Re: garage refurb

wow i love that workbench!!!! i want to build one soon and your's has given me some good ideas. if you don't mind what is a rough estimate on the materials for the bench?

There was 5 sheets of 3/4" plywood for the top.

Five 4x4x8' posts, all cut in half.

About 5 or 6 2x6x8', one 10 or 12' long

Probably another 5 or 6 2x4x8"

A bunch of 1/4" and 5/16" lags, depending where they went, bought in bulk at TSC.

Re: garage refurb

I just spent two hours reading this after seeing your hardware bins in a different thread that led me to this thread! Amazing build, keep up the good work!

And any woman that will let you buy a house in the shape yours was in and can picture it done is a keeper.

She wanted a wrap around porch, which this house had a small crappy porch. I tried to get her to see the potential of this house. She couldn't quite see it, so I literally drew her a picture of what the house would look like with the porch she wanted. The front steps were her idea and a damn good one.

I have to agree, she is a keeper.

Re: garage refurb

Just make sure the tanks are gone.

Oh ya ! My dad owned gas stations when I was a kid.. I grew up in a three bay Colonial Shell station, spent my early teen years in a 1940's Shell station and late teens in a two bay Getty station. The 1940's station taught us all about leaky tanks...

Re: garage refurb

I mounted my vise yesterday. While I uploaded the pics, I realized that i don't have pics of the doors that cover the bin storage. I will get a couple pics today.

I started with this pile.
02122011009.jpg

Since the top is a double layer of 3/4 plywood, I decided to use some metal under the vise. I was afraid that some serious torquing might cause the vise to sink in the plywood. My plan was to sandwich the plywood with some 10 gauge steel and bolt it with some grade 5 fasteners.

I wanted to spread the load across the underside. I laid a few 2x4s under the plywood, followed by a piece of 3/4" plywood. The steel would be top and bottom. This is what I had before the steel.

Re: garage refurb

oops, posted that before I was done.
02122011012.jpg

I laid everything out, marking and measuring stuff. I drilled holes and transferred them to the second sheet. But when I laid it out, I forgot about top sheet being and the edge. The second (bottom sheet) is recessed back. My bolts weren't long enough, even though I added the thicknesses of everything up twice.

I went back to TSC, to buy some 6" bolts, all they had in grade 5 was 1/2" and I was using 7/16". So I made a decision to upgrade to the larger instead of driving all over looking for 6" 7/16 bolts. This lead to drilling out the mounting holes in the vise, opening up the holes in the steel to allow a little "slide and fit".
I had to trim the bottom sheet to fit, which it still didn't line up real nice. So I decided to forgo the bottom sheet, to save more headache (which I did have at the time). I was probably overkilling the situation and the vise would break before all that lumber would pull through. So I stopped at good enough and called it a day.

02122011013.jpg

It looks like it might sit back a little far, but the vise closes all the way without the handle hitting. I'll find it out once I put it to work.

Re: garage refurb

subscribing for 2 reasons- cool space and fox mustang!

I would have started a mustang thread but it's in the house garage. I'd like to move it back to my garage but theres about 9" ice/snow. I don't want to even try to attempt it. So for now, it stays there and my truck sits out.

Re: garage refurb

Usual practice is to line up the rear jaw with the edge of the bench, so that long pieces can hang past the bench edge.

Looks beefy though!

I'd rather have it out farther, but the way I built the bench, it's not going to happen. If I were to move it out, I'd have to lag it the 2x6s that make up the front of the bench.

everything is subject to change

Re: garage refurb

I took a picture of the cabinet doors for the bin storage. It turned out alright and it's just like the other cabinet doors i have built.

Re: garage refurb

I forgot to mention, in the above picture, the cork bulletin board. I mounted a small bulletin board(previously mounted on the wall between the cabintes) on one of the cabinet doors. The cabinets doors are basically wasted wall space,so why not put them to use.

I had done this at the fire station and it worked quite well. I added a bulletin board above the TV in the kitchen. It makes it quite easy to pass information on between the shifts. Everybody knows right where to spot something new.

Re: garage refurb

I did a little bit of work over the last few days, not much but it is some simple progress. I added a few bench outlets, which I have been dreading. It's not that it was hard but it meant crawling back and forth in the attics in the garage. This includes above the ceiling I just dropped, luckily I'm not a person in need of a diet.
While I was at it, I changed access to the back attic, replaced a swing down door with a scuttlehole like the rest. Unfortunately, it came out looking like ****. It will work for now till I replace the ceiling in the rear of the garage.
02242011001.jpg

The initial plans called for 2 outlets, but I added a third to plug in the drill press. I used Romex but ran it in conduit to hide it. It also entailed bending one piece to fit the holes.

As you can see in this picture, I put the outlet on the end of the bench to keep it out of the way. I painted the boxes black to match the bench, along with black outlets. I still need to add a little chaulk around the conduit and paint it black, the bolt heads too.
02242011002.jpg

Last but not least, the outlet on the other end of the bench.
02242011003.jpg

The refurb is almost coming to a close until warmer weather gets here. If the money holds out, I'll start with working on the outside of the garage.

Very nice JOB(S)!
I some how just now caught onto this forum of yours for the first time. I just read all 6 pages of it at once, with a lunch break in between and some other things. Great jobs all around! I am getting a lot of ideas for things to do and how to do them for my garage while admiring yours!

Thanks. The garage was foramlly broke in. I parted out a '94 Lightning for a buddy of mine. I had to get it done for the Ford swapmeet next weekend. I made a helluva mess on the floor.

This is what it looked like upon arrival.

I made two trips to the scrap yard today to get rid of 1660 lbs of steel.

Re: garage refurb

I lined up a deal with the previous owner. He had let his son drive it, doing construction. He got a DUI one night, after an acccident. I was on duty that night, responded to the accident and knew about it. The owner used to be the Service/safety director for our small town. I talked to him the next day at city hall, asked what was happening to the truck and not to sell it or let the insurance company get it with out talking to me. A few days later, he called me, I didn't have the cash but my buddy did and he bought it "right".
The insurance company totalled it out so it had a salvage title. It was a rusty pig underneath. It didn't have the proper "Lightning" life and was driven like just another vehicle.

Nice work! The OSB looks good with the black paint! It would have good durability too. No worries about scratches - just touch it up!

Re: garage refurb

I like it, a lot. Good looking space, but more importantly well thought out and solidly constructed. Years from now somebody will still be using that building and thinking “Man, I won the lottery, the old timer that built this thing really did a fine job.”

Unless they are trying to tear something out for some reason, in which case they might cuss you just a little. :)

Re: garage refurb

One of the things I have been putting off is the "back splash" for the work bench top. I found a local place to get my diamond plate and had them shear it too.

before....a little blurry,sorry.
