I made another batch of hot pepper shake last week. I have been drying out one last batch of peppers and they were ready to grind, I cut them up and laid them out to dry, then I run them through a mini food processor, then I use them to sprinkle on what ever I want to add a little heat to. This batch had some Trinidad peppers added in, they register two million on the Scoville scale 😰

Better put some toilet paper in the freezer, Tony. That stuff is going to hurt.

I decided to restore an old pour spout can that Pop's picked up for me sometime back, it looked like it had been sitting at the bottom of a lake for years 😅

02-X4.jpg

This is what it looked like after soaking in a bucket of apple cider vinegar over night and rubbing it out with a scotch brite pad! I was pleasantly surprised on how good of shape it was in after getting all the rust off of it.

03-X4.jpg

I sanded it down with some 80 grit sandpaper and used some body filler on a few small dents :)

04-X4.jpg

After getting it all smoothed out a primed.

05-X4.jpg

I gave it a coat of black paint, then wet sanded it with some 2000 grit sandpaper and laid out a couple of stripes.

06-X4.jpg

Then I gave it a coat of dark red and unmasked it, I now have it wet sanded with some 2000 grit paper and is waiting for a coat of clear and maybe a Flying A or Veedol decal, but the wife wants it without the decals.

I finished off a can of electronics cleaner the other day working on my son's lawn mower and thought what the heck I can add this to my repurposed can collection.

02-X4.jpg

Its nice working on projects that have no dents :D I just sanded this one down and added a coat of primer, then wet sanded it with 2000 grit.

03-X4.jpg

I painted the top and bottom with some silver.

04-X4.jpg

I painted this one with some green that looked close to the older Flying A colors!

Don't tell anyone, but they never had spray oil aerosol cans back in those days 🤣

05-X4.jpg

I now have four cans finished, wet sanded and waiting for a coat of clear and decals

I ran across these cast iron letters and thought this would make a cool Veedol sign, just what I needed another project! I think I set a new record for having the most projects started that are not finished o_O :ROFLMAO:

02-X4.jpg

I tried several different layouts before going with this one, I used what material I had on hand, I cut a piece of 16 gauge flat stock for the background and some 1" flat stock for the frame around the front.

03-X4.jpg

After getting the frame welded up and ground down, I drilled some holes through the frame to attach it to the face.

04-X4.jpg

I added in some rivets and welded them fast on the back side.

05-X4.jpg

The original plan was for it to just be flat, but I decided to weld on 1 1/2" sides to give it that 3 dimensional look, then I drilled holes and mounted the cast iron letters on with some 8-32 flat head screws.

06-X4.jpg

I liked how it turned out, I just need to weld on a couple of mounting tabs, then it ready to send off to paint and hang up on the wall.

Rivets look great on that frame, Tony. Living in the Southwest I often make “authentic hand forged Mexican clavos”out of carriage bolts.
Heat the heads red hot and peen them on my trusty $15 HF anvil. 202DC54B-81A6-4B6B-84E1-C0613BEA42D1.jpeg
I know the cad/zinc
plating is not good to breathe so I set this up in my vise, turn on the shop fan and walk away for a minute or two.
DA541CB7-90C9-4A0E-AF38-DFBB81E70614.jpegUsually use my small Estwing ball pein hammer; gives nice crisp hammer details. Takes less than a minute. 1A687EE4-6F1C-48D5-8F4F-E7BF288556BB.jpegThese usually get a quick spray of clear or just left to rust if they are going outside. I’ve also reheated to blue and clear coated, depending on the look I am trying to achieve.
Threads are still usable. On metal projects the get usually get used as a bolt, on wood I usually just drive them in an undersized hole, like well, a real clavo.

I’ve tried the apple and maple. I’ll get some of the peach.
Are you using rattle cans to paint? Also to ensure you have the most started/not finished projects, I’ll send you a shelf of mine. 👍

Nice work on those cans and that sign is killer.
I like doing cans too. I'm working on one now here at my desk because the shop is FULL with the cars I took out of the party garage to make room for more tables and chairs for the Christmas parties this month.
I think that I can match you with started projects.

I need to do something similar with Texaco; paid my way through college as a nozzle jockey, changing tires, and running the tow truck.

Thanks for the visit and comments, I try to get out in the barn as much as possible, some days I just don't have anything left in the tank after work :(

Thanks for showing us that cool little trick, I want to try that out on a project. I have always wanted an anvil too, but just never pulled the trigger on one yet! Never heard the word clavo before? learn something new everyday

The peach is really smooth and easy drinking, and yes I used Rust-Oleum high performance cans on this project.

Don

Thanks for checking in! that is one nice looking can  I need to build a small paint room in the back corner of the barn, but that is kinda of low on the list right now :(

Now boys, I'm in on the unfinished projects tip board also, I think I got you all beat.
Great sign Tony, you reminded me of some letters I have stashed away!

Jim

Now now! your dealing with a professional procrastinator here! or just maybe someone with ADD o_O :ROFLMAO:

Scott

I too had a short stint as a nozzle jockey at the local truck stop pumping diesel into semi's after school, the place is no longer there and the building was turned into a pretty good Mexican restaurant 😋

January’s shot of the mustang is my favorite. First off I owned a 70 Mach 1 428 cobra jet in the mid 70’s AND that’s the car I got in and started when I paid Don and Ann a visit.

great pics and stuff going on in your shop so keep up the great work. Also love that diner.

I attempted to melt my credit card over the last couple of weeks 🤣

I have acquired three different roller toolboxes and one tool chest box over my life time, I still have them and they are all in great condition, but I have wanted for a long time now to eliminate the three boxes, buy one large one, then down size and organize everything into one large one, so after doing a bunch or research and pricing I settled on the 72" wide US General toolbox from Harbor Freight, the drawers are 22" deep and the over all height is 44" and hey it comes in BLUE

01-X4.jpg

This box is a beast! it weights in at 528 pounds. I'm really happy with it so far (y)

02-X4.jpg

My OCD has now kicked into over drive 🤪

I ordered Kaizen foam for all the draws, Kaizen is a Japanese term meaning "change for the better" or "continuous improvement", some call it shadow foam, once I get all my tools organized I will cut recesses in the foam to hold each tool.

03-X4.jpg

I started with wanting to organize all my bits, so I purchased one of Milwaukee's low profile Packout cases, I really like these cases! then I fell down the Youtube rabbit hole watching all these videos of guys with 3D printers making custom compartments for these cases to organize everything imaginable, so I ordered some custom 3D printed low profile compartments with bit holders.

05-X4.jpg

04-X4.jpg

06-X4.jpg

07-X4.jpg

Man this is OCD orgasmic satisfaction 😆

08-X4.jpg

09-X4.jpg

I started out with the top drawer, I lined it with a piece of the Kiazen foam, then added my tape measures, knives, screwdrivers and a few others, the Packout case fits perfect in the top right drawer.

I will wait until I get the whole toolbox and all my tools organized before I cut any foam, the layout could change several times 🤨

10-X4.jpg

I got the foam in the second drawer and this will be my Craftsman wrench drawer, these are all my older Craftsman wrenches before they cheapened them up, I added my open end adjustable wrenches in the drawer next to the wrench drawer along with my flare nut wrench set.

11-X4.jpg

In the second drawer down in the center will be my Channellock drawer, I love my Channellock tools 😃

12-X4.jpg

The third drawer down in the center will be my socket drawer, I will leave my sockets in the trays, but I will cut some foam for along the front to hold the ratchets and extensions in there.

13-X4.jpg

14-X4.jpg

I have all my hammers and saws in the next drawer, I'm not sure if I want to use this drawer for the hammers, the drawer is deep and seems like a waste of vertical space? My Eastwood body hammers and dollies fit nicely in one of the right hand drawers (y)

This is as far as I got so far, maybe I will get some more organized this weekend

Man I wish I lived closer, I would sneak over there at night and put one YELLOW Dewalt screwdriver bit in the middle of all those RED Milwaukees. You'd probably be paralyzed for a month when you found it.

For the hammers maybe it would make send to lay them face up/down instead of on their sides. The foam should hold them with an easy hole cut for the face to sit steady. This will !make use of the vertical space and save all that horizontal space.

That would drive me crazy, but I would leave it there to remind me that you were here 🤪 I have a buddy when he comes over and I'm not looking he will move something in my toolbox just to screw with me 🤣

That's a good idea! I will wait until I get everything in there before I cut any foam, I don't want to leave anything out and they don't give that foam away 🤑

The new tool chest and your organization look great! Every time in my life I even got near that type of organization, I acquired a new tool that needed to go between two tools where it would not fit!

BF, I like the addition of that big blue box to DaBarn. Looks like it blends in well next to your welding table. I used to work out of a tool box that had all the tools shadowed out in foam. You are correct about getting your layout correct before cutting any foam because it’s a problem to make a change later on. Everything looks great and I hope your credit card recovers quick because it is Christmas season!

Cowboy blue! Love it.

I had the 44” and it was a great box. I’m sure the 72 is the same.
I got one box of Kiazen. So far just my plier drawer is cut but what a difference. You’ll like it. Oh and smart to give layout a test run before committing.

Thanks for the visit, hopefully I will have all the tools I need and in the right place when I cut my foam, I do have a couple of extra pieces just in case 🤣

Its always a pleasure having you checking in, I have been going through my other three boxes sorting through 57 years worth of tools and trying to downsize into one large box, boy its not as easy as I thought it would be, I have changed the layout several times already, its very satisfying and very frustrating at the same time 🤪

Love the blue! I do like the new box a lot, the only thing I found that I'm uncertain about is the one large draw on the bottom left, I'm unsure how I'm going to utilize that deep space yet? post up a picture of your pliers draw, I would love to see it.

Not much happening in DaBarn this week, but I did get a new Veedol oil bottle for the collection

I finished the front porch, but had yet to get the new lights installed, we had a 60 degree day here today so I thought I better get them done before it turns real cold, I bought four explosion proof light fixtures and some Edison bulbs, I really like the vintage industrial look, it may not be for everyone but I think it fits the house pretty well.

I'd bet that your wife is a real delight to hang out with!!
Nice lights. Those lights were used in the spray booth of the first body shop I worked in back in 1965.

Believe they were the required "explosion proof" fixtures for dusty, solvent-producing environments; if a bulb popped the spark would be contained in the outer sealed glass jar. I really like the classic industrial look.

I like the blue box, if I were to start over I would choose the blue.
Lights look great, happy dance overrides every other opinion 👍

Jim

Yeah! I'm really partial to the blue also, I'm really happy with the new box, now I need to figure out how to get everything into one box? but now I'm thinking of keeping two 🤣 🤣

Happy wife, happy life!

Scott

I'm a lucky man! she is easily amused (y)

Oooow, fancy French lights. 😜
Edison bulbs are a nice touch.

The lights look nice! We've got about 15 of em in the barns lower level to light it up.

Thanks! I'm truly blessed to have such an awesome wife, everyone loves her and she lets me play in DaBarn all I want

Hope Ann is healing up!

That makes perfect since! I never knew that, I thought it was just to keep the bulbs from getting broke...Ha!!! I learned something new 🤪

01-X4.jpg

I didn't get much time in the barn this week, but I did start working on another pour spout can, this one looked like one of the better ones I had, until I started working on it. This one looked like it literally went through the wringer 🤪

02-X4.jpg

It was made of some really thin sheet steel, I pushed most of the dents out with my fingers, then I gave it a couple of coats of body filler and a lot of hand sanding o_O

03-X4.jpg

This is what it looked liked after a couple coats of primer, I brought it in the house where its warm to dry for a couple of days before the final sanding.

Man this is OCD orgasmic satisfaction 😆

I started out with the top drawer, I lined it with a piece of the Kiazen foam, then added my tape measures, knives, screwdrivers and a few others, the Packout case fits perfect in the top right drawer.

I will wait until I get the whole toolbox and all my tools organized before I cut any foam, the layout could change several times 🤨

I got the foam in the second drawer and this will be my Craftsman wrench drawer, these are all my older Craftsman wrenches before they cheapened them up, I added my open end adjustable wrenches in the drawer next to the wrench drawer along with my flare nut wrench set.

In the second drawer down in the center will be my Channellock drawer, I love my Channellock tools 😃

The third drawer down in the center will be my socket drawer, I will leave my sockets in the trays, but I will cut some foam for along the front to hold the ratchets and extensions in there.

When I first saw that wall-mounted machine to the right of your toolbox I thought it was one of those men's room condom dispensers. Then I saw it said Hershey's on it. I love the payphone as well.

But the fact that you have two double-box end wrenches in a drawer otherwise occupied by combination wrenches is really bothering me. That needs to be fixed.

I've been considering pulling the trigger on the blue U.S. General roller and box as well. I'm curious how the transition is from multiple smaller tool chests to one large one. How easy is it to roll over to where you are working? Will the drawers stay closed on the unit when it's being rolled around?

Thanks for the visit! I really like the new US General box, it is a bit heavy especially fully loaded, but I won't be moving it around that much, the draws have a latch on the right hand side of each draw underneath the handle you have to activate to open, so the draws will not open unexpectedly, I like this feature a lot, its a great box. I'm searching for some more of the Craftsman boxed end wrenches to complete the set but I want the older ones, the new stuff that Craftsman is selling is junk.
