Re: Garage Refurb

How much dinaro is a full horseshoe going for these days

Not sure, these were left behind by the previous owner.

Sorry Marine but they can't be working, electricity is lighter than air and any that leaks out would float up. The only time I use horse shoes is when the receptacle is installed properly.

You mean Strouty has been fooling me ? :headscrat

IN a couple of recent thread in the Heating/AC section there's been discussionof chimneys for wood stoves. That got me thinking of how old my stove pipe was. I usually replaced it about every 4 years and put up a new masonary chimney a few years ago. I figured for some peace of mind, it might be time to buy some new pipe and swap it out. So I made a run to Menard's yesterday and picked up two straight sections and 2 90°.

The short section was left over from the cosmoline oven I made when I bought a Mosin and had to clean it. So this morning before I started a fire, I replaced the old and put in some new.

I think I read someplace on your thread, Eric, about replacing the wood stove since it was nearing its life or wS that someone else? I know you have had to do some reports recently.

How old is it and what is the usual lifespan?

That must be why my electric bill is so high; no horseshoe under my wrong style 240V outlet. Is the difference between styles just to define use, as ranges and dryers take a different plug? Capacity is the same

The difference, honestly, that question should be asked in the electrical Section here. Those guys are alot more versed on the subject than I am.

What it boils down to basically is the one I put in the first time,(left receptacle) my mistake, has 3 flats, which is two hots and a neutral.

The one I replaced it with, like the receptacle on the right, has two flats and a D-shaped. The flats are hot and the D-shaped is the ground.

While I am the only one using it, I know what gets plugged in there and I did use the welder with it wired like that, the issue is that it is wrong by code. The next person comes along and uses it for something different, they might have a safety issue.

I'd like to replace the stove as it's 50-60 years old and I did mention it somewhere in this thread. It has seen better days as it is just plain getting wore out. I've been looking at a DAKA unit from Menard's. To ease the cost, I have been gathering some rebate coupons and gift cards. I'm also price watching and want to see if it jumps price during a 11% sale.

But I like the old stove ;-)
What is worn out about it?

Mostly, it's just showing it's age. Where the heat exchanger bolts on, there is a cast ring on the inside of the stove. This ring has been detoriating making some of the bolts loose as they are square headed and fit down inside a matched pocket. Since they can't be tightened up completely, it does allow a small bit of ash to escape when it's cold, same with some smoke. Once it gets some heat in it, it seals up. At this point in time, it doesn't scare me about failing but I realize, it's life is coming to an end.

I burn it every day I'm off work, 2 out of three days, that's about 20 days/month. Figure I burn Nov-March, that's 5 months at 20 days = 100 times a heating season, but you also count the times that I let it go out or burn down to just a few coals and that number could be closer to 150 heat cycles a year. I know that I have used it for 15 years but I also know it was used by the previous owners, one who happened to burn coal and alot of it. I'm guessing this thing is from the 1950's. So it's 60 plus years old and once you figure out the heat cycles it's been through in it's life time, it has seen alot of usage.

60/65 years old x 100/150 heat cycles = 6000-9750 heat cycles.

This is the ring on the inside.

Where the fine ash comes out. I've caulked it with a furnace cement this year but all things must come to an end.

Your thread is the one that got me hooked on GJ. Amazing work.

As far as the connection to the heat exchanger is concerned, you might try stove gasket around the edge, and inside the thimble.

Thank you for the compliments.

As far as the stove advice, it's appreciated as well, but I have started to buy all the duct work I need in anticipation for a new DAKA wood furnace.

We went to Menard's last night and I picked up, what I believe is all I need for for the future heat source of my shop. I will be picking up a DAKA wood furnace to replace the old unit that I have been using.

Unfortunately, we arrived about 30 minutes before menard's was closing so I'm glad I had a list to read from and mark stuff off. The wife was also kind enough to give me a hand going through the list, double checking what I was grabbing.

Crappy low light picture.

In the mean time, I have some wire and coax to run. I picked up a 32" Proscan for the other side of the garage. I mounted it yesterday, with a few issues. The side I was trying to mount it to (middle/above the window) hasd a few nails in it. I broke two drill bits hitting those nails. One bit was a small one and I was using that trying to probe for the stud.

It's a swivel mount, so it allows the TV to move out or back against the wall.

I picked this mount up at Menard's earlier this week. I thought it would work great to mount the TV, as you can see, above the window and out of the way. Unfortunately, my judgement was off a bit. It made the TV sit too high and would not clear the ceiling, this was after I broke two drill bits. . . and snapped a lag screw off using the impact driver. Since the top lag had broke off, I drilled another hole and put in a larger 5/16" lag of my own. Once it was it, I removed the head of the broken lag, redrilled the hole at an angle and put in a new lag. Fortunately, this TV is light, I wondered if it was even in the box.

After the mounting fiasco, I was trying to figure out how to make the swivel mount work. I considered closing in the window to gain wall space, no too big of a project. I thought about framing a 2x8 or something and built out over the window, no, dumb idea. I considered moving it to a different spot, no, the air reel was in the way.

Then it dawned on me, simply flip the swivel over along, flip the tv mount back to right orientation. BAM, simple fix and it gave me the clearance I need. Although it does put one of the swivel bolts upside down, I don't think there will be an issue. I'll put a dab of clear silicon on it so it can't back out.

Today, I'll be runing some coax and a new outlet for the TV.

Nutts: way to stick to the GET R DONE plan and it looks like it's working. how are the speakers working? are you able to rock on when you need to get the blood pumping? also are you able to hook the TV up to those big speakers?

good luck with the new stove.

They will rock out and I turned it a couple of times for a few songs but nothing long lasting like hours. I believe I could hook up to those speakers, all 4 of them. The receiver does have an input that I can use I believe. I guess I might need to check into that.

Wipe that dust off of that cabinet. :lol_hitti

Nice TV. Is it an LED or LCD TV. Either way, you'll like it for watching those car shows on when it's crappy outside. I love my TV in the garage and always have it on when I'm out there. It makes good company.

It's Proscan LED unit. We picked it up at HH Gregg for $138 on their Presidents Day sale.

It'll keep me company that's for sure, it's actually the second TV in the garage. There are times that I sit at the work table doing stuff, drawing plans or on my lap top and I can have the TV on instead of the radio.

LOL, that cabinet does need dusted.

NUTTS: maybe some of those wires you cut too short will work for the TV?

i saw the dust on your cabinet before Kevin mentioned it but you seem to be in your shop a lot so thought that might be a daily occurrence. isn't he a smart *** now that he has his DREAM gararge? :lol_hitti

i have a little 13 inch TV/VCR that i put on a mount something like you have for your new TV in my little garage that i'm turning into a workshop that was a gym . i turn put in an old movie and just listen and look up and watch every once in a while. like Kevin said it's nice to have a TV in the shop and hope you get it rocking with those speakers.

Great thread, I keep coming back to see what your doing.
I am doing a lot of things in the garage, but I am just too lazy to document it all.
So thanks for taking the time, I know it can be a PITA sometimes.

Surprised no one has written "dust me" on that cabinet. Dust is one of my least worries, l might walk through with a leaf blower a couple times a year.
Look forward to following the new wood stove install.

Nutts, if the dust and TV posts don't stop, we'll have to get this thread moved over to FP.:lol_hitti

I'm sure you'll be happy to get that new furnace installed.

Thanks for the compliments. I have found that when I stop to take pictures, it allows me to go back and see where I have been and what I have accomplished. There have been times, I have forgot how much I have done till I looked at the pictures. I then realize how fortunate I am and glad that I stopped for a moment to snap a picture.

I don't have a picture at the moment, but that cabinet is now dusted. As far as writing "dust me", honestly, I'm surprised that the wife hadn't done that. If things go as planned, I'm going to get the wood stove here in a week or so. Once I have it on hand, I need a day or so of decent weather to get it installed or fire up the space heater.

It's all good, sometimes you have to stop, enough life and have a few laughs.

I figure once I get the new stove installed, it'll start warming up and Winter will be on it's way out.

Given the current temps in the Northeast, a decent number of GJ members want you to install that stove to ensure that winter ends quickly.

I'd come out and help you, but I got a Dr's appt on Tuesday.

The garage is looking great!

Yes, It always seems that way. It like the first winter you buy a sled, it doesn't snow. And when your boat is ready to go, it's raining and chilly on every day you have off from work.

I say get that furnace installed so we get get to better weather.

I'd love to go get that stove today but I'll be using my step-dad's 5x10 trailer. It doesn't see much use during the Winter. I'd rather not be the one that gets salt all over it.

Nutts: in case you'd end up spending a hour or so cleaning off the snow or salt off your step dad's trailer i've rented a 5 x 9 UHaul utility for $20 per day for those kind of days even when i had my own trailer. Just an FYI the 5 x 9 is not interior space because it's more like 4.5 x 8.5 but should be big enough for your new stove if you have a UHaul close by.

It should be nicer in the next day or two and I'll go get the trailer. Thursday high is 34 and mostly sunny. The roads should be dry, atleast I hope. I have to go get it this week as the sale ends on the 20th.

Submitted for Kevin's approval. Dust removed.

The TV is now hooked up to the cable after a small process. . . . typical for me.

I have two outlets on opposite sides of the wall, one was put in after the other so I used a J-box in the attic. There's not much draw, so I figured I could tie into that j-box as well instead of running a whole new strand of romex (NM) just for the TV. I killed the breaker, was up in teh attic working and checked the wires, nothing good to go or atleast I thought. Apparently when I took the wire nuts off, something wasn't making contact when I checked. So, low and behold, :shocking: I got hit with 120V. I need to double check a couple of breakers as I now know, there are two outlets close to each other but on a different circuit. I also have 2 more breakers not marked.

Once that was straightened out, I found out I bought the wrong Coax fittings, so I used an older one. As I tried to thread it onto the splitter, it wouldn't go. I thought I was cross-threading it, nope not that. Could it be a different size, nope, the other two coax cables thread onto the splitter. I take the splitter and check another one of the cheaper fittings that I have at the work table. Yep, it's good. So what the hell is going on here ??? :dunno: I climb back up into the attic and try again, still won't go on. Then I look at the threads, now I see the problem. The fitting has no threads on it and it made it past QA. This lead me to go to HD today and buy a Datashark cable tool set.

I also made a small addition to the pegboard today. I grabbed a magnetic strip at HF this morning. I've never had a good way to hang or keep some impact driver bits. I was going to make a tray to toss them in but I thought about using one of the strips. It works great.
