Here are some pics of where we are now. The insulation contarctor put us off until Monday. Also have some pics of the tire equipment and 52" combination brake, shear, roll machine that will handle up to 16 ga.. Mohawk lift should be in towards the end of next week.
I have to admit this thing is over the top, it is kind of like modding a car. Once you get started the "might as wells" just take over. In the first pic you can see the sheetrock has been delivered, may not look like it but it is an entire semi load.

In the first pic you can see the AC ducting. It is pretty rough right now, plan on moving the end over the smoking lounge back and adding a round to square register. The intakes are also going to be raised about 24". May still add a drop ceiling about 18" below the current one in order to get some more insulation up there. I know, more electrical work to drop the lights as well.
Still trying to figure out what to do for the false exterior of the apartment. I know we will split it into two parts to give the old city effect. May do a fuax brick facade on one part and plaster on the other.
Anyone have any ideas?

I have a local friend who built a 80' x 365' building. What a guy could do with a shop that size?

Have you thought about a old gas station theme on the overhang area and maybe an old hotel or bank look on the rightside. Maybe something that looks like a building in your downtown area. Texas Tech pulled a close one last night.
LOL...I have been dreaming for years. Just Blessed someday has finally come.
Everyone builds for their needs, I just have a lot of stuff to put in there, not to mention the work that will have to done in there as well.
I am setting it up for one day having everything I need to to actually restore cars as a dream job. Right now my business is doing really well, just want to always have a plan "b". I am also one of those guys who very strongly believes in not using credit, if I don't have the money I don't buy it....period. I have saved and slaved for 30 years, now it's time for my to enjoy things a little.
Still have two kids to put thru college, then maybe I can have my dream job.
Seems like Tech plays their best when the other team is a double digit favorite. If they can ever get consistant...watch out!
First floor is split between the washbay/paintbooth, what will be an old fashioned soda shop, file storage room, and a conference room. I think I can pull off the two building look, for now it will be drywalled. I am hoping once we get some skin on the wall it will be easier to figure out.
I am thinking an old gas pump would look good on the corner of the carport.

That's going to look great. I drank more than one beer and sat and looked at mine for a long time before it evolved. Still looks different than what I expected. I have decided to try something new on my counter/work bench, I am drawing up plans. Thought it might help. Hope to buy the plywood next week and get the 60' of work bench going.
I know what you mean, stare at it long enough, then spend a lot of time on the internet learning and it just seems to come together. I love the way yours has turned out so far. To be honest it was yours and a multi million dollar one I saw on garagemahal that influenced mine.

Found a place to buy the booths, and the bolt down swivel stools. I figure with a 14 year old daughter, and a son that is 11, they will have a ball with their friends in there.
Well had the whole place decorated in pink for breast awarement uh, I mean breast cancer..uh you know what I mean.
Lift was delivered as well. The dry wall crew has finished hanging the board in the apartment and downstairs, actually have all but the top sheets to go in the whole shop area. I have pictures up to Friday afternoon, they came in Saturday and knocked out a big chunk of the shop.
I will try to post up some pics later showing where we are now.

The second was taken in the back of the great room, you can see rough frame of the kitchen island to the right.
Third pic is from the corner showing the stairs and conference room under the loft.
Forth pic was taken from the scaffolding at 16' showing the smoking loft ( I love cigars)
The last pic was taken from the window in the great room showing my 11 year old son burning around in the Razor...he is a chip off the 'ol block.
We got the gas lines about half done, and they should start taping tomorrow. I will post up pics when they finish the drywall and get it all taped.

Well all of the drywall is up now. The crew is now working hard on the taping, this part is going to take a while. All of the outer shop will be a smooth finish, thus lots of sanding to get it right. The apartment will have an orange peel finish and also need to be pretty smooth as well.
Contactor put my feet to the fire and said I have to get my flooring picked out and ordered this week. Hard to find the time to shop for this stuff with the plant running 24/7, I hope I can find some nice stuff in short order.

Hey, what's the problem picking the flooring? You just have to spread a couple hundred pounds of pecan shells around, run a compactor over them, and then pour a liberal amount of clear epoxy; Voila! Instant flooring, and you won't have to 'shell' out much for materials. lol

LOL...Don't worry after completion of the shop, it will be home to the four of us for the payback.......gutting and remodeling one kitchen and three bathrooms.
Lets just say contractors love me about now.
LOL...got everything but the hardwood and paint done today...wheew!
Take a look back at the picture of my son on the Razor, there is over 10 million pounds of shell in that pile. Beleive it or not the bulk of it ends up in particle board and well drilling mud.

I decided to go with a black and white checkered porcelain tile for the floor of the shop. I hope it isnt too busy looking, maybe the race deck in the lift area will tone it down enough if I break the pattern into something different. That and the exterior of the apartment ought to mellow it out enough.

So what does one do with a HUGE pile of pecan shells?
I know that they use crushed walnut shells for tumbling media and "sand"blasting media. Could you do something like that with the pecan shells?
They are actally too hard to use for media blasting, as they would scratch too much.
Most end up in either landscaping, particle board, or drilling mud.
It is kinda all of the above. I will be doing fabrication and conducting meetings in the new shop. There is also another portion of the building beyond the shop that is used for dry storage for the plant. But it will also be my dream shop for my car passion. We will stay in it for a few months, during the remodel on the house as well.

I'm speechless.... This is an outstanding build. I'm blown away by the man caves inside the shop. My wife also would say if it make you happy go ahead. But my wallet would tell me what are you freaking nuts. It can talk like that because it's empty most the time. LOL Really you have a killer build here can't wait to see how it ends up looking.

Here is an update of where we are now. Texture is up on the outside of the apartment, I included a closeup picture. I am going for a plaster look, I think the drywall guys nailed it.
I am also including a picture of the faux slate we will be adding to the bottom 3' of the wall.
I caught the crew with a light in the washbay. The walls will be tiled as will the floor. The angle along the top is for the light placement there will be a total of 9 water resistant fixtures in there to try to keep and shadows to a minimum.
With any luck they will get the walls all primed and start painting this next week.

That texture job is superb! I wonder if it's worth the extra dough to have the finish coat covered by a glaze? There are some real artists out there who specialize in faux finishes, glazes, troweled marbleized treatments, 'ragged' paint application, and other $pecial processes. But, hey, why not give that facade a really special look, even if it doesn't cost just peanuts; you do it because you (pe)can! 
You can have different 'storefronts' done in their own finish technique. This way you can explain to the wife that the cost is justified because you want her to see what finishes she'll want to use in her house remodel.
