If any of you are still looking for dimple dies I have 1 set left. They are made from 4140. The set is 3/4" 1 1/4" and 1 3/4" dies. I have been making a few of these lately and The price is $125.00 for the set and $8.00 shipping.

Ooof, what a marathon it has been! Only two days I finished before 9 PM since the holidays....to push the snowblower.....No recession here man!
Any how I only got some of the tooling ( yet another $400)I needed for this project yesterday and still am waiting for a 3/8 boring bar for the smaller dimple dies. I already have one of those, but it's too long and I don't want to cut it if I don't have to.:wtf:

OK ,so below is a test I did with a die I made years ago. It is a 1.0''
It has a big rad on it and looks off IMO and at the time I had clearance for mat. even on the 1.0'' shaft ,which is not needed in fact, because the mat. only gets pulled down about .180''. The pin in the middle acts as a guide. I will leave a tighter clearance on the main shaft of the new ones and that should mean that they could do many sheet thicknesses.

Somehow my camera still can take pictures after I dropped it on my concrete floor a while back. The main viewer has gone blank, so I'm going blind when I take shots....

If anyone has suggestions, fire away!
I'm off to make a first proto for a 1.0'' with a .25 rad and .5'' flange.

Fresh off the press( well... lathe)
At last, progress!
Sorry, had to get all the proper tooling before being able to design and program anything.
There's much more to it than just pressing a button.....

Here is the first prototype for the 1.0'' size. I still have to tweak the outer edge from a champher to a rad, to limit the marking but over all I think this is gonna be it.
I added a groove to help out so it won't slip out of hand when handling them.

There are 3 steps in turning them, other than cutting them on the saw. The first is the backside squaring and bolt hole.
That is what I shall do now.

HAVE A GOOD LOOK AT THEM NOW, BECAUSE I SHALL BE MAKING THE OTHER 2 STEPS ON THESE LATER ON IN THE DAY.

NOW IS THE TIME TO CHANGE THINGS THAT YOU DON'T LIKE. LET ME KNOW,
PLEASE!

ALSO NOTE THAT THIS IS THE FIRST OF 6 DIFFERENT SIZES. THE COMPLETE KITS WON'T BE READY FOR SHIPPING THIS AFTERNOON!!!!

I will be posting the others as I get them done.
I am setting one third of the materials aside for the pipe size holes for you guys with the HF punch kits, don't worry:bounce:

You da man Claude. Nice work on the tools so far. Are you going to do the pipe sizes with a 3/4" hole for the HF hydraulic setup? This is the die I made for the 3" HF punch (also shown) and I was thinking that if there was a plain 3/4" hole in both pieces it would allow you to pull the flare from either direction by using a nut instead of threading the die. What do you think?

Sure, 3/4 is no problem. Specially a thru hole, one less step for me.:) as opposed to threading.
But it won't be possible on all the sizes because were going to run out of meat on the smaller ones.
Is there a smaller adapter available for your machine that can thread on the 3/4?
Otherwise your going to have to use a bolt and nut for those.

There is a smaller mandrel that is for use with the smaller punches. Let me check it out tonight when I get home and I'll send you the dimensions.

Ok. Looks like I'll be able to get 40 sets or so out of a 12ft bar.
I aim to make all the different diameters the same lengths as these 1.0'' dimple dies. So I should end up with this number.
So far I tabulated 41 guys wanting the regular sizes and 4 who would like the pipe sizes.
If this pans out, it looks like I'll be making a second batch as soon as I'm done with the first.:wtf:

Realistically I think it's going to take about 2 weeks or so before we go on sale with a complete finished kit.

Jim, you seem quite proficient with a computer. Would it be possible for you to set up a pole on my behalf to see who wants regular sizes versus pipe sizes. I'll make it up to you when it's time for distribution.:)

Anyhow, proof I'm making progress. Here is the backside of the 1.0'' dimples I made today.

imgp6675.jpg

Stay tuned for more progress updates.

Claude

The smaller mandrel is 7/16"-20. There is a manual punch set http://www.harborfreight.com/knockout-punch-kit-91201.html that has 4 punches from 1/2" to 1 1/4" (pipe sizes) and it has both the 7/16" and 3/4" mandrels as well.

The hydraulic set has 3/4" to 2" (pipe) sizes and also uses the 7/16 mandrel for the smaller sizes. http://www.harborfreight.com/hydraulic-punch-driver-kit-96718.html

FYI - there is also a 3" (pipe) punch available from them http://www.harborfreight.com/3-inch-knockout-punch-and-die-set-96796.html

When you get ready to do the pipe sets, let me know and I will mike the actual diameters of the punches and you can apply the clearances. On second thought, I'll punch holes with them all and measure the hole diameter also. You should also match the mandrel size of the punch to the size of the hole in the dimple die so the user doesn't have to change mandrels. You can see which is which in the pictures but I'll also include the mandrel size when I send you the dimensios. I'll be gone on vacation next week so I won't be able to do it until after I get back unless you need them sooner then I can do it at night after I get home. Let me know.

Thanks again

Jim

I think that is a great idea Jim.
You can do that when you come back, I'll concentrate on the reg. sizes for now.
I'm chopping up all the mat. down to size right now. About 400 pcs......
Have a great holiday.

For some reason this is the only link to Jim's poll that works.:headscrat
The first 30 on the list will be able to get em first when I'm done....:)

I put aside 10 sets for pipe sized dimple dies. After I've made the 6 regular sized ones.

Despite having to sno-blow the yard twice, having to fill 2 last minute rush jobs for my main customer( In real life I am a commercial flight simulator parts subcontractor) hunting down my certified real-estate appraiser and dealing with the lawyer for my 15th of Feb. day in superior court date. (finally!!) and having to quote several other jobs.

I was able to figure out the proper feeds and speeds to get the dies to look and work half decently.
Here are the finished 30 sets of 1.0'' dies.

Shinny.

imgp6677.jpg

I have all the 1/2'' and 3/4'' cut down to size and most of the 1 1/4'' also.
Now that I have a method down ,it should be easier for me to figure out how to program the rest.....
Stay tuned!

That's the number I was thinking, 14 not 13. It sure does cut nicely.

I'm telling you guys - you are missing the boat by not opting for the pipe size dies and getting the HF hydraulic knockout punch set. It makes cutting the holes soooo easy and then you use the same setup to flare the hole. I have actually punched 3 thicknesses of 18 ga steel at once and it goes through it like butter.

If you want a set go sign up here at the poll http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=136269

Are there other punches available in the standard die sizes that will work with that HF hycraulic punch set?

I'm on the fence about which to get... Standard increments are so easy to lay out and design around... but that HF knock-out set sure would make life easier.

I believe the Greenlee punches will work but you will pay as much for one punch as you will for the entire HF set with the hydraulics.

I needed them yesterday!

I think I can still do them though.... thats the beauty of these having a bolt hole instead only using them in a press.

Your project looks cool man! How thick is that? I'd like to do a test here to see if there gonna take that kind of abuse.....Should work for .035 to .074 mat.
I've had my Aluminum ones for years, and there still in not bad shape.I use a little oil on them each time.

I'm going as fast as I can. Lost all morning at the lawyers....
Had both saws running at once. Running from one shop to the other between cycles...
Hit a hard spot with a brand new $60.00 blade. Grrrrrrr

Had a friend drop in to have some welding done yesterday and he liked the holes also. He has an expensive set at his shop but they are all 3 1/2 in outer diameter and he can't use them near a flange. Likes the smaller dia. of these he want's a set......But you guys were first.
He's gonna have to wait for the second batch.:)
Btw he's a race engineer/fabricator and just came back from the Paris Dakar event. They actually finished 40th out of over 300+ competitors in there class.
First time a Canadian team even got to the finish line.......busted 18 wheels getting there.

That plate is 11ga. Might be a little much, especially with just the bolt. Press would probably work though?

Most of the stuff I would need them for is 14-18 ga. Like this Jerry can holder I did. (Never mind the 'spare')
