Re: garage refurb

Looking good NUTTs....I hadn't stopped by in while. I think you'll like that cord reel on the ceiling. Out of the way, but always close by when needed. Looking forward to seeing your air line project complete...keep it up!

Re: garage refurb

I decided to move a sign out in the garage, possibly adding an entertainment value.

I took a picture the other day but never posted it, I gave the airlines a coat of orange paint. I posted a thread previously about airline color and got some ideas. One of the factories I used to work inhad the lines painted orange so I decided on orange.

As you can tell, the floor went from primer gray to a shade of orange.

Re: garage refurb

This morning, my first order of business was to mount the pipe clamp I bought at a swap meet to a piece of 2x6. Mounting it allowed me to clamp it to the worktable.

As I was working, I snapped this picture of the mess that I am creating.

Re: garage refurb

Some of the PVC airline I removed today. . . . . no going back.

01142013airline006.jpg

A start on the new airline. I'm running it in a slightly different area, so I had to plan some changes.

01142013airline005.jpg

The tee is where the compressor will be plumbed in. There will be more going under that tee. There will be a drop going out to the garage shed and a drain. I'm also going to plumb the tank drain to go out in to the garage shed, so the mess will lbe out there and not inside.

Re: garage refurb

Looking good Eric.

A tip I picked up recently from someone with hard piped lines with a leak is to put a ball valve right at the compressor so you can shut off the system for service (or just because it leaks a little and don't feel like tracking it down).

That's the way I had it before and I will be doing it the same way. I like being able to pressurize the system when I want.

Re: garage refurb

Looking forward to the air line installation and diggin the orange paint. I've never been successful in getting a 100% leak free black pipe system. I always seem to get virtually undetectable leaks that only make themselves known when the air compressor kicks on. How are you sealing your joints?

Although, I never had a serious problem with my airlines, I did have some issues with occasionally leaks at the joints. When I did them, I wasn't aware, honestly, I was ignorant about them but I realized their time was coming to an end. I don't think anybody can deny the ease of installation or modification to them though.

Re: garage refurb

Nutts, you've given me the motivation to rip out my old CPVC lines and replumb with
black iron. Getting started is sometimes the hardest part. Pipe vise is definately a great
find and will help with the cutting and threading.

Re: garage refurb

Here it is. . . . all of it. Gone.

01162013pvc001.jpg

I made a trip to pick up a few things this morning, put together a few pieces while crawling through the attic. Then I went ahead and pulled it all out.

If you were closer, I'd tell you to come borrow my pipe vise after I'm done. You're right, getting started is sometimes the hardest part.

Not a problem.

Funny thing you mention hoses. Of all the days for my daughter to need air in one of her tires, I had to drag out the 50' hose from the compressor to her car in the driveway, along with a 25' section.

Re: garage refurb

I've been working little by little, learning as I go, as I am no plumber either. It's been a few trips up and down the ladder running airline through the attic. Once that section was down, it was back up and down making stand offs for the line as I have it running down hill for drainage (of any moisture).

01182013airline002.jpg

This is where the airline will be plumbed from the compressor, I know, some what obivious. The bottom valve will be a drain shut off and the other valve will allow me to pressurize the system when I use it.

You might also notice the second tee. This is going to running out to the garage shed. It will allow me to use compressed air outside the garage with out having one of the front door or windows open. This basically how I used my framing and roof nailer outside.

01182013airline001.jpg

This is the only drop I put on the "wood" side of the garage. It worked fine before with this arrangement so I felt there was no real reason to change drop placement while replumbing.

Re: garage refurb

Still plumbing away here, little by little. I bought most of what I needed but I knew there would be a few things here and there that I need. Today I realized that I need a 2 1/2" ****** for the blast cabinet drop, until I get that (tommorrow) I can't go any further. It always seems the little **** is what holds me up.

Here's where the airline comes across the ceiling and through the wall to the other side of the garage. Once I have it all done and no leaks, I'll go back and caulk/paint stuff.
01222013airlinepics001.jpg

Coming out the other side of the wall, it drops to a tee, one side down to a drop and the left to the perimeter of the garage. The 90° will come apart and thats where the needed ****** will go. There will be a drop with a dryer and regulator for hook up to the blast cabinet.

For the older guys with the poor eyesight, here's a close up. . . . .

Yes, I sleep when I'm not out there or on GJ. ;)

I've tried to make it a place that is great to work on stuff, BS with friends or just relax. It's been a work in progress since we bought the house 12 years ago.

Re: garage refurb

Eric - Nice job ! I ripped out the pvc and replaced with black iron. I wish now I would have painted everything before install like you did. The fittings are rusting and I need to paint . The only thing that I do not like is when I drain the lines rusty water was coming out - I extended the line to get closer to the floor and use a bucket to catch it.

Thanks and welcome to GJ.

Good luck on the goal of being a Columbus FF. If you're not a paramedic yet, I'd suggest you get that certification to improve your odds of being hired.

I read your entire thread (quite a feat for me, I usually dont have the time or patience for it!) and came away fully impressed by not only your skill with your hands, but also your skill with your mind in your designs. You remind me of my father when I was young on the farm. He was able to do anything and everything. You seem to have the same capabilities. Cant wait to see what you have going on next... Keep up the great work!

Sorry to hear older than the max age limits. Even though, getting a volunteer dept is a great goal to have.In that case, I'd suggest starting with a basic EMT certification. If that works out fine, maybe move up to a paramedic, which willtake some time for school. Gaining a EMT-B or EMT-P, possibly affords you the chance to work a side job on a private ambulance service. Good luck on your goal.
