I was lucky enough to run into an older gentlemen near me that was 75 years old and was starting to sell some of his stuff off, I got to pick his property and he was gracious enough to let me go through his entire collection, the only problem was he knew what everything was worth, so I had to pay up $$$ for the five items that I did get, he had a couple more things I wanted but I just blew my entire picking budget for the year on one pick :wtf:

You know the old saying "the time to buy items like this is when you see them"

I got my first ever visible gas pump, after researching it online I believe it is a 1925 Correct Measure model 10E

Damn! I think this thing weights 1925 pounds too

03-X5.jpg

I picked up two porcelain signs that are incredible shape with almost no damage, a couple of real survivors.

I also grabbed an old 5 gallon Valvoline can and an old store display grease gun cartridge holder, I need to do some more research on it to make sure exactly what is used for?

BF, good to see you posting an update. Nice job bringing back the straw dispenser and those are some nice items you scored on your picking runs.
Can’t wait to see what you do to the gas pump.

Knee%20Surgery-X5.jpg

I had to have knee surgery yesterday, so I have some time to get my thread back up to date.

I hand rubbed out my new Goodyear sign with some wax and got it hung in DaBarn :)

Its amazing how heavy these old signs are, this one comes in at .111 thousands with the thickness of the porcelain included, must be 12 gauge steel.

I decided to tear into the Correct Measure pump even though I have 30 other projects started already, The top skins are in good enough shape to save, but the bottom skin was cut up and dented pretty bad, I thought it would be easier to make new ones, I cut the steel 43" tall by 56" wide from 12 gauge steel, it was too thick for my roller so I took it to a local fab shop and they rolled it for me and didn't charge me
I will cut the rolled steel and mount it on the base in two separate pieces.

I think this about brings me up to date on what has been happening around here! it may be a while before I get back to the pump, I also need to get back to my Flying A sign that I started on last year.

Those are some seriously cool aqquisitions you got there! All of em!

Where'd you find your Gates belts at? I have the same rack and sign but struggling to find any belts..

Good luck on the knee recovery. Mine didn't go well and took forever back in 19.

Thanks for the visit! the sign and rack are original Gates, but the belts are just cheap Chinese knock offs, the gates sleeves around the belts came from a ebay seller that reproduced them I don't know if they still sell them?

Nice to see you checking in on my thread! I was in shock when I saw this car, that guy should of at least took a electric knife and shaped it up a little bit better and that color match was a bit off, he should of added a little more silver in that red to lighten it up

BF, I was wondering how your knee situation was coming along. I hope you have a speedy recovery and get back to DaBarn soon. Those porcelain signs look awesome.
At least the foam repair guy made an attempt to paint it, although badly.
The car kind of looks like it has leprosy. :scared:

Welcome home buddy.
Da-Barn is lookin good with all the new (since I saw it last) treasures.
Nice score on the pump and signs and car wash stuff. I just scored a goodyear flange sign the other day too. I like the bright colors on the Buffalo sign and love that you opened up the pump and started the redue on it. 12 gage seems a little heavy to me but ok.

So what kind of surgery did you have on the knee?

Here is a surprise sign that I got for Christmas that I still need to hang somewhere in my garage. I didn't know that the family was in the oil business til now

BF,
Great scores!
Hope the rehab goes well. And quickly!

The foam body work reminded me of an old SNL bit about the new Ford Adobe.
Get a dent, just reform the clay bodywork.

I had Arthroscopic Partial Medial Meniscectomy, they just scoped it on Thursday, today I got to unwrap it, just two small incisions! they done a great job! very little pain involved. The IV hurt more as it took four probes to find a good vein :wtf: Can't wait until tomorrow because I get to take a shower after four days

Thanks for checking in on me and the boost! I really had fun picking all the new items for the barn.

I decided to use 12 gauge steel on the skins for the pump to match what was on it originally, this thing weights a ton. I may have to get this beast on wheels or I will never be able to move it :dunno:

Nice score on the Long's Supreme Motor Oil sign

I hit a milestone this weekend and just about finished off two big projects that I have been working on for quite some time now, last June I started to remodel the front of our house, remove the old deck and build a new porch, then reside the front.

At about the same time frame I had started to make a Flying A sign out in DaBarn, that was put on the back burner too!

Well in July 2020, I broke my right tibia so those projects came to a screeching halt, then this year 2021 I needed to have left knee surgery, so my project time was cut way back

Here are some pictures of the front of my house after a long remodel, I still need to stain the new porch and replace the old light fixtures, but I'm counting this a victory for me!!!

47-X4.jpg

48-X4.jpg

49-X4.jpg

I'm also posting some photo's of a sign that I started on long ago! I love collecting the vintage petroliana items, but this stuff is reaching prices that are almost unattainable to me at auctions, so I had the thought, why not make my own signs, this gives me something to do in the barn and it saves me a ton of money! The first photo is just a sign that I saw online and decided this will be the first sign that I want to make. It is the Flying A gas station brand sign that was on top of the Flying A gas stations of days gone by. All the fab work is now done, I just have some grinding and sanding to do then it will be ready for primer and paint, I'm counting this a victory for me too :)

01-XL.jpg

This is the photo that started it all, I had no dimensions to go by just this photo, I will not be adding the neon as it would be really expensive, so I'm just doing what I can.

23-X5.jpg

I welded on tabs all around the inside and then drilled and tapped them for 10-32 screws, just in case I ever wanted to take it apart to add lights or maybe even neon someday?

Now I'm thinking if I just lived a little closer to Don out in Southern California, I would have him lay on one of those million dollar paint jobs

Send it over. I'll give you my best effort. That "A" looks fantastic and sooo clean
I have the faces cut out on mine then got side tracked with the clock and Foster sign but after the surgery I'm back on it.
Thanks again

Thanks for stopping by my thread! that Fosters sign is freaking awesome sitting up on its pole now (y)

It's really going to be a showpiece when you finish one of your own "half-million" dollar paint jobs!

Thanks for the visit! I measured out the whole thing with my Chicago Bears tape measure

nice finds and work on your place!! your lawn looks like a golf course and not sure how you did that?

might I suggest always making 2 signs when you make these cool ones so you can haul them all to California and leave one of each with Don for painting them?

I had my left knee scoped in 1985 and even though it hurt like heck before surgery he couldn't find anything wrong, but 36 years later it's acting up again (my Dr. and I agree that it's probably arthritis so i'll just work thru it). good luck and hope yours is pain free and working like it should soon cause you do do great work.

cheers

Thanks for the visit! One of my hobbies outside of the barn is my yard, I always enjoy taking care of the grass and mowing it, I don't have a sprinkler system though, it always looks good during the spring with all the rain we get here, it does suffer a bit in the dog days of summer in July and August, its just to large for me to water it.

I sent Don the pattern for the Flying A sign and he has started on his too, I can't wait to see how his turns out.

Thanks for the compliment on the barn, its where I spend most of my time and money, it has taken years to get it to where it is now.

Ouch!
Signs and Flying A looking good.
Shorty

The knee is doing pretty good now, I'm also trying to take things a little slower these days as I get older.

I'm real happy with how the sign turned out, it is pretty heavy, I made the whole thing out of 16 gauge steel, I didn't want to cheap out on how I made it, I wanted to make it like they would have back in the 20's or 30's.

Got things looking really sharp there Tony, the flying A is beautiful
Jim

Thanks for the visit! I need to get the sign painted, I wish I had a paint booth, my barn is also my man cave, so with all my stuff being displayed in my barn, I don't like to grind, sand or paint inside so it makes it a pain in the ****. I want to build a small room in the back corner of the barn someday where I can sand, grind a paint and not make a mess in the rest of the barn. I have a big wish list

That is a problem. I can't imagine working inside the party garage. It's bad enough with the doors open and a car club driving into the yard.
I have vacuum tools for all my sanding but not grinding and my shop still gets pretty dirty with the bigger projects.
I'm staring at the Big "A" sign every time I step into the shop but the clock and Foster sign put it on the back burner and now that I'm held up for a month of healing it still sits but I'll hit it hard next month. Thanks again for the pattern

I got this sign post for five bucks at an auction a few years ago, I thought that was a steal, its been sitting in the barn ever since. I thought it was time to make a sign for it.

02-X4.jpg

I cut a piece of 16 gauge steel 16" x 24".

04-X4.jpg

03-X4.jpg

I rounded the corners on my throatless shear.

05-X4.jpg

I bolted the new sign to the sign post, but I thought it looked too plain.

07-X4.jpg

I decided to add a piece of 1/2" flat stock around the outside and tack it on.

06-X4.jpg

Now I have to figure out what to put on it?

08-X4.jpg

Damn! now I have two projects to paint

Don

Hope your neck is healing up and you get back to normal soon.

I want to build a small room in the back corner of the barn so I have a place to paint and sand my projects, but I need to add a exhaust fan, power, lights and heat, right now I do take everything outside so I'm not making a mess inside. With the price of lumber and all the rest of the materials needed threw the roof right now, I will just add it to my wish list for now 🤪

Tony's pattern and Don's craftsmanship. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Scott

I'm okay with the fabrication part of the sign, but Don may put me to shame on the paint side, the guy is a true craftsman with a spray gun!

I put The Big Party Garage on my bucket list.

Hope all is well with you and the Mrs out in Arizona, I'm waiting to win the lottery so I can travel around the country to visit all my Garage Journal friends, that and I won't have to get up and go to work anymore 😅

Tony, you’re welcome out here anytime, but I would hold off until the fall, Phoenix is just entering the seventh level of Hell, aka Summer… triple digits for the next three months.
I finally broke down and added AC to the garage last summer- it was 118 the day they installed it….

Tony the flying A is beautiful, it will be interesting to see what you put on the sign.
I have a separate area for grinding and painting, problem is I spend all of my time there and not organizing my display area. It looks like a warehouse!

I always wanted to make a project from rebar, well I was at Menard's last week so I grabbed a handful of 3/8 rebar stakes, I also saved a interesting shaped piece of 16 gauge steel from when I cut out all the pieces from my Flying A sign, being that I'm on a sign making kick I decided to make another sign.
