Those Pro-Merica pliers failures do look like a ductile overload, no fatigue evident, so simply overloaded for the strength available (which of course, should not be the case). Yes, cast, not forged. Cast by itself isn't horrible as I know even Snap-On has a few cast pliers too in recent years, but they won't be quite as strong as a good forging unless heat treated well to make up for it. It looks like a defect or inclusion may have been present in those from the beginning. This can happen to anyone in any brand, but are others out there having any problems? I'm an ME on the side, and while not a metallurgist, I have had failure analysis classes, so can tell some things from looking at failure photos. Great example to share Rick. - Paul

I was thinking about your post above and the photo and it brought to mind a discussion about a broken wrench in another recent thread here.
It also reminded me of another incident:
Years ago, I gave my mother a brand-new Case ** 10" chef's knife for Christmas. Premium-quality US-made steel cooking knife. Not cheap.
First time out of the drawer, it snapped in half when she went to slice up a boiled potato. Damn near cut her thumb off in the process too.

Like that knife (which I returned and got one to replace it, which is still in service to this day - decades later), your pliers snapping on something like an electrical connector is a one-in-a-million fluke: just like the broken wrench in the other thread.

A manufacturer can have QC controls all down the line, but there simply isn't really any way to "test" every unit coming off the line - it's just not practicable.

Clean break like that: some flaw in the metal. It happens. I used to see it every now and then on brand-new sockets and wrenches when I was selling Indestro and Thorsen. Doesn't mean the tool manufacturer is cranking out junk - just means you got one defective unit.

Yes, that is what I was suggesting. BUT, have others had any problems? If so, it could indicate a more general quality issue, perhaps with those particular pliers or the family of them. - Paul

Just a thought, the name/markings would have been stamped in prior the the finishing operations, like plating ... if they were rejected prior to stamping why would they spend the money/effort to finish the wrench. Also they are not flank drive ...

There are a couple of eBay Sellers (based in Massachusetts), selling unmarked Snap-On wrenches. Would like to know if they are legit.

considering the name is stamped into the wrench before the box end is bent or broached Id be very suspicious, snap on never lets defective tools leave the factory if its caught something like this would have been scrapped

I bought both the 11/16" and the 17mm wrench from the ebay guy claiming they are snap-on. I then compared the 17mm to a buddy of mines 17mm Snappy. They did look identical. Neither the 11/16" or the 17mm are flank drive + on the open end though but then you can get snap on without flank drive +. Also I forget which one but I think it was the 11/16" on the open end it had a slight beveling on the open end to facilitate it going onto a fastener quicker. I am pleased with the wrenches but I have not had a chance to use them but just a couple of times and nothing on anything that any cheap wrench wouldn't handle without any problems. I see he has a 1/2" up for sale now and I have made him a offer on one of those but he has not accepted it yet. One other thing the degree of angle on the boxed end did match up with the for sure genuine 17mm i compared it against.

Thoughts: I think new batches of snap on wrenches are laser etched and not stamped. So is it possible that these are new batches that are 2nd's and they did not make it to the laser etching phase of production?

Or could they have been some kind of bulk purchase deal for some major company who wanted say a few thousand of the wrenches in these sizes and did not want any warranty and did not want snappys name on them for fear of them being stolen? If a big company placed a big order I could see snappy running a batch blank.
