Re: Eastern Washington Workshop

It’s snowing like crazy today. Yay for federal holidays in the shop where it’s warm.

Hope the power grid having challenges due to demand doesn't crimp your day in the shop like is happening for Texas and Oklahoma!

I'm sitting next to the largest power generation plant on the continent. We *usually* don't have power issues here. The occasional outage from vegetation on the distribution side and line slaps in very high winds is about all we see. One of the upsides to living in this tiny town.

Nice! And it's hydropower so no air pollution!

We're getting snow out here in the Midwest too along with brutal cold. My electrical bill next month is going to ****! I think I need to go lower the setting on my garage heater to save a couple hundred bucks.

I didn't expect too many issues as you're not seeing the cold the midwest is...but I was talking to customers in Portland on Friday and with the snow they were either elated or terrified of the upcoming weekend. They generally stopped complaining when they asked how the weather was for me!

Re: Eastern Washington Workshop

I hung the digitizing table on the wall last year. At the time I thought I was kicking the table I built for it down the street. Well.. it’s back in its old home with a new, low buck top. 3/4 black melamine. I sprayed the exposed edges with Marsh black ink. The ink is cool stuff. Dries almost instantly. Excellent coverage and nice color.

Here’s a sanded edge of Baltic birch with the ink.

Re: Eastern Washington Workshop

Wife asked me to make a 2.5” riser for her stand up desk. I had a chunk of 1” Baltic birch that already had black Formica on it. I sprayed the edges with Marsh black ink. It’s crazy how well this stuff works. Once I saw it was working well on the edges, i shot the underside with it.

The standoffs were machined out of some 1.25” 6061 I had on hand. It was a fun project machining all four the same. The heights are within “0.004 across all four parts. Counterbored the screw holes so the screws had the right amount of stick out. Cut the rubber pads out of snap back on the laser and CA glued in place.

Overall the project is super solid, looks nice and most importantly the Wife will love it!

Steven, projects are looking great, as usual. Making things for your wife is a great way to make your marriage last. Another one is to remember the important dates. I have several methods to remind me and I'll probably survive if I forget our 59th anniversary next month. On the other hand, if I forget next year it will be on my tombstone.

Bob - I agree. I enjoy making things for her. She seems to really like it as well. As far as dates go, my brain is naturally wired to remember dates. That part is easy. I have plenty of other challenges ;)

Nice project, and I like the ink idea, will have to look into that.

Agree not to forget dates, just passed 31 years. Anniversary is between daughter's birthday and wife's birthday. If I forget one I forget them all and I'm dead.

What is the plan for this thing?

JB

The 327 that came in the car ran well and had a leaking freeze plug. Engine is out to re-seal, replace freeze plugs and convert from TH400 to a T5 5 speed. Among many other updates and upgrades. I want a reliable driver, which is what I was told I bought. I liked the chop and bought it anyway. The 327 will get a new intake and Holley Sniper EFI w/spark. I plan to replumb everything as well. The rest of the list: hydraulic clutch setup, brake power booster, electric wipers, vintage air a/c, complete re-wire, new cooling system, sorting out the door glass and wing windows and a lot more I'm sure I'm forgetting.

I cross post the '54 stuff here and in a thread about the car.

Is a 6spd out of the question? I get that 5spds are easier to get, but it seems like a 6spd would be worth the extra effort.

Re: Eastern Washington Workshop

Six speed was never a consideration. It’s a cruiser, not a performance car. I had thought about a TKO 5 speed, but it’s a ton of money and I think the T5 is going to work out really well for this car. Once the car is driving I’ll decide if I need to change the rear axle ratio as a final step. I’m excited to get the T5 in the car.

After I installed the Sniper I had a loud ticking that was coming from the built in fuel pressure regulator. I had to install a pulsation damper in the fuel line. I went with a damper made by Marren Fuel Injection.
It reduced the noise but did not eliminate it, kind of sounds like a valve tick.
I like the sniper system, I hope this can help you.

Re: Eastern Washington Workshop

I haven’t loved where the lathe landed since I got it. Decided today was the day to try a new location. I think this will work better.

Now I can roll the ‘54 into the machinery bay when I want to use the lift.

I’m on the fence about sending the gantry down the road. I think I’m at a place where I can live without it.

For the most part, the 2 post lift. I have rolled things off the truck bed onto plywood clamped to the lift arms and lowered to the ground. Heavier stuff tends to come in on the trailer and then I rent a forklift to unload. Once things are inside I have enough rigging supplies to move things around. I moved the lathe yesterday by myself for example. I haven't used the gantry a whole lot since moving into this shop. It takes up a lot of space around the legs. I've considered letting it go for a long time. I think I'll be good without it. I'm really liking the new layout so far. I went in on an old forklift with a couple buddies a while back. It will be a while before it's up and running. But, that is also part of the plan.

Re: Eastern Washington Workshop

Took in a small project for a friend. He fabricated a console for his two seater plane and needed a lid for it. I don’t use wood in cars (or planes or anything else for the most part). All composite, brass threaded inserts and stainless fasteners. Simple and he’s happy with it.

I’ve wanted to get the second row of lights up in Bay 2 for YEARS. I finally got it done. I am so happy with the change. It’s crazy how much of a difference it made.

There's a lot of win in that picture....if it was mine and I didn't have family commitments I might be tempted to toss a cot in there and stay!

Congrats...it's an awesome space and love following along on what you're doing both on the shop and in the shop!

Re: Eastern Washington Workshop

More maintenance on the wife’s Honda CR-V adventure rig. New struts all around and tie rod assemblies. Waiting on a 29mm crows foot to remove the inner tie rod ends. It’s really clean and easy to work on. Kinda fun having the lift.

Also ran power to the lift. No more extension cord across the floor.

Shop is really dialed in. I need to install the lathe receptacle and that’s about it on the short list.

I haven't been taking in customer work with the exception of small stuff for locals and friends here and there. I have a bench seat I'll be doing sometime this summer. I'll be sure to post photos when I get started on it.

Very impressed with your two building projects! And isn't it great that you have the skills
to do the bulk of the work involved? This would cost a fortune to have it all farmed out!
But let's be honest; it's something of a "Labor of Love", eh?

(May have an interior job for you in the near future on my old hot rod Ford coupe, if
interested in old school styles)

Looks very purdy. Gonna run long tube headers, block huggers, or manifolds? I take it you're going to run a either FI or a Holley (I can't remember if you told us earlier).

Original to the engine rams horn exhaust manifolds. Thinking I want to get them coated. Going to run Holley Sniper EFI.

I like the direction, especially if you can kind of hide most of the fuel injection wiring/extra components. Period look with much better reliability.
