Other work around the house can't take a back seat to this, so yard work still had to be done and the pool needed to be opened up. I was actually way early with it this year which worked out well as it was mid 90's here on May 21st and the pool was ready for swimming although it was only about 66 degrees! The kiddos didn't care though! I also had to do some customer entertaining at the Garth Brooks concert at Gillette Stadium, so the wife and I had an unexpected night out for the show!

With the big party creeping up it was time to go into full clean up mode everywhere. My pool deck had been neglected for about a decade......pressure washing that was super fun! I had mountains of saw dust to get rid of in the barn too.

1655946037049.png1655946068879.png

So I finished cleaning up on Friday night before Memorial Day, set up some tables and chairs and moved my guitar stuff up there so we could hang out and jam........and then it rained all day Saturday :(

Other than me being bummed out that we had to postpone all went well, most of the people could still make it on Sunday, we grilled food, drank beer and played music! It was a great time and I needed a heck of a break at that point! Progress on the barn took a break at that point up until last night other than a couple projects in the barn since then!

I stuffed the boat and cars in there and started addressing the mouse damage to the GTO and the boat trailer. I hate mice and they infested everything this year, including the boat trailer wiring!

View attachment 1683885View attachment 1683886

I also had to do some gel coat repair on the boat due to a submerged rock at a dock I was pulling into at night last year up on Winnipesaukee in NH. Once that was done and wet sanded I realized the rest of the boat needed a cut/polish/wax and buff, so thats how I've been spending the last few nights! A project as simple as that would have been almost impossible for me prior to having the space to work, so that in and of itself is awesome!

Thanks a bunch guys!

I grew up working in the driveway on various cars and projects with my Dad. We always talked about one day having a nice shop to work in so we could finally do the projects right and not be rushed through them or dealing with weather or borrowing peoples garages for the necessary repair in the middle of a snow storm in February haha. I always looked forward to the day I could finally build the shop and we'd get to do that project. Unfortunately, he passed quickly from colon cancer 10 years ago and we never got to do it. So I am building the shop we always talked about and want to make sure I get to do a project in there with my boys! They are already talking about building their first "race cars" and what colors they want to paint them and everything. It is the best part of doing all this!

Introducing the younger generation to some wrenching during my son's Barn Birthday party! We set up a bounce house in the barn since it was raining out and let them have the run of the place! My two younger ones and my nephew found the dead power wheels in the corner and decided to try and get her going again.

I also picked up some vintage equipment to get restored/set up. I was gifted this 1953 Delta Model 17 Drill press. I plan to restore it over the winter with the boys and add a vfd to it since it has a three phase motor on it. I also picked up a 1932 Southbend Model 9 Lathe. I just realized I don't have any pictures of it! It was fully restored already though. I need to build a table for it and get it set up in its new home!

And just so everyone knows, I am actually doing work in the barn haha! So far we've done brakes all the way around on the wife's Yukon, new struts up front on the Yukon, and prepped the Miata for a track day, among other miscellaneous projects!

I don't even mind not having a lift in there yet, compared to working outside on the driveway or dirt my entire life, this is pure luxury!!

And bringing us up to date is "Project:Give my wife her Basement Back!" Slowly moving all my tools out of the house and up to the barn. I am putting off moving the 80 gallon compressor that is hidden in the close though until I finally figure out where I am going to put it in the barn. Part of me thinks I should leave it where it is and just run an airline underground up to the barn so I don't have to listen to it! My wife doesn't agree considering it is right under our bedroom haha!

Trying to organize things as I put them away, but I keep finding **** I think I lost and having to rearrange everything to make stuff fit. This might take a while!!

Man, I missed a ton of your updates, must not have seen the notifications. Looks outstanding! Love all the wood work. New cabinets and tool cart look great! Looks like you will have plenty of room with that beast.........(y)

Looking forward to seeing the restoration, post a pic of your new lathe.

That lathe is a bit bigger than mine! I really should have gone bigger with the barn, I just added this to the collection too and it is filling up fast!

My father in law was going to sell it, and I didn't want to see it leave the family, so I ended up buying it from him. When my wife and I started dating I was big into drag racing and cars in general. He was a "reformed" gear head who hadn't touched cars since his mid 20's. I started dragging him back to the drag strip and car shows and he ended up buying this car off ebay without even telling his wife! I thought I was going to get kicked out of the family haha! I always told him that I'd love to have it if he ever decided to let it go, so he gave me first shot at it, and for a deal I couldn't pass up!

1969 Chevelle Malibu 350 car auto floor shift car. Came out of California in 2011. If any of you guys are horror movie people you can check out the Chevelle and a few of his other cars in the new Steven King movie Salem's Lot. I knew a guy through work that was looking for classic cars for the movie and they grabbed this, his 66 Charger, and his 65 Chrysler New Yorker to be in the film!

Hey @Juiced06GTO, I might have missed it, but where did you source your transom window from? Was it something that Circle B provided in the build package? Looking for two 9' transoms for the build we're planning...

Hey, bud, Circle B built the transom window for me. They will custom build to your specs, the only issue is they are single pane glass, so not going to be super energy efficient if that matters for what you are doing. I just realised I haven't been back here in a while!!

Wow, can't believe I've been away form here since May!! As it often does life has been busy, with the kids and sports, and a crazy work schedule! I also started getting really back into playing guitar and have been out performing at local breweries and venues around the area which has been fun!!

I did manage to finally put one project to bed yesterday though! The barn officially has heat now!! We fired it up last night around 5pm, set it to 60 and let it rip. Its a hydro shark 12kw boiler, I need to order the Tekmar thermostat with slab sensor to really finish it, but it is up and running! I went out and checked it all this morning, its 28 outside, the thermometer on the garage door opener is reading 62, the t stat is reading 60, and the system has been off for a while as it is all cool. The electric bill will be brutal for yesterday lol, but we'll see how it does now that the slab seems to be up to temp. The barn is on a separate service so I should be able to capture some real numbers at to what the electric bill does.

Don't mind the wet floor, I had a little incident where I bumped into the relief valve and dumped a little water/glycol mix all over myself and the floor :lol_hitti

Got the new thermostat all hooked up last night. It’s a Tekmar 562 w slab sensor. The system ran for a little over a half hour last night to maintain 58, slab temp at 63 outside temp was 30 and snowing last night.

Now we wait for the electric bill lol!

Looks great, you will love having heat in there! Did you put a spot for the floor sensor in when your slab was poured? I didn't think to but I guess I could drill a hole for a sensor. Right now I'm running mine just off the air temperature but it seems to keep the temperature pretty stable that way, is the thermostat you have controlling off slab temperature? It looks nice with the data it gives you.

I did run a piece of pex down into the floor prior to the pour to put the sensor, I ran it out about 8’ into the slab and fed the wire and sensor down into that.

The thermostat is supposed to learn where the slab needs to be in order to reach desired air temp. I am hoping that it will compensate for things like opening the door in the cold where the air temp may drop quickly, but the slab is still relatively warm and not fire the heater off until it has a chance to catch up.

I guess we’ll see how that works in real life use. I am pretty happy with the amount it appears to be running right now to maintain temp. 58 is more than comfortable to be out there working in a long sleeve shirt which is nice.

Eventually I’ll have a mini split in there and could use that to help if I need to bump air temp up quickly.

I don't know if I can justify in-floor heat....but this certainly helps! I'll definitely have an insulated slab, but not sure about the radiant. I'll be interested to hear what your utility bill is.

I don’t know what it will cost yet, but here is the usage so far this past week. The slab is currently sitting at 63 degrees.

If you have the opportunity, I'd say definitely run the pex in the floor. It is a relatively minimal cost, and at least it is there if you ever want to hook it up. Once the floor is in there is no going back.

How is the house build coming?

Almost ready to pull permits! Looks like we'll need to cut down a few more trees near the driveway to get everything in, as the biggest box is 54 feet long, plus the truck cab in front.... and the crane to lift the boxes... but we're getting close to moving some dirt! Once that gets going I'll start a thread.... Stay tuned!

Last night I also got the RAB flood lights mounted outside. No issues getting around the barn or entire driveway now!

Seeing this photo made me dig back through your thread as I thought those lights looked familiar. They indeed were from the Steel Lighting Co. I am currently looking at those for my build. You seemed impressed with them from your initial post almost 2 years ago. Have they still been quality and held up well for you since then?

They are holding up great! Still look as good as when I put them up, no issues to speak of! I just wish they made a nice post light so I could replace the dull looking one I have in the driveway.

So, for those wondering how much air sealing affect heat usage I have a real world example. We had a nasty storm up here last week with some crazy wind. I noticed the boiler seemed to be running more than normal for two days in a row so I went out to investigate. It turns out the wind blew the insulation right out of my coopola which was allowing all the heat in the building to escape. Below is the log for runtime. It ran 5.5 hrs on Thursday too. I fixed the air leak and it returned to normal. Seal up those buildings!!

And after another long hiatus, I am back just in time for winter! Finally checked a big one off the list this fall and stained the barn!! I used Outlast QA Log Oil to stain it. It is a wood preservative and contains an insect repellent as well. It goes on with a pump sprayer, and you basically spray it on until the wood won't absorb any more. This was a really messy job, tyvek suits and respirators were a must! I snagged a lift from work and was able to get one half of the cupola done, but the lift wouldn't reach the other side from where I could set it up. Still trying to figure out how to get up there and do that last part...

As far as the electric bill goes for the heat.....its actually a pretty funny story.

So I fired it up in November last year. Shortly thereafter National Grid stopped sending me bills. I have it set up on auto pay and didn't realize it wasn't coming out with the house bill. This went on until the beginning of last month.

All of a sudden I received 8 bills in the mail, totaling $1600+ dollars

I chalked it up to something wrong with my auto pay account and paid the 8 months worth of bills. A day later I got a call from Nat Grid apologizing for an error in their billing system that caused me to not be billed. She was calling to offer me an abatement to the bills because it was their fault. When she pulled up my account and saw they were already paid she wasn't sure what to do. She thanked me for paying them promptly and then gave me a $1000 credit on my account. WIN!!

Looking back at the bills, it appears that it is going to run about $200-240/mo to run the in floor heat with the temp set to a fairly constant 60 degrees. That is a bit much for what I want to spend to heat the space so I knocked it back to 55 this year and we'll see how that goes!

Your barn stained like that looks awesome!
Thanks brother. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I had a buddy helping me, we started at about 8am and finished around 3pm. Those pictures are right after we finished so it is still wet, it lightened up a little bit. You can really see how the water is repelled, it just beads up and drips off. They say to apply a second coat 3-5 years after the first, and then I should be good for every 8-10 after that. I ended up going through about 15 gallons to do the entire barn.
