They require more maintenance than say your older 335i because of the head needs to be shimmed but it's DIY able. E46 M's are decent I'd like to own one but E36 M3 while has a crappy build from time to time is easily a great dual purpose car. Track events and still can be a good on street unless you install a cage. Only issue is good ones are now where ratty E46's are in price scale.
Nice thing about the Raptor is the 4 doors and it's utilitarian use. I hate how trucks in New England are so over priced.
Seriously! The resale on pickups in the area is RIDICULOUS.
I am open to an E36 M3, for sure, but I've always had a soft spot for the E46 M3. It just does something for me each time I see it where the E36 M3 doesn't have quite the same effect.
And sure, the Raptor is HUGE and makes road trips super comfortable, but I can get something much cheaper that offers the same utility and comfort. And my wife's Jeep GC, while nowhere near as spacious as the Raptor, has enough interior space for us and the boys. Plus, we can always get a roof storage rack and I already have a tow hitch cargo rack for it.
I'd definitely try to DIY the repairs on any future car, but luckily I know a guy whose father in law is a master BMW tech, so I have connections!
Thanks for the input! When can I get a ride in that E30 M3?

I PM'd you a few weeks back but never heard from you. Would like to meet up sometime near you (there are breweries in CT I'd like to check out).
You're following his approach in vehicle purchases as well

He sold his BMW to purchase a Lightening Blue Gen 2 Raptor, which he just sold to puck up an E92 M3!
Good stuff though.... the truck is looking great. Do you think you'd miss the utility the truck provides if you jump back into a car?
It's so true!! His Gen 2 was SICK but I'm glad his Gen 1 is staying in the Moreman family. And obviously I love the E90/E91/E92/E93 BMW's, so I was a huge fan of his decision to pick up an E92 M3. Honestly, I considered an E90 M3 for a hot second, but I wanted something different, having already had an E90.
But, honestly, it's just more of a coincidence. I miss driving a stick and daily driving a truck just isn't as enjoyable. And while the utility is definitely convenient, I can count on one hand the amount of times the "utility" has come in handy. Not only do I know people with trucks, but my wife will still have the Grand Cherokee for the foreseeable future, so that'll become the baby hauler. Again, this is all assuming I actually move forward with replacing the Raptor. Right now, anything could happen, but I'm definitely leaning that way. I just don't feel right without a BMW in my garage. I can't quite explain it.
Not only that, but I can easily pick up a non-Raptor pickup truck for FAR less money than this beast is costing me.
My wife had the perfect analogy for me yesterday. I was married to BMW for so long (having owned 4 myself, my mom owned 1 and my wife owned 1) and the marriage was great, but I needed to try something else and so I opted for a mistress (the Raptor). And while the mistress was great, there's nothing like going home to a happy marriage.
