I vote for whichever is the stone on the pac-man wall to be the stone for the "D" and the "trece" part to be stainless, but frankly whichever you choose will look great

I think you hit it out of the park with the first rendering, but then I'm a big fan of wood. I will concede that it is out of step with the rest of the house. But I still like it.

The house is a mix of everything, on the entrance you will see 3 types of wood, granite, exposed concrete so it isn't that out of it. I thought wood was a good choice because normally everyone does metal thin numbers on these modern houses.

Looks fantastic--I particularly like the faucet knobs, and the garden wall is awesome. I am not showing that to my wife!

If you want a happy wife, get a green wall. The happiness should last about 5 days and will pop out every time someone visits and comment on it.

That is a good start

numero cinco

Yes for me would definitely be number 5 :thumbup::thumbup:

So stainless TRECE and just a bit of detail on the D.
I thought about it yesterday, I'm not a psychologist but big bold metal on the number makes you think different about the house. I made an exercise in my mind imagining what I would think of our house if I was looking for it as a buyer.
- wood: that is one awesome looking number, you don't see that very often.
- thin metal numbers: here we arrived.
- thick metal numbers: here we arrived, wow if the number is made like that, how is the rest of the house built.

So not as cool as wood, but it "adds" value

I'm going to start the stainless parts and try the granite D since I have a lot of leftover. We go from that till we like it.

Maybe I can do a lot of Ds and change them through the year, Hopefully this will be my first Christmas as a homeowner and instead of a million lights I will just do this.

Wow, I've been meaning to check out this thread for a while. I should have started sooner as this place is awesome.

Everything that you have done along the way makes me wonder what you do for a living. In case I missed it, I'm guessing an architect or something similar ?

Haha, messengers are not allowed inside the condo. Fedex and all mail is delivered to the security guys on the entrance. I can feel the joy, no more fedex came and you were not here anymore!

You didn't like my cookies? ;)

I just got promoted to chief of operations at a local retail oil company. I manage production/mixes/purchases etc.

I have a very creative imagination, the problem is that I usually imagine more than what is possible, be it budget capped or just plain not possible.

---
Update:

The sawmill guys delivered another batch of wood, this time is the Granadillo.
You can smell the wood like half block away. I hope it keeps it for long.

D13.0464s.jpg

Pacman wall is almost done, resin/grout and repolish to call it finished.

D13.0457s.jpg

D13.0458s.jpg

Some leftovers

D13.0462s.jpg

With the amount of complete slabs left I can cover more stuff. I will think about it carefully.

D13.0463s.jpg

Sealed the cantera and well, made it look like ****.

D13.0460s.jpg

The granite installer told me that he installed cantera before and he can remove it and get rid of the saw cuts too. In the meantime I will look for a natural sealer.

Some plants on the green wall took a dive, I guess Its bad irrigation because there are more of that kind and they are healthy.

D13.0461s.jpg

And more renders, as I said, sometimes I "create" stuff that is beyond my possibilities, be it because its too expensive for me to produce or just not possible at all. I made this on the fly so I still have to check measures and everything.

Also, don't mind the stone finish on the walls, my skills don't go far enough to emulate the stone that we are using.

This is the bathtub, quoted brand ones and they are 9k+!!!! with that amount of money I can have it made in marble if I wanted. Still deciding if we make it in concrete/brick+stucco/marble. Water will come out of the recessed hole in the wood shelve (that is the plan, reality can be cruel)

D13.0452s.jpg

Sink area, those lamps, I LOVE them. they will be quite an achievement if I can pull them off.

D13.0453s.jpg

Close shot of the sinks with the spouts, the renders call that the "longer" mirror spout is going to work :rocker:

Love the rendering for the bathroom, looks absolutely stunning!! I thought the outside was great, but the interior is even better again!

Sunbimmer, the plants should hold up fine once established and the watering is sorted. It can take a few attempts to get the correct amount/time etc. My mate will typically loose up to 10% of the first planting, after that they are great and need little maintenance.

You've been hiding this ROOF from us. Is there a stairway to get up there and use it like a deck?

Awesome renders! Personally I would go with number 4 or 7...

Thank you!

I'm very curious how all the plants in the green wall will hold. I've never seen a vertical garden, looks very cool

Yep, installer told me that exact thing, the weird part is that the garden could well be up to 100% if it wasn't for that particular spot.

A removable stair is planned for roof maintenance, the view isn't that great to justify a deck, I don't want the neighbors to think I'm spying on them

But you are going to mount some fake camera's up there just to mess with them right?
Uff, with my back neighbor that would be like trying to kill him with paranoia  may as well do a large print format of my face staring at his windows and hang it on the back wall

Very creative in the imagination department, I'd say you have some mad skillz in the design department.

Love the integrated towel holders.

Wish I had the time to extend my build into such finite detail custom work.. I am jealous!

Amazing work, as usual. I had a couple questions about horizontal surfaces though. You know... dust settling. You'll have to go through the bathroom with compressed air (or the leaf blower) every now and then to get the settled dust off all those horizontal stone surfaces. Also, your name plate: everything is going to settle in the letter cut-outs. Maybe have a drainage hole at the lowest spots or at least bevel the lowest spots backwards and down. That way, it will look normal, but everything that lands on the horizontal surfaces will tend to slide out or easily be sprayed off. You might have to set them away from the wall a tiny bit if you use the bevel idea. Maybe I'm over-thinking this a bit, but I thought I'd ask.

You are right.

On the bathroom it was a given and I just thought that I could "pressure" wash the walls.

But on the outside I have looked at other houses and windows with aluminum in the middle tend to have black drip spots from the dust accumulated being muddied by the rain. (also on the roof)

The number plate is beveled and will be spaced from the concrete but I will take your advice and do a reverse bevel if possible on the CNC. If we don't have the proper tool I guess I could aim a sprinkler directly to the lettering

Maybe make the entire thing from colored/stamped concrete. You can get the color(s) and finish(es) you want without all the negative side effects of metal left out in the elements. I'll let you get back to work and stop adding my $.02. ;)

I wish I was at work.. Got a terrible cold yesterday like in 5 minutes. 40C temperature with all the beautiful effects of it. Never had such intense/long shivers in my life.

I'm just here enjoying my cocktail of pills

And all cents are very much appreciated so keep throwing them

Helluva way to start the weekend! My weekend finally opened up with the cancellation of my son's two MX races and my other son's soccer game being cancelled. Wait... I have drywall waiting for me in the basement. I think I still came out ahead. ;) Get well soon!

Well I hit what I would now call a Concrete Underground Stage.

That is when a lot of stuff is happening but nothing that is measurable or show able or that interesting to see.

I have a "situation" that I need help with but first:

I found a place to put the extra slabs of granite:

D13.0468s.jpg

It made sense to give continuity to the outside wall on the inside.

And then I killed sponge bob!

D13.0467s.jpg

Used his yellow flesh to create small minions to test stone cleaners and sealers in brands/dilutions

D13.0466s.jpg

Ok, now... The "situation"

The front door is 10.25 inches thick, I can't find any locks that would work on that thickness.

I'm willing to create a locking mechanism from scratch but if there is something out there that any of you know that could work or have any input on the subject please post it.

Just a thought outside the box.

Rob pieces from an electric door opener that you might find in a commercial setting or for a keyless entry system. For the handle just any old piece of iron will work.

Electric deadbolts, that is quite a good a idea. I already imagine a couple of things that could work...

Just need a battery backup for emergencies.

Thanks!

I was checking out the magnetic locks this morning, Yale makes a 1200lb unit that could be completely hidden from regular eyes in my application.

Keypad outside and push to exit button on the inside like the one on the bbarker link.

It must be easy to integrate to the PLC of the house control too.

Wow simply stunning and incredible home build. Very different. Had to read each page on this thread. Looking forward to seeing the finished results.

Also very fond of your design concepts and rendering skills. Spent 30+ years of my life immersed in the design field in one form or another and when I have the free time just love doing concept and photo realistic rendered work. Solidworks has come a long way in the rendering capabilities.

Love the 3D designs. As for trying to emulate the stone you chose; have you tried photographing some of it in neutral light and bringing the image into your SW materials editor? ....That is if you wanted to go that far in rendering.

Thanks Scott!

I have learning on the fly but the texture thing in solidworks is such a black magic. I tried what you suggest but I don't have the correct picture to do it, I get the repetitive box texture, my skills stop there at the moment

I found all the info I needed here: http://www.sdcsecurity.com/products.htm

The yale lock was the easier to source locally, you may have better luck over there.

love those renderings! and I thought my dodgy SketchUp file was decent haha.

The House renders were made in sketchup with some addon

I could not stand sketchup, being used to solidworks it was just painful to use the tools.

Downloaded a trial of Revit and made me feel like a retard :lol_hitti

Don't try Revit without a very experienced user nearby.

Mastering simple stuff requires daily use. Very click/command sequence specific. Frustrating as hell until you get inside the mind of the interface designer, and learn the way it was intended to be used. Then not so bad, even intuitive. But in the two years that seems to take.. Very frustrating.

I appreciate sketchup but generally don't care for surface modelers. Prefer solid modelers.. A couple of the new Autodesk free apps look promising if they actually keep improving them.

I really wanted to learn it, but it definitely was beyond my brain capacity and patience at the time, and as you say, without any help it was just odd. It asked 40 parameters to create a window

Long time Lurker...

In my past dealings with Mag-Locks make sure you get battery backups for them, as there are two types, those that fail "safe" and those that fail "secure". When they're fail safe that allows the door to freely open ie not good if they cut power to break in. The locks that fail safe require the electricity to deactivate thus assuming that its the only exit point locks you in the house if no power is available.

Amazing!! I have traveled a lot to Coahuila, northern state of Mexico, there is a very clean simple style with wood marble and tile. And seeing what you have here, takes that beautiful Mexican style to the modern and very cutting edge level, amazing! Love it!

I saw that, I'm opting for fail secure with backup. In case of emergency there is the huge window on the side of the door

Went to buy the metal stock for the bathrooms and exterior number.

HOWWWLLY MATHAFAKA!

I underestimated the price of stainless steel. That thing is expensive!

D13.0469s.jpg

Bought round bar in 3" for showers / 2.5" for sinks, already delivered it to the CNC shop.

Scored a sheet of .250" 316 SS at the price of 304 because it was "dirty" :wtf:

Tried to negotiate the price of .750 304 but it was just too much, so the exterior number will be made in aluminum :bitchslap

And for another exciting moment for me, after much going back and forward with a couple garage door companies about glass doors which are something really "premium" priced down here I called a simple installer, asked for straight rails and he didn't ask questions.

D13.0470s.jpg

Door will be 1 piece guillotine style with vertical lift hardware and a LM8500.

I wanted it at a 15 degree angle for the dramatic look when opening but I just could not think of a proper way to protect the spring/motor from possible vandalism without compromising the looks of such unnecessary idea

I know...I've tried the same thing and just couldn't make the switch. I thought I was leaving my job a year or so ago and almost bought a Solidworks license at $1,200 US just because I got so frustrated with Sketchup.

Are single SW licenses 1,200? I thought they were WAY more than that.

I have been using the educational license from the university

It was when I checked (for the version without bells and whistles). Yeah, I tried to buy an educational version but got stopped at the gate. I couple more years and I should have a niece entering college ;-).
