Re: garage refurb

This crappy raining weather is about to drive me nuts. I'd like to get a few things done but this *****. I did get the J-channel put up around the garage doors. I'm still waiting for the weather to break for a few days so I can wrap the windows and man door. I want to paint the man door before wrapping the trim around it. The cool and misty day isn't helping.

I did pour a step in front of the man door. I drilled and put in a few pieces of rebar to help tie it together. As I was shoveling in the home brewed concrete, I noticed the form had shifted. At that point, i didn't even try to straighten it out, I figured it would make the situation worse.

10012011garagesteps001.jpg

As you can see there's tar paper behind the step. To be honest, the concrete comes up over the wood siding of garage. I wasn't sure how to do it, so I just nailed up some tar paper up to try to separate it. Right or wrong, I'm not sure but it's done and I don't plan on breaking it out to do something different.

I really didn't want vinyl siding under the door. I have had a habit of kicking the snow off my boots before I go in during the winter. So I thought a kick plate would work and being a garage, aluminum diamond plate would work.

That would be my $5 kick plate.

I am new round these parts (my second post) and last thing i want to do is offend - you have one an amazing job - but please, please consider ditching the pvc airline - this stuff is very dangerous - my cousin was working at a bench that had pvc tubing at eye level, he had just turned around to walk away from the bench and it exploded with pvc shrapnel flying everywhere - some lodged in the back of his head and some in his back and arms - needless to say not a good day and he was just thankful he was facing the other direction - I ran 3/4" copper in my shop (sweated 34 fittings with not one leak) and i think it cost me around 70 bucks. Anyway, not trying to rain on your parade - you have done a beautiful job, i just cringe everytime i see pvc used for compressed air.

Ummm, lets not get the PVC vs Copper vs Iron Pipe argument started. Let's just say that there are some people here that are VERY opposed to PVC and leave it at that. They will like your story.

Thanks for the comments guys.

As much as I hate wrapping the trim, I'm almost anxious to get it over and done with.

Badnova, no biggie man, the PVC airline is ongoing debate here, just the same as the OSB/drywall/plywood/metal siding for wall coverings. Stick around long enough and you'll many discussions on the subject.

Really good work, so far! I love the kickplate. I agree with you on the siding under the door, it does not hold up well as that is the best place to kick off your shoes. Much like you, I'm sure, I can't wait to see it finished!

Re: garage refurb

Well, I have made a little progress since the weather broke. This also including mowing the yard the day before, it's surprising how fast the grass still grows even as it cools off.

Since it was warming back up, I thought I better add to the sidewalk before winter. I borrowed the mixer from my neighbor as it was too much to mix in the wheelbarrow. I thought about making it wider but I dodn't want somebody turning around in my drive and driving up over the sidewalk.

Under the stone, was some old black top that I had to pull up. It made it easier to pull up rather then try to dig up compacted gravel. Once again, I also dig deeper around the foundation and tied it together with some rebar.

10062011sidewalk002.jpg

I didn't get a finished picture yet as it was about 6:30 when I finished and I had to be at work at 7. I will get a picture of it today. You can also see in one picture, part of the door frame. I wrapped that and one window frame the day before. I'll get pictures of that today too. Since it's weather permitting, I'll either finish wrapping the other windows or start sanding the man door.

You gonna be able to take advantage of this weekend's great weather? Got Monday off, too?

I am building a back porch and should wrap it up this weekend.

I'm trying to take advantage of the nice weather, that's the main reason I side tracked working on the garage itself and finished up the sidewalk.

I do have Monday off and I plan on working on the garage.

Re: garage refurb

Since the weather cooled off last night, I wanted to cover the concrete before I went to work last night. Unfortunately, it seemed to take forever to it to set up and I couldn't. I popped the forms off this morning and the concrete was still green enough that I could put my thumb nail in it, so I tried to stay off of it.

I thought it woould be appropriate to "45" the concrete like the front of the garage is. After I get some stone down, it'll look a bit better.

Here's a picture of the door and one of the windows wrapped. It's not really that hard but just tedious and even the slightest mistake shows big time.
10062011frontpics001.jpg

Moving back a few feet, you see it coming together around the door.

Wow, I'm very impressed with your work. Your attention to detail is excellent.

Many of us who are 'rehabbing' our garage get away with only having to be concerned about the inside, whereas builds like this take considerably more effort as you have to concentrate not only on the inside, but the outside as well.

The upside to all that is that I can really see this garage being one of the prime stand-out garages here on GJ. It is unique and I can't think of another garage like it. It is coming along great. Keep posting those pictures!

Re: garage refurb

oops, I might add. . .

In the second picture, you can see the west window is wrapped too, I'll finish the front window tomorrow. I would have done the front window but I felt I needed to stay off the concrete for a bit longer.

The door will be next, it'll be getting sanded down and a coat of dark hunter green. One thing you might notice is the threshold under the door, same color as the door. I think I can get another piece aluminum diamond plate and bend it to wrap around it. . . . maybe. The stuff I used for the kick plate is thin enough that I could bend it so I'm hoping I can make it work.

Although it doesn't look like much today there was a few things unseen. All the black top that I ripped up, I hauled over to a farmers field entrance, with his permission of course. I also hauled over about a 1/4 ton of sand too. I took the concrete mixer back to my neighbor and best of all. . . . brownie points please, took the wife to lunch. :pimpflash

Thank you very much. When I came back home this evening from town, A State trooper had somebody pulled over in the driveway. As I was getting out of my truck with a yard sign, he said the place looked nice and to let him know when I wanted to sell it.

My original plane was to side between the windows. Now that I have them wrapped, I'm not sure once I put the J-channel up. One thing that has crossed my mind is to use some soffit run vertically.

I guess it's going to be something decided after the J-channel is up and try looking at the options actually put up. :dunno::dunno:

Thank you, I've constanly tried to move/adjust things to find what works the best out there.

Since it's detached it works both ways, I'm out of the wifes hair and I'mout of the wife's hair.. . . . Honestly, it gives us both our space and keeps a happy marriage. She knows that she can come out anytime she wants unless I'm painting or the like.

Re: garage refurb

Like a typical day for me, It doen't seem like much proigress but I'm happy that I got the door sanded. I painted it with Latex and needed to get it all off before I hit it with an oil-based paint. I would have painted it tonight but I know Rustoleum will take forever to dry. Tomorrow's plan, take the door back off and spray it, mow the yard/leaves, nail up some J-channel and hopefuly the door will be dry enough to mount back on in the afternoon.

I had this much done already. The worst was around the window and doing the panels.
10092011door001.jpg

Primer on.

10092011door004.jpg

Too bad I couldn't just spray it tonight and leave the door off, yeah the low lifes would love that.

I'm jealous. I had to work yesterday. Today I had start building a new 5 x 6 back porch with stairs that I will finish on the holiday tomorrow. It's PERFECT weather and I didn't get any shop time.

Like i said, I'm jealous. Keep up the good work. It looks like you'll have tha place sealed for winter.

Well, one step is done, actually a fairly big hurdle considering it took two days to get it sanded down. Then another day, today, to paint and let it dry. The door now matches the back door and garage door on the house.

Re: garage refurb

I was having a dilema as what to do between the windows. I thought of using some vertically run soffit.

10102011003.jpg

10102011005.jpg

I split the ridge on both of those above. The next thought was possibly bending up some coil stock, like what's used to wrap the windows. This is just a quickly bent piece.

10102011004.jpg

Or add another two pieces of j-channel and use regular siding. They'll be some small pieces of siding. no pics.

While I was in the shower,( I do some of my best thinking in the shower :dunno: ) I realized the latter is probably what I'll do as I need to use some j-channel below the windows on the walls for the transition between the sides.

Great thread. Been reading it for the last hour+. Thanks for sharing it!

going back a year or so, what do you have between the sheets of OSB in your ceiling here? caulk? felt?

I finished up the OSB on the ceiling on Friday. I had one sheet that wanted to kick my ****. Luckily, I won out and nailed it. lol.

Here's the other side finished.

Just plain old painters chaulk. I hung the OSB by myself and it wasn't always possible for me to get the joints perfect.

Thanks.

I'm prob gonna OSB my walls/roof when I do my garage.

I really like the idea of OSB better than drywall because it's easier to mount stuff on it. (yet I know Drywall looks better to some).

but wasn't sure the best way to cover the joints. Thought about 1/4" by 1" strips, but that takes away that flat surface. I like how the chaulking worked in your case.

Re: garage refurb

Started with this yesterday morning.

09252011garagefront009.jpg

I had to remove the upper wood siding to remove the built up area.

10112011soffit003.jpg

Then I shimmed it back out with some OSB, what was underneath stuck out to far.
10112011soffit004.jpg

Once the OSB was up, I recut the older wood siding and nailed it back on to make the wall completely flush.

Then I added some rafter tails to create an actual overhang for the soffit.
10112011soffit006.jpg

Closed the front of the rafter tails with a 2x6 for the front fascia.
10112011soffit007.jpg

What I ended up with for the day.
10112011soffit008.jpg

now once the rain stops again, I can put some soffit up and continue making progress.

Re: garage refurb

Thanks guys. This weather is killing me for the last week and a half. We had like two days just windy as heck, I wasn't even going to try to put up j-channel or corners. I would have a gargae full of leaves too. Then it keeps raining leaving I think two nice days, which I worked.

Finally yesterday I started to make some progress after the rain quit and it dried up a little. The siding going on around the doors, yesterdays progress.
10242011frontsiding001.jpg

Todays progress.
Most of the lower front is done, atleast the multiple cutting stuff.
10242011frontsiding006.jpg

Another angle.
10242011frontsiding005.jpg

I still have to cut some little stuff that will go around the front window and some "custom wrapping" which is going to try my patience.

I'm not sure if you can tell in the pictures but I added some more diamond plate. I had the area below the door done as a kick plate. I bought another piece and wrapped the threshold too, sorry no good pics of it.

Re: garage refurb

I wanted to get the other front wall done but I ran into a problem. I need to get the corner piece on first. I was going to leave the T111 on it and side over it but the bottom of it was soft and starting to rot.
10242011frontsiding003.jpg

So off it came, I'm glad I pulled it off as I see some insects have ate some of the styrofoam for lunch. The firring strips also had about half their anchors pulled out or useless.
10242011frontsiding004.jpg

Now I come to a decision. Should I get enough material and finish the entire wall ? Or do I just do the first section that was already done ? If I do the entire wall, it will have to include the back corner addition. I really don't have the extra cash for that right now as things have financially got bad for my workplace. Not too mention Christmas coming, the winter heating season and another subject which I will not even go into. It just seems that sometimes that when life throws a curve ball at you, it shits on you at the same time.

Well I will toss in my dos pesos worth . Looks like that entire wall is block . Why not just leave that piece off entirely and just wrap the corner with some aluminum trim ? . Paint the wall one color and be done with it .

Rick, I think there's a picture somewhere in this thread, lol, that shows the back corner. it's going to get framed in to form an outside shed. Once that is done, a new roof will go on over that. All of that will be sided to match the house.

I'd like to have it all sided, same color as the house. This will also give me a small amount more of insulation to keep the cold off the block walls and the garage warmer. Not that I really need it warmer, but to help hold the heat in when I'm not at home.
