.

Here is mine, its a Devilbiss VAG-5006 compressor, it came with the shop when I bought the house, so I don't really know too much about it. Its got a 7.5hp motor. Just as soon as I post this, I find more information on the compressor! Its a 80gal tank and it puts out 23.69cfm!

Sorry for the cell phone pictures, all my cards are full for the good camera.

After wanting a two-stage compressor for the last ten years and making a concerted effort searching Craigslist for 6 months I finally picked up this baby for only $400! (TIP, if you are really looking for compressor try “compresser” in your search) it had been dropped and miswired so it needed a relief valve and a pressure switch, and I added the mag starter, new guage, oil change, and new air filter, but for just under $600 I finally have a rebuildable industrial air compressor.(it also came with the sharpe water seperator shown in the photo)

Here's my new compressor. I just got it this week from Eaton. It's a 80 gallon,2 stage, 7.5 h.p. motor with a 10 h.p. pump that runs at 640 rpm. I don't have electric ran to it yet so I don't know how quiet it is..it's supposed to be pretty quiet though. At least I hope it is! Gotta call the electrician on Monday and get it hooked up. Now I just gotta decide what I wanna do about vibration isolators. McMaster has some nice ones...just gotta decide which ones I want to buy.
