Completed the 40 Ford metalwork today and primed it. Trunk gap turned out well -

The more I look at tho, the more it tarts to look like a muppet's mouth....

Also got the SnapOn box finished! Total of 12 hours and $40 paint and primer. I hope Winnipegtibook thinks this rusty, beat up old SnapOn box is worth $640!!

Of course it looks really good in the above photo's - it's still fairly rough in places -

Couple days of drying time and I'll ship it back to adorn his "Hockey Stick" garage!

Phenomenal work on the fender, I recall watching my pops "restore" a free truck in the backyard and doing the exact same thing. I was a young'in and too busy to stop, learn and help.

Took a close look at the first flathead block I have going to the machinist:

One cylinder looked like the last guy hacked the piston out with a friggin chisel - jeez...

All the others look much better though -

This piston must have come out of that hacked up cylinder -

The rest looked good - but I won't be able to use them on this engine after the cylinders get bored....

Hopefully I can use them in the other block, which has smaller holes....we'll see. Rebuilding these things can run into the thousands if you have to replace everything....

E-Tek, just wondering if a machine shop would see any benefit (in man-hours of labor) by working your flat head blocks en masse, and give you a package deal? I imagine that the hourly rates of the machine shops that can give these hunks of iron the care they deserve are not cheap to begin with, but maybe there would be a benefit to both you and the shop to work the blocks as a mini-production run. They might see a reduced set-up time doing a series of blocks and pass that 'savings' on to you. Like I said, just wondering...

J - I think this one is already .030 over, but it was in for a hot tank and magnaflux (before I bought it), so hopefully they can clean it up by .060

I like that. I would like to do something like that with a small Turbo Diesel.
Can you imagine if I posted doing that on the HAMB what a reaction I would get . Only a few Diesel topics get good reception on the HAMB. Now that with a Sidey (Flathead) motor is going to be a great Rod. How many projects do you have on the go now Ed ?

Was measuring and working on the flatty today and did a little mock up with some stuff I had laying around -

The 40 Ford behind it is pretty much ready to go for paint. I unbolted enough so that the engine is ready to come out. Once at the shop they can pull the doors and fenders.

Owner of the 40Ford came out to go over last things before it goes into a shop for paint. Unfotunately, it's getting harder and harder to find a shop that'll do it in a reasonable time frame - for a reasonable amount!

I had thought of that a few years back - I could add a "lean-to" along the side, lotsa room in the yard....but after doing a few right to paint I realized how much I HATE sanding. So I use my time and skills for everything but, then out they go for someone else to do the dirty work. Once painted, I'll put 'em back together.

Getting down to the nitty-gritty here, doing the last few things before the 40 goes for paint, inlcuding pulling the fenders, running boards and engine....

When the car is at paint, I'll be doing some custom work on the dash -

...and fixing some of the parts that will go on after paint, like these headliner hook panels -

The cherry-picker was outside in a foot and a half of crusty snow, about 25 feet from the shop door. I ended up having to use the electric winch to pull it through the snow and into the shop. I should have taken a picture of that.

Got a bunch more done on the 40 in preparation for it's trip to the paint shop -

While the body is at the paint shop, we'll detail the engine all up - hide the wiring and hoses, paint and polish the parts. Owner also wants custom headers and to install a shift-kit, though that may have to wait until it's re-installed.

After that, I spent some quality time with the rear bumper brackets, getting them so the bumper will be tucked into the body and then lining up the holes - the torch was definitely the tool of the hour!

Being spring-steel, these things are TOUGH. After going through a couple drill bits and a then a couple of carbide bits, I pulled out the torch again and opened the ****-suckers up with fire...

A little chrome makes a big difference!

Owner wanted it just close enough to get a polishing cloth behind it -

Before I shut 'er down for the day, I did a little work on the hood (to clear the rad), welded up some interior bits and then pulled the running boards off -

Well I'm just building this one, so this block is headed to the machinist.

But I'm still tearing down this one -

Back to the 40 - today I got the running boards coated in POR15 and started the metalwork on the fenders. Of course we all know how cleaning the metal is critical before painting and these where DIRTY!

This is the perfect substrate for POR15 - rusty, rough and seasoned!

Since it's not going for paint until March, I may as well do some of the metalwork myself -

This looks like it was gas-welded long ago, so I should be able to pick it level and then metal finish it -

Some hammer and dolly work, more welding and it should be ready for some filler. I think I'll go old-school and lead it, seeing as how it's an old-school rod!

Tools, toys and freebies!!!

Got a load of great stuff today:

From Duplicolor, 2 HUGE boxes of product were dropped at my door step!

Once in a while you need a big-*** socket and these 1 1/4" to 2" deeps where on sale today. They are so big-*** they're 3/4" drive, so I also needed an adaptor - since I don't do much work on earth moving eqiupment....

Also got a new heating tip for the O/A - just because.

A while back my excellent MasterGrip Impact wrench died trying to release super-stuck steel lugs from an aluminum wheel. I replaced it with a PowerFist Brand (Princess Auto) but it sucked big time and an Impact is not something you can half-*** - so today I got the IR Big Daddy. A sure 500 ft/lbs of bolt ripping power. I may have to test it out on the 2" bolts that hold the street lamps up out front!

Of course this is all to make up for loosing control on the damn icy roads yesterday and plowing my ******* van into someones nice truck. I was only going like 30mph, but it the truck was coming the other direction at about the same, so it wrecked my bumper, fender, lights, frame horn and pushed the front end over enough to damage the hood and fender on the other side. Still driveable, but I bet it gets written off. ****.

As far as the fender bender, Yea....that would **** bigtime. Sorry to hear that. When you say that it may get written off, do you mean insurance might total it out?

The biggest thing though is that at least no one got hurt.

And you KNOW we need pics of the carnage!!!!

The only problems I have ever heard with POR15 is on NEW metal !!

So much easier these days to write of a modern car as there is so much to fix on it. Hope that one works out the best even if it means the car is a write off.

My51 Hj was hit in the back at some time and the rear bumper brackets(both sides) are about the same shape as yours so I have some work to do there as well. I thought of pulling the outside arms in towards the holes and putting the bolts in, will see how this goes.
