Epoxy Flooring Wanted / Recommendations Needed

Hey guys,

New here but I am wanting to coat my garage floor. It's a new home we built in March of 2012. It's pretty clean and somewhat smooth. I'm in Vegas so not a lot of humidity (pretty much none) and I am seeing 65-75degree days right now. The plan is to get it done soon. The garage does face south but I keep the door closed unless I'm in there working.

I want something high gloss, maybe metallic in it, thick, and can be able to handle jack, jack stands and being worked on and beat on but I want it nice looking. I was thinking of not using any flake. I like the high gloss look but need it durable. It would be nice to slide around easier when under my car.

It's my 2 car garage at home and is 400sq/ft (391 to be exact). From what I have read I need a primer, base-coat then top coat. Also read something about needing to use 100% solids. Also understand it has a shorter pot-life. Not too concerned about budget. More interested in quality. With everything mentioned can someone recommend me a brand and or tips tricks.

I'll need some of the tools too like spike shoes, squeegee etc.

And pics of the queen that gets worked on just because.... well everyone likes pics right?

Just thought I would add that I'm looking for something nice and maybe even exotic looking. Kind of like this but my real question is what brand to go with. Yes I'm a garage floor noob and please don't search police me to death. :p

http://allgaragefloors.com/metallic-garage-floor-epoxy/

Looking for something light to medium gray and more subtle not very over the top. And the floor will never be wet so slippery when wet isn't an issue.

My floor may work for you,,?

Here is the 100% solids system I used. You can just omit the flecks, this system has been out at least since 2007 that I know of.

The system I used as follows:
1) Concrete Floors (Shop and Machine Area) (Decorative Flake Floor)

Surface Preparation: ICRI-CSP3. This is the scarification of the concrete to remove all poorly adhered laitance on the surface of the concrete and to provide a surface profile (I used a 7inch hand diamond grinder above). The floor was clean and dry prior to coating. Filled all control joints with Series 215 Surfacing Epoxy.

1st Coat: Series 201 Epoxoprime applied at – 12.0 dry mils
2nd Coat: Series 237 Power-Tread in 33GR Gray applied at 12.0 dry mils. While the coating is wet, broadcast random decorative flakes into the wet coating. (20 lbs)
3rd Coat: Series 284 Deco-Clear applied at 12.0 dry mils
4th Coat: Series 248 Everthane clear applied at 2.0 – 3. Dry mils

The application guide can be found here > http://www.tnemec.com/product/stratashield/ You can get data sheets for coverage also.

Since this is an industrial/professional product and not marketed for residential use, you will have to purchase it from their distribution network.

Here is the guy who did mine:
http://www.centormall.com/Ultimate_garage_floors/index.htm

Here is my garage floor in Bend, OR. It is tan with brown & white flakes.
It was installed in 2008 and cost $3300.00. It is a 3 car garage.
Call Greg. He did a great job.
Go to 3rd, 4tn, 5th, & 6th row to see the floor.

We're def on the same page. You floor looks awesome! Being so green at this I was overwhelmed by all the options of Tnemec but they look to have high quality stuff. Just don't think I am that advanced yet.

So new to this stuff and was hoping a vendor would chime in. No dice so made lots of calls. Seems like all the Epoxy gurus are on the east coast.

Called Legacy 3 times over 3 days and no one answers. (probably due to time difference. Not knocking yall, all I hear is good things about you guys.)

Called Epoxy-Coat and Cathy said "to go do more research then call back" lol. (yes Christine I did ask for you but you were already gone for the day)

Called TheGarageGuy- they were great and helpful but I did not know that they only do installs. They don't sell products. Shout out to them though for being helpful and doing great work!

Now being a little discouraged, called Pure-Metallic and have been dealing with Andy AKA TheEpoxyGuru. This guy is GREAT! He has spent a lot of time with me over the phone and really took the time to educate me.

With all that said I am moving forward with Pure Metallic brand metallic epoxy 100% solids. Will be doing 4 coats using Storm Cloud Metallic base with Storm Cloud effects. I like that they do a thinner primer (to get deeper into the concrete) and the 3 layers on top will be 100% solids.

I'll be keeping this thread updated with pics and progression. I will be doing the work and the end of this month.

Workhurts & Pieface- thanks for the work you guys ahve done and posted on here. That really helped me out too:thumbup:

I would do a full broadcast system and checkout some of the high end flakes / chips that are available to make your floor stand out. I would do a a second top coat and I would maybe even look at embedding a graphic into part of the floor.

They will be here soon!

Torchy:

We have some great products to review as the boys mentioned.
My suggestion for a tough UV resistant floor in gray (light, med. or dark):

Standard Epoxy Primer @ 300 sq ft per gal
SD 100% solids epoxy coating @ 100 sq ft per gal
HD322 HP Pigmented Urethane @ 350 sq ft. per gal

Good luck.

Thank you for the suggustion but I had already bought before you posted.

I ended up going with metallic epoxy. I did think the glow in the dark paint chips were cool though.

I am going to create a install thread so be on the look out guys:thumbup:
