Thanks guys. Time will tell. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not taking in work right now.

My little ‘98 Nissan Frontier cutout the other morning on the way to the shop. It sounded like ignition so I ordered all the tune up stuff. Parts were waiting for me when I got home tonight. The truck is old enough that it’s super easy to work on. Half hour later and it’s good as new. Not bad for 220k miles and a $1400 initial investment.

Old plugs for reference:

Got started on a machining project for work tonight. Making round stabs for breaker testing. The round end goes into the back of the breaker into a spring loaded “tulip”. Other end gets connected to the high current test set. Of course copper is the best material. Co-worker and I are curious how t 6061 T6 will hold up. So.. here we go.

OP1 is in the lathe.

Working on drawing the soft jaws next. Then machine the soft jaws and then the paddle end. Once the paddle profile is done OP3 will be the four holes.

Soft jaws are done!

Point and click! 🤣

The AB Tools Shear Hog is awesome for roughing. I took things REALLY easy.

This was too cool to not post.

This is the "why" - to hold a round thing in parallel vise jaws so I can machine the other features.

Now I mount the jaws and machine the paddle.

Loving seeing the chips fly! What's the max amperage of the breakers being tested for this side project?

The Icon toolbox has three shallow drawers that are a little less deep than the 2” drawers in the US General boxes. This means the 2” Schaller bins are too tall for these drawers. This is where CAD and a 3D printer come in.

1.5” bins should be ready when I get to the shop in the morning. I think the filament costs less than the Schaller bins, and there’s no freight. Granted it does take a while for them to print, but it’s passive and it’s very low effort.

Nice! Reminds me I've got to get the printer up and running again as soon as I've cleared up the space for it.
Looking good.

It's funny. The printer will go long stretches where I don't use it at all. Then an idea comes along and it's going non-stop for a couple weeks. It definitely is a nice addition to the shop.

Made some progress on the air system upgrades today. Moved the regulator, soft start valve and stage 1 and 2 filters behind the compressor. This is the inlet to the refrigerated dryer

The filter inlet valve and filter bodies are easily accessible, along with the dryer control panel. The outlet will the go to the desiccant which will be on the right wall, tying into the existing system. The bypass valve will be on the right as well. It took some noodling to get it figured out with as small of footprint as possible

The pressure regulator will be accessible on the left side on the wall. It’s a set once sort of thing. Should work well.

The 3D printed bins look great! I really gotta get Octoprint going, just haven't had the time.

When you get it going I think you're going to love it....so much handier! Literally just sliced and sent this to printer in a couple of minutes without leaving the chair which when the printer is down 2 flights of stairs is super handy!

Compressed air progress looking great! Never realized how important clean/dry air was to them until had to fix some issues with one at a prior job that was due to air quality issues that nothing else had any issues with. The "bypass loop" to allow air while the filters are under maintenance is a great "insurance" step....if you do it you won't need it but if it's cut from scope you'll kick yourself down the road. Had a similar setup with a bypass loop a couple of houses ago on a 2 stage sediment filter and UV treatment for the well water

Down to a few details. Ran out of the strut cushion clamps. More on the way. The plumbing is otherwise finished for this part of the project. I will have to get air to the plasma source and the new machines.

CA2A832E-0FAA-4A7C-9234-CF95E3727451.jpeg

Final with the compressor rolled in to place.

F76B98E9-F5D8-48CA-AD95-E5DEEE1428C8.jpeg

The compressor can be rolled out with the pallet jack without much effort and without disconnecting the electrical. Just loosen the air connection at the tank and it rolls right out.

I'm happy I was able to keep it compact. Space on the walls gets tight quick.

I feel like a broken record recommending OctoPrint. I'm sure folks get tired of reading about it.. It really makes the printer usable in my opinion. Straight from the slicer to the printer.

The bypass is a must. I want to bypass the filtration and dryer when I don't need it. Will make a big difference with consumable life. And, I can use my air when I'm changing consumables or any other reason I want the filtration out of the loop. It wasn't a big deal to add it in.

I should have this buttoned up today.'

As always thanks for following along and contributing to the conversation guys!

Made the soft jaws for the other size breaker stab. Went well. I’m getting more comfortable (a little anyway) with feeds and speeds. Pushed the roughing tool quite a bit more

I did the manual lathe operation the other day. Went well, held plenty good tolerance.

Here’s the first one ready for OP2.

I think you need to add a wire and sinker EDM and you will have a well outfitted machine shop. You keep this up and you might have to add some power to your shop.

Merry Christmas!
