I see the 44992 set is $59.99 right now. Probably get it lower w discounts.

Here's my question, these now claim to be 84T? I have the old 60T version and I'm looking to put together a decent socket set for a friend for the holidays.

I'm almost considering ordering these and maybe giving her my old 60T and stepping up to these 84's. Or are they a downgrade? Oh, it's a situation where she would not at all mind getting quality "used" ratchets as this is really over the top anyhow.

I searched but didn't find any mention of the thin profiles now being 84T on the board. I did find this thread where people say the 60T is more reliable

Thing is my present 60T's are USA and have stamping about special anniversary edition (maybe they all did?). I actually dunno why I care about the anniversary thing as I don't really "collect" tools but to use............and to that end I'll probably hoard my current 60's and the new 84's "just to have them" (and use them.) She may just have to live with the terrible raised panels that come in the kit I'm buying her LOL

Point of interest, the 84T "premium" ratchets with a square-ish end are USA made. The 84T thin profiles are Taiwain I think.

I seem to remember seeing them on Craftsman's website not too long ago. I thought about buying them but I couldn't really justify it. Maybe I should check again, them going away would probably be sufficient reason to pick a couple up.

There is always this set, three ratchets, with their thinner profile head and 75-tooth design, the user only need 4.8 degree ratcheting arc to deliver more movement in less space.

I know! I think it's really cool they're putting the better (75T) ratchets in kits but still that kit only has 88 sockets for the same $ as the 230pc set with 116 (IIRC) sockets. Actually the 230 is $90 right now vs $100 for the $155.

But yeah, I went through the same thought process and thanks for the info.

Revival and I have a confession to make:

I used one of the Craftsman 75T ratchets today in 3/8" drive for the first time ever AND I REALLY LIKE IT! I find the handle comfortable and the action of the ratcheting mechanism is smooth but positive.

Also these heads are nearly identical in height to the thin profiles; I measure this import 75T at .490" while my USA 60T thin profile is .476". However I do believe the new Taiwanese thin profiles are closer to .500"

Anyway, I give the 75T a thumbs up! Nice ratchet.

Yeah the 1/4 and 3/8 do feel nice. I haven't actually used em but I did feel em in store recently. However that 1/2 is heavy as hell. Definitely the worse one out of the bunch .

I find the mechanism to be a little sloppy, more so than my old 36t versions but they are noticeably smoother. Actually don't find the 1/2" to be all that heavy. Last Xmas I bought the 155 piece set and the 84 piece bit set, and take them with me any time I need to do anything at my parents house. Reasonably sturdy so far and I don't care if my BIL shows up and abuses them.
