Beautiful craftsmanship, efficient shop. LOVE the look of VG fir.
Excellent work. Always loved the satisfaction of seeing the finished product, but also hated to work with some of the clients that paid the wage!
Rest well, you have clearly earned it.
Rodney

Thanks Rodney.

It all looks beautiful!

Good to see you checking in. Thanks for the compliment, Ody.

I did a unique "remodel" job. This is one of a few homes these people own in various parts of the country. The husband has a HUGE multi-car garage and shop building (guessing about 75' x 100') with 14' ceilings, and an incredible mancave above. There's a full kitchen, bedroom with private bathroom, second bathroom, great room with pool table, bunch of huge leather seating for TV, and off to one side, the cigar smoking room . There's an 11' wide opening to the smoking room and Mrs. wanted it to be able to be closed off to contain the smoke better. Instead of re-framing things, we decided to just use doors. They really like all their knotty alder doors and trim, so I created a stationary door on each side, cut to fit the existing trim, then hung two active doors off of those. Space above became transom windows. And you can see, this guy hunts a lot.

I'm surprised I haven't read through this thread before but now that I have I'm in awe. You do some very nice work, I wish I could do that caliber of work.
Great looking shop as well! You mentioned connecting dust collection to a lathe but I don't think I saw any photos of it.

The lathe I have is an old cheapo that a friend wanted to get rid of so I took it home. Have not set it up or hooked it to the DC system yet. Thanks for the compliment.

Beautiful Work Toolfool!

Can only hope my projects turn out half as nice. What finish did you use?

Can see why much of your work is on a referral basis.

Again, beautiful work and you are truly skilled.

Ody.

Thanks Ody. The doors were to be finished in place by the homeowner, and transom glass installed after.
I'm looking forward to seeing your bathroom progress. (save the black walnut cut-offs)

A friend of mine in Marysville was clearing some of his land for a new house and asked me if I was interested in a **** cut from a cedar he dropped. I picked up this 46" wide x 12" thick round. Now to find someone who can slice this into 3" or 4" thick table tops.

So how much does that round weigh?

Cutting that into table tops sounds like it's going to be fun.

It has to weigh a few hundred pounds. Took two of us to "slowly" roll it out of my truck. Know anybody with a huge bandsaw ?? Or a giant portable sawmill ??

I wonder if you could make a jig to hold a chainsaw horizontal and level, then have the round on some sort of lazy susan type arrangement. Then you could pivot the round into the fixed blade. Slowly turn the round, and little by little make the cut.

Interesting idea. The jig or the pivot would have to be adjustable as the bar progresses through the width of the round. I'd be hesitant to try it with anything less than a welded steel fixture.

Shop project I worked on this Friday. Another contractor had a customer who wanted a dutch door between two rooms but had no room for the swing on either side. He called called me because I do mortise locks, multi-point locks and figure out hardware problems for a lot of the local contractors. We brainstormed and figured the only solution was a dutch pocket door. I researched and ordered parts , he ordered the knotty alder door blank, and here's what resulted.
I cut the door across the center of the middle rail. Mortised out a 15/16" wide x 7/8" deep channel in the top of the bottom half of the door (scary on a 1-3/8" door). This accepts a teflon-lined U-channel. The bottom half also got an edge pull and two face pulls mortised in. The top half received a double roller assembly that will ride in the U-channel, and a flush bolt to allow the doors to act as one when necessary. The upper half attaches to rollers in a channel (typical pocket door) and the bottom half has wheels and a T-track(like a patio slider). There are also guides for the both sections at the pocket opening. Now I'm hoping the contractor can install this properly so it works as planned.

Very nice! Did you cut that long slot with a router?

I set up "extensions" of the door and used my lock mortise machine. There's only about 3/16" of material left on each side, and the alder is very soft. Any discrepancy or "bite" of the router could have ruined the door.
Thanks for stopping by.

Nothing like a good hardware mortising challenge.

We do 3 point locking hardware on entry doors, and spring loaded bi-swing hardware occasionally. Seems every manufacture is just a little bit different, and you have to figure it all out for each one.

I have a pile of homemade jigs and I keep having to make new ones ! But that PC lock mortiser comes in handy.

Wish our locations were a little more compatible in terms of travel time. Have several projects that are on the verge of becoming a "pigs ear" and if we were closer, would love to have you take these projects to the "silk purse" level!

Your skill is great. Very interesting project.

Ody.

Hey man,
Just saw and replied to your post on the mantle thread. I just love seeing your work and thank you for posting pictures. You are a true craftsman (and not in the Chinese handtool sense, LOL).

I haven't had much work in quite a while, so there hasn't been much to show. I've been sitting around a lot since mid-winter and getting fat and out of shape. I decided to turn half of my garage space (which used to be my shop) into a nice exercise area that might motivate my wife and I to get into shape. The garage was originally about 24' deep, but I had taken about 10' of it for a small guest room and an office. I had framed the ceilings at 7'6" to allow for storage above (garage ceiling was 12'). I enclosed half of the storage loft to try to keep dust out while that area was shop space.
The new project started by dividing the old shop space into an area about 14' x 18' for the new room and about 14' x 14' with the existing garage door for storing the lawn tractor and all the stuff. I didn't take pictures until the drywall was finished, so that's the "before".

The after. I built some closet space and left a 5' wide space for a future aquarium (used to be big into fish in middle to high school). Put some LED cans in the ceiling, added a cool looking cheap ceiling fan, and painted two opposite walls a gunmetal gray just because. I thought about staining my concrete floor but it had big scratches, rust stains, and **** since it had been a shop for almost ten years. I had a little bit of red stain from staining my concrete patio 7 years ago, so I decided to get creative. The main color is Aqua Blue by Kemiko, finish sealer is UltraSeal (four coats). I hit CL for a treadmill and a NordicTrak elliptical , trimmed out the doors and window, and here's what I have. What do you think ?

After not having much work for several months, my buddy Steve called and asked if I'd help him on a job. We're framing a 4200 sf house !! Two 60+ year old guys framing in some of the ugliest weather (mostly 40's and raining). I'm too old for this ****. One positive is the location, on Deer Lake on Whidbey, beautiful view and tranquil setting.

Hey Toolfool...

That Deer Lake build looks like a great fort for you and Steve-o, eh? But three floors seems a little much, don't you think...???

Nice work buddy.

Toolfool, thanks for posting, great looking shop and craftsmanship. I'm just west of Sequim. would be fun to get together for burgers and beer with the local GJ crowd.

I work as a Handyman and TOTALLY understand the ebbs and flows of the business, getting ready to build out my shop for woodworking and cars (really need to figure out the dust containment issue).

Cheers, David

Just finished a big remodel. House sits on a high bluff with a killer view across Useless Bay. Homeowners purchased it for the location and wanted about 75% of it remodeled. Demo was done before I got involved (bonus), but I came in to help set posts and beams. Most of the first floor walls were removed and stairway relocated. The water-side walls were opened up to accommodate "NANA Walls" (like glass bifolds, $$$). Wood floors replaced, master bath retiled, and all new bamboo cabinetry installed. Homeowners were moving in next day from these pics.
