Facom's History : ;)

facpx.jpg

Facom (Franco Américaine de Construction d’Outillages Mécaniquesis) the largest European manufacturer of professional grade hand tools. Since its establishment in 1918, Facom has distinguished itself by providing high quality, innovative, and ergonomically designed tools. Most of their products are still manufactured in Facom's 11 French and European factories, with the remaining products produced in partnership with manufactures working to Facom's higher specifications. Facom provides over 6,500 products to meet all standard and specialist tool needs. Facom has partnered with world class companies and racing teams such as Airbus, Peugeot Sport, KTM, Mitsubishi Motor Sport, and of course F1 Scuderia Ferrari.

For some reason, Facom only offers their deep 3/8 and 1/2 drive sockets in 12pt in their sets except for the module version (this is a mix of 3/8 and 1/2 deep sockets).

The pricing of that Ebay set is excellent at $109 considering they go up to 32mm. SD

Re: Sockets

I bought that set from that seller about a year ago. No COO markings on the sockets so I think you have to assume they are NOT France. Quality is typical Facom, however. Insides of the sockets are nicely finished and painted silver.

At the time I was buying I corresponded with the seller. He said he was one of the high bidders on several lots of Facom tools that went up for grabs when SK and Facom parted ways back in 2005 (?). I don't know if that jives with Facom's move to push some production over seas.

If you can wait, put that auction on you watch list. He's dropped the price to $89 once or twice over the past months.

I would probably prefer 6-point as that's what I've been buying lately, but I have them elsewhere if I need them.

Though there is plenty of 12 point in my shop box, and these would likely be a good match for the 12-pt. Armstrong deep sockets that are coming as part of a surplus kit I purchased.

Thanks for that input. I'd like to buy them but I can wait, and $20 less makes them an even better deal!

I looked more closely, this set skips a few of the smaller sizes, but I have them elsewhere, and I really like that it goes large.

Not Falcom, but this would be another choice, and it only skips 29 & 31mm, a very nice, complete set, but $100.00 more shipped. I'll think about it.

Well that explains the low price, not surprised.

I just looked at Sears/Craftsman online... they don't appear have a set with only what I'm looking for, and it's surprisingly expensive. Their site is nearly as much a turn-off as visiting a store, I guess I just want/demand more as a customer.

This Falcom or my new preferred S-K still seems a good choice.

Most of Facom's sockets are being made in Taiwan these days....quality is excellent and in some cases, the finish is better than the old items out of France. Ratchets are from Italy, most pliers and screwdrivers made in France.

Facom is like Snap-on in that their tool line is very deep and crosses more than simple automotive solutions. They offer a lot of trade specific tools for aviation, hvac, electrical and electronics, and general industrial. Close to 28,000 part numbers in their system (including repair parts).

Does anyone else make a jack like that with a mechanical interlock? Would be very useful for quick jobs where you don't want to bring out the stands.

Yeah this looks like a new product -- I don't see it in Maryland Metric's Facom catalog. It also looks very similar to the Griot's jack (almost certainly made by Mega), but it's not on Mega's web site.

Really curious if this will be available in the states, as it's a really unique and useful item -- would be extremely useful on vehicles with only four jacking points (e.g. modern mini coopers). I don't think anybody else makes a jack like this.

 Nice. How does the pear heads compare to the round heads. Stiffer, softer, same?

I have the S153A myself.

Ahh... Nice one Robbie, You'll definitely be happy with those Facoms. Where did you get
them from in the end..?

I also have all 5 of those Facom ratchets and the pair heads are particulaly fantastic.
Really smooth and feel very strong. They also have really compact heads compared
to every other pair head I've seen, and the way the shaft merges in with the handle
makes them the most comfortable ratchets I have ever used. Facom hit the bullseye
with theese puppies. By a long way they are my favouroite ratchets.

Those look like quality tools; how much did they cost and what about those ribbed rubber handles? Are they comfortable? I will never see a used or new facom tool where I live; so, I thought I would ask! :)

Hey Billy, if you're just frefering to the flex heads, the 3/8" and 1/2" both go for about
£55 each Which is about $90.

They aren't cheap, but they are superb quality, and very compact fine tooth heads.
The handles are quite comfortable, they are a hard rubber, and much better than a
plain steel handle, very hard wearing and you can put allot of torque on them and not
hurt your hand.

I don't know how they compare to the Snappy comfort handle as I don't have one
but it would nice to have a comparison from someone who has used both.

Hi Rico - Prime Tools as the 1/2" was £47.95 inc del, which seemed pretty reasonable. The ratchet action is smoother than than the sealed pear heads, even when fresh out of the packaging. The pear heads took a little use to become truly smooth.

Shame they don't do a 1/4" drive in the same range.

Excelent stuff, I have bought quite allot of Facom from Primetools and always been happy.
I share your wish for a 1/4" version. I did my sisters cam belt last week and one would have
been perfect due to the silly small gap I had to work with. Fortunaltely a deep offset spanner
did the trick.

I don't think there are any ratchets made that are smoother than a Facom round head,
although I have to say the 3/8" pear head out of my three was amazingly smooth out
of the box.

Happy spannering Rob, they will serve you well for decades.

According to Facom the pear head ratchets are absolutely the strongest and most durable ratchets on the market, so how can you go wrong with those? ;)

Anyhow, they are part of Facom's spring campaign and are mighty tempting. Probably gonna buy a 440 wrench set and some other stuff. Have to see about those ratchets... I have only 30 some ratchets yet. :lol_hitti

So, with the links; one said the COO is Italy... what is the COO on the currently shipping ratchets? I appreciate European tools from afar; most of theses brands just do not offer the support that is offered in Europe; which is a shame... I wonder when these companies will step up to the plate and bring the same service to us over here in the USA? For our European friends that own and use Facom; do you experience the kind of support and warranty that is shown in the Facom videos? Also, do they supply rebuild kits for free under warranty, do you just send them in for replacement or do you have to buy the kits (also what about the handle, pivot bolt/pin etc.)? If that is the case; Facom looks like a nice tool and brand to buy if one is in Europe! :)

billymade, I own many Facom tools bought "stateside" and absolutley love them.

Ratchets, screwdrivers and breaker bars.

Most are France COO, but the new Czech comfort grips are still eons above most as are the driver tips.

I still also keep a Facom lug wrench (in 17mm, 19mm and 21mm) in each appropriate car I own and each lug wrench has a France COO , all with that same waffle/honey dipper black rubber grip mentioned above.

Warranty is the only issue in the Americas. If you want a good tool, go for it. Totally worth it as I've had mine for 20 years.

I need to place an order with the NJ dealer but what Facom sells is a very viable alternative to those that have access to the tools.

The thing with Facom is, unlike Snap-On, they sell their tools through dealer networks, just
like most products. Which means they are available in good tool shops everywhere and
online, as well as trucks too. All the round head ratchets are made in Facom's factory in Italy.

As far as the warranty is concerned, you can either take it to your dealer, be that a shop
or a truck, for replacement or send it to Stanley direct. The thing I do have to add, is
I don't actually know how quick they get things replaced as over the years I have never
broken a single Facom tool, and that includes bashing on a 10mm spanner with a hammer
to remove a pipe fitting that was very stuck.... The fitting came apart, the spanner barely
had a mark on it. Awesome stuff and a great tool brand to buy in the UK for sure.

basically it should be no problem (i guess) to buy /warranty Facom tools in the US since they are officially sold through Stanley: http://www.stanleysupplyservices.com/search.aspx?q=facom&go=
