What a awesome thread! I do most of my tool purchases from here or eBay & stoked to see a thread like this. I'm trying to find a 13 mm case combination wrench to complete a set & 1/2 snap ratchet (old style) cheap just to use.

I have a little Dayton 1/4" drive ratchet and I believe it is made by Wright. Good stuff!

^ re: Dayton -
I could not find anything on "Dayton" with Google. all I can make out from those photos in the ad is "Chicago" on the label inside the lid on the box.

Dayton is a Grainger brand. They just put their names on stuff, not unlike Craftsman.

Some of the nerdier folk on here could probably tell you who mfg'ed it, and from what era too.

The way that the ratcheting assembly is held into the body is exactly like how Wright does it.

This is the seller and deal I posted about up earlier in the thread. We never could confirm for sure these were US made - may have been Canada. But I have a set and can say they are very nice with good chrome and no rough edges or anything. This set is NOT the lousy Herbrand of later years in the Triangle era, but good stuff. I'm not sure on the breakers - they may be from the later era or those other sockets. - Paul

^ I don't know a lot about Herbrand, unfortunately.

I was puzzled when I found all the listings for the Herbrand "made in Canada" stuff.

The made in Canada Herbrand is still very good stuff, I'd say about the same as US, but shortly after they made them there, in the late 70's Triangle bought Herbrand and made things from non-US or Canada countries and quality was not good at all. I put US or Canada Herbrand up against anything though. - Paul

so... the 1/4" drive sockets I posted above, all of which appear to have a triangle stamped on them but do not appear to be marked with a country of origin, are offshore-sourced?
how does one identify which are which?

pauls workshop:
re: Herbrand

after doing some poking around, it looks like Herbrand's original facility in Fremont, Ohio was closed in the early 1960s:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=174928

the 1966 catalog shows their production having been moved to Orangeberg, South Carolina:

https://archive.org/details/Herbrand1966ToolCatalog

...and then at some point production was moved to Toronto, Canada.

according to "Dave", Herbrand was still a viable entity in 2000:

http://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=toolt&th=4960

...but went out of business sometime between 2000 and 2007:

http://www.practicalmachinist.com/v...mechanics-hand-tools-50s-through-70s-125087/?

I'm not anything seeing that says they were out-sourcing anything from Asia, though.
None of the photos in any of those Ebay ads I cited above shows anything indicating COO - only the little triangle.

Yes, that isn't in the info above you had reposted, but widely known Triangle messed up Herbrand and did outsource. But where and when exactly is not clear to me. If someone knows when the Canada mfg was shut down, that would help. - Paul

Also, just to be honest, the Wilde made in USA socket/rachet set may or may not be USA:

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99663

Not Wilde's fault, but Stanley/Danaher made a number of sockets rachets for others and called Taiwan made in US. Got in trouble over that twice. Wilde didn't make their own sockets or rachets but rebadged them. Still probably very good stuff and fine for the auction price there. I don't know if "all" the US badged Wilde sockets/rachets were in fact made overseas or if only "some" of them were, so just can't be certain. - Paul

Top to Bottom:
#2850 Indestro 1/4" drive breaker bar (probably 1950s vintage)
#2766 Proto 1/4" drive breaker bar (purchased a couple years ago)
#23006 Herbrand 1/4" drive breaker bars (recently acquired NOS)

The only markings on the Herbrands are the part number, "Herbrand" and the small triangle logo.
While they appear to be fairly well-made and nicely finished, they are considerably thicker through the shank and handle compared to other makes, as well as being heavier. (Although compared to some of the Craftsman models I'd say that it would be a toss-up.)

T to B: Indestro 2850, Proto 4766, Herbrand 23006 1/4" drive breaker bars by four.cycle, on Flickr

I haven't received the sockets yet. I hope they look as nice as the breaker bars do.
I've sold cheezy tools: Globemaster, Oxwall, Zomax, Wilmar (now "Performance Tool"), and I most definitely would not put these Herbrand specimens into that same category by any means.

(* The old Indestro and my new Proto were the only ones that were immediately at hand. I've got many others but they're kind of buried right now.... girlfriend made me move tools out of the kitchen because it was Christmas.)

Out of curiosity, what are you guys using the 1/4" breaker bar on? They look nice but I don't think I'd ever use them

schino, that question has come up in other threads several times.
I use mine quite frequently, believe it or not. But almost all my wrenching now is on lawnmowers, not cars.
Some guys use them regularly, some have no need for them.
Same as with "speeder" handles.

not my auction, but this is a hoot!

if you ever wanted a real $42 genuine Snap-On OEXM170B 17mm long profile wrench, here is a brand new one with no markings for $10

I have bought these from this auction in the past, and as someone who owns the genuine OEXM170B - I can assure you they are the real deal, and first quality, just completely unmarked.

They provide hours of evil fun exposing folk's brand bias!

here is what you do, take this wrench to your local Snap-On fan boy professional mechanic, and ask him to try it out, telling him that it is Harbor Freight's new "Stealth" line and you would like his impression of how well it works vs. his Snap-on, and he will come back say something like, "it seems adequate for China ****, but cannot touch my real Snap-On wrench" (little does he know that he is holding a real Snap-On OEXM170B in his hand!) :eyecrazy:

PS - don't try this with some tool guru like Fedwrench, he will see right through your ruse as soon as the wrench hits his hand.

Very cool, thanks for sharing.

Quick question: I saw that the seller offers this wrench in two (and only two) sizes, 17mm and SAE 11/16. And 11/16 comes out at 17.46mm. Some people are very open (or "tolerant") to using SAE on metric screws or nuts because some sizes come indeed quite close (e.g., 3/4 = 19.05m), so some people seem to use SAE wrenches for some metric sizes and vice versa. Because some people think that way, I am curious to know if the seller may just have the wrench in one size and then claims he has a 17mm as well as a 11/16 (at the end of the day, it is not stamped, right...?). This being said, before I order one, do you think you might be willing to measure the open end of the wrench, just to make sure it is really 17mm? My apologies for bothering you with this...

Thanks a ton!
