Do Ratcheting Adapters for Wrenches Exist?

Not to be confused with ratcheting adapters for breaker bars and such.

I don't want to have to spend extra for extra long / jumbo ratcheting wrenches. Are there ratcheting adapters available in which I can insert into the box end of an extra long wrench?

Do you mean something you can insert in the box end of a wrench that would allow it to turn into a ratchet or something you can click in to make it an open ended ratcheting wrench?

How would that work? You'd get a 1/2" ratcheting adapter that fits into a 1" wrench. Doesn't seem practical to me.

I haven't ever seen any thing like that.
I think the issue would be size of wrench needes you would probably need a 1 1/2 wrench to accept a 1" adapter.

Not sure if this is what I'm looking for. I'm thinking about a non-ratcheting wrench that can be converted to a ratcheting wrench to make it easier to drive the fastener around. I think the Wera Joker wrenches are somewhat able to simulate that ratcheting effect but still requires you to lift the wrench and turn.

If something practical is available, then I don't have to look for extra long ratcheting wrenches which tend to cost over a triple digit figure.

It depends on where you look and what sizes you need. I wouldn't imagine you would need an extra long wrench for anything under like 13-14mm. So a 14-21mm set or something of the sort would be fine. Plus, most are double box end. So you get two wrenches in one. 4 wrenches and you have the spread. What do you consider too expensive for a set?

This isn't exactly what you are asking for, as it's not an adapter, but several brands have made 'speed wrenches' or 'quickwrenches' or whatever gimmicky name they came up with (I've got old sae/metric sets of Craftsman "quickwrench" like shown below) that have an open end designed to let you use a ratcheting motion to be able to turn the fastener without lifting or removing it each turn.

I only mention them because you brought up the Wera Jokers with the 12 pt open ends that, as you said "still requires you to lift the wrench and turn". These similarly work on the open end but without having to lift the wrench. They are good time-savers for turning on or off but notsomuch for breaking loose or torquing down tight. For that you're better off to flip the wrench over and use the box end.

I don't think Craftsman makes them like that any more, but not too long ago I saw they had brought back the same design in their black oxide 'mach' series of tools called 'ratcheting open end wrenches' or some such.

I've seen Snap On had similar sets at one time also. Not sure if they still do.

Craftsman marketed this too, particularly w their cordless ratchet. Can't remember their name for it?

I believe Craftsman called them 'Max Axess' and GearWrench 'Pass-Thru Vortex" but there are a gazillion other brands too and many will swap with each other.

I have a large Craftsman set of these and I'm a fan. They have worked for me quite a few times in places where the only other option would have taken forever and a day. It's can be a serious time saver to get a ratchet where a ratchet doesn't normally go.

They make them in sorts at least gear wrench makes inserts for the box end on ratchet wrenches that allow you to make it a ratchet so you can use sockets. They make them in 3 sizes for 3 size wrenches. I think they are awesome and I own the set. Check them out.

ratcheting adapters are >expensive and have >huge stack height

Those 3 points in combination defeat the point of >saving money (expensiv) and the benefits of ratcheting wrenches in the first place (no assembly of sockets, low stack height)

I've seen them but unless it's for compactness in your tool kit (which is important in some instances), I dont see the point.

The GearWrench ratcheting wrench serpentine belt set is a possible fit for what the OP wants. It's a long handle adapter that fits into one end of an included ratcheting wrench and a set of various sized thru sockets, square drives, crowsfeet a 3/8 adapter that fits into the other end of the wrench.

If you're looking for that XL reach this tool has it, and it can accept regular 3/8 and compatible thru-sockets as well.

This has a pretty low stack heght, is long, it ratchets, and its good quality, and takes up minimal box space.

Downside is it cost $250 new, and the sockets have alot of chamfer which make them unsuitable to everyday use without being kind of annoying. you also need to be careful not to back a chamfered bolt into an obstruction, as the ratchet doesn't reverse and thethere is less clearance than using a normal ratchet wrench. This setup is also not suitable to abuse as the 11mm ratchet wrench is not very strong when used with larger bolt sizes like 13/14mm.

So i think the general advice is to spend maybe 70 bucks on a small set of imports if budget is an issue. If its not an issues, lots of options abound to save space.

Why don't you just buy socket caps? They come in sets of 3, The only way your gonna turn large a standard combo wrench into a ratchet is with a welder a Palm ratchet and or ratcheting breaker bar head, and some enginuety.
