Connecting SER cable to MHF

I have 2-2-2-4 aluminum SER cable running from my main electrical panel over to the exterior wall closest to the garage. At the wall I need to transition to 2-2-2-4 MHF so that I can make the buried wire run over to my detached garage and connect to a sub-panel. I will be using a 60 amp breaker at the main panel, so the wire size is well within the specs for amps and distance.

What do I buy to make the interconnection between SER and MHF inside the junction box? Do I buy an empty plastic or metal junction box and then use approved wire splices (barrel splice?) inside the box? Anyone have a suggested brand/type of wire splice that will be code compliant for #2 aluminum wire?

Polaris connectors are very common for splicing large wire such as 2 AWG. Not sure if Home Depot has them, but they are common. They are not a true "**** splice" but the should work well for your application.

I am not sure if it is approved for aluminum wire, but the old split bolts work well also. You MUST do at least a double wrap of GOOD (3M 88) electrical tape.

Some one else will have to recommend what size box you need for your splices.

Polaris connectors, Many split bolts are rated for aluminum, You could also use a terminal box

Midwest and I'm sure other manufacturers make them. Available in 60A, 100A and up. About $100, probably not much more expensive by the time you purchase a box + individual connectors and they are very installer friendly.

Those terminal boxes are probably overkill, but would be really convenient. It looks like the size I need would cost about $110.

I found a few wire splice supplies at Home Depot, but the stock was limited. However, I could get the splices for about $2.50 each, and then add heat shrink or tape for insulation.

Splicer/reducer if you want inline, split bolts if you want side by side.

The Polaris are for the trust fund guys or those who take them from work...nice tho.
