I have a stupid question. I'm thinking about signing up for a Costco membership (mainly for this jack, but would would shop here for other things anyway), but do I NEED an Amex? Can I just pay for the membership and shopping in cash instead?

I don't feel like opening a new credit card just to use it at Costco... i have enough credit cards.

You might consider their "executive" membership so that you can get their Costco AMEX card as it affords you double cashback (2% from the membership, 2%-4% from the Costco Amex). In my case, I basically get about $400-$500 back every year which more than covers the cost of the membership.

You do NOT need an amex card, but that is the only credit card they will take. They will take cash, and I believe they take checks, but I haven't written a check there in years.

They take cash, AMEX, and debit cards.

This jack does not show to be in stock at the Costco near me but they have it. You simply have to go in and check. However, the stock has been dwindling and they don't seem to be replacing it.

that may be the case in your area, but this past Sunday at Costco I noticed they just got several new pallets full of these floor jacks, there were at least 12+. A couple of week's prior they were down to about 4 left so they are definitely re-stocking them in southern California.

Same here, I've seen these jacks for the past year and a half at my costco. Go in, pallet half full, come back, couple left, come back again 3/4 pallet so on and so on.

So as it turns out my local CostCo's had it in stock for the standard $99.99!

So I got two :)

The jack is very heavy, almost two heavy for lifting but honestly it rolls very well. The frame of my weekend car is right under 4'' from the ground making this jack very well suited for the car.

I'll put these two to use very soon!

Still going strong since the day I got it and started this thread.

And it keeps going... I bought one yesterday and used it to rotate the tires on my truck after my Craftsman Professional high-lift one died.

The Arcan is HEAVY, holy **** this thing weighs a lot, but I don't plan on every carrying it again now that it's on the floor. It lifts pretty effortlessly, I wish it lowered a little more slowly though.

Question - can you rebuild a Craftsman jack? It would be nice to keep as a backup.

Got mine this year, still available at Chicagoland Costcos. Too heavy to throw in the car but thats why I have the HF aluminum jack, which this replaces for home use. Rather have the heft for heavy duty anyways. Only issue are the painted wheels are rusting already, no biggie.

Bought one about a week ago at a Phoenix area Costco, except it was a 3.25 ton jack. Still at 6,500lbs, it will still do everything I need..

Do you think it is worth the worth $50 to join Costco to get it?

I had blue one for 5 years now. No problems so far, though I don't use it everyday.

Just to buy tools? No, if you decide to shop pretty much everything there, then yes.

Otherwise find a friend who has the card, and ask him to go with you or tag along when he goes to shopping.

I'd say it is worth it. I would have easily paid $50 more for the jack. Now I have the jack and a Costco membership.

I am not sure if I can justify getting the membership just for the jack. When we had a membership we seldom used it.

If you never use the membership, I guess $150 to get a jack of that quality is not bad. Especially when you consider you can take it back if it fails.

Are there any GJ members in the Bmore, MD area who would be willing to go to Costco with me so I could get the Arcan jack? I would really appreciate it! Please PM with your contact info. :)

Friend Buys Jack

If you have a friend with a membership buy the Arcan jack and it breaks, can you still take it back to Costco? You could just say it was a gift and you know they bought it there. Anyone tried this?

unlikely that you'll get a replacement that way or store credit for return; their system won't allow them to do much without first scanning a membership card. they may ask that your "friend" come with you so that the "friend" can take care of the return/exchange and then you and your friend sort out the matter between the two of you.

they have to find the original receipt on their computer, no paper receipt is needed.

I returned mine after 2 years with on questions asked.

in your case, without the paper receipt, you have to find someone who bought one.

Anybody can make great use of a COSTCO membership. Everybody has to buy misc food items, household items, drug store items.

I am a bachelor and only shop for myself.

The notion that a COSTCO membership would only be used one time to buy the ARCAN jack and then go unused after that is just stupid...............

before they can start a search for a receipt on their computer system they need a membership ID by scanning your membership card.

even if you have a paper receipt, they still have to scan your membership card in their system to issue a refund or exchange.

either way, a membership card is required; paper receipt or not.

agreed. not sure why one can't make use of a membership if they got one, unless the nearest costco is completely out of the way to shop at regularly.

I called Arcan about this issue and the XL325R jack is the exact same jack that they have been making for years. They were calling it the XL350R for years but the jack rating police made them change the rating from 3.5 tons to 3.25 tons. Regardless of what the new rating says, Arcan still considers it to be a 3.5 ton jack and they have not changed the jack in any way, they have only changed the rating.

If don't live near a Costco, you probably are not going to shop there often.

Yeah, and given that the jack is still cheaper at Costco with a $50 membership purchased exclusively to buy the jack, it's really NOT all that stupid, not at all.

Heck, I moved 12 miles away from the nearest Costco, and stopped going nearly enough to justify the cost of membership, but had I not been able to ride in with a friend or family member to buy my Arcan jack a year or two ago, I'd have paid the $50 for a membership in a heartbeat.

I bought one of those a year ago to replace my old one that not repairable. My Arcan jack works very well for my own jacking needs. I like that for it's capacity it will also slide under smaller lower sitting sedans and mini-vans. I have no complaints.

although it's just cosmetic, it kind of ***** 'cause the 3.5 was a cool number... 3.5ton and minimum height was 3.5" ... :D

that must be a recent change though. the old stock (not that old, maybe a few months) at my local costco still says 3.5 tons.

in regards to being able to use the costco membership for other things... we're not the biggest Costco shoppers ourselves, and only a family of 3 (relatively small people). yet, our executive membership + costco amex card gives us two cashback checks that typically exceed $500 combined at the end of the year. it more than pays for the $100 exec. membership. (granted, I use the costco amex card elsewhere for additional cashback too) unless it's really inconvenient to get to a costco warehouse, it's really a no brainer of a deal to get a membership + their amex card.

I just read this thread and have a few observations:

1. I've had a Costco membership for 10 years, but RARELY shop there, due to so much of it being bulk. We rarel lkeave without spending 3, 4 or $500. Regardless of whether you need it or save a bit buing in bulk, I don't want to drop that kinda change every time I go in! I use it about 1 or 2X per year - for really great deals on something I really need.

2. I have to lift my jack fairly often - to get it from shop to garage, to take it out to the curb, to take it too a buds place....and 100lbs is HEAVY!

3. I wouldn't want a jack with a fixed pad. I switch between rubber pad, a metal one and also have a door holding dolly I made that fits the hole.

4. Has anyone mentioned putting a roll-bar pad or pool-noodle on the handle to protect your car? Essential!

5. Someone mentioned that this jack swaed when lifting something heavy....that'd scare me!! I've NEVE Rseen m Craftsman jack flex - even under Duramax Diesels!

I don't know, maybe it depends on where you at.

I'm not a member since we share membership with another family, my wife and the other's wife are members. I have returned in many times over the years and with receipt in hand, I've never had problems. thou they never gave me cash refund, either credit back to the AMEX for credit card purchases or in-store gift card for cash purchases.

i just read your post and have a few observations too:

1. if you RARELY shop at Costco, why in the world have you been paying for a membership for 10 yrs? you can just sign up when there is actually something you want rather than keep a membership for 10yrs that you almost never use. furthermore, you have strange shopping habits or perhaps an impulse control problem with your wallet if every time you shop at Costco you end up spending $300-$500. certainly not everything is sold in bulk at Costco; they certainly aren't selling these floor jacks by the pallet. there are enough variety of products to make a costco membership useful and beneficial without throwing $300+ on every shopping trip.

2. if you need a floor jack that you're going to carry with you to the track, to your buddy's, or where ever, you should consider an aluminium one, not this steel one. this one works great rolling around the floor in a garage; i don't think anyone considers it to be highly portable.

3. the rubber pad on this jack comes off. you can replace it with whatever suites you. you can always fabricate any kind of adapter as you please.

4. not sure what you're calling a roll-bar pad or pool handle, but if you're talking about the padding around the handle so that if it hits the car it doesn't damage the finish of the car,... well, it's there. See pictures in 1st post. so if that's what you're talking about, i don't get your point here? if not, i'm curious what you mean...

5. i don't know who someone is, or under what circumstances they saw what and I certainly don't know what "swaed" means.

I mean no disrespect, but your post of "observations" comes off rather negative and unhelpful with unsubstantiated points and can only make me conclude you've woken up on the wrong side of your bed and decided to thread **** here?

Bought my second one today!
Too good of a deal to pass up. Extra jack will make lifting the car a lot easier until I get a lift one of these days. Going to use cross beam adapters on them to get my vette up for work requiring the wheels to be off.
I have had my other one for 2 years now, still works flawlessly.

I can't get my Arcan with the cross beam adaptor under the back of my C5 without driving up on 2" X 10" planks. I used to lift the rear in the center of the aluminum cross member, but I guess it's not recommended.

That is my typical luck. I have crossbeams in route from summit.
I didn't open the new jack yet until I try out the adapter on my current arcan.

Figured it will be a 2 step process. Jack up enough to get planks under the tires and then try to get arcan under it with an adapter. Almost ordered the race ramp 3" ramps as well but spending more money wasn't looking good today. $200 in adapters and jack plus another $200 for ramps I am unsure if 3" will be enough. Wood plank cheap to trial fit. Pricing out atlas 4 post and hopefully it will all be moot by spring :)

I have the same Summit piece and with the outboard pads all the way in it still about 1-1/2" too tall without the planks.
