Garage door sources?

So I checked HD, Lowes, and Menards: 16' is the widest garage door any of them sell, and apart from one 10' option, 9' seems to the max for singles. I was therefore planning on either three 9x8s or one 9x8 and a 16x8.

Then I tried backing my truck into my MIL's garage and discovered I only had a few inches of clearance for the door mirrors. Hopped out and measured the door opening: 9'... I'm guessing if I had towing mirrors on it, it wouldn't have fit!

That makes me think a 9' wide door is too small for the truck (especially if I add towing mirrors or ever move up to a bigger truck) and a 16' door would be a disaster for parking the truck and my wife's Jeep. I'm leaning heavily towards 20x8 and 10x8 or bigger... except the big box stores don't sell anything that big :-/

I'm sure I could custom order for a hefty premium, but since I see so many recommendations on GJ for larger sized doors I was wondering where I might source them without paying a fortune?

If you have a local garage door "sales and service" place you may find they can get what you want for a cheaper price than the big box stores can do. I learned that just recently and it surprised me. It certainly can't to check into it.

Find the local commercial lumberyard that mostly supplies contractors. Stop at some new construction and ask them who they get their materials from. Then go visit them. They should have a couple of brands available in all sorts of sizes.

I also agree with the local shops.
I was able to get a 18' by 10' insulated, jackshaft, high rise extensions and installation for a very reasonable price.
If nothing else it will get you an idea of price.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions (and sorry for the slow response). I guess I need to just figure out what I want size wise, then shop around for the best price. And probably do it the old fashioned way, with a phone, instead of a browser ;-)

Totally agree; by "best price" I mean "greatest value", not just "lowest cost".

I definitely will. It is being shipped as of now. Few more days to a week and I should hopefully have it.

Huh... that makes 16' look plenty adequate...

I need to temporarily set some 2x4s somewhere and mock up openings of various sizes to see what I really need. I'd rather end up with a door that's bigger than I need than smaller, but there's no sense going 20-30% over what I really need!

FYI, the house garage has 9x8 doors on it. My '08 had about 1.5-2" of clearance on the stock mirrors on each side. My F250, I have to fold the mirrors in before pulling into the garage....fortunately, my truck has power mirros.

Do you want a door you can squeeze in or one you can easily drive in??? The angle of that shot makes it look like the truck could not drive straight out from where it's parked?

For singles I did 10' on mine. I have many customers that like that as well and more and more are going with 20' wide. We are truck and SUV country here. Most everything is 8' or higher. Starter homes are the only ones getting 16'x7' with most parking out side after.

I contacted the local garage door specialist here on the island. He was able to order and deliver my 20' wide roll-up door. The height is 8'8" and has an electric operator. Lawrence Doors is the manufacturer. I was able to install everything myself and a Genie Lift, until I needed help with the one-piece sheet metal shroud. Very happy with my purchase. This thing is built rock-solid. Aloha! John

i fold mine in on a 10 foot door, power mirrors rock
