Do you need to change the bar to make this reliable? I see Amazon reviews mention a lot of chain throwing issues.

Same bar as what comes with it. Even with the best of maintenance and best cutting practices, a bar will need to be changed eventually. The bars can warp to one side from heat, the tip sprocket can go bad, general damage, or extra friction from when the bar gets pinched are all reasons you might need a new bar.
Even without the immediate need for replacement, having a second bar (and chain) can get you out of a "pinch," if you don't have a second saw on hand. you can remove the saw from the bar, attach your second bar to free the first.

I have used the **** out of my 12" saw, and the pole saw, and have had zero issues with the bar that came on it. I recently cut up an entire peach tree that blew over, and the little chainsaw never skipped a beat.

I nesd to find a chain for mine. Took it camping and a buddy smacked a rock with the chain. Saw the sparks come off it, I will sharpen it and keep the original as a backup

$15 cheaper than the cheapest open box on eBay.
$30 cheaper than Amazon.
I didn't search any further than that.

I won't need it till next year, so I'll wait for the next deal on it.
But I'm sure tempted!
Would be great for drilling 1" holes in 2x4's to run HDMI and Cat 6 and other a/v wires through in a home remodel.

I have that one. It's not very powerful, but I've found it adequate and it's nicer than using a right angle adapter especially when you need to do something one handed

2/10, do not recommend.
When you need it, you need it but it's hot garbage. I replaced mine under warranty and the replacement chuck slips. I assume something in the gearbox is plastic but I haven't opened it up to find out. I try to baby mine when I need to use it, I would reel in your expectations of making big holes - I think you want a joist drill for your application anyway.

Anybody seen a deal on a dewalt string trimmer lately? Looking to switch from my ancient Stihl gas trimmer to an electric so the kids can do the trimming.

On the contrary, I've been very happy with my 60V DW string trimmer. However, the factory head is trash. I can't recall the model, but if you swap out the spool it makes reloading much easier and jamming much less likely.

Agree about the factory head. For replacements, look at Husqvarna T35, Echo Speed-Feed 400 (I think Shindaiwa is the same) and Stihl Bump Feed. I recall the Echo spins right on without a parts kit, don't know about the others.

I got the $100-110 20V one from woot earlier this year. put a husky T35 head on it that's made it even better. been great. spins 080 line really well. tried some 095 for giggles and it struggles but if 080 is enough, it's light and easy to use. Depending on the kid's age and how weedy the trimming need is, that might be enough. Light enough that it gets used more often, too...

5AHr battery lasts about an hour. And that's an hour of mostly being used. I'm pretty efficient walking parallel to the edge with the trimmer, going in a line. Not the take a few steps and swipe back and forth at it, lather, rinse repeat that most people do.

I picked up the 60V attachment capable trimmer at HD for $175 on clearance about a month ago. I've been happy with it so far.

Some HD's have the combo kit with it, the 60V blower, battery and charger for $330 on clearance right now. Kind of wish I had waited for that, as that's about $75 less than I paid for the blower/battery and trimmer separately.

That bandsaw tool is pretty awesome, I use it to cut pipe and tube with the aid of the Harbor Freight saw mount.

The free good here, is the impact, which is a standard 1/4" hex impact driver, far from a high torque wrench. The promo for the holiday quarter, is buy that starter kit (2ah, 5ah, charger) for $199, get a "free" tool. On the HD site, they are listed both together like your picture, as well as selecting the starter kit & choosing the tool separately.
