Glad you both are ok. I get to Clay county occasionally and was tracking their Coronavirus status. Glad you didn't get it. Relax and recuperate, spend time together, projects will wait. I just poured the cement for my new shop. Watching you work through details helped my planning. Thanks for posting your journey.

I got back to work this past weekend.
I had a 20' container on the property that we referred to as "Base Camp". I have moved the container twice in the last 2 years and now that I have a shop building, it was time to move the container for the last time and break down base camp. I moved the container about 40' with the Bobcat and the ground got too soft and the little machine didn't have the grunt needed to move the container any further. I called a friend and he came with his Kabota and we managed to each take an end and pick it up and move it to it's final location next to the shop building.
Then I Laura and I moved the HF car tent in front of the container.
Last night we vacuumed a string into the conduit from the meter to the shop and used that string to pull another string so that we could get an accurate measurement for the length of the service cable we need to get so that the shop will have power. I plan on getting and pulling the service cable next monday.

That Harbor freight carport tent has really held up well, or is it just an illusion? Might have to check them out.
The HF carport has been blown apart by the wind several times before I got serious about keeping it tied down. The ground stakes that came with it are a joke. With the tent next to the container, I used the container on one side to tie it to and skid steer attachments on the other side.

The one I had the longest I took self drilling screws and put in all the joints. It held up for 3 years, then an ice storm did it in.

rmack, mybig, thanks for the info. I'm always suspect of fabric shelter/awnings. I've had a couple that didn't last a year, where the fabric sun rotted.

Ed has one of the HF that is at least 5 yrs old. Doing quite well. His doesn’t get a lot of sun but has been through 2 hurricanes.

The HF car tent is a gem. Good point Willie on screwing the tubes together, with any luck I've been through my last ice storm.

G, I plan on using crushed concrete around the shop and in front of the container. The guy that bought the lot next to me is the guy that owns the redi-mix plant in town and also the crushed concrete plant and we have become friends.
I didn't want grass around the house but Laura did. I told her that she would have to cut it as I was done with that and she agreed. I'm not buying a new zero turn mower for Laura but............. I am fixing up a 45 year old Wheel Horse garden tractor for her to cut the grass with. It was sitting in storage for the last 15 years. Drained out the stale gas, cleaned out the carb, installed a new battery and it fired right up. It didn't run for long so I ordered some parts for it and they arrived today.
A carb kit, spark plug, air filter, points, and condenser. While working on the motor I discovered a mouse nest in the fan shroud. It took a few hours to get everything all done but the old Wheel horse runs like a champ. I need to get some new bearings for the spindles on the mower deck and it will be good for another 40 years. Now I just need to teach Laura how to run it.

I bought my better half a new mower, the latest Makita rechargable yard tools, and still wind up doing the yard 50% or more. I hate yard work. Maybe she's a better planner than me.........

It's been a while since I did an update and I have been busy although not all of my efforts have been shop related.
I have been undecided about what to do for inside walls in the shop and after way too may sleepless nights thinking about it and reading other builds, I finally made a decision and started to move forward. I am going to use OSB for the walls up to 8' and then use liner panels from that point up to the ceiling.
That was a major decision that enabled me to move forward in the shop build. I decided to use metal studs to frame the walls and attach the OSB to the metal stud walls.
With that decision made, I bought material and made progress forward. We bought a bunch of metal studs and track to build a wall. We sheathed it with 1/2" OSB. I have one section done and am having second thoughts about continuing with the metal studs. While they are quite easy to work with they are not very rigid and the screws strip through the thin metal very easily. I may very well do the next section with wood studs.
We bought 4/0 and 2/0 aluminum XHHN cable and pulled it in our already installed conduit and now have sparktricity in the shop. The only circuit I have right now is a 4 gang receptacle, but that is so much better than having an extension cord running 150' across the yard. I plan to get 2 recepticales for welding machines installed in the next few nights so the welding section of the shop will be operational this weekend.
The house has been taking most of my time and I only have to pick up and lay 3 more pallets of sod and that should take care of the immediate grounds around the house for a while.

Hey there he is. Nice update Mack.
On the grass, if you’re laying centipede plus with the right watering/rain, you’d be amazed at how quickly it spreads and fills in.
I like the idea of metal studs. I wonder if the stripped screws are from to much torque or wrong screws.

I'm not a fan of metal studs either. I've only used them where code requires it.
Glad to see you're making some progress. Can't wait for the house/shop-warming event.

I Pulled my 175’ with a four wheeler. Son on wheeler , wife guiding wire as it came out of pull box, I was lubing and feeding into conduit at shop and my daughter was running between as a messenger.
On screwing the wood, try doing a shallow countersinking of the wood, my experience has been there’s not enough material in the studs to pull screw head into wood, where drywall is a different story.

I have been busy as hell, but not on the shop. The shop is pretty much at a stand still until I refill the fun money piggy bank.
Now that I have power in the shop I have been doing some small side jobs to fund the next phase of the shop build.
We have been getting some major projects on the house and grounds completed. We just finished a 2-week tile project. we ripped out the drywall around the fireplace and TV insert wall in the great room and tiled it from floor to ceiling.
We finished multiple landscaping projects that were all labor intensive.
Since all the pool contractors are back-logged for months, I decided to do the pool and pool cage myself, I'm pretty happy with how it came out.
We have a new family member and she will be moving in with us a week from Saturday, her name is Etta.
I should be ready to start the next phase of the shop by August 1st.
Now that I have power in the shop I have been doing some small side jobs to fund the next phase of the shop build.

Ballin' pool. Better than mine anyway. I just sweat til I look like i jumped in fully dressed.
Thanks guys, we really like the pool. It will suffice until we dig a deeper hole.
While the shop is still incomplete, I am starting to get some work though the shop.
This may be a Florida thing but I can't see it as being a bad design choice anywhere else. I have a 20'x40' covered overhang outside the overhead doors to the shop. It is a concreted surface and I refer to it as the "Front Porch", and I do most of my work out there. It can be raining and I can still be working outside. I think this is the singular best design feature I added to this ne shop.
I'm doing some barter work for the bamboo farmer next door. I fixed up his trailer and now I'm doing some work to his mower deck. Cropping out bad metal and inserting some patch panels. He has planted a nice privacy fence of clumping bamboo around the house for us. Part of the barter deal with him is that he has to bring me referral paying jobs. It's working out well for both of us.

I have worked outdoors enough, when I have a shop I will be working indoors on everything that will fit. I have sweated enough for a whole army of people.
I would rather barter and trade than anything else. I learned the hard way to get my end first then do the work for the other guy. I have had to repossess my work a couple of times.

I have had to re-posses my work a few times in the past and it was never pretty, although I can tell you that I never got the short end of the stick.
I did however watch 40+ hours of my work go up in flames because some deadbeat decided not to pay me, I enjoyed the fire.

Mac, the porch is a requirement here in Fl. I added 12’ to the front on my shop 5 years ago and now I do almost everything out there. I’m always wondering how I survived without it. It’s nice not to have to roll down the door in a storm.
A crane of some sort would be nice out there.

The bamboo fence is growing at at amazing rate, I watched a new shoot grow from 2" to 24" in 3 days. I am literally watching grass grow ( bamboo is a grass),

Mac, I have to agree the Front Porch is a great feature. Mine is the temporary one you had before the shop was completed. I don't do a whole lot in the middle of the day but the oak trees provide shade and drop the temperature below Africa- hot in the summer. It has turned into a more permanent fixture than I originally thought.

I'm another advocate for the porch. Add a decent sized fan or two and it becomes a very usable space.
And only a few more months until you want to work inside. Maybe.... With recent climate change i can work outside pretty much all year round.
